Falling for a friend is a bad idea.Falling for your best friend, well, that’s the worst idea in the world. My best friend Cole Reed is that guy at our high school. Popular. Smart. Completely unattainable and clueless to these dangerous feelings I’ve been harboring for him. He’s also making it dang near impossible to ignore him these days. When our senior ski trip arrives, I think it’s the perfect opportunity to branch out. Too bad I end up couch-bound with a sprained ankle. What could have spelled disaster turns into a happy ending when I meet a handsome stranger from another school. But now all of a sudden Cole seems annoyed with my every move. Even worse, his jock friend, Ian is on my case more than usual. This whole dating thing has heart hazard written all over it. This is a clean-ish standalone novel. Expect some swearing and teenage stupid decisions.

I love these kind of high school stories (even if there's nothing new with this type of plot, I can still usually have fun with it) but this was super boring and the characters were bland. DNF about halfway in.

A cute, short read. The characters were likable and the romance was cute, if a little too cheesy there at the end.

Sammy has two problems at the start of this novel: she's in love with best friend (who has no clue) and she's committed to going on a ski trip even though she doesn't like skiing. The fact that she doesn't like skiing was hard for me seeing as my family loves it to the point we're building a house at a ski area. I was also saddened by the fact that the author has obviously either never skied or did it so long ago that she doesn't remember details and thus doesn't realize things like if you're hurting your ankles you have a very serious problem with your boots and it's really hard to fall on your tailbone skiing without having a serious knee injury. (You fall on your side. Falling either backward or forward is hampered by the skis being on your feet. And your ankles are held in place because the boots are tight and hard. First day complaints are much more likely to be about being cold from the snow, being hot from overdressing, hurting your wrist because you don't fall properly, hitting your hip too often, or causing all your leg muscles to hurt because you keep tensing up. Sore ankles and a bruised tailbone sound more like first day ice skating problems to me.) And Sammy's resistance to going to her prepaid lessons had me wanting to throttle her. (PSA: Your first several days skiing should involve a professional instructor. In the States, look for someone who is PSIA certified. Also, when your parents already spent money on lessons, it's pretty bratty not to take them just because you don't feel like it.)

So... Yeah. Sammy came across as a bit of a brat at first glance. Does she think her parents have infinite money that they can throw around on buying her ski passes, lessons, and equipment rental? Even before she got hurt, she clearly didn't intend to ski. Even if she wanted to go on the trip to hang with her friends when they got off the slopes, she could have saved a LOT of money by refusing to buy any of the other stuff she wasn't going to use. (Yegads, I feel old saying all that! But seriously, kid.)

Other than the selfish wasting of money, which is pretty easy to explain by "She's a teenager" I liked Sammy alright. She's the bookish shy-type who undervalues herself and makes me think of teen-me. She'd rather read a book than party and would have bailed when the friend who she trusted to help her on the trip got banned from it if she wasn't such a sucker for Cole's pleading.

I liked Cole more than Sammy herself. He was a good guy who got along with almost everyone, almost to the point that it was a flaw. He tried to get Sammy out of her comfort zone when she needed it and let her hermit-up when she didn't. And I guess he reminded me a bit of my husband with his enthusiasm for skiing and easy distraction at parties, where he would beg Sammy to go but then wind up fluttering around talking to other people and ignoring her. (My husband does that all the time. It has nothing to do with his feelings for me and everything to do with his puppy-like enthusiasm for being around people.)

Potential Love Interest Hudson rubbed me wrong from the get-go, but that could have been because it was so obvious Sammy was going to end up with Cole. Conversely, the guy who was supposed to be an obnoxious jerk struck me as decent and having good intentions overall, but that could have been because I liked Cole from the start and figured he wouldn't hang with someone who actually was an asshole.

The plot had few, if any, real surprises for me, but I don't mind a certain amount of predictability. This is one of those books that isn't about where things are going but how they're going to get there, and as such was a fun and comfortable read that I honestly enjoyed. I recommend it for YA romance readers looking for something cozy and cute.

This was a cute, quick story. It was predictable but still enjoyable. I really liked Cole, he was sweet and it was easy to love his character. While I did like the overall story I had to dock a star for mainly 2 reasons.

(1) Sammy, while being a teenager and obviously prone to hormonal outbursts, was a bit bratty and annoying. The fact that she chose to trust a complete stranger instead of her best friend just grated on my nerves🙄.

