'COME FROM AWAY: WELCOME TO THE ROCK' - a fully illustrated companion volume to the hit Tony Award-winning Broadway musical. 'COME FROM AWAY: WELCOME TO THE ROCK' tells the remarkable true story of 38 planes and 6,579 passengers that were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001, doubling the population of one small town on the edge of the world. The people of Newfoundland opened their arms to the displaced, offering food, shelter, and friendship over the course of five days, and the travelers never forgot their heartfelt generosity. 'COME FROM AWAY: WELCOME TO THE ROCK' is the ultimate companion piece to the Tony Award-winning hit musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein.
Featuring Irene Sankoff and David Hein's complete book, music, and lyrics for the first time in print, exclusive photos and illustrations of the cast, up-close details of the costumes and set, and new interviews from passengers, Gander residents, and the actors that lined up to audition to portray them, and much more, 'COME FROM AWAY: WELCOME TO THE ROCK' gives an unprecedented look behind the curtain. With a narrative by theater historian Laurence Maslon, the journey of the musical's development is traced from the backdrop of one of the darkest days in American history to the ten-year reunion of Gander residents and airline passengers, which sparked the show's creation. A beautiful collector's item, this book places readers far and wide in the town of Gander and backstage at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre - and all the places along this show's incredible journey. Because we come from everywhere, we all come from away.
4.5 stars Come From Away: Welcome to the Rock gives an inside look at the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical COME FROM AWAY. This large hardcover book tells how the musical was developed and includes the lyrics and lots of photos, and side notes.
On September 11, 2001, 38 planes and 6579 passengers were forced to land in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland. The local residents welcomed the displaced visitors, offering food, shelter and friendship. In the days that followed cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into acceptance and trust, and music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. Ten years after this memorable and challenging week, there was a reunion of residents and airline passengers in Gander.
I listened to the musical Come from Away several times while reading this book. I want to listen again and again. I would love to see the musical performance on stage!
If you're a fan of the music and the story behind this totally fabulous hit musical, then you won't want to miss the chance to read about the development of the show. Inside are photographs and interviews with the community of Gander people who hosted the "come from always" or "plane people" on September 11, 2001. In a matter of hours after the US airspace was closed due to the terrorist attacks, 38 planes landed in Gander, Newfoundland, with a total of 6,595 strangers from all over the world. In addition to a full set of lyrics, there are the cut scenes and historical background of the island and surrounding towns as well as a narrative of actual events that took place there. The Gander people stepped up and took in these plane loads of men, women, and children -- they fed them, housed them and gave everything they had to their welfare while also providing emotional support during this horrific time. The last plane departed Gander on Sunday, September 16, 2001 and nothing for any of them would ever be the same.
This is a fabulous, uplifting and also heartbreaking story of what it means to be selfless and giving. All I could think as I closed the last page was that I wanted to be "an Islander" too. If you get an opportunity to see this musical, please don't pass. It's up there in my top 5 now. The book was well done and provided me with what I always crave -- more details, facts, information.
I got this from my local library and highly recommend it.
What a delightful book! Earlier this year, I saw the Broadway musical Come From Away, and the music and story grabbed a part of my heart. When I saw this advance copy that intertwines the story of the land and the people of Newfoundland with the lyrics to the musical, I was sold and definitely not disappointed. I learned so much about the geography of the land, the history of Gander's airport, and the events that led up to this small island taking in so many people from the grounded planes on 9/11/2001. Intertwined with all of this is the story of David Hein and Irene Sankhoff and their creation of the musical--starting with interviews and leading up to how they got the musical into production.
Within the lyrics/lines of the musical are various notes about why certain lines and incidents were highlighted by the writers and the choices for certain decisions they made, which made it so much more meaningful to me. They also talk about the parts that were cut and some of them are even included. It is almost like sitting down with the writers and going through the entire thing with them, what a fun and enlightening treat. I pulled up the soundtrack on Apple Music and listened along while reading which made for an amazing experience with the book.
The book also does profiles of the real people from Gander, as well as shows photographs taken during the events of 2001. These all give a face to the story, the people behind the actors, the people who make Gander the town that it is--a caring amazing place.
I cried when I saw the musical. I cried when I read the book. But they are tears of joy at the spirit of human kindness. It is an inspiration to all of us. The 18th anniversary of 9/11 is two days away as I write this review. The actions of those in Gander are now being watched and appreciated all over, and hopefully that inspiration will encourage all of us to show kindness and care to others as we are immensely grateful for what we have.
