With a knack for talking to spirits, Dean’s job is to help the deceased find closure and pass on to the other side—when he’s not being needled by his sister-in-law’s ghost, that is.
But when a suspected haunting ends with a grisly murder, Dean finds himself thrown into a case much bigger—and deadlier—than he anticipated.
With a potential serial killer on the loose and a ghostly client demanding justice, Dean teams up with a local witch as he races to unmask a twisted, powerful murderer.
Will Dean be able to stop the killer from taking another victim—or will he join the spirit world himself?

Ghost Magnet is set between books 3 and 4 in the Grant Wolves series, but it is a standalone, full-length novel.
This book is clearly linked with characters from the Grant Wolves series of books, which I haven’t read, but is a totally separate book, with the main character Dean Torres being a man haunted by the deaths of two important women in his life and the aftereffects of his own near death experience in one of the car crashes. Since the car crash that he walked away from, he has been able to see and communicate with ghosts. He has taken it upon himself to help the spirits left behind after their deaths, to cross over and find peace on the other side. He is haunted permanently by the ghost of his sister-in-law Trish, his wife Leti’s sister. He can see and talk to her all the time and she has quite a solid presence. He has been mixed up in some hair raising experiences, being arrested, shot at, taken captive by a mind reading witch and nearly been killed a number of times, all while trying to act as a medium and help spirits.
Since he was held by the mind magic witch Marcus Madrigal, in Nevada, he has gained some new powers regarding ghosts. He is seeing more of them and they can now touch him and vice versa. Some of them are not exactly in a good head space and this leads to him being attacked at times. He passes a burning building and is stopped by a badly burned ghost, asking him to help rescue Sadie. He thinks it is her daughter and races into the burning building, only to discover it is her dog and he ends up being stuck with it. A couple of days later he is asked to help a Private Investigator from the Grant pack, of werewolves that is and who he shares a building with seven of, with a possible troublesome ghost. A lady called Mindi is finding someone has been getting into her locked apartment and moving some of her items. She also feels like she is being followed all the time. He goes to check it out but finds no trace of any spirits.
The next day she is dead and her ghost, whose body was brutally attacked and killed by someone, turns up in front of him demanding his help and blaming him for not helping her! This grisly murder was apparently not the first and it looks like a serial killer is starting off a run of attacks. Dean is heel bent on getting revenge for his client Mindi and finding out who was responsible for her death. When there are no police leads and no way the killer should have been able to get into the apartment, he asks his witch friend Cat for help to check for magical trace. Being under the weather herself, she puts him in touch with a young but powerful witch called Amber, who strangely doesn’t like to be touched! She confirms magic was involved and the local coven members are ruled out fairly quickly. They have to find out who the serial killer is and fast before he can kill another woman.
The only possible lead is the jealous ex-boyfriend of the first victim, who had a restraining order put on him, shortly before the woman’s death. Amber was able to read the magical trace and see who killed MIndi, as Mindi still hasn’t enough energy to come back to this plane of existence and remember fully all the details of her own death. The brutality of her death has caused a lot of the details to be blocked from her. At the same time, Dean is attracting more and more ghosts to him, often in double digits and finds he can get rid of them, but passes out from the energy this takes out of him. He doesn’t know what has happened and why he is drawing so many ghosts to him, but Trish says he is now glowing like a beacon, a ghost magnet, as the title says. Dean wants to keep Amber safe, but he is too late and he needs to find out where the serial killer is based if he is to save her. Whether either of them will survive the encounter with this witch and serial killer is dubious, with Dean having only a limited number of counter charms that Cat has given him to protect him against the witch. He has no power of his own and is going against someone much stronger than himself.
But the events of the last four years since he lost his wife Leti, have been difficult enough and left him determined to help others pass over and to act as a hero for many that need his help. Whether this be simply passing on a message or wrestling with helping them with unfinished business, he has grown accustomed to doing so. It is not an easy lifestyle and the strains of it are getting even more intense since the events in Nevada, but he can’t give up until he can help Leti’s sister Trish pass over. Until then, he needs to stay alive and do whatever he can to fight against any evil he finds. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book, which I read straight through in one sitting and I just wish I had read some more of this author’s books before now. I will certainly be looking up the Grant Wolves series, as so many of the characters in that series are part and parcel of this book. I hope this book is going to become a series of its own, as it certainly deserves to be and there is so much more for Dean to achieve. I can’t wait to read more of him, Amber, Trish and all the others. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the books above.
having read the Grant Wolves series I always felt there was an opening for a spin off Dean or Jessica/Sam story arc. This is not what I thought Dean's story would be. I imagined it as a story of how he learned what he knows, about his time in Mexico, etc. This is better.
It took me a bit to orient myself in the timeline. I also feel like there should have been overlap that there wasn't.
If you haven't read Grant Wolves yet, do that before reading this book, and before reading the next paragraph, there are GW spoilers.
if Adelaide was dead, there was only about a week before the alpha challenge that had Joey moving in. The alpha challenge took place the day before the funeral. Dean said Adelaide had been dead a couple of weeks. Nowhere in this book did it talk about either the time frame of everyone had to live in the Grant house OR that Joey was living at Chris's'house. It didn't impact the story, but it did confuse the timeline for me.
Love Dean. Love Amber, Love Trish. these primary characters are well fleshed and consistent in their behaviors.
The story -that a very annoying woman was murdered after Dean was unable to help her and Dean is compelled to help her after her death- is well done. It could have come out reading like a formula but the author neatly avoids that trap.
Overall, I would suggest reading this, but only AFTER finishing the Grant Wolves series.

