A Vigil in the Mourning

Rate this book
The devil you know is never the one you should trust. Special Agent Patrick Collins is dispatched to Chicago, chasing a lead on the Morrígan’s staff for the joint task force. Needing a cover for his presence in the Windy City, Patrick is ordered to investigate a politician running for mayor. In the lead up to election day, not everything is what it seems in a city where playing to win means appeasing the gods first and the electorate second. But Chicago brings its own set of problems outside the a stand-offish local god pack, a missing immortal, and Patrick’s twin sister. Fighting Hannah and the Dominion Sect provides Patrick with a sinister reminder that some blood ties can never be cut. Left behind in New York City, Jonothon de Vere finds himself targeted by hunters who will go through anyone to kill him—including the packs under his protection. With a bounty on his head, Jono is forced to make a choice that Patrick would never approve of. Doing so risks breaking the trust he’s built with the man he loves, but not acting will give the rival New York City god pack leverage Jono can’t afford to give up. When Patrick and Jono reunite in Chicago, Patrick must confront the fraying of a relationship he’s come to rely on for his own sanity. But fixing their personal problems will have to wait—because Niflheim is clawing at the shores of Lake Michigan and the dead are hungry.

Stars!

I have happily been thrown into this supernatural world and have enjoyed every second of it. The characters, the myth's, the romance, the cases, and the strong sense of pact and family this author has created is completely enthralling.

If you can believe it, this book had more action in it then any of the previous books. It was non-stop and it kept my fingers swiping the pages as fast I could read them.

Patrick is swept off to Chicago on a case for the SOA and another one for the Norn's. But on his arrival he realizes he will facing more trouble than he signed on to handle. He's brought with him, Wade, who brings some slight comic relief from all the chaos happening around them.
Jono is back in New York facing his own troubles. He's been targeted by Knight Hunter's who only stop when their target has been terminated. But our boy Jono has no plans of being taken out and does some things Patrick will not be too happy about. Only he doesn't tell Patrick any of what is happening in New York. Sage is extremely angry about this because she knows it won't bode well for Jono when Patrick finds he has been left of the loop.

Chicago brings another monumental fight that involves another God's head with Ethan and Hannah at the forefront of the fight. It was the edge of your seat, blood pumping, action packed thrill I have come to expect from this series. I can't recommend this book/series more.

Happy reading dolls! xx

Book one occurred in June, book two in August, book three in December and book four starts in February. While the timeline is long between each book, I feel like the main plot doesn't go forward. It's just a new fight in each book, but it's all on standstill. And while it's cute with Wade's continuing eating all the freaking time, it's also getting tiering. It's all he's talking about. I want some development for him - some growth.

Overall, I skimmed some bits in this book, that I didn't do with the other three previous ones. While the story was interesting to a point, it kinda felt like the same thing over and over again, to be honest. I wish we got more depth, more of the feeling that they are actually taking a step forward, and I wish there was more possessiveness between the two main characters. I more Lucien to love and protect Patrick. There's a whole lot I want, and I'm not getting it and it's effecting my enjoyment of the book and the series as a whole.

Characters & Information/Spoilers:
The list is LONG so I've put it in a spoilers tag.

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Urban Romance (M/M).
Series: - Series, Book Four.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Jonothon ‘Jono’ de Vere.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Sure.
Will I read this again in the future? - Unsure.
Rating - 2.5/3 stars.

Amazing!!!

Absolutely loved this plot, I was engaged the whole time, the main characters are so cute, loved their chemistry, one of them I want to shake to wake him up... but on the other side I kind of understand him. Really intereasint mystery, congratulations to Hailey Turner!!!!

I have to say, the action scenes were spectacular, but I missed more of the romance and intimacy between the main characters.

I also have this book on Audible, Gary Furlong is always competent, the acting was just superb, he was fully committed to it, kudos to him!

Now, after reading the fourth book of the Soulbound Series, I can say with no uncertainty that I love this series even more than at the beginning. The characters grow on me with each book. And it very much reminds me of Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews, because the series really gets better with each installment. And although the action is in the foreground in this series, the relationship between the couple and the supporting cast is a wonderful balance to it all.

Honestly, this book has everything I like in a UF series: meddling and fickle gods, mages, were-creatures, a dragon fledgling, vampires, fae, mythology, magic, smart writing, and dry witted humor.