I joyfully and voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
The musical and its soundtrack are absolutely 5-stars! Experience them as soon as you can! This book is a nice souvenir to be experienced after if, like me, you just want to squeeze a little more out of the musical.
A fine but brief look at the real people behind the events that occurred in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, on 9/11 and the days after, this book focuses largely on the creation of the Broadway musical years later, and it includes all the actor's lines and lyrics from the show. But it is all interspersed in a way that for me detracts from the power of the components. I'd recommend skipping through and reading the book and lyrics first, preferably while listening to the soundtrack, before tackling all the side material crammed in between scenes.
The production of the book itself is flawed with needless repetition, typos, and at least one real person's name, Werner Baldessarini, prominently misspelled throughout, raising tiny doubts about the factual accuracy of the rest. And while "reporter" Jim DeFede is mentioned a couple times, it seems dubious to not mention his 2002 book, The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland, which obviously played some part in the genesis of this production.
An insightful look into the musical. I loved learning more about the true stories behind its creation as well as the events that inspired the play itself. I can't say there was anything that particularly moved me though.
If you’ve seen Come From Away, you know that your first instincts after the final curtain drops are to 1) learn all of the words and 2) find out everything you possibly can about this amazing story.
This book allows you to easily do both. I’ve read two other books in a similar style, ones that include the full musical book as well as some behind the scenes articles and beautiful pictures. But the unique thing about this book is that it’s more than just the story of how the musical made it to Broadway. Yes, you get that story and it’s great and could be turned into its own musical, but this book goes beyond that. You don’t need to be well-versed in musical lingo, stars, and theaters to be fascinated by the bonus content in this book. It includes funny anecdotes, bonus miracles that didn’t make the final cut of the show, and - my favorite - profiles of the real-life people of Gander.
Come From Away is my favorite musical, and though the fact that I can’t watch it 24/7 still breaks my heart, this book is a pretty good substitute.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me an advanced copy via NetGalley.
Any true fan of musicals will love this companion piece to the "Come From Away" show. Along with the complete book and lyrics of the musical, they've included tons of interesting side notes of how the play came into development (and the history of how it went from a small regional theater piece to a Tony award-winning hit). I especially loved the inclusion of lines and songs that were actually cut from the finished product. Because "Come From Away" is based on a true story, it was also super helpful to have the real historical events described in this book as well (with interviews directly from the people who were there). I learned so much about the real people of Gander and how they worked to become the ultimate hosts and caretakers of thousands of stranded airplane passengers on 9/11. I would absolutely recommend this book to Broadway lovers, as well as anyone who has seen and fallen in love with this beautiful show.
I first came across the music for Come From Away, while listening to the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Network). It was so lively, so singable, I sought out the album, and much like I did with Andrew Lloyd Webers Cats, many years ago, I listened over and over again.
You would think that a story about what happened during the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001 would be depressing, and not something to enjoy, but the show, which is about the 38 planes that hand to land in Newfoundland, Canada, when the American airspace closed, is a story of people helping others. Of people reaching out, and making thousands of people feel at home.
And the most amazing part of this whole story, which is revealed in this companion book, is how much of it was not just based on what happened, but is well researched enough that the people it was based on approved of how they were portrayed.
The authors did years of research on what happened that week, in Gander, and this book not only documents how they went about it, but also gives stories that did not make it into the musical, which were just as fantastic.
This book is full of pictures, and quotes, and footnotes galore.
If you have seen this musical, this is a must have.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
4.5 stars. For the past 35 years, I've seen 100s of Broadway productions, and Come From Away was one of the most memorable of them. I literally laughed and cried through the entire show, and I've listened to the album and watched a bootlegged recording (not recorded by me, I should clarify) of the Broadway production many times. And it really has the same powerful and uplifting impact every time.
This "behind the scenes" book of the musical was very interesting in the way that all such books are interesting to me as a former theatre professional, and a lifelong lover of musicals. But Come From Away is different in a notable way. Sure, technically, Hamilton is about real people and history, but here the history is recent. The people aren't famous, and they're still alive.
I listened to the audiobook, and it was fantastic to see photos (in the extensive accompanying PDF) and hear the actual voices of the real people portrayed right alongside the actors portraying them. This isn't a super in-depth work, but it's an absolutely fantastic resource for fans who want to dig a bit deeper into the show, or want to learn about the real people --absolute heroes--portrayed. So glad I stumbled upon this!
