The artificial intelligence that guided our commune made me the Scientist King's exclusive lifetime companion.
I could have said no. I was heir to the Mystical Queen and guided by the Creator, not the AI.
But we were preparing for war. We needed to protect our people from the Encantus, a magical race we chased into another realm with technologies that harmed them.
The same Encantus I helped to escape the tyranny of their king, who migrated into our commune for a better life.
Becoming the Scientist King's companion was the optimum solution, not the perfect one. We cannot stop the war, but if we stand together - we can win.
Liza Cordero is a software engineer who studied UX, data science, and every new technology that caught her fancy. She was a science journal editor and a chemical engineer in her past life. But through all her misadventures and many pursuits, she writes.
Good book, enjoyed reading it. Fantasy and sci-fi are my favorite. The best part were the characters and the chemistry between them. The story is well written and keeps you hooked until you finish. Waiting for the author's next book.
The Scientist King is an exciting blend of science fiction and fantasy tropes, as the author, Liza Cordero, paints images of modern architecture and technology, with kimonos, artificial intelligence, magical realms, and fantastical powers.
My biggest take away from this book was with how Cordero builds a community of characters and creates chemistry between them. I haven’t read anything quite like this before, and I would recommend you give this superb debut a read.
A different kind of love story, with AI as matchmaker, and set in a different world, where science and magic collides (or unites)... Very interesting! I enjoyed reading this book...I love the characters and looking forward to the next books by the author, hopefully a series :) Highly recommended.
I felt for Layla during her difficult pregnancies. I don’t have a baby that was a different race, but I did have hard pregnancies. Layla’s relationships were so complex. I really enjoyed the book. I’m not a big fan of science fiction, but this mix of fantasy made me love this story. It’s a unique concept.
Despite it's name, this book is a lot more about magic than science.
But magic in a very technologic world, and it's curious how such scientific world decide that kingdoms are a better form of governement. The way rulers are chosen is probably the reason they works better.
I liked how the first meeting between the main couple happens, and it's a really beautyfull relationship they build together, each putting effort in, with respect on each side, and without "romantic violence". It's great and still realistic despite the magic/sci-fi setting.
The fact every chapter is from a different character, and not just the two mains ones, is great. It gives different points of views and insights in the story. It's interesting and unusual.
Layla has positives female friends, which is rare in romance books, even if most of the cast is male. People are caring and positive, and the few who have prejudices try genuinely to face them and not let them in the way of what is best for everyone. The fact a war is looming, that threats are discovered and need investigating makes it more complex than a simple love story, even if some of the investigations show how much people are relying on technology instead of themselves for answers.
But I liked the last part less. Layla seems a bit oblivious of her husband feelings when she is too attuned to everyone else, and she forgive him less things than she does others. It was a bit weird because other than that, she's a very strong character without having to take "male" characteristics.
Disclaimer Alert: I received this book in exchange for an honest Review.
Since that is out of the way, let's get started.
Also, my intended review is somewhere between 3 and 4. A solid 3.5 I would say.
When I started the book, I thought it was unnecessarily complex. I found the terms "Scientist King, Encantu King, Mystical Queen" odd and struggled to keep up with who was who. This eventually changed though as the story progressed.
A good portion of the story can be summarized as follows; The Scientist King with their Mystical Queen - bound by the AI that they kept out of their Commune. They didn’t trust the AI or the Scientist King, the dictated companionship did not sit well with Layla’s Commune members.
As the story progresses, you begin to see the book for what it is. A post modern society with an almost perfect blend of love, community, betrayal, science, magic and family.
Fun Fact: In the twenty-second century, we can detect a pregnancy as early as a week after intercourse.
The idea that a toddler could start talking at its toddler age doesn't quite settle with me though. Also, there are cases where the story was progressing almost too fast. So be up for that!
I'll admit that there are instances where Liza pulls one on you and you just have to settle down and absorb the shock. Tristan's death is a classic example.
I guess that wraps it up for the review. If you are interested in science fiction with a blend of romance (love) then you should take this up.
Scientist King is the epitome of a sci-fi,fantasy and romance genre book. It deals with a realm of the AI world and some light orthodox beliefs, the characters Isaac and Layla are brought together by their matchmaker i.e the AI as they battle it out together looking past all their differences to stand against the Enchantu King and protect the people of Enchantus. Liza Cordero sketches out the cross between the AI world and the Real world she depicts the beauty of the architecture in the story (penthouses, churches, clinics) the fashion and the chemistry of different character chapter after chapter. The progression of the various chapters and link to the storyline follows through just adequately and gives the readers the ease of reading and how each chapter provides us the perspective of the characters that gives us the forehand experience of the feeling ,the struggle each character succumbs

The Scientist King is a book that shocked me a lot, it's a bit difficult to describe the mix of emotions I experienced when reading it, it's just fascinating. I am not a person who enjoys science fiction books, but with this book was different, I like the fact that the story takes place in a technological world, but it is also strongly linked to magic. I found it very peculiar that ai have a great influence on the decisions of their masters, something I didn't expect. I feel that there was a good development of characters, I identified with layla a lot, everything I had to go through. I liked the structure of the reading very much, because I could feel what each character conveyed in each chapter, besides, when I finished one chapter, I wanted to read another one... I couldn't stop! In conclusion, it is a reading that I would recommend thanks to the concept and development of the story.
A completely new story with an amazing combination of the AI technology and magic. A really important lesson for all of us in the end. I loved the character of Layla. Such a strong girl! The story was quite good and long but it would have been better if there were more time to understand the characters and develop a connection with them. Maybe if it were a series, but it was a very good story nonetheless. I recommend it to all the readers. The way we see how humans are balancing their life between AI and magic and what permanent changes AI has brought in their lives. It's really interesting but a little worrisome. The author had a very good sense when it comes to AI, understanding that how AI can take over everything in the next century and how it can affect our love lives.
This story was intriguing, raising some questions about technological advances, magic, and a society of the future. At the same time, it presents a good reading novel, with well-constructed characters. It was a book that the reading of the text flowed with ease. I recommend it! Eu recomendo!
It is rare that I come across a sci-fi/fantasy book that feels fresh. This was one of them. The characters, while well developed, also seemed real to me. The mix of science and magic was well presented, the plot seemed plausible, and all in all this was a very good escapist read, just right for the times we find ourselves in. I was offered the chance to read this book for my review and am pleased to have had this opportunity.
It's a great read. Futuristic, people matched by machines, not themselves.Merging science with magic so easily.I think the title is misleading though,Scientist King is second to his companion. He is pulled by her every whim,he makes a very weak man, emotionally. Other than that, the book is a page turner.
The Scientist King was not my kind of read as I am not into science fiction and fantasy but still I did read it. The book will make you feel architecture and technology, kimonos, AI, magic and lots of fantasy. As a debut it is something really different. If you are into sci fi this book is surely for you.
Liza Cordero blended the worlds of magic, technology and humanity and created something beautiful reminding us that no matter what love always wins. I was on the edge of my seat throughout, just when you think a HEA was in sight she threw a wrench in the way. Amazing read!!!!!