Besides all of the above, the relationship between Patrick and Jono is getting stronger with each book. The author doesn’t waste her time on relationship drama, instead Patrick and Jono get things done by working through situations and move on. After appropriate groveling, of course.

The addition of Wade, the fledgling dragon, is just the icing on the cake. He brings the comedic relief in certain situations. He is still very much a bottomless pit and needs to be fed every minute of the day (ok that’s an exaggeration) but still, he eats constantly and I love him for it. He is definitely my favorite supporting character, and the best thing that could have happened to Patrick and Jono. One growing family.

Furthermore Jono’s pack is growing as well. It’s very much something that makes me happy. Because in the end, this is the one thing that an Alpha needs more than anything, a growing pack. And honestly I can’t wait until they kick someone’s ass.

Overall, this fourth book might be my favorite book so far in this series. Although Patrick and Jono have some issues to work through, as can be seen in the blurb, they manage to find a way to get it done. And I really loved that Jono joined Patrick in Chicago, because honestly, these two are the happiest when together, and I feel the same. It’s really no exaggeration when I say that I devoured this book in one sitting.

At this point, this series is on the very top of my tbr. I’ll be dropping everything just to read more about Patrick, Jono and now Wade too

Reread/Relisten #6: June 2024

What a ride this series is! I love being able to come back to these characters and adventures!

But taking a quick break because a lot of books I’ve been waiting for have just been released on audio! But I’ll be coming back to book 5 soon!

Reread/Relisten #5: February 2024

I am still mind blown on how this series comes together with all the gods, and characters, each have their own distinctive voice, and I LOVE THEM ALL (except for Estelle and Yousef, and their pack lol)

Reread/Relisten #4: September 2023

there are no words for how Hailey Turner is able to weave these stories together and keep them engaging and all the characters you meet feel real!

Reread/Relisten #3: January 2023

The complexities that this series goes through is crazy, and i love every minute of it!

Reread/relisten #2: September 2021

How Hailey Turner meshes all these different Gods together and doesn't get it confused is beyond me. I can't believe how well this series is put together still blows my mind after the third read in!

Wade still steals the show, especially with his sassy teen comments haha

Reread and relisten #1: June 2021

Same as before, loving being able to go back to this cast of characters and go along for their ride.

4.5 stars: March 2021

I really am enjoying this whole series! I am so glad I decided to give it another chance.

The audiobooks make the experience that much better as well, the only main complaint about them would be how sometimes the women characters sound like Patrick, no real difference in the characters which can make it hard to follow sometimes.

Overall Wade will be one of my favorite characters from this series, his relationship with Jono and Patrick is amazing. He brings the much-added humor to a tense and serious atmosphere.

Full review tomorrow when I'm at the laptop.

***

Every time I think Hailey Turner has written her best book, she produces another which knocks the socks off me.

This one is just the same and is fighting with book one in this series as my favourite yet. I love how she constantly surprises me with her mix of well-known mythologies - here it's the Norse Æsir getting an airing - and lesser known but equally as interesting Gods and legends.

We meet Hinon, (also known as Hé-no, an Haudenosaunee/Iroquois thunder god) and his arch enemy the water serpent Oniare, hiding beneath the waters of Lake Michigan 😁

It's also the first book to venture out of New York to another American location (rather than the jaunt through Ireland in A Crown of Iron & Silver and sees Patrick hunting for the Morrigan's missing staff in Chicago.

I loved the whole premise of this book. The separation tension grows between Patrick and Jono, as he's left behind in New York to deal with the treacheries of the other God Pack's alphas, build alliances with unlikely allies and avoid ancient hunters sent to end his life.

But, even when they're angry with each other, the love and connection between them is still powerfully emotive. These books are paranormal suspense and mystery first, but the heart and soul of them is the relationship between the mage and the wolf shifter.

A complex plot weaves its way into Norse legends but it never feels overwhelming and as the drive towards the ending grew closer, I couldn't put my Kindle down!

While each book in this series follows a similar pattern, I never feel like I'm reading the same story over again, there are always subtle differences and each book brings a new level of depth to the relationship between the two men.

Bring on the rest of the series because I cannot wait to see where Hailey's going to take me next, especially given the revelations of what occurs in this book's narrative.

Loved everything about this book.
Loved that Patrick didn't take any rash and stupid decisions.

Loved Wade and his bottomless stomach and teenage angst.

Loved all the Gods that showed up here. So many!