4.5* the musical is 3848383 stars, one of my fave things in the whole world. but this book felt slightly rushed, with wayyy too many typos! love getting to read all the cut lyrics and scenes. its truly such a perfect show.
This is a beautiful collection of stories and how they became such a moving musical. I loved learning all the fun facts for the songs and the deleted scenes. I also love how many of the lyrics to the songs are quotes from the Newfoundlanders and come-from-aways that were interviewed.
Musicals are so special. I think a lot of people disregard them, because they may seem silly or ridiculous, and no one in real life just bursts into song. But what they don't realise is that musicals are such a unique form of art that they cannot be replicated anywhere else. There is no other medium that you can choose to get the same experience. And they can be about anything! And they can be any kind of music! Broadway is definitely becoming more popular in recent years due to shows like Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen, and for that I am extraordinarily glad because it is high time that musicals get the worldly recognition that they deserve.
Come From Away shouldn't work. It's a musical about 9/11, for crying out loud. It absolutely should not have been approached. But it WAS. And it's BEAUTIFUL. Irene Sankhoff and David Hein have done something magical and profound. They have done something that is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to do. They have captured the very essence of human decency and kindness, and put it on stage in one of the greatest musicals we have ever seen. You can only appreciate a musical so much as a soundtrack - because so much of the artistry is found in the movements, the choreography, the blocking of the physical show. Having only listened to the cast recording, there was so much I didn't know about how the show was actually staged, and reading this book not only tells me that, but also tells the story of why specific movements are made, how those movements came to be, and how, at its very core, this show is about helping people. Just helping. Because that's what you do.
I can't even imagine what kind of journey it must have been to interview all those people in Gander for those few days, people who were actually involved in the events that happened there. The book talks a lot about how intense and worrisome it is to play a character on stage whose inspiration is not only still alive, but can actually come and see it. It must be absolutely nerve-wracking. I could have never done it. But that's the beauty of this show. So much of it is built upon these actual experiences of these actual people. It's not just based on a true story, it IS a true story. And the world now remembers it.
Structurally, I really like how this book is laid out. Several other books about Broadway shows similar to this one separate the libretto and the stories behind the scenes, but this one blends them together so that when you hear about a specific background piece, you can immediately see it reflected in the script, which is really lovely. I think what is also special about this book is that it goes much deeper than just telling how the musical came to be. I think because the process of creating it went much deeper than research usually does. And part of that is the nature of the subject matter they are working on - but most of it is because Sankhoff and Hein have so much passion and honour and respect for those they are writing about. You don't see that in every musical in its creation. Come From Away is truly so special, and this book tells you exactly why, detail by detail and piece by piece. It is magical, and wonderful, and I can't wait to have a physical copy in my hands.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars After seeing the musical Come From Away, a friend lent me this book. It not only had the lines from the show, but also the background of the making of the show and more of the lives of the people portrayed. I enjoyed the show immensely, so the fuller picture was icing on the top. This rendering of the hospitality of the generous people of Gander and the surrounding communities to the stranded 7,000 passengers who were downed on 9/11 is heartwarming. It renews your faith in the giving nature of humanity. I didn’t agree with the comparison of those who gave unconditionally to the stranded passengers with the idea that Americans should indiscriminately allow all immigrants in with open arms. Didn’t 9/11 just prove that there are those who greatly wish our nation harm? It would be refreshing to leave biased politics out of a book such as this, as kindness to strangers is universal and definitely not politically based. Somehow this need to include something that would actually divide readers is counterproductive to the message contained in this beautiful story. However this is just a small, unnecessary blurb at the end.
If you are feeling particularly hopeless this week I sincerely recommend this joyful story. While you might assume a 9/11 musical would be a bit of downer you would be dead wrong. I lost count of how many times this play made me belly laugh. It perfectly blends deeply sorrowful moments along with joyful jigs capturing the human spirit. This truly shows the best of humanity and highlights a story of universal kindness. This book adds some background story of how the play was developed and adds some helpful context on the personal stories that inspired this tale. I think this could be read before or alongside or after seeing the play. Highly, highly recommend going to see the show or look up the recorded version which is streaming. I think we could all use a little Gander kindness in this moment 🤍
This book is a fantastic companion to a fantastic show. I grew up in NYC and was there on 9/11. Since then I've actively avoided all shows, books, movies etc. about that day until Come From Away. I saw it with my father last fall & we both loved it. This book made me love the show even more now that I know the care that went into telling everyone's stories. I enjoyed reading all the anecdotes provided by the show's writers, cast members and their real-life counterparts, particularly the notes within the lyrics showing how Come From Away evolved into the show I saw on Broadway. Thank you to everyone who was involved with the show & book for showing us that something beautiful can come out of something so dark.
