Rate this book
Have you ever struggled with friendship? This is a story of love, laughter, family, friends and surviving rejection.

Nikki Grey suffers from epilepsy, but she worries more about friendship skirmishes than her health.

Married to a workaholic and the mother of three rebellious children, she forgets her problems one afternoon, smokes marijuana, and has a grand mal seizure. She loses her driver’s license and becomes imprisoned in her home, staring out the window at the neighborhood women who have ostracized her.

Her true friends encourage her to concentrate on herself, but Nikki is her own nemesis. She embarks on a plan to win neighborhood friends back and instead becomes the butt of their jokes. Her ache for their friendship escalates.

Not until her two-timing husband asks her a question that catapults her frivolous suburban life into a tailspin, is she forced to stop reaching out for others and stand on her own.

Friends Who Move Couches is a story for all women.

Cyndie "CJ" Zahner is a digital-book hoarder, lover of can't-put-down books, wife, mother, grandmother, runner, and author of seven novels.

On April 1, 2025, her memoir, The House That Loved, was released. The story is about a drug prescribed to millions of pregnant women, including her mother. Uniquely, the novel's POV is a house, signifying the millions of homes, worldwide, that shelter DES children. Zahner is a DES daughter.

Her other books include four thrillers, The Suicide Gene, Dream Wide Awake, Project Dream, The Dream Diaries, and three chick lit novels in her Awkward Mothers You Hate Loving series, Friends Who Move Couches, Don't Mind Me, I Came with the House, and PLease Post Bail, Love Mom.

Her novels were inspired during long runs on Presque Isle State Park in the town where she grew up, Erie, Pennsylvania, and others on the trails surrounding her new home near Raleigh, NC.

Before becoming a novelist, CJ worked as a grant and freelance writer. Her articles varied from business to women’s health to the paranormal.

In 2015, she began looking at life differently when her brother and his wife were diagnosed with dementia and early-onset Alzheimer’s. At that time, her husband pulled her aside and said, “Quit your job. You’re a writer.” After twenty years of service, CJ picked up her purse at work one day and quietly walked away.

Now, she rises before dawn, writes, runs, and smiles much.

A hard worker and story lover, CJ Zahner is determined to read, write, and run happily ever after.

Please note: I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

I adored this book - it's a completely different genre to her other titles but it's almost effortlessly written, with her producing a really funny and engaging story. I loved that it's an "almost memoir" - the fact that some of the scenes are based on real situations makes them even more real, and often a lot funnier to know that something similar took place! Character development is excellent, and the plot and sub-plots were really good. I'm hoping Zahner writes more within this genre as this was such a good read! Very sad when it ended.

Nikki Grey is your typical suburban wife and mother with one exception: she has epilepsy. While spending the afternoon with a group of her best friends drinking wine and smoking weed, Nikki has a grand mal seizure. In one fell swoop, she's confined to her home and can feel the walls closing in. Her workaholic husband, she discovers, is leading a secret life and she's at a crossroads. Luckily, she has her dyed in the wool true girlfriends and they will stick by her, no matter what happens. Obsessing over past friendships overwhelms Nikki but when she tries too hard to win their friendship, they only laugh at her. It's only when she delves into deep introspection that she realizes what's important in life. Will she be able to stand on her own or will she lose everyone close to her?

Friends Who Move Couches is an incredible story about life, love, friendships, and quieting your inner critic. When life crashes around your head, who you can count on, and who you can't become the only barometer necessary. Every single woman I know will be able to relate to the women portrayed in this book. CJ Zahner delves into women friendships with startling clarity and humor. Think Sex and the City meets Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. The antics Nikki and her friends get into, even if they're just chatting while sipping a cocktail made me laugh out loud. The drama is certainly there and very accurate in its scope. The plot moves at an even pace and I found myself reading late into the night because I just had to be with Nikki just a little bit longer (hello 3 am). Emotional, gripping, humorous, and insightful, I recommend this book to women around the world. You'll see yourself and your group of close girlfriends hidden in this story. Highly recommend.

Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it.

Favorite Quote or Character:
"Friends can't live your life for you, Naggy. We can love and support you, but we can't save you from yourself. If you want to spend the rest of your life with a man who cheats on you because of the rattling of little balls on the roof scares you at night, well then, you're not the person I thought you were."

