Ify? Yep. At times I found Lorena quite childish. Also, I was not a fan of how the mountain people spoke. It made them seem unintelligent and I just don't view people from a region in that way. Rubbed me wrong. Maybe if one or 2 spoke that way, sure could be a little funny. But everyone mountain person spoke that way.
The romance was not there for me. Not interested in any particular MC. Just did not click with me.
The book has a great start and then goes downhill quickly. The plot is ridiculous. The protagonist is a 19 year old woman who suddenly starts acting and speaking like she’s 12, which makes the sex-themed storyline kind of cringe-worthy. My head spun every time she said, “Dude!” It’s a short book that took me over a week to finish because I didn’t want to pick it up. Hard pass on the next 44 (!!!!!) of the series.
I was expecting a reverse harem but this definitely wasn’t it. Alan is in love with Dimitri. So he’s out. Dimitri kind of gets on Lorena’s nerves. So that leaves Wei. She likes one guy. She dated the other 2 trying to get to know them. This series isn’t for me.
I never really like to rate books this low. I swear I really try to be nice it takes work to write a story. I just could not get into this. I’m pretty sure this is the 1st book I did not finish. The main character is very childish and is expected to have a child herself just scares me. This is all I’m going to post on this again sorry. But I hope your other books get better.
Well damn.. that was a unexpected good read! I seriously enjoy it and couldn't get enough of it since it's 3:45 AM and I getting ready to jump into book 2... To hell with work tomorrow I'll just get a energy drink to get me through the day.. Seriously this storyline is good.. FYI this is not a RH Romance!
First of all I thought this was going to be for adults. However, it is not. Besides that the book was boring enough to skip pages at a time and not really lose anything.
The main character was immature. The dialogue was similar to a spoiled twelve year old. And the story made no sense at all. A trilogy of forty books? No thank you.
Books like this make me think that maybe I too could write books and it would still be better than whatever the heck I just read. Will never be swayed by a kindle cover ad again.
But I'm hoping it will Improve. That whole escape was a little too easy. And I'm hoping her personality will soften just a bit. Heroines don't have to be jaded and cynical.
So I went into this book thinking this was going to be a RH book, and after reading it, I’m still not sure if this series is going to end up being RH, it’s certainly set up to be that way but doesn’t seem to be evolving into it. So the gist of this book is that Lorena’s grandmother dies and in order to get the inheritance from a woman she doesn’t know, she agrees to move into her grandmothers house for six months. As it turns out she’s a witch, and a prophecy that she will be the one to bring magic back into the world, by having a child with one of four vampires. That’s basically the gist. As a character, Lorena is fine. I don’t love her, I don’t hate her. I get her desire not to have her life ruled by a prophecy. I also appreciate her desire to learn about who she is and about magic. I also appreciate that she agrees to get to know her options. Out of all the characters in the book she’s probably my second favorite. The guys are... interesting I suppose. Alan is not my type at all. He’s super arrogant, or maybe full of himself would be a better way to put it. He’s also described as a pretty boy, and mostly just throws his money around. Dmitri is more complex, an artist, and he and Lorena actually have something to talk about. I like the way they are together. That being said he has kind of an irrational anger issue, and he kinda makes everything about him, which is very annoying. Now Wei, now that’s my guy. He’s stoic, a warrior, and comes off as standoffish and protective. But he listens to Lorena. He teaches her when she asks. He is the guy who can hold her when she needs to fall apart, but then be the guy in the next breath who teaches her how to defend herself. My vote is for him. I really did have mixed feelings about this book. Concept was good. I liked some of the characters. But I felt like it could have been fleshed out a lot more and it would have been better. I’ll probably read the next book because I want to know what happens with Wei, everyone else I could take or leave.
1. The description says it’s a trilogy... last I checked 7 is not a trilogy. 2. It says it’s a RH.... it’s a choose which one you want out of several men 3. The MC says she is willing to go on a date with each, but you only get to see one ‘meh’ date 4. The characters are flat, the storyline is mediocre. It’s supposed to be all about her magic, but it isn’t explained very well. The MC is constantly treated like she should know everything and I feel like the author looks at us like all the other characters look at the MC.
DNF. I tried very hard but it was so immature and awkward. Luckily I had Amazon KU and I didn’t have to pay for this, because if I had I would’ve been a bit upset.
I have mixed feelings. On one hand, the story idea she's set up in book 1 is interesting enough for me to look into book 2, but on the other hand.. the style if writing needs more refining. I -HATE- how much she uses the word "dude" and the overall teenage responses the main char gives, makes me cringe. Perhaps the fluidity will evolve with future novels..? Stay tuned, I'll keep you posted!