These gift books about Broadway musicals can be a mixed bag. Some can be so fawning that the subject show can't meet the expectation. But Come From Away is probably my favorite musical experience of the last ten years, and this book is more than a glossy picture book.
Each chapter includes information about the September, 2001 events in Newfoundland that inspired show, information about development of the show, and then the annotated script of the show itself. It describes the people who inspired the show's characters and their reactions to experiencing the show itself. It's not a substitute for the show itself, although if you combined a reading with listening to the soundtrack, you'd be in the neighborhood. This had me itching to see the show again. I hope theaters will be able to re-open soon.
An excellent companion to an excellent musical. This book ended all too soon and I wish it had been longer if only to include more of the details recorded by David and Irene. A must-have for any fans of the musical Com From Away and for Newfoundlanders to have on their bookshelf.
Very much enjoyed this telling of how the musical came to be, how the songs came to be, and another glimpse at the people and their stories who either lived in Gander or arrived in Gander on 9/11. Love the Broadway musical and hope to see it again soon.
This is such a wonderful look at how the musical developed! I loved seeing actors side by side with the people they portrayed. I also had a lot of fun listening to the soundtrack while I read along with the lyrics. Reading this made me want to go see the show again.
Every once in a while, I hear a soundtrack to a musical and I love it before I even see it. This is one of those times. And this book is a great companion to listening. One day I will get there....
I love musicals and I love books. I especially love learning about the process behind musicals and this one is an especially breathtaking story. I loved getting to see the original stories and people behind the show and hearing from their own voices. What a cool look into how musicals are made.
If you could not tell, I found the musicals section of the library and spent some time there…yes I plan to go back (PS I am entering these books now because I WILL complete my book challenge in the next 5 days)
I bought this lovely book when we saw the musical at the Hobby Center last Saturday, but it's taken me a while to read it. At first glance, it seems like a nice collection of photos from the show and a breakdown of the script, but in reality, it, much like the musical itself, is MUCH more.
Not only does it have the entire script with lyrics to all the songs, it also has several "cuts" or songs and things that didn't make it in the show. Plus (and this is the best part), there are loads of notations all through the script with little bits of insight into why things were in the show, where the info came from, or why things were changed along the way.
But the best part of this book has to be the background look into Gander and the people. If you aren't familiar with the story - Come From Away is based on the events of 9/11 when 38 airplanes that had been destined for US airports were diverted instead to the lonely little town of Gander in Newfoundland. Thousands of people were stranded there (and in other places around Canada and the rest of the world) for several days, and the people of Gander and the surrounding small towns really took the visitors into their homes and hearts and did all they could to help them through those terrible days.
I first became familiar with this story back in 2020 when I read the book: The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede with my Book Club that year. It was a wonderful story, full of fabulous people - both the people of Gander and the stranded passengers.
When we realized there was a musical based on the story we immediately began looking for an opportunity to see it, which finally came for us this year. I bought the book about the musical on a whim, without knowing anything about it, but just because it's kind of what I do - I "buy the book" when I can. Sometimes that is a mistake. In this case, it was a great idea.
However, I do need to let you know - I was planning to give this book five stars until I got to the last chapter. I realize that theater people tend to be liberal in their politics, and I expect that to a certain extent, but the last chapter really irked me with a political spiel and a very biased take on some things that could have been much better left unsaid - so I'm taking off one star for that.
I also want to let you know that the play itself has a bit of language and some content that might not be suitable for children, so be warned about that if you decide to go see it yourself. Still, the musical overall was a true delight - lovely music, wonderful staging, amazing actors - it was really well done and very funny, while still being a moving experience worthy of the topic. I do recommend it for adults, and I also recommend the book. I think you'll love them both.
I was 30 years old, with three little boys when 9-11 happened. I remember hearing the news as I got my oldest off to kindergarten. My baby, just turned one, took his first steps that day. I've learned more about the day from various books ... The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11, 102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers, The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland ... that last one must have triggered some Facebook advertisement algorithm, because an ad for "Come From Away" the musical appeared in my feed. This was mid-2023, and I mentioned it to Hubs (it was touring and would be in our city the following year) ... and he bought us tickets. May2024, we went to see the show. It was great. A filmed version of the Broadway production was also available on AppleTV, so I watched it in the comfort of my home, with subtitles, to catch every word. I don't remember how I stumbled upon this book, but I went ahead and ordered it. I'm generally a digi gal, ebooks and audio, and this took me a bit to get through, but it was a unique read.
