This song explores the relationship between one person and the world. Ed Sheeran says in the song “love can change the world in a moment”. The song highlights that love and genuine relationships between people is what is most important and suggests that spreading kindness can change how the entire world acts towards each other.

This song can relate to students because most students would know who Ed Sheeran is and could even be familiar with the song itself. Often students are more invested in songs than in traditional literature/ texts. Using a song to share in class encourages the students more invested in what is being talked about in the song and analyzing the lyrics.

This song is a great model for Spandel’s trait, Voice. This song is all about what the writer thinks about the way the world is and how he wants to change that. The writer of this song is using his voice almost like a call to action as well as a reflection on how people have shaped the world in the past versus how they can shape it in the future. Using this song as a model for voice students are able to see the power and inner thoughts, feelings, and dreams of the writer.

A strategy to use with this song would be the “What are your Dreams?” strategy from Gallhager. Students will be able to take the song as inspiration to write about their own inner thoughts and dreams. They will explore how this dream would be able to come true, and maybe what obstacles they may face; their dream could be sociocentric or egocentric.