Friends Who Move Couches read like two different books to me. I struggled with the first half to the point where I stopped reading it. The different friends and their relationships confused me and to be honest I didn't particularly like Nikki Grey. I was judging her- drinking and smoking pot although an epileptic, living comfortably on her workaholic husband's money, her attitude towards her children and her pathetic need for girlfriends. Then I realized she's an amazing character to have gotten under my skin and I am so glad I finished it. The pace picked up and what unfolds is a story of true friendship and a woman "finding herself". A unique storyline that runs the gambit of emotions. A perfect story to read with your girlfriends!

Almost a memoir. That’s the first of many giggles the reader will get upon immersing oneself into this book. This novel is sold as humour or in that personally dreaded of places, women's fiction, but to add it to the women's fiction genre is to deny the fun of this piece to readers of box sexes. This is a funny book and relatable on so many levels. If you have poured your heart and soul into friendship only to have it stolen, taken or whisked away from you, you are going to relate to the idea behind this book. Based loosely on the real-life experience of the author, it is a fun read about how we would like to grow up and deal with grief and pain of lost friendship and betrayal.

Nikki Grey is a woman with twenty-something years of marriage behind her, complete with three children. She lives in a snooty part of town, and until recently was the life and soul of the party and have friends everywhere. But that was before ‘war’ was declared and several friends have alienated her from her friendship groups, something that Nikki does not take well. Nikki is, admittedly, needy. She needs every single one of her friends or she feels incomplete.

A good friend will help you move couches, but a true friend will help you move a body.

There are different levels of friendship according to Nikki, and her truest friends have stood by Nikki for years, despite the bad mouthing that has gone on with the icing that previous friends have done to make Nikki an outsider. They are loyal to her and take care of her needs as she deals with medical conditions that exclude her from driving a car. And when the proverbial hits the fan and Nikki’s life descends into utter chaos, the friends rally around and rather than continue to baby her, as they have for years, they insist that she grow a backbone and take care of problems with support but on her own. It is the kindest, best gift one person can give another, the belief in another to deal with stuff successfully rather than carrying them as if they are invalid. And believe me, this faith from her friends is required. Nikki’s life plunges into utter madness and grief. But she does grow up. She becomes a strong woman that is, as the internet meme says, a Queen handling her own shite.

This book takes time to worm its way into your heart. Admittedly the first half of the book was annoying as Nikki lunges from one (often self-inflicted) disaster to another, but somehow from the middle of the book, she starts to grow up and become the heroine of one's dreams. You will find your heart thumping as she does things – naughty things that screw over the gaslighter who has screwed her over for years – that you might only dream of doing, but she does them and you will be cheering her on. Quite simply, she rocks! This book is funny - even more so because it's almost a memoir! It will require a commitment to reading all the way through, but the ultimate pay off will be more than amply given. And one can't help but wish for a circle of friends that are as close and wonderful as Nikki is surrounded by. Because by the end of this book, Nikki has learned the truth of what real friendship is about; and about who to chase after and who to let be kicked to the curb.

Read this book. You’ll love it.

This is the book! I never laughed out loud so much reading a book. It was to the point my husband was asking me to quiet down! I could relate to the incidents in this that caused me to laugh so much. Then the book gets a bit serious when you wonder if the main character can really pull off her plan to change her life.
This is the best book yet written by this author. I think that is because she is dealing with almost real life and you can't make that stuff up. The author has a funny way to tell the story that just makes you endear yourself to the main character. You are actually inside her head and you wonder how much is real life or not.
When you finish a book and you remember the story line, I find it is a good read. It is well written with the twists and turns that I didn't figure out until it was revealed in the book. I just didn't see them coming. Love this book!

I received a free copy of this book from the author for an honest opinion. Writing a review was easy because the book is that good!

This is the funniest heartwarming book I have read in a long time! Nikki’s life is a mess she makes her children mad, her husband disappointed and she has an obsession with never losing friends. The situations she gets herself into are hysterical but underneath it all her friendships are mostly solid but her obsession with the friends who aren’t solid makes for a great story. I will be looking forward to more from this author.

I loved this book! I read it in one day because I couldn't wait to find out what happened to Nikki. It's a real page turner, with rich characters. I liked the mixture of comedy and drama. The story questions who we are and who we want to be.

This book started out a little slow, but it made up for it. I wasn't sure how I felt about Nicole. I loved her tried and true friends, especially Evy! Once Nicole started standing up for herself, I liked her alot more. I enjoyed reading about the things she and her friends got up to, but I think the parade was my absolute favorite part of the entire book. This was a good light read that made me laugh!

This is a great book that has you laughing and crying the next minute. If you want to read a “Girl’s Book” this is it. So many parts of this can be related to your own life if you have raised children. I see a lot of my friends, past and present, in these women. Get a glass of wine and enjoy reading this book. You won’t regret it.

