Was a very slow moving book, and while the latter quarter of the story really took off, it felt too little by the time you actually reach that point in the book. The writing itself was clean and professional, that I'm willing to try another book by this author. Hopefully this was just a story that didn't sit well with me. It was also the first post-apocalyptic story I've read in quite a while!

Meh. Emotion Focused, Dialog Heavy, Lacking Action

When you get 67% through the book, while STILL waiting for it to really "start"?? Urgh.
The character development is there to be sure. I especially love the young hacker. Only if the whole story could be about him. As his character is the most interesting and entertaining aspect of the book.
But beyond that, it's all just .... build up. No real action. Like getting on that roller coaster, ticking up the big hill with the expectation that you will soon reach the top, go screaming over the edge, and off you will go -- flying along, enjoying the rest of the ride! (Like most books.)
Well here, you will find yourself only slowly and annoyingly after awhile, ticking endlessly up that hill. Slowly building up to ..... ?? I have no idea.
I just couldn't take it anymore and had to give up on the book. I hesitate to even call it a "story" as there almost isn't enough meat within either main line to consider it such. And I RARELY if ever give up on a book! Always try to find the redeeming qualities.
Another annoying aspect is the going back and forth between the two main storylines - they are too short. Or it could be just in the way they are written? You FINALLY get a watered down crumb of action kicking off within one storyline and wham, it switches to the other. Starting off in a dull spot there in the other storyline. Making you yearn to go back and continue with what may be a possible build-up/peaking in action where you just left. Instead of having to start over again, from dull inaction.... Over and over. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Maddening, dull, and uninteresting.
Also do not expect the level of action, fighting, or intensity found in 98% of apocalyptic type books. It's just not here. Seems as if not only is the author afraid of swearing, and using harsh aggressive language, he also feels shy about violence, weapons, real fighting, etc. Basically - all that we've come expect with this genre. Now, yes of course there are a bunch of different ways to approach this subject matter out there. I just wasn't expecting this manner. I've never come across it before in my 7+ years of daily reading within this genre.
Best way to describe this book is:
A clean, plodding, dialogue heavy, emotion focused, PG, apocalypse book.

Leuk boek waar je snel doorheen leest. Vooral op het einde begon het spannend te worden.

This could be the start of a very promising series. I have listened to many of this authors audiobooks and they’re all very very good. This one is no exception. It will send you on a cross country chase that is more intriguing with each chapter. The story reads as two separate stories that will eventually come together at some point. The characters are well developed and you begin to care from them right from the start. I should say you love others more and you just hate to love some in this book as well. The narrator was great! I’ve listen to several audiobooks done by him and I really really like the way he performs all of his female and male characters. He can do young voices and old voices and really mixes in some charm to the book. I cannot wait to see where the series goes next. I love across country apocalyptic road trip!

I'm not a big fan of the first scene giving a glimpse as to what will happen. Other than Elisha, Liam and Garcia, it was hard to find people to cheer for. I get that both Alex and Sophie would be desperate to get to California, but I find it hard to believe that, given their pre-apocalypse professions, they would have treated the preacher and his wife so poorly. They bicker all the time and Sophie's slight redemption at the end did little to make me like her. Ryan was complex but at least was not an adult. I will likely read book two because I generally like this author and I want to know what happens to Elisha.

As Our World Ends is the first book in this series. I really thought it was going to be another EMP story. Well, it wasn't, but it easily could have been. I guess the author wanted technology to still work, but have the end come as brutally as possible, so he reverted to an old scifi trope, orbital bombardment. Needless to say, the scene is set, and of course, the main characters have all kinds of troubles getting where they want to go, and oddly enough, some towns are moving right along as if nothing happened. I suppose that could happen, but it seems a bit far fetched, considering the speed of news these days. And, if that's the case, why does the internet not work at all. The entire network is built on the premise that it will continue operating in case of a disaster. Here comes this disaster, and poof, no internet. Makes me think the author doesn't really know how it actually works, but that's neither here nor there.
The story is done well enough, even if sometimes the characters act like morons when otherwise they're intelligent thinkers working out moves several steps in advance. Seems more of a plot gimic than anything else. But, still, the story works, and I'll probably read more in this series, need to see just how off the beaten path this one goes.

Different apocalypse..

Different kind of apocalypse, but still life changing.
Alex & Sophies marriage is over. Both consumed by their son's death, they have lost the ability to console one another. Divorce is in the picture.
Sophie has moved to California while Alex remains in North Carolina. Forced to take a vacation from his job, Alex plans to head out west to visit his daughter in school. Meanwhile, Sophie shows up to collect signed divorce papers. She is a foster parent and is picking up 16 year old Ryan.( He has a past but he is brilliant).
Before anyone can go anywhere, several cities in the US is destroyed. Petaluma, where Sophie lives & their daughter goes to school is destroyed. The commitment for them both is to find their daughter. They will face many obstacles before leaving N C. Drug dealers, cyber theft, & gangs who are hot on their trail.
Meanwhile in California, Elisha, their daughter is in trouble too.
Who will save who?
Lots of action, some guns & destruction with confusion. I like this author. He has created likeable characters and the storyline is different. Looking forward to seeing where this goes...☺

This story is full of mysteries. The United States is crippled by some sort of cyber-attack, at least according to the book title. The internet, communications, and the power grid go down. On top of that, there are unexplained explosions; perhaps downed airliners? No one takes responsibility for the mysterious cyber-attack and soon that is forgotten in the story. Alex Reid is a Coast Guard rescue swimmer in the process of divorcing his wife Sophie. These two quibble and argue throughout the story. Their daughter is also a Coast Guard rescue swimmer following in Daddy’s footsteps. Alex is determined to find his daughter. Sophie and her newly acquired expert hacker son must accompany him in his quest. Then there’s Garcia the police officer dealing with the city chaos and random drug dealers. Garcia has his set of problems. One of these dealers is friends with Sophie’s foster son. If all this sounds confusing, it is. There are way too many perplexing issues going on for my enjoyment. If I didn’t already have the second volume, I doubt if I would purchase it. Maybe the next book will eliminate some of this confusion.