Hermes you little shit! Loved you too. #Pattycakes

But the MVP for me was definitely Jono...swoony swoony Jono being all badass and powerful and then just melting for Patrick and calling him Pat and Love. Sigh. #BookBoyfriend

Also Gary Furlong is a GENIUS.

“Because Patrick was every bit of hope Jono had ever wanted - bright and shinning and worth a war.”

Jono’s devotion and love for Patrick are truly unmatched. ❤️

In this book, we get a bit of separation between the Patrick and Jono duo. While Patrick heads to Chicago to track down The Morrigan’s staff, only to get tangled up with the Norse gods, Jono remains in New York, defending their new pack territory and forging alliances with other preternatural communities. Even though they spend a good chunk of the book apart, their love and longing for each other are palpable, making every moment of their reunion even more rewarding.

Patrick’s journey is full of chaos, thanks in part to Wade and his bottomless appetite and mischief bring an extra dose of funny interactions. Of course, things take a turn for the worse when Daddy Dearest and his cult make their move, once again attempting to steal a new godhead. Thankfully, the pack is reunited, and after some well-earned groveling, Patrick and Jono are back together, just in time to fight gods and deal with the chaos they bring from the hells.

Seriously, Jono and Patrick are adorable together, especially with their little-found family, acting as Wade’s adopted dads.

Special shoutout to the valkyries and Brynhildr, because they are absolute badasses!🗡️

“It was strange to think this was his life now - this mix of magic and family and pack that was all he'd ever wanted since being infected by the werevirus and never thought he'd get. Looking out over the gathered crowd, Jono realized he wouldn't change anything in his past that had brought him here.”

I ended my review of the third book like this…

This is the third book in an already fantastic series that seems to be gaining more momentum and not slowing down. Jeez, really, they just keep getting better and better.

…and I’m going to start my review of the fourth with the same sentiment. This book was a fantastic addition to a series that seems to be gaining more momentum and not slowing down.

No joke. I don’t see an end in sight. I don’t need an end, like ever, and I swear the writing, the stories, the adventure, excitement and all the unbelievable twists and turns just keep getting better. I feel like all my reviews are like this but man, Hailey really did it again.

I love a book that takes me what feels like forever to read because it is just that good and there is just so much to it and this book read HUGE.

I love a book that makes me research and want to better educate myself. I loved reading about the Gods and their myths. I loved how well she knew their stories and intertwined them into the world she has created. It was really amazing to read.

So, in this book, Patrick and Jono are separated for a bit, off doing separate dangerous things. Truthfully, I am not a fan of my couple not being together in my read but somehow I didn’t feel the separation. It flowed and for as long as it did last it made sense and I like what came out of it.

Wade. God, what a scene and book stealer. I just love him and love how every book he becomes so much more but remains a teenager. He really is stealing the show.

Overall, I don’t think I have a single complaint. I can’t wait to see what is next. It feels scary and close. War is coming and preparations and alliances are being made.

I’m not ready but really can’t wait.

Good stuff.

Gosh, I love Soulbond series so much! Every book rediscovers long forgotten deities, introduces new characters and is such a roller coaster. I love how Ms Turner cleverly combines mythology and modern times showcasing Gods in new light, how she creates such quirky relatable characters and weaves fast paced engrossing stories. This time around Norse mythology was at the forefront combined with magical beings and god pack rivalries. I practically inhaled it. There were some things that I finally figured out in regards to Patrick's soul debt and what it entailed. Wow, I can't wait to read how the author untangles that!

This time Patrick combines his magic abilities with that of investigator to tackle several cases having single connection that of the Morrigan's staff. I like how Ms Turner throws a hint here, then another there and slowly builds up to the intense finale that is always full of struggle, overwhelming emotions and deathly fighting. All those Gods are running amok like naughty children, and in the epicenter is Patrick who despite being a mortal finds a way to live another day.

I loved Jono and Patrick's relationship woes, Wade's shenanigans and Jono being the god pack alpha he was meant to be. He is such a good and fair leader. I can't wait to see Estelle get her a$$ handed to her by Jono. The intricacies of paranormal politics, the magic and the sheer amount of Gods living in the modern world were beautifully written. Wouldn't that be something if that were true? Anyway, another amazing chapter in Patrick and Jono's quest to stay alive and be happy. I enjoyed it so much. This series is absolutely fantastic. Every book is wonderful. This is definitely one of my favorite series.