I'm so annoyed every time that a review doesn't save. So this is going to be the short version. Because I am annoyed. And also in a different order because I think it'll work better this way. The book ends on a cliffhanger, which isn't a problem. I like cliffhangers. The problem is that it ended on a cliffhanger, and a rather dramatic one, and I was just disappointed at the end. The reason for this, I believe, is that there was a severe pacing issue with this book. It didn't feel like it got going until the end. There was very little build up to the climax. I was just settling into the book and then it ended. And it's not like I'm not interested in the characters. I am. I don't love any of them, but, again, I was just settling in. I was feeling a lot of affection for them. I don't need a ten landing. I'm happy with a seven. A little bit of a stumble, and I'll forgive it. But I need to feel like I can trust the author at the end of the book. Bear with me here. I'm still waiting for Winds of Winter, even though at this point I'm pretty sure it's stupid to do, because of the end of AGoT. It's grim dark fantasy, and kind of more or less depressing. And it's not like the ending is any better. But the ending feels like GRRM saying "I've got you. You can trust me." And I do. And it's stupid. Another grim dark fantasy I read at about the same time as AGoT, which won't be named because I'm not here to lambast it, was just as depressing. The ending, however, completely soured me to reading any of the others in the series even though there was so much I liked about the book. And a decade or so later, when I see that book, I mentally curl my lip. And another one, grim dark fantasy as well, read at the same time, The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks, had a lot going for it. And it ended I'm such a way that I actually read the second book. I didn't like that one as well, but it ended so that I felt safe to keep reading. I actually need to reread it now that I have the third one. And it also made me a fan of Weeks, which made me happy to turn to a different series of his. This isn't a grim dark fantasy. But this book also isn't a traditionally depressing genre. The point here is that if a book that is just generally depressing can still make me feel hopeful and emotionally safe (if a little bruised), I can expect that from books that are not. And this book didn't hug me and make me feel safe. The other problem is that I feel uncomfortable with preaching of any kind, which is a separate problem since I am in fact religious. (Also why I don't usually read religious books because no thanks). And this book was preachy regarding LGBTQ+. Now, I did just say that I'm religious so I know the assumption that is about to be made. But bear with me. The problem is that the main character, whose name starts with an L, spends a lot of time telling the reader how fine she is with all of it. She spends so much time that it makes me feel like she thinks there is a problem. Because you don't spend that much time and energy defending something unless you know that there's a problem. And I pretty much make a career out of defending problematic characters and people. After The Force Awakens came out, I wrote a ten page apology (in the traditional sense) of why Kylo Ren was actually a good guy. He kills Han in The Force Awakens. Han is my favorite character. Would I have put that much energy into defending him if I wasn't aware that he was a problem? No. That's why I don't defend Leia. She's not a problem. The other problem with it is the frequency with which L girl makes the comments. The more often an author brings something up, the more important it is. And it was all telling, for the most part. Avoiding any real details, there's a conversation in the club. And it was sweet and emotional and so supportive. And it was SHOWING us what L girl had been telling us. That was honestly one of my favorite scenes in the entire book. We got some real character depth and relationship development and I am still just so absolutely here for it. The author did well on that scene. No preaching. Just two characters having a conversation that pulled at my black little heart strings. The foreshadowing wasn't super great. But because of the preaching thing going on, I wasn't as absorbed as I could have been, so it didn't bother me as much as it does with other books where either things are foreshadowed with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, or not foreshadowed at all and just come out of nowhere. The case here was more lack of than it was sledgehammer. I did actually enjoy the book. I know it doesn't sound like it, but I did. The author did a really good job with the characters. I genuinely liked all of them (except for the bad guys, eff those guys). And because I like all of them, with what happens at the end, I do genuinely want to know how they're going to react to things. Like Jenny. What is going to be her response to that insanity. And the boys. The dynamic is going to change wildly and I really want to know how they're going to deal with it. And obviously I want to know how that cliffhanger is going to be resolved. But I was still disappointed. Now, this part was not included in the original review, but my feelings have adjusted a little in the hours since finishing the book and writing the first review. I'm probably going to read the second one. I'll give the author one more chance on the ending for me to trust going forward. Because sometimes the second book is better. I read a book this summer where I didn't particularly like the first book, but since I had to read to the third one, I kept going. And I'm glad I did because the third one was just so good. But because I'm going to be holding it at an emotional distance, I might not rate any of them higher than four stars.
I really enjoyed this book. I got it hoping it was Rh because it wasn’t clear if it was or not. I’m leaning towards not but I enjoyed the story and I’m about to start the next book.
FMC is suppose to be 19, talks and acts like she is 13, set up appears to be RH, reviews and blurbs had 4 guys, but Alan, Wei and Dmitri are the only ones introduced, and of that 3 not one are really an option cuz we don’t know much about them. But there is only 44 more books to go…yeah hard pass…
Just want a quickie book for in between long reads. This is the book for that. Vampires, witches, and crazies. Also, some eye candy that makes for a Goodreads. Yummy!
I stg if she said “dude” one more time I was going to scream. Otherwise, not good but not terrible. I might continue the series but not if every book is just like this one.
This is supposed to be some sort of spicy romance, but it was neither of those things. Not enough interaction with the vampires for any sort of relationship development, and the one who starts off as the possibly obvious choice apparently quickly becomes too irritable even though we never see the change/get to know him enough to see that. This isn’t really an adult fantasy romance… this is a 19 year old who says “completely,” “pretty much,” and “dude” wayyyy too much and does absolutely nothing to develop any romance with the 3 (really 2, not the alleged 4) possible suitors that she has very little in common with. I finished it, and might possibly read the next one because it ended right in the middle of a scene, but also… I don’t think I really want to…
DNF for me, the FMC is written in a very immature almost childish way. There is also pretty irrelevant info dumps that really drags the story down. Moving along now.
3.5 ⭐️ Um okay so that was interesting. The harem is all over the place and then it’s not cause it’s obvious on who she will pick to be her baby daddy. I like the diversity of the men but they’re sometimes very annoying. The cult was lame but I want to see how their revenge develops. Idk we shall see if the second book is better or not.