Unique apocalyptic catalyst, decent characters, even if they make dumb decisions sometimes. All in all, this is a good read, it just didn't have what I was looking for.
It seemed like it would, given that it has traumatized characters and multi-POV with a set up for a nice slow burn, second chance romance arc.
But for such a short book, there were too many POV characters to really get attached to them in the timeframe of the story, and the since it's short, the slow burn didn't really go anywhere yet.
As I said, it's still good.
Just not as... emotional as I was hoping for.

Interesting, but irritating as well.

So the plot of the story is good, and most of the characters are interesting, but Sophie is made to look like an idiot. I hate when women do the stupidest things in books or movies, then blame others. Then, she says to herself Alex wanted the divorce so maybe he left the group on their own when SHE flew there to make him sign divorce papers because she wanted it over. So, for the reason that the woman is an idiot, I have it a three!

This book is good from beginning to end. It was a fascinating book as is many of Jack hunts books that I have read.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It seems to portray a family with real problems that really need to be worked out and the people have to work together to work through their situations as in a real family. It makes one wonder how would I react in the apocalypse? Looking forward to the next book in the series.

If I could give it minus 10 I would. So imagine a 6-year-old is telling you a story with a pile of plastic action figures. You know the "and then" embellish the story more, rinse and repeat. It was truly dreadful, plastic one-dimensional characters absurd back story. How bad, I quiet 30 pages before the end. I kept pushing forward until my sanity preservation stepped in.

This author has a huge following, I will try another series at a later date, maybe this series was a one-off.

Another Super Duper Story by Jack Hunt

I don't know why all of Jack Hunt's characters come across so well. He just really knows how to create them I guess. This series is no different, you get connected to one or two immediately and before you know it you care about them all. This is a great story line as well, a bit scary seeing how this could probably come to pass. Bottom line is that it is top quality entertainment that you won't regret spending time and money on.

Eyes opening! World changing, great concept

This book is fascinating, gripping page turning exhilarating and most of all intriguing, this writer has a great grasp of bringing you into each character’s life and making you want them to succeed and survive! Great cliffhangers and fascinating events and timelines, this is one of those books that keeps you up all night

Enjoyed

I enjoyed this book and the action that starts off from the get go. A bit of a different concept that just a standard EMP, I look forward to seeing how the details of the attack develop and how these characters rally together. I also enjoyed the introduction of the gangs looking to capitalize. That is a detail that is unfortunately all too realistic.

I was going to stop reading this book half way through, but I should have. The only characters I cared about weren't the main ones...Liam & Garcia. I also feel there was a HUGE gap in developing Ryan. So much that could have been done and wasn't. The ending...help from the town's people? REALLY?! WEAK! I read the whole book and it left me angry.

Good Read

I enjoyed this because the Coast Guard is too often treated like a military step child or even bastard. The work done by it’s men and women are equally as important as the other branches. So to read about a hero from this branch was great. I would have liked to see a bit more action. I loved officer Garcia’s character by the way.

As our world ends

I really loved this book. This is the first book of Jack Hunt I have read. I am looking forward to the next two books in the series which have already downloaded. I am looking forward to continuing the adventures of Alex and Sophie. I think Mr. Hunt is going to be one of my favorite. Authors.

Great characters unique plot

So many of the entries in this genre are formulatic, but not this one! Jack Hunt creates a complex yet believable situation, characters that are not perfectly ready, with the typical problems of modern life trailing along with them. The theme of redemption is already strong and I can't wait to read book number two!!

Good story, well written

The only reason I don’t give 5 stars is because I don’t like to read the “f” bombs. I realize there weren’t many so am appreciative of that. The storyline is very interesting and not the typical EMP disaster. A unique book. I recommend it to anyone who likes apocalyptic stories but looks for something different!

It’s not horrible, but it takes soooooo long to get started. Characters are basically uninteresting and the “big plot reveal” is treated like the character forgot to take out the garbage. It was free for me, though Prime reading, but it didn’t grab me enough to purchase any sequels. If you’re looking for a good post apocalyptic story, keep looking

Great Twist

Very good read and can't wait to start the season one book. I think the way this multiprocessor regarding the cause of the apocalyptic event was very good and well written into the storyline

Another fine book from Jack Hunt !!

I wasn't sure I was going to like a cyber apocalypse story, but I trust that if it could be done well, Jack Hunt would be the one to do it. I could go on about the things I liked, but why not just read it yourself?

Excellent

I like reading apocalyptic fiction, but sometimes, it gets repetitive. That's not the case with this book. The characters are believable and interesting. The trouble they get into believable. Can't wait to read book 2.

Terrific book.

The characters just suck you in immediately and the pace and action just keep ramping up. I seldom purchase series that I read on Kindle, but I have a feeling this will be another purchase to add to my "keeper shelf". Highly recommended.