Recently, no book I've read really made me enjoy the process. That's why I decided to read A Vigil in the Mourning, because I know this is a fantastic series and I liked all the books that have been published so far. And A Vigil in the Mourning fulfilled its task, no doubt. Although, it seems to me that this book may be a tad not as good as the previous ones. Just a little bit. And generally it doesn't matter. It can only be my fault and my lack of interest in reading altogether.

I tried to analyze everything very meticulously and answer the question what exactly was not as great as in previous books. And it seems to me that the plot is not as interesting as before. I'm not sure why. That is, of course, we see again the well-known motif of the gods interfering in human affairs. The stakes are high. But it lacks something, some of what was in previous books. Maybe mystery. Yes, I think that's it. I was not as interested in discovering the truth as before. Because the mystery is not as interesting and complicated as before.

I thought that a big problem for me would be the separation of the main characters. Patrick goes to Chicago while Jono stays in New York. I usually don't like it very much. And here, additionally, Jono makes some decisions at that time that could potentially conflict with Patrick. But I was unnecessarily afraid. Because subsequent chapters are written sequentially from the point of view of Patrick and Jono, as we know from previous books. And since both men are equally interesting and the situation in both cities is equally attention-grabbing, this was not a problem. I do not like this idea in my books because it usually means the absence of one of the characters, often throughout the whole book, but in this case there is not such thing. I am also very happy that the big quarrel between Jono and Patrick ended quickly and in such a mature way. Finally two adult men who do not sulk for half a series and who want to work on their relationship. Very refreshing.

It's nice to see Jono and Patrick stand for each other. They make a really nice couple. I am very happy that so far the author decided to base the story of all of the books on the dangers that both of them have to face, and not on misunderstandings in their relationship. This shows that you can write some great books in a fantastic series, in which the main characters cooperate with each other all the time, and does not deal with a lack of communication in a relationship.

I hope that the next books in this series will be equally good. What an amazing series!

I would read these books for Wade alone. All my favourite scenes/lines featured him. I just can’t get enough.

That said this wasn’t the runaway 5* read I was expecting.

I love Jono, Patrick and the gang. And I think that’s where the problem was. And yes before you say it I am impatient. I know that. But I wanted more Estelle and her god pack. I wanted my guys together fighting for their future. I know I’ll get that. The scene is being set. And I was thrilled at first with the turf war and the night court but...
Slightly less so with Patrick in Chicago. It was exciting and almost nonstop but it was the Dominion Sect again and I knew how it would all play out. Yes it’s moving forward but I want it to go on forever at the same time I want it to end so I can have my HEA. There’s just no pleasing some people.

Holy Norse Gods!

Could this be my favorite of the series this far??
Maybe!! 4.75 Stars!

Welcome to the Windy City as Patrick investigates the whereabouts of a missing relic and soul payments. See Wade eat his weight in hot dogs.

Meanwhile, back in the Big Apple, Jono wheels and deals for recognition of his god pack while avoiding deadly threats.

Distance does make the heart grow fonder, but also makes for keeping secrets. Ahhh, not your best moments, Jono. Patrick is right to be pissed with you.

Worry not, Jono does not end up sleeping on the couch & the make-up sex is divine!

Lots of Norse gods and immortals about, so brush up on these wintry deities. My favorite? The Valkyries—wait ‘till you get a load of their rides!!

Sublime narration by Gary Furlong!

Ahhhhh Jono, you silly goose. Thank you for making enough bad decisions that we got to have a delightful little groveling moment lol

Honestly, I feel like if you get to this point in the series, you know what you’re in for. Is it much of the same? Yeah it kind of is, but I’m having a great time and I love these characters and I’m burning through them at an alarming rate. Honestly if I didn’t have work and real life commitments I would be going through them faster than I am already 😂.

5+++ awesome stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This has quickly become one of my very favourite series.

I am so invested in Jono, Patrick, and all of the other characters. I especially love Jono though.

Their cases and adventured are so different, and always keep me riveted.

I've always had an interest in mythology, and these books make me want to do a deep dive into researching all the different Gods.

On to book 5!

I was hesitant to start this book, in part because of the geographical separation the blurb mentioned. Even though I thought it would be a good thing, Jono could definitely benefit from it, I hoped he would grow more into his role without Patrick by his side. Regardless I was apprehensive about it. But it turned out not to be a problem.