Friends Who Move Couches is a fun read. It is highly entertaining while at the same time has the reader thinking about deep and true friendships that nourish us versus those best left behind. C.J. Zahner masterfully weaves important aspects her life journey into this book. You are taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions from laughing out loud (often), to feeling anxious and concerned, to being close to tears, to anger, to cheering wildly for a certain outcome.

This is a book that women will find so relatable. C.J. has added her warm flavor of humor throughout the book that will keep you smiling and laughing. But she has also touched on some parts that are so poignant that you will be wistful, grieving, recounting when you had that very thought or very feeling. Encaptures a woman's quest to fit in within the social boundaries of female society. A woman's quest to feel fulfilled and appreciated in motherhood where you give your all to your children-who inherently can't appreciate your sacrifices, or even see you as a person with needs outside of their own. And, of course, leaves you with deep gratitude and thankfulness as we recall those very select special friends we meet in life who love us purely and deeply- just for who we really are. Fantastic, enjoyable read

What a funny book about your friends, your friends no more, your best buds, your neighbors! Add that to the serious aspect of your life and you've got a wonderful read. Read it in 2 days which is fast for me. I kept wanting to know what antic or "oopsey daisy" was lurking around the corner. Just desserts in the end!

Fantastic read recommended by a couple of book friends!

This was a semi-autobiography and will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. I loved this wonderfully eclectic set of characters, they all added a little bit more into the mix. Everyone needs friends like this!

In the end I loved how we got a glimpse into what was real and what was fiction!

Great book! Nikki Grey is the typical suburban mom. She has 3 wild kids who don't like her very much, a workaholic husband, and a group of friends. She also has epilepsy. At the beginning of the book, her friends are gathered drinking wine and smoking marijuana which leads to a grand mal seizure. This causes her to lose her drivers license for 6 months.

While confined to her home, depending on others to take her anywhere she needs to go, she decides to mend some broken friendships. This doesn't go quite as planned. Then she learns the truth about her husband. Nikki's world is knocked off kilter. She has to find her inner strength in order to find her way back to normal.

I really enjoyed reading all of Nikki's exploits. Her life may not be what she expected it to be. She has obstacles to overcome. She has to dig deep to find out how strong she really is. I would like to have a Nikki in my own life.

Even with some of the heavier topics explored in this book, it was laugh out loud funny. There were so many funny parts where I literally laughed out loud. This was a really fun book to read.

I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book. It is categorized as humor, but I found very little about the book that was funny. Nikki Grey has epilepsy. And she has an obsession - an obsession to have tons of friends. She measures her worth by the number of friends she has. A grand mal seizure sends her into a downward spiral and her true friends rally to her side. She has a husband and three children, who all seem to see her as an embarrassment and annoyance. Through various escapades, Nikki further distances her children and husband. She is determined to win the friendship of the most wealthy woman in the small community and will stop at nothing to accomplish that. Of course, it all backfires. I do have to say I loved the way the book wrapped up. Justice was served in a big satisfying way and Nikki found her way to becoming a strong independent woman who still loved her friends with all her heart. They turned out not to be friends who move couches, but friends who move bodies. Reading the author's notes at the end of the book, I find that this is somewhat of a memoir. Ms. Zahner started each chapter with a personal note or saying that alluded to that, but until I read her notes, didn't fully grasp that this was a memoir. The story flowed and unfolded in a way that kept me turning the pages. If you are looking for something different from anything else you've ever read, you will enjoy this story and its high drama.

One reviewer said it best. This is a "Find Yourself" book. Women will laugh-out-load (maybe cry a bit) over Nikki Grey's friend and family struggles.

Who should read? If you've ever felt unappreciated by your family, suffered a friendship loss, lived through a full-blown friendship war, or truly feel you have the best friend (s) in the world, this book is for you.

This is almost a memoir. It is inspired by true events (but spiced up because, well, this is fiction). At the beginning of each chapter a true statement inspired by life or the lives of one of my friends, hints what's about to happen.

This was a blast to write. Thank you to my friends who inspired this novel: Carol Crandall, Carolyn LaFata, Cyndie Krahe, Debbe Linendoll, Heather Cass, Jan Vieyra, Karen Kalivoda, Karen Bukowski, Laura Lewis, Linda Huegel, Leanne Parmenter, Nancy Hogan, Rana Evanoff, Roselle Walkowicz, Rochelle Vincintini, Robin Smith, Roseanne Palermo, Teresa Wigham, and YES! Jody Cancilla Pittock and Val Maier Ellis. Ilove you all. (I'd move a body for you guys!)