It took me a bit to orient myself into this story but I believe from reading other reviews it is because I have not read the Grant Wolves series yet. Honestly even without the backstory this was a really enjoyable read with a fast paced story-line that keeps you reading.
I had difficulties downloading this book for some reason. I received it as an ARC from Booksprout and had to try 3 times before I was able to open it. I generally don't have any issues so I am assuming it was just a glitch in the system.
The MC Dean is a bit of an anti-hero but I like a multi-layered character and I enjoyed that he leans towards doing what is right and can play the hero but is also willing to walk the edge of the darker side of dealing with issues. This book has a very interesting world and characters and I am probably going to check out Grant Wolves.
Overall, I would suggest reading this book but to save any confusion in the plot and timeline I highly suggest reading the Grant Wolves series first.

Dean's life took an abrupt turn after an accident, leaving him with one foot in the grave... which means he can speak to the dead. Earning a living as a medium to assist ghosts crossing over, Dean enters into a new world of supernatural. But his ghosting speaking abilities have been changing, his living and dead situation is escalating, and there's a dude out there that likes to mutilate women. Can Dean stop the psycho, save the girl, and take care of a new pup? Only his magnetic personality will tell.
Here's what I didn't like: There's not much to list here. If you don't like spoilers, then there are some minor spoilers for grant wolves 1-3, but nothing all too crazy at all. Oh, Dean didn't have a tire iron once.
Here's what I liked: Dean's smart mouth. Trish. Sadie. How dean deals with some of his magic. The scene with Leti.
Overall, this was fast paced, funny, and a great story. Highly recommend.
I loved every chapter, every paragraph, every line and every full stop. Dean has become a favourite Ghost Magnet of mine and I do so hope that Lori will find another adventure for him, Trish and Amber, not forgetting the werewolves in whose house he shares, because I will be first in the queue to have it downloaded onto my Kindle. I'm now turning my had to reading the Grant Wolves collection of 6 books. See you all later, I'm busy reading.
A really enjoyable read! I liked finding out about Dean’s abilities and his unique way of handling things. He’s a bit of an anti-hero but definitely leaning more towards hero territory. Good storyline and great mix of interesting characters. I’d be very interested in finding out what happens next. Also, what happened before? Seems like a adventure...
This is a well written book with strong well developed characters and an entertaining story line. The author does a great job building the story and pulling you in with all the intrigue and humor. It's a fast paced story and I enjoyed reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Ghost Magnet by Lori Drake is an awesome story to read. I loved reading this story very much cause it has ghost and mystery in the story and I can not wait to read more from this author. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about fantasy and suspense in their stories.

The story line was good, the character work was great, and the book had a smooth flow to it. This is the first book by this author that I've read, but it won't be the last. I look forward to the next book.