(2) The ending took a nosedive into a cheese-fest 🧀 If not for that final chapter this would have been a 4 star read.

Aside from that, it was a light and funny romance. P.S. I was so happy Ian didn’t turn out to be a huge jerk.

A little ridiculous

I know. I hate leaving a semi-bad review, but this book had several errors. My favorite "putting the dishes in the skink". That one actually made me laugh since a skink is a lizard. I was also surprised by the ending. Without giving things away, I just felt like this couple was 18 or 19, so the big ending did not work for me. This is a fairly clean read.

Content: Clean
Language: Very mild. Most people would not consider "hell" bad language. I would say this is clean for most readers.
Religious: No

Happy reading!

Your typical high school, friends to lovers romance. I didn’t really resonate with this one because even thought the hero is in love with her , he forgets that he made plans with her/would rather hang out with his friends than her. I feel like she likes him way more than he likes her :/

Super cute, quick, fun read, something I was in the mood for. Was surprised by how quick it was. Rarely do I finish a book in one sitting, but I finished this in the span of one morning.

I am all for that mutual pining/hero secretly in love with heroine trope, so this was right up my alley. And this has little to do with the story, but I have this weird thing with YA--sometimes I have a really hard time picturing the characters when I know they're in high school. It's weird because in movies, with the obvious visual aid, I have no problem. But when reading, I tend to picture what people looked like when I was in high school, which relatively wasn't that long ago, so when I think high schoolers, I think awkward smol beans. But then I remember that duh, there were plenty of developed, good-looking guys at that age. So when the guys in these books are described as muscular 18-yr-olds there's always a part of me that's a bit surprised (and grateful that I can picture some great eye candy 👀). /tangent

Loved seeing the jealousy from Cole. But for once, I wish we could see "the other guy" in these stories actually be a decent guy instead of secretly-but-quite-obviously a baddie. Just make him a guy who's actual competition for the hero and not someone who's out to humiliate the heroine, for goodness' sake!! It just makes it look like she's not capable of genuinely attracting other guys, almost rendering Cole's jealousy pointless. I would've liked to see her actually be "torn" between two people. I put "torn" in quotation marks because Sammy wouldn't actually be torn; she'd know in her gut that who she wants is Cole. Also, I SO wish she'd really told those guys off when she found out what was going on. God, was I wishing for it. People who do that kind of shit need to be shut down and shut down hard.

The skiing part was actually funny because I've tried snowboarding once before with just the same amount of skill. This genuinely made me laugh:

"I try three more times to get up, all unsuccessful. Days pass. Seasons change. Fifty people ski by me, making it look so easy. At this point, Cole is probably on the ground. Or at home. Or married with three kids."

There were multiple typos which at times took me out of the story a bit. I also think it could've been longer to really flesh out the story and develop their relationship even further. I wouldn't have minded more angst before they actually got together. But overall, I really enjoyed it.

The epilogue, though--it was nice and not completely out of the realm of possibility, I guess, but come on. They're teenagers.

So, this book was okay for a TEEN romance novel. Now, keep in mind if your considering reading this you will get more enjoyment in my opinion if your a teen or close to. It’s a good clean teen romance novel with a happy ending. If you like a good best friend to lovers romance and are a teen you might like it.

Now, with that in mind. I also think the book could have used a few improvements.

1) dual perspective. Writing from both Sam and Cole’s point of view. It could switch every chapter or every few chapters. There was a few times I felt left out in the story by not having his view point.
2) I think this book was a little rushed. I would have liked to see more happen, more unrequited love, jealousy, and overall connection between Sam and Cole. I think this book could have benefited from more length.
3) I felt like the storyline could have been a bit different and the book would have flowed better. I also think maybe it would have been more interesting to see them get together back at school instead of on a trip. I would have liked to see a feisty best friend dynamic and see more conflict there.
4) I also wouldn’t have minded seeing more of Hudson and I would have liked him to have stayed a good guy and them build a real connection and then she has a choice to make.

I just think the book could have been better. But for a teen romance novel it was relatively good. So I would give this a 3.4

Feeling overshadowed by her two best friends Eva (outgoing, star of the play kind of girl) and Cole (popular, Mr. Congeniality to every clique in school), Sammy is tired of being the quiet brainiac and dateless loser. And, she most definitely can’t squash the ever-growing crush she has on Cole (who probably doesn’t even think of her that way). When Eva is banned from the senior class ski trip, Sammy is ready to bail, if it weren’t for Cole’s convincing. After a snowball fight incident, she twists her ankle and spends the day in the lodge while everyone is on the mountain, and she happens to meet a cute guy from another school. Ah finally, someone who’s interested in her. But, Sammy can’t shake her feelings for Cole anyway, and Cole has been acting really out of character since...