Now about that character development: It didn't happen. Jono is definitely trying, but I just have to admit defeat with his character. There's something missing for me there. Patrick doesn't seem to learn from his mistakes. But what really annoyed me is Wade's character. I adore him, truly, but he could have a personality you know. He isn't just a person who's only thought is food, food and food. I get it, he is a dragon, but he must have other traits. I am really hoping that we get to know him better as a person, and he wouldn't be identified only by his dragon behavior.

Overall I felt this book was a filler. It had the same recipe as the previous ones. Take a set of gods (Norse this time. Hello Thor and Loki!), make them fuck up something, call up Patrick to fix it. Same old, same old. With this installment we didn't get closer to the endgame, it didn't add anything to the overall plot, the big picture. No character development, no relationship development. In fact I was really annoyed with a decision Jono made, which he knew would backfire, but he did it anyway. :/
So in short, filler.

I thought it was risky to bring in the Norse gods after the Avenger movies' success. I wondered how the author would tackle it. But to me the characters were the same as in the movies. Maybe Thor was a bit more careless. And Odin was just an asshole, unlike in the movies. But everyone else was the same I feel. And I think that was the right decision.

And even though the author's writing style did not change, I noticed some minor things that annoyed me.

I liked this book just fine and I'm still invested in the series, I will see it through.

This book is amazing! I love the Soulbond series and this book, while stressful, shows how brilliant the author is. Jono and Patrick have been through a lot in this series so far, now they're halfway across the country from each other and their relationship is tested like no other.
Even though Jono and Patrick have their issues they prove they are stronger than anything, even the gods who are using them.
This book has all the action of the previous ones and it's amazing to see how these characters have grown. They've always worked well together but the closer they get the more they trust one another, the faster and more easier it is to work together and it means they have a deeper understanding of what the other needs when their out in the field.
I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series though I'm scared of what else the author is going to throw at them.

Damn, Hailey Turner has hit it out of the park for me again! She quickly became one of my drop-everything-and-read authors but this series is one of the best urban fantasies out there. *I feel like I should add "in my humble opinion", but why lie? LOL.*

There was a LOT going on in this book, and it was utterly gripping all the way through. When I finally got a chance to really sit down and read undisturbed last night, I could not put it down. I was completely lost in the story, as per my sons who say they tried to talk to me, but nothing else existed for me but this universe and these book-people. Every book in this series is tense and exciting and events literally race across the page. HT's battle scenes are superb. But the thing I enjoyed here the very most *besides, let's be honest, all the awesome ass-kicking* was the growth Patrick showed, both personally and in his relationship with Jono. *swoon*

God, I love them. They both definitely still have some work to do on their communication. But when Jono hurt Patrick *however well intended*, where previously Patrick might have bolted or shut Jono down completely, he stayed and worked it out. He still can't say those words he's so terrified of but he shows them to Jono. And how I love Jono! I love how open he is with letting Patrick know how he feels, how protective he is, though he respects Patrick's ability to defend not only himself but Jono as well. It's a true two-way street with that, though Jono would love to coddle Patrick. LOL, we know that's never happening. :) And I love their determination to protect everyone who needs it. I just hope that cost isn't too high.

And to keep things from getting too fraught, you can always count on Wade to make you laugh, no matter what else is going on! The kid and his sticky fingers and bottomless stomach never fail to entertain, as well as his teenage grumbling and Patrick and Jono's parenting. It's one of my favorite things! <3

This story and this series is a total win on every level with me. There are supernats of every kind, gods and goddesses, evil sorcerers, monsters, mages and dragons. There are so many amazing characters, both good and bad, the writing is incredible and the plots and world building are extraordinary. There is nothing else any lover of stories could want...except more of it. And I am so here for that!

Well, what a rollercoster of a book. It's absolutely PACKED with action, with twists and turns and shocking moments, and LOTS of meddling gods and goddesses.

I was kind of afraid I wasn't going to love this book as the previous ones, since Patrick heads off to Chicago for a case, while Jono stays in New York City to deal with pack issues, but I should have trusted Hailey Turner and her masterful storytelling. Not only the book is as fantastic as the previous ones, I actually loved that we get to see Patrick being his usual badass self alone. I reminded me of "A Ferry of Bones & Gold" when Patrick had to deal with cases alone and the story also has a similar vibe, with the Dominion Sect finally back on the frontlines. Jono and Patrick's separation doesn't last long and their relationship matures in such a beautiful way that it nearly made me cry.

