Welcome to the Agrihood: Living, Shopping, and Gardening for a Farm-to-Table Lifestyle

Rate this book
Welcome to the Agrihood, Living, Shopping, and Gardening for a Farm-to-Table Lifestyle, has something for everyone—new homebuyers, city-dwellers, and retirees. Award-winning author Anna DeSimone explains all the ways that sustainably sourced, locally grown food is healthier, preserves farmland, and lowers your carbon footprint.

LIVE IN AGRIHOOD, an eco-friendly, healthy-lifestyle community centered around a professionally managed farm. Discover why agrihoods are winning awards across the nation for "best places to live." You can have a beautiful, sustainably built home with the latest energy conservation features, and yet be surrounded by pastoral landscapes and natural habitat. This book takes you through a virtual tour of agrihoods, known for amenities such as charter K-12 schools, clubhouses, fitness centers, boating, golf, horseback riding, swimming, walking, hiking, and biking trails. Best of all, many are surprisingly close to major cities and metro areas.

ORGANIC ROOFTOP FARMS are the newest trend in multifamily housing, where tenants can take the elevator to shop for fresh food, or perhaps dine at the on-site café where meals are prepared with food from the chef's garden. Many apartment complexes are incorporating community gardens into the landscape or offering individual raised-bed gardens for tenants to grow their own produce.

GROW YOUR OWN ORGANIC FOOD on your porch, balcony, or in your backyard with helpful tips, planting guides, and valuable resources about sustainable, chemical-free, and environmentally friendly growing methods. This book teaches the basics of organic certification, food safety, biodiversity, beekeeping, soil testing, composting, and local laws. With infographics and clear commentary, readers will understand how sustainable agriculture helps the environment, and how far food travels. You might be inspired to start planting microgreens indoors after learning about aeroponics, hydroponics, and aquaponics.

SHOP FROM THE FARMER YOU KNOW and learn the story behind your food. This book illustrates the "harvest season," and describes the scope of food products and pick-your-own options at "on-farm" markets. You'll learn about "food hubs," mission-based organizations dedicated to sustainable agriculture, fair trade, social, and environmental causes. Food hubs bring together local farmers, fisheries, ranchers, and artisans. By enrolling in a season-long "farm share" program known as "Community-Supported Agriculture" your family can enjoy fresh, healthy food and connect with the people who plant, manage and harvest your food.

Contents:
•The Local Food Sensation
•Say Hello to Your Farmer
•Urban Agriculture

I recently won this book on the Goodreads book giveaway. I love all books food, garden, and farm related so I was very excited for the opportunity to read this one.

The book lives up to it's title by educating the reader on all the ways that a person can live a farm to table lifestyle. It explains newer concepts such as agrihood communities, community supported agriculture (CSA), and food hubs. The book also walks the reader through examples of food labeling, plant hardiness zone maps, and planting schedule. The second half of the book is a list of all the available agrihood communities, CSA programs, on farm markets, and food hubs all listed state by state.

What I liked about this book is that it is the perfect book for someone who wants to start eating in a farm to table way but is unsure of how to do that. It is an easy read with simple to understand graphs and charts. It breaks down all of the available options in a way that is more apt to encourage someone on this quest that this is doable instead of discouraging them with complicated information.

What I don't like about the book is that is it a one time read, I don't personally see it as a book that I will reference often. Although I like the state by state list that the whole second part of the book is dedicated to it is all information that is subject to change often which would leave half of this book obsolete in the future. I also would have liked to see planting schedules for all the the hardiness zones in the country instead of just an example of a zone 6 schedule. That last note is because the book is tailored to a reader who a novice on the farm to table concept and I think all 7 schedules would have been a great non-changing reference for most readers.

All in all I enjoyed reading it and look forward to sharing it with others who are looking to change how they get their food.

This is a good resource if you're making decisions about sustainable living communities. Really more of a skim than a read because if you're not planning on moving to California reading a list of the farmer's markets there is really not applicable.

I was disappointed this book didn't contain anything critical about the marketing of farm-to-table, the segregated system of land ownership (there were several cringey mentions of "heritage" farmland in the south!) or say anything about farm labor. Our food system is built on the backs of an exploited class and it gets not one mention. It seems even the purest foodies care only about the food itself and not about the labor that brought it to you. Huge missed opportunity as I do think many smaller farms do a better (far from perfect) job of respecting farm workers.

This book has something for everyone....from the home gardener to the farmer....everyone who works so hard to produce quality food for eating, cooking, planting, and selling. Across America food can be more affordable and available through many sources listed in this book. Highly recommended!

