Following an auspicious encounter with a Saudi fly fisherman who was in over his head, Locke Christensen embraced the good life in the mountain paradise of Telluride, Colorado. Flush with cash, snowboarding by day and playing harmonica in a blues band by night, the retired FBI criminologist and private detective thought he had put his law enforcement career on ice.  But no matter how far you go, the past has a way of catching up with you.  When a family member asks for his assistance in solving a baffling missing persons case near his hometown in the Northwoods of Minnesota, Locke finds himself embroiled in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse with a sociopathic killer, hell-bent on bringing the agency he once worked for to its knees.  Tenacious and vindictive, the mysterious and deadly "Red" relishes a challenge, and Locke's sense of duty places him directly in the crosshairs. He must decide just how much he is willing to lose to see this killer brought to justice. With more twists and turns than a double black diamond, Vermilion is a gripping thriller that takes you deep into the twisted psyche of the criminal mind.

I could not put this down! If you love James Patterson you will love this. Very well written, descriptive and captivating.
Mr. Sauer obviously knows about, Minnesota, Telluride, Co. , music, ice hockey and fishing. You could tell he did not make up scenes....that everything came from life experiences. This is what made the story so believable.
The FBI agent, Locke Christensen has retired to Telluride to snowboard and enjoy a musical nightlife, but his hometown in Minnesota beckons him back due to the untimely deaths of 2 FBI agents.
There are loads of twists, some creepy characters, a little romance and enough mystery to keep you turning the pages.

From the first page to the literal last sentence (!), Vermilion twisted and turned in ways I couldn’t predict. (And I pride myself on being able to figure books out early on!)

This book is gripping. There was ample intrigue to keep me curious and interested, excellent character development to make me attached, and the right amount of oh-my-god-where-did-that-come-from to creep me out!

I enjoyed this book so much that I miss the characters! I hope there’s a sequel because I’m buying it.

this is definitely a good first book. it is easy to read and it flows really well. The setting in northernMinnesota is so well described Jeff. makes you feel like you are there. The characters are well developed and you feel like you know them. Te story line is vey good and keeps you engaged through.Twists and turns there are aplenty and there is a smooth transition in and out. I can’t wait for the sequel or the next book. this guy really knows how to write and how to keep you involved. bravo on such a good first effort.I see a good career for this author. Spread the word o this book and follow this author because the best is yet to come!

If you like a book that holds your interest, offers plots that surprise you at every page turn and keeps you thinking about it when you've finished reading it - this is the book for you! I have never read a book that captures intimacy in such a sophisticated, honest male manner.

The author's descriptions make you feel like you know the characters and are part of the events occurring - the feelings you experience are very real!

I definitely will purchase the sequel if there is one!

This was a great debut novel! It kept me hanging at the end, eager to read the second book. Jeff Sauer develops his characters & storyline very well. Truly suspenseful with details to the settings that only a person who has spent a lot of time in both places would know. I was drawn in to the main characters very quickly. I especially appreciated that he kept the language & violence to a minimum. In my opinion, these are not enhance the plot or storyline, but take away from it.

Jeff Sauer's "Vermilion" is brilliant from beginning to end. Is there a serial killer on the loose? Are they part of the FBI? The vivid writing transported me into the minds of the characters...one by one! So thought provoking and mesmerizing. I could not put the book down. If you like suspense, intrigue and colorful characters, this is the book for you. I give it five stars.

Jeff Sauer has crafted a masterful suspense murder mystery novel in Vermilion. The characters are well rounded and believable; the action is exciting and nail biting; the story moves seamlessly, weaving through a myriad of scenarios to reach its ultimate conclusion. A thoroughly enjoyable read that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end. Can’t wait for the sequel!

Me and my guy both read it, he prefers non-fiction and I prefer fiction. That being said Vermilion took us both on a mystery/murder/thrill ride that kept us entertained throughout and eagerly waiting on the sequel. The characters and story are very believable and makes it a page-turner you won’t want to put down.

An exquisite tale of twists and turns, a real page turner, best book I’ve read this year. A must read.
As the authors first book, I’d say quit your day job, and keep writing. Very descriptive intense story line. I was hoping half way through, a sequel would be in the works. Truly a talented writer now coming out for us all to enjoy.
Thank you, Jeff Sauer.

Wonder first book! Narrative writing was great, and descriptive writing was out of this world! Clearly well documented. Lots of twists and turns and well thought through characters. Sometimes the many minor characters get to be too many to remember, but the main characters are strong and true. Really well done for a first book, so am looking forward to a sequel!

I admit I am not an avid reader. With that said, this book held my interest beyond my expectations! I would have to force myself to put it down to go to bed, only to find myself getting up to read another chapter or more. I am so impressed that this is the author’s, Jeff Sauer, debut novel. I am anxiously waiting for his next book. Excellent read!

One of the best suspenseful thrillers I’ve read in awhile! This book is just shy of 400 pages and I read it in just over a week, that’s the fastest I’ve ever read a book of this size, I couldn’t put it down! I am impatiently awaiting more!

This was a thriller, with lots of twists and turns. It kept me scratching my head about how the mystery was going to unfold. It is a darker thriller so be ready for some intense moments. It will keep you on edge and give you an insatiable desire to continue reading and wonder what will happen next.

Great job Jeff for your first book. I'm sure many more will come. Although not my genre, I'm sure anyone who loves crime dramas and murder mysteries will be enthralled. I was surprised how quickly it moved and how you kept my attention so easily. The story and characters were well written and I believe you have a big future in writing.

It made me cry...it made me laugh...and it kept me in suspense! All the things that makes a mystery GREAT! I was so bummed when I'd finished it, because I didn't want it to end! I don't have a lot of time to read, so a few physical aspects of books are important to me. First, the print can't be small - and the font and size were perfect on this book - made reading easy. Second, the chapter breaks made it easy to pick up from where I had left off and continue reading. These aspects make reading a well-written book (like this one) so enjoyable!