Who cares that it’s summer? I enjoyed reading One of the Guys, so I wanted to pick up another A.R. Perry to plow through. A short and adorable YA romance to add to your holiday TBR, folks (if you’re into that sort of thing)! This was sweet—I’m talking half a bag of mini marshmallows in a mug of hot cocoa sweet. If you’re looking for a read-in-one-sitting friends-to-lovers YA full of awwws that makes you want to scream “just be together already,” this cute 170-page story just might be your match.

*sigh*. Well, it’s a 3 star for sure. It was a quick and light read, but nothing special. At first it was fun, but maybe half way through I was just reading to see what would happen. I felt like the main character was so mean to someone who was supposed to be her love interest, and then changed to saying only good things about him out of nowhere. Overall, she didn’t feel consistent as a character at all. Also felt too obvious that the love interest had feelings for the main character too, which turned pretty boring when the main character kept missing obvious signs. There were several characters who just were really underdeveloped. Honestly, none of the characters were great. The only character I really liked was Cole. Overall, this wasn’t a bad book, but not remarkable in any way. It was fine for a short read, just expected more ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really enjoyed this book. I'd give it 4 to 4.5 stars. I didn't appreciate the use of alcohol or the reference to sleeping with each other but compared to some of A R Perry's other books it was SO refreshing. It used the Lord's name in vain once and I did not appreciate that but overall the book was super cute. I liked that it was all from Sammy's perspective and yet you had a clue what Cole was thinking. I thought they were really cute together and I loved the friendship/family dynamic. The relationships in this book were really cute and, although the ending wasn't perfect, I thought she did a good job wrapping up the book. So many contemporary romances fail on that level. I would recommend this as a light read (I read it in just a couple of hours) to anybody who wants a cute friends-to-lovers romance.

Boring and predictable. It sounded so cute, but the formula was the regular standard. Simple and uninventive. Drama for the sake of drama, jealousy for the sake of jealousy, the same old story you would usually read. I kept reading, hoping it would get better, but nope. The ending was super cheesy too. I'm all for happy endings, but there is a point where it's too much lactose. It felt more like reading young-written fanfiction than anything that would've actually been published. If it weren't for the "hot guy makes a bet to sleep with the girl" trope, I would say it would be cute for tweens, but I personally feel like sex needs to wait for the teenage years, tweens still need more growing.

Cute enough for a quick read of no substance, but otherwise I would avoid it.

This was an ok and quick read. I thought it was quite obvious that Cole was into Sammy and her treatment of him was quite rude. It was nice reading a book which takes place in my home town although Jordan high is two minutes away from a mall so I don’t know why it would take them 15 minutes by freeway to get to one, people in Utah usually just call the U of U “the U”, and there is no way a high school would have a five day ski trip (way too pricey, I could see it being a day trip, five days seems crazy). Contains: mild language, teen drinking; kisses

If you have read (or watched) the series “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”. This book offers some serious ‘Peter’ flashbacks in the form of cute guy Cole and a ski trip.
However, instead of fake dating, this is a sweet, friends-to-lovers romance that sends sparks jumping off of the page.
If you are a fan of Jenny Han, this is the book for you!

Cute story

I really enjoyed this book, it was exactly what I hoped it would be. I have read others by this author and always like them a lot. Also, love the Salt Lake references (being from SLC myself) it’s fun reading about familiar places. If you want a cute and fast holiday romance, look no further.

YA holiday read that's a friend's to lovers, slow-paced romance.
Samantha has had a crush on her best friend for what seems forever but Cole is oblivious to it. Can seniors ski trip change it all?

I thought this was a cute short story. I would have liked a little more drama to the story but I enjoyed it. The epilogue was a nice end to the story but I felt it should have been set a few years later, maybe when they were finishing college. I would like to read their friend, Eva's story.

it feels like this book was written 10 years before it actually was, just peak trashy 2009 romance
absolutely no substance & she doesn't even try to make it long to hide that fact
that being said, it was an easy ride with a slightly cute romance so not horrible