I was really excited to win this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway, and I was not disappointed. Not only is this book full of important, current information, but it's also contains invaluable resources. The resources! The resources alone are worth 5 stars, but it is so very well presented and laid out.

I finished it feeling inspired, but also well equipped to be a better food manager for my own family and home. Me and my local farmer's market are going to become the best of friends thanks to this book.

While living in an actual Agrihood is not for me, I can make my own neighborhood a more farmer supported place and improve my own carbon footprint.

Thank you for the autographed copy.

Loved it! I learned so much about organic food, how far food travels, and facts about local food. The author explains everything so clearly, and the illustrations are great. I loved the backyard farming chapter and the planting guides. I had always thought agrihoods were only in rural areas with just homes and a farm, but no! The way the information is presented is super helpful for anyone looking for a specific amenity like horseback riding or boating. The book has a lot of free resources to obtain more info. Names and websites of all the farms in my area made the purchase definitely worthwhile. Fantastic read!

Awesome! I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review

If you’re interested in the next level of the “buy local” food movement, this book provides a wonderful overview. By “next” level, I am referring to options above and beyond your Saturday local farmers’ market. The book contains facts and figures covering a variety of food topics - providing detailed footnotes should you wish to investigate further. It has detailed chapters explaining the various components of urban farming, agrihoods, backyard farming, community-supported agriculture, on-farm markets, and food hubs. Personally, my new fascination is Agrihoods - healthy lifestyle communities centered around a professionally managed farm.

More than anything, the book is a fantastic resource. The latter portion of the book has a state-by-state listing of agrihoods (with a brief overview of each), CSA programs, on-farm markets, and food hubs (all with associated websites included).

I am excited to explore these opportunities in my community. Plus, I’m planning to explore the programs in other states as I visit family and friends. And when I do, you’ll find me blogging about it at Patch405.com.

I was offered an advance digital copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

An intricately detailed book that talks about agrihood and farming. Actually, there’s more to this book than what the title had stated. I find it very helpful to people who have a passion for food, farming, and agriculture.
One of the things that I learned in this book was the importance of growing our own fruits and vegetables. This book helps individuals to start gardening through CSAs. Even if you are a homeowner, I believe that joining the CSA program remains the best. It gives the most intense training and schooling for beginners on how to start gardening. I’m grateful to have found such a book that could really transform lives and improve the quality of life. This book is very profitable to farmers, agriculturists, and anyone who has a passion for the agriculture industry. I don’t think you’ll be the same after reading this book. Highly recommended!

Welcome to the Agrihood is sure to be of great value to the intended readers. For an honest review, here are my thoughts.
Firstly, this book is great if you are a homeowner. The author will surely give you a variety of information and tons of ways in order to start growing your own produce and thus helping the community and yourself, of course, in food production. Anna Desimone has very amazing and interesting facts and information for the reader in order to get involved in agrihood. For example, she said that when food travels farther away, its nutrients lose, and the taste of the food – especially the fruits and the vegetables – get affected. And so, that’s why reading this book is just a blessing to me because I’m starting to think about gardening. Secondly, if you want to just get involved in agrihood, which is a community of healthy lifestyle, this book has the complete information on where you could find the nearest agrihood in your area. With its national directory in part two, I’m sure you’ll find what you need. Finally, if you want to improve your quality of life, consider reading this book. It’s a great resource for health enthusiasts.
I totally enjoyed the book and learning new things about agrihood. It’s worth the time reading, and the knowledge that you will be gaining from reading this book cannot be paid by money. It’s a great book for anyone living in the United States. However, if you’re a reader outside the U.S. territory, the National Directory wouldn’t apply, and you may have to look for an agrihood community just by yourself. I wish this book could be more international because I intend to give this book as a gift to my overseas friend who is an occasional farmer. I’m sure he’s going to love it. Part two could be of no use to him. But still, I’m giving this book away to him. Overall, highly recommended.

A very informative book charged with wholesomeness and excitement. Perfect for people who are looking for a book to give them inspiration and information at the same time about agrihood that includes food, farming, gardening, horseback riding, boating and fishing, and more. Usually, people would say that starting gardening in urban areas is difficult due to the limitation of the areas where they can farm and grow their own food. However, the author has some profound ideas on ways to start Urban Agriculture anywhere in the states. For example, she introduced rooftop farming that surely could be done by anyone. She also gave helpful tips and ideas on how to start rooftop farming. The author introduced the reader to a company that could truly expand their rooftop farming if they are interested.
I think that growing our own food is very important in our community. There are many helpful benefits that we could have if we start growing our own fruits and vegetables. I’m not saying that we should have a large garden in order to do so. One could start right away with just a small portion of the area. Hear this book out and what the author has to say about the importance of Agrihood. The ones that I’ve written in my review are my own perception of what the book is all about, but these are just of the few insights that I learned upon reading. Surely, there are more insights that the reader would know about, and I’m sure it’s going to create curiosity in their mind and ultimately engage them into this whole idea of agrihood. Read this book and let it fascinate you with food, farming, agriculture, and more. Great read in total!

