Respect: Understanding Caribbean British Christianity

Rate this book
The author investigates the context of Caribbean British Christianity through the prism of their ethnicity and their faith. Christians from the Caribbean have settled in Britain since the late 1940s. In spite of high levels of rejection and misunderstanding they have shaped a new British identity which is dynamic, empowering and challenging. The author argues that this no longer majors in the victim-based dialectic of oppression/ liberation. It is an unapologetic and prophetic identity which seeks to be respected and understood.

Such a book to make you think! That Caribbean brothers and sisters include not just African, but Indian, European influences. That Caribbean British Christianity is not just defined by slavery and liberation from slavery, but from being powerfully aware of their creation in the image of God, of choosing to come to the 'Mother Country' and to create, and create respect as a prophetic and variety of denominational, Bible and Jesus focused presences. That we should acknowledge African, Caribbean and more contributions in creating the UK to its present moment. That maybe we focus on outward race and ethnicity too much when culture, denomination, being made in the image of God come into this so much more. Cliche, I know, but tho a PhD thesis, I had have my eyes and my heart opened, and as a MC white person, truly blessed by my brother's writings, especially the incarnational theology chapter. So beautiful and powerful to read. Everyone should get their hands on a copy of this book :)