This book is also jam-packed with Norse mythology and *screams* I loved it. The story and worldbuilding is well-thought and well-made and, for once (I can hear Patrick sighing in my mind), I really REALLY loved most of the gods and goddesses involved (especially a certain group of moterbike-riding warriors *coughs*). And those last chapters were absolutely chilling and beautiful.
"A Vigil in the Mourning" has warlike and weighty atmosphere that I really loved: you can actually feel that a war is starting and now I'm both terrified and excited to go ahead with the fifth book.

Jono & Patrick

Another great addition to this series.

Patrick work leads him to a case in Chicago leaving behind Jono and their pack. The case turns into a huge mess that involves Gods and the dominion sect.

There are also things that Jono has to tend to in New York to keep his pack safe.

The two are reunited when Patrick calls him to Chicago.

These two are still great together and Patrick's father is still a pr*ck.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I do wish we got more on Jono and pack business. How many more books will there be?

Review:
This was another great book in the series!

These are great characters, and their relationships are super sweet. All the relationships—the romantic one between Patrick and Jono, and the found family they’ve created with their friends and their pack, especially Wade, the sometimes petulant but lovable teenage dragon. I also really enjoy getting to see an established romantic relationship that grows over the course of a series with ups and downs, rather than just the beginning of a romance.

This book also had the usual action-packed plot. This time it was about Norse gods.

I feel like these books are becoming kind of similar, like there’s not much difference between them (a bit of relationship stuff but no big changes, a sex scene or two, some battles with gods and the Dominion Sect) and the overall plot about the staff isn’t being pushed forward much, but I still enjoy them.

The audiobook narration by Gary Furlong was good. I still feel like it’s a bit flat, but I can’t tell if that’s a stylistic choice or if maybe English just isn’t his original accent. It still sounds natural though, and dialogue sounds good with the right emotion when necessary.

Overall I enjoyed this, I like these characters and their little found family, and I’m looking forward to more of their story.

Surprise, surprise. I liked this too. Who would have thought?

The book was very much a five star read too though the first two books are still my favourite so far.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but even though I read the blurb before I start reading the book, I kinda feel like I’m going in blind. The plot almost always goes in a different direction than the one I expected.

Which is why I’m still waiting on the god pack war to escalate. But the gods have a tendency to get in the way with their drama and their need for saving.

Oh well, it’s not like I mind.

I’m just obviously impatient. That’s on me.

Jono remains the best thing. Where is my Jono, goddammit! If only he were real. But alas :(

His relationship with Patrick is really great. I remain annoyed at this series for spending so much time on other worldbuilding stuff that I don't give a damn about.

(DEUTSCH WEITER UNTEN)

I can’t say for sure whether the writing style has improved or I’m just hooked and don’t care about anything else. Who cares? Not me anymore xD

By now I’m extremely invested and I can already see the despair coming when I get to volume seven. Ugh.
Patrick and Jono and Wade and all the gods - THE GODS!!!!

I won’t say more or I’ll spoil, but let me tell you → this isn’t just about sex, this thing has fucking plot and that’s how I love my books <3

(DEUTSCH)

Ich kann nicht genau sagen, ob der Schreibstil besser geworden ist, oder ich einfach nur noch hooked bin und mir alles andere egal ist. Who cares? Not me anymore xD

...bright and shining and worth a war.

Another great addition to the series! A Vigil in the Mourning brought myths I was very very familiar with and it was interesting to read bout Turner's take on them in this universe. There was quite a bit of action throughout the book as well, but the plot felt like it took a step a bit further away from the overall series arc? This felt a tiny bit more like a filler in a way the previous novel didn't--like pieces were just being moved around so things can happen in the next novel.

The characters continued to be their lovely selves. The focus this time was mostly on Patrick, Jono, and Wade, so I did miss the pack a little bit. Patrick and Jono were also away from each other during the first half and I really liked the way Turner developed their stories and showed them acting as individuals without the other there to show support. It was good character development.

I loved loved loved loved the progression in regard to Jono and the god pack. It was still not at the point I hoped, but I can see it slowly come together. Turner has been great at moving the pieces and presenting new challenges and this has been one of my favorite subplots in the entire series. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with myself once that climax hits.

Overall, I'm still very much in love with this series. A Vigil in the Mourning was a fast read with lots of action and good character development overall. It answered a few questions presented in previous novels while at the same time setting things up for what's to come. Still recommend this to all Fantasy fans looking for a refreshing and creative series!