Whether you enjoy this book or not depends largely on what you expect to find within its pages. If you’re looking for a broad overview of how to incorporate more eco friendly practices into your eating and shopping habits, this book may be just what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a more in-depth look at the agrihood movement or helpful information about growing your own food, you’re better off looking elsewhere.

As a seasoned homesteader, I selected this book hoping for some insight about how to adopt some agrihood practices into our own farm. Unfortunately, it had little to offer in the way of practical advice. This book is more of an overview of eco friendly eating practices combined with a somewhat disorganized list of amenities in existing agrihoods. While the book did touch on various farming practices, it did little more than define them. The bulk of this volume is made up of a state-by-state directory of agrihoods, CSA’s, and local farms. I can’t help but wonder how quickly this information will become out-of-date, and whether it would have been wiser to list this resource online.

While I wouldn’t recommend this book to someone with a working knowledge of agriculture, it could be a helpful guide to someone who wants to adopt a greener way of shopping and feeding their family but doesn’t know where to begin. Likewise, the directory would be a useful resource for those interested in agritourism.

I received an advance review copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

When I got this book, I was very excited to read it because it talked about my passion for gardening and farming. Though the term agrihood was new to me, I am still grateful to have learned so much about it. This book was given to me as a gift from a friend, and because I got interested in the book, I’m leaving an honest review.
Firstly, the authenticity of this book is out of the question. It’s loaded with references and even quotes from famous people just like President Barack Obama. It’s really a great resource to anyone whose passion is farming and agriculture. And if they want to learn more about the agencies and departments that certify the foods and more, this book is perfect for them. Secondly, this book encourages everyone to be living a healthy lifestyle. Imagine, if we have access to the food we ate just right from our backyard, then we eat the best of the best fruits and vegetables without harmful chemicals to maintain their freshness. Food miles really impact the quality of the food. Finally, this book introduced the agrihood community to anyone who wishes to learn more and more about local foods. It also has a national directory for every community throughout the United States, which is really great. Saves a lot of time!
However, this book is only meant for a US-audience. Overall, I found this book educational and helpful. I definitely recommend it.

This book is slowly becoming one of my favorites. It’s amazingly surprising. There are so many things I learned about this book upon reading it. One of which is the food miles. The book nailed it when it explained that the freshness of the food declines the farther it travels, thus resulting in nutrient loss. And the taste also will be affected as it travels farther away to the place where it will eventually be consumed. It made me realize how important it is to grow plants in our own backyard. By doing so, we could avoid the nutrient loss and maintain the original taste of the food, especially the vegetables and fruits. Moreover, thanks to this book, it opened my mind that many things could be affected, not just the food itself but also the environment if food is transported continuously. The vehicles that transport these foods, of course, use fossil fuels because it is required. And burning fossil fuels leads to the emission of greenhouse gasses and contributes to global warming.
I am truly grateful to come across a book like this. It gives profound information and insights to improve human life. Kudos to the author! I’m glad to rate this book a five out of five-star rating.

Another book that would surely captivate your heart and educate your mind. For one, you’ll be amazed at how informative this book is. It’s filled with quotes from famous people like President Obama himself and statistics from trusted agencies. This book speaks of the truth, and I had never questioned its authenticity. Complete with references, it’s a very good resource book for students, agriculturists, economists, and more.
As a consumer, do you ever ask yourself where the food you eat comes from and why it is important to know this thing? This book gives the most profound answer on why it is important to know where food really came from. It’s worth mentioning that the farther the food travels to the location where it will be consumed, the more the freshness of the fruits and vegetables decline. Thus, affecting its taste and nutritional value. I’m just glad that FSMA was enacted over a decade ago to ensure the regulation of foods and how they are processed. Especially when we have so many imported food products from other countries. I’ve learned so many new things by reading this book in just a matter of hours.