Friends Who Move Couches was such a good read, and hit home with me I so many ways. Like Nikki, I have been lucky enough to have some very good, close friends that would definitely help me move more than “Couches” and really understood the love, and loss, she felt. I enjoyed the camaraderie with her friends, the antics they got up to, her love for her family and could relate to her self-doubt and questioning of everything. Highly recommend this. It’s the fourth book by this author I have read and she just keeps getting better and better. Can’t wait for the next one! I was given a free copy by the author for an honest review.

At first, this story had me confused with the introduction of many characters in the book. As I kept reading I grew to like this story.
Nikki Grey surrounded herself with friends because of a lack of family. Until a health crisis had what she seemed as a happy marriage to Mark. After experiencing a seizure and a hospital stay, she founds bits and pieces of her nicely woven life unfurling. Out of all this, she becomes stronger and independent and evaluates her relationships and friendships. She finds out which friends will move couches and who will move bodies.
This story made me cry and laugh out loud. I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

This book gets you right from the beginning!
This is more than just a book about friends and family, it's about finding your worth, your inner beast, and standing up for yourself!
I laughed so much reading this that I was actually crying! Nikki is hilarious, and I could relate to her in so many ways. When everything in her life starts spiraling down, her friends and kids bring her back, only this time, she's the one with the plan! She gets her life back, stronger than before! Of course, it wouldn't be typical Nikki without something embarrassing happening at the end, and she goes out with a bang! Literally falling off the roof!
I absolutely LOVED this book!

This book was a great read. It went so quickly as I didn't want to put it down. The story line is so realistic and I could vision the entire story with the characters the whole way through. It really gives a point of view of how friendships go sometimes. And it really tells the story on how friendships should be. It was easy to follow along in the book as sometimes in books when they jump around I can't stay focused on the book and this book was not like that. Definitely easy book to finish in a weekend. Real life!
This book runs the gamut of emotions from sad to laugh out loud funny! It explores friends who stand by us in hard times compared to those that simply desert. Nikki’s life is in constant upheaval in this story, and she is doing her utmost to keep things (especially her family) intact. She does this despite rejection from several directions in addition to the fact that she has epilepsy. I actually felt proud of her when she decides to not just “take it” but to fight for herself and the life she deserves.

A Rollercoaster Life with Friends

The story is about Nikki, her family, and friends. Nikki has always been dependent on people to help her get through life. She feels great loss over friendship that are no longer there. She develops a plan to get those lost friendships back but along the way she has to take a deep look at herself. She decides she only needs the friendships that will help her "move the body" and not just the couch. It was a good story and I enjoyed reading it.

Perfect timing

Reader Kat: Purchased this book a while back when I found a sale on Amazon, had no idea what it was about but I bought it. Finally got around to reading & absolutely loved every bit. Perfect timing in my life as I sometimes feel so dependent on friends as I come from a small family, & my mom recently passed from dementia at the young age of 67, I’m in my early 30s.
I wouldn’t be who I am or be able to get through life without my friends, who would most definitely help me move bodies.

This is what I would call a "find yourself" story. Nikki is a wife and mother who doesn't get along with her neighbors. One mistake and everything in her world are changed. Nikki's friends encourage her to take care of herself, but she is her own worse enemy. This story shows the reader not to take themselves too seriously and it is okay to learn new things about yourself that others may already know. Friends Who Move Couches is an entertaining, true to life journey of a typical suburban wife. I loved that Nikki goes through so much with friends, the good and the bad. By "luck" after an afternoon of drinking and smoking weed Nikki's life changes forever. This book is packed with good friends, crazy antics, humor, drama and twists that had me turning the pages. This book was so funny.  Nikki's life is a mess. She has bratty kids, that are disrespectful. Her husband puts work first and is always gone or coming home late. She hates to be alone. day she desides to be free and she has an episode.  She gets her license suspend and is stuck at home. She gas such great friends that hep her out so much and tell her how it is. I laughed throughout this whole book.

You must read this book!

First it’s just great and funny. It’s a story every women needs to read. But I feel everyone could love this book. Nikki is the best character and her friends the true one stick by her side no matter what. It’s inspiring in the sense that no one needs a Mark Grey in their life and that we all need to stand up for ourselves. Truly a book worth reading more than once!

I wanted to love this book but unfortunately I didn’t. It was a very slow start for me. I had a lot of trouble keeping up with who was who of the friends.

The pacing seemed off—slow in some places, too fast in others. I found myself skimming in a few places.

As a reader, I also had a hard time connecting with Nikki.