Here, we get additional history of Gander, the airport, and events that day. Then ... there's the script of the show, word for word. There were added notes, with more information about this or that, little tidbits that were so fun and interesting. Lots of pictures. More additional info, on the authors, how they got the idea for the show, the funding the first steps of the writing, then production. Interspersed, more pictures, and more of the script, with notes and additions.
Even just a copy of the script would have been interesting ... to read it, and remember the music and the scenes. But all the background information, and new insights, asides ... just made something that was already very personal, even more intimate and connected. I especially loved the stories of the real people, meeting the actors playing them, lots of compelling stuff there.
This definitely has a target audience ... you have to have seen the show, liked the show, to appreciate this book. But it will have a special spot on my bookshelf now.
I was privileged to see Come From Away in its Los Angeles tour stop. Knowing it was a landmark musical and having missed it in other areas, I traveled there to see it. Why? I knew very little about the show except that it had won multiple awards. I am a musical theater fanatic, so I only knew I had to see it. But the show, the tale of the townsfolk of Gander, Newfoundland, and the grounded passengers on thirty-eight planes on 9/11 is more than a musical. It is a loving tribute to these Newfoundlanders and the Come-from-aways they treated with kindness, joy, and love. So, having seen and loved the show, this book Come From Away: Welcome to the Rock…An Inside Look at the Hit Musical, written by Laurence Maslon with commentary from the show’s authors Irene Sankoff and David Hein was immediately put on my list to read. I’ve read many, many “making of” books that tell of the development of staging of various hit musicals. But this book is so much more, for it tells the entire background story of not only how the authors came to write the show but of the incredible people of Newfoundland they interviewed and set upon the stage. Filled with photos and stories, the book is a must-have addition to the show. Sankoff and Hein’s lyrics for each song are reproduced with comments from them informing us of their choices and why they made them. The day-by-day tales of the actual experience when ordinary folks embraced a group of travelers and airline personnel that totaled two-thirds of their population and who were diverse in race and beliefs are not only interesting but oh, so heartwarming. I felt myself welling-up continually as I read of the kindness of these strangers whose only motivation was to make their guests, put there in extraordinary circumstances, feel welcome and safe. Likewise, the profiles of the Newfoundlanders coupled with the actors who portray them onstage are a wonder, especially for an actor/director as I am. Rarely—as stated in the book—do actors get to meet the actual people they portray. Not only did the company members—as did the various touring company members—get to meet these people, but they became friends who stay in touch. Just as the Newfoundlanders found themselves fast friends with some of their guests, they now embrace the Come From Away company members. Come from Away is an amazing show that should be seen and taken to heart by everyone. This book just enhances that experience a hundred-fold.
On September 11, 2001, four planes carried out an assault on the United States. Immediately all airspace in the US was closed. Airplanes that were enroute to locations within the states were diverted to other countries. The airport in Gander, Newfoundland, received 38 planes. The town itself had fewer than 10,000 residents. The planes carried a total of 6,579 people. No one knew when the planes would be able to leave or were they would be going. But all the people were housed, fed, clothed, and much more.
Irene Sankoff and David Hein, two Canadian playwrights, were intrigued by the stories and went to the ten-year anniversary get together in Gandor. From the people they met there and their stories, they wrote musical COME FROM AWAY. It tells of those planes, passengers, crew, and the residents of Gander and some surrounding towns during the five days of the emergency.
The play garnered several Tony nominations, winning one. While it was not named the best musical of the year, it is the best play I have seen in more than a decade. When the audiences refused to leave after the house lights went on, continuing to applaud and cheer until the orchestra had left the stage, I knew I wasn’t the only one who felt that way.
COME FROM AWAY: AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE HIT MUSICAL is an annotated exploration of the musical from its development to success on stage. It provides a complete script along with side notes and parts that were cut. A lot of copy is devoted to the back stories as well as the actual people who were involved in Gander that fateful week and concludes with an update on many of the people who are portrayed in the production.
COME FROM AWAY is very well-written, engrossing, uplifting, story of people meeting a crisis and rising to absorb and conquer it. It includes ups, downs, and lots of humor. It’s first person history of an event that touched almost everyone in the US on 9/11, an event that still affects us and our country. If you haven’t seen the play yet, the book will provide a lot of background that will explain some of the things delivered on stage. If you have seen it, it will add a lot to your understanding of those momentous days.