Meant for a US-audience, Welcome to the Agrihood seems to leave its warmth at the title and jumps right into informational reference material. Great -- if that's what you're seeking, and probably a great addition to larger school libraries or regional library facilities. If you grabbed Agrihood to further your own dreams of running a farm-to-table business, or coming up with ways to reduce your ecological footprint through your own rooftop garden, you won't find what you're looking for. As stated in the introductory chapters, "this book explores all the places where you can live as well as where you can shop for fresh, locally grown food".

There's nothing 'wrong' with this book; it's well written and thoroughly researched, but I felt it better as an oft-updated website directory than a book that requires yearly republishing.

If you'd like to live in a US-based Agrihood and need a reference book to help you move or buy a property in such a development - buy this book. Otherwise, pass or ask your local library to buy a copy for their reference section.

The greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon that insulates the earth from the cold of space. In 2017, agriculture was responsible for 8.4% of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Food-related energy use accounts for 16% of the national energy budget. Consolidation of farms, food processing operations, and distribution warehouses often increases the distance between food sources and consumers.

With respect to the increasing carbon footprints and greenhouse gas emissions, Agrihood is the way to go. I think the concept really has a long future ahead because it encourages simple living and also survival as it encourages and teaches you to produce your own food for your family. This is really practical and very helpful if you want a lifestyle that is less costly. In terms of technical writing, the writing is spot on, and I am amazed how the author had made this book an interesting experience despite its topics covered that really are for adults. A great concept and really deserves to be shared with a lot of people all over the globe to adapt to this idea.

At the heart of every agrihood community is a working farm and store. Many agrihoods were built on land that was once a farm, and often members of the original farming family stay on board to manage agricultural activities.

I love that in planning the concept of Agrihood, they really consider a lot of factors like social interaction and interest. When you choose to live in the Agrihood, you don’t just purchase local food but you also learn from those producers to start your own mini garden. Every day is really an opportunity to learn something new from your neighborhood. This book serves as a guide to inform us of the different modern Agrihoods in the country, and different information about them like sustainability process, their area, and what their community looks like. Imagine when most of the fruits and vegetables are grown in your community, purchased in farm stores, through the CSA program, or even in your own backyard. This sustainability process is not just environmentally friendly, they are a practical way of living – having less cost and conserving time.

The result of our better quality of life is a quest that one must not stop to vanquish. And this book is our ultimate guide in order to find the holy grail in improving the quality of life, which is Agrihood. I’d like to say that this book is Merlin guiding us into this holy grail of agriculture. The reason why I consider the content of this book as the Holy Grail is because it opens our hearts and minds into loving and embracing organic food and products and encouraging everyone to be involved in farming no matter where you are located. Part two will give you the guide for you to check the possible agrihood communities that you might be interested in.
This book deserves a five out of five stars rating. The consents are one of a kind, and they are very important in our world today. Not all books are totally concerned with what is happening on our planet. This book is just one of the few that has the genuineness to help the reader improve their quality of life. A must-read for everyone!

It’s undeniably sad that our desired lifestyle, especially in the U.S., is slowly depleting its value. Due to many circumstances, people don’t tend to give time in learning the small things that keep us standing on our feet and continually doing our job. We tend to get busier and busier each moment, and we forget to appreciate the value of farming. This book is a book that would connect you to the world of gardening, farming, agriculture, and more. It gives insights on how we could start building a community that has deep concerns about our health and quality of life.
This book is filled with helpful tips and practical applications in order to start a healthier life. Going organic is one of those. Gardening in our own backyard if you are a homeowner is another point that the author suggested. We grow our own produce, we avoid the danger of food miles and thus eating and consuming all the nutrients that the fruits and vegetables have ever had. This book is of great value for farmers, students, and anyone who wishes to have a healthier lifestyle.

When I first got this book, I was totally amazed by the information that the author shared. Knowing and learning agrihood is such a wonderful thing. I love all books about food, gardening, and farming. So when I got this one, I was very excited to read it. And just as expected, this book didn’t fail to give me the best and profound information about agriculture. Moreover, I was really interested to learn about agrihood, because that term is new to me. And not often would you find a book that would discuss agrihood.
The content of the book is amazing. It covers a wide range of studies. The author sure knows how to be an educator. She was able to smoothly discuss the importance of living a life in agrihood and why it is important. For one, if you are a health enthusiast, I’m pretty sure that you’ll love the idea of growing your own food. And I find it very helpful. It also introduced a lot of agencies and departments that certify food as they go to the market. I totally recommend this book.

You don’t have to be an agriculturist or a farmer in order to appreciate this book. It contains important information about agrihood and farming, to name just a few. But what really amazed me is the topic about food. Right from the beginning, the author thoroughly discussed how far food travels and how food miles could affect the taste and degenerate the nutrients of fruits and vegetables.
I think this book is the answer to poverty for real. For one, it encourages everyone to practice gardening in their own backyard or apartment. Depending on your status quo, the author has every answer to your questions on what’s the best way to start growing your own food in your respective premise. Another reason is that this book introduced and encouraged the reader to join a Community-Supported Agriculture program. All the information, including the benefits, were perfectly laid down by the author on page 87, one of the best chapters of this book. Yes! I would definitely recommend the book even to the novice in farming. It’s highly effective.

This is a very brief and superficial introduction to the topic of food communities. The book is really only 100 pages, with the remainder being a list of websites of farms organized by state.

It would be a good read for anyone who doesn't know anything about where food comes from or the variety of options out there for growing food and/or purchasing direct from farmers. If you want practical advice for how to grow your own food, or organize a community garden or local farmer's market, this book is not for you.

If I had written this book I would have included information about how community-based food production and distribution could address issues around food insecurity and food deserts, historical and current problems with land ownership, and several other environmental and social justice issues. The examples of Agrihoods left me imagining that only well-to-do white people would be living in them, which is unfortunate.

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

A notable book that provides one of the superb references on farm-to-table lifestyle. This book will be of great help for people who love living a healthy lifestyle, conserve natural resources, and want to build homes using organic materials. Actually, the author had so much to say about these things that I couldn’t put it all in this review, but I’ll leave that to the reader for them to discover and learn. Learning the importance of Agrihood in our community is the key to the desired lifestyle that one dreamed of. How do we attain a healthy lifestyle, how do we conserve natural resources, and what are the ABC guides to building homes with organic materials? Surely, these profound insights are going to be loved by agriculture enthusiasts.
Nothing that I have for the author other than high admiration and praise. Enlightening and compelling are the best two words to describe this book. It is a must-read for everyone.

Every time I open up new pages, a different kind of excitement runs through my veins. This book is hard to put down. This is the first time that I have had much concern and gained attention to what is happening in the farming and agriculture industry. Thanks to the author for introducing me to these kinds of things.
It’s a beautifully written book filled with practical information on our everyday farming. Are you a farmer? Do you grow plants on your own backward? If not, would you consider growing your own food? This book is going to help you understand why it is important to know our food and our farmers. To learn just how far food travels was actually very significant in our physical health. And thanks to this book for educating me on its importance. Now, I feel more alive and I am inspired more than ever to grow my own food in my own backyard. How cool would that be? I’m sure a lot of people will be intrigued by this idea. And may this book fascinate you as it did to me.

Right from the beginning, I knew that this book is the book that I was looking for after a few months of searching for a book that really gets your interest and gives you profound lessons in life that you could not forget and eventually apply when there’s an opportunity to do so.
The author was a wonderful writer. She writes with ease, and her words are very easy to understand. Though this book is pretty much straightforward, I still love how engaging this book is. The author sure knows how to write with humor and passion. How I wish I could be able to have one of my own gardens to grow my own produce. I know it’s not that hard. I’m just concerned about how to maintain water irrigation when starting up your own garden. Because this book also introduced the agrihood communities in part two, I think it’s accessible to be involved in these things. Such a beautiful book that encourages everyone to be a part of Agriculture and be productive.

Great book in total for agriculture enthusiasts and farmers. This book is complete with references and illustrations to truly inspire readers to participate in agrihood life. You could really see that this is not fast work. The dedication and the effort of the author are prevalent all throughout the pages thereof.
As a farmer myself, I consider this book as one of the best books in the market that deals with farming and agriculture. And this includes home gardening, soil testing, organic, composting, food safety, beekeeping, and more. In addition, the reader would also be able to learn new helpful tips and guides in planting that are sure to be profitable to the readers. It’s a great book in total, and there are so many things I learned about the agrihood community. I’m sure every one of us desires a healthy lifestyle. This book is the right book to talk about having a healthy lifestyle.

This book provides significant information about agrihood and farm-to-table lifestyle. I couldn’t agree more with the author when she said that it’s better for us to grow our fruits and vegetables. This does not only ensure that we have the best product but also keeps the taste of the food as original as possible. To elaborate, the author had stated that when fruits and vegetables are being carried away to the location where they will be consumed, they lose nutrients, and this action affects the taste of the food. It made me realize how important it is to be gardening in our own backyard. Not only that, there’s so much more that the author had written about living a healthy lifestyle. It’s as easy as agrihood. This book introduced you to this kind of community where living a simple life is eminent.
If I have to rate this book, I would be glad to give this a perfect five score. It’s such a satisfying and very educational book to read.
