About the author

Irish-born Abraham Stoker, known as Bram, of Britain wrote the gothic horror novel Dracula (1897).

The feminist Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornely Stoker at 15 Marino crescent, then as now called "the crescent," in Fairview, a coastal suburb of Dublin, Ireland, bore this third of seven children. The parents, members of church of Ireland, attended the parish church of Saint John the Baptist, located on Seafield road west in Clontarf with their baptized children.

Stoker, an invalid, started school at the age of seven years in 1854, when he made a complete and astounding recovery. Of this time, Stoker wrote, "I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years."

After his recovery, he, a normal young man, even excelled as a university athlete at Trinity college, Dublin form 1864 to 1870 and graduated with honors in mathematics. He served as auditor of the college historical society and as president of the university philosophical society with his first paper on "Sensationalism in Fiction and Society."

In 1876, while employed as a civil servant in Dublin, Stoker wrote a non-fiction book (The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland, published 1879) and theatre reviews for The Dublin Mail, a newspaper partly owned by fellow horror writer J. Sheridan Le Fanu. His interest in theatre led to a lifelong friendship with the English actor Henry Irving. He also wrote stories, and in 1872 "The Crystal Cup" was published by the London Society, followed by "The Chain of Destiny" in four parts in The Shamrock.

In 1878 Stoker married Florence Balcombe, a celebrated beauty whose former suitor was Oscar Wilde. The couple moved to London, where Stoker became business manager (at first as acting-manager) of Irving's Lyceum Theatre, a post he held for 27 years. The collaboration with Irving was very important for Stoker and through him he became involved in London's high society, where he met, among other notables, James McNeil Whistler, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the course of Irving's tours, Stoker got the chance to travel around the world.

The Stokers had one son, Irving Noel, who was born on December 31, 1879.

People cremated the body of Bram Stoker and placed his ashes placed in a display urn at Golders green crematorium. After death of Irving Noel Stoker in 1961, people added his ashes to that urn. Despite the original plan to keep ashes of his parents together, after death, people scattered ashes of Florence Stoker at the gardens of rest.

Eine atmosphärische Erzählung, in der die Hauptperson die zerstörerische See Schottlands mimt. Großartige Ausgabe, mit wahnsinnig interessantem Nachwort des Übersetzers, Alexander Pechmann, das den Wert des Buches nochmal deutlich hebt.

Die Idee der Geschichte ist nicht übermäßig originell, aber die Darstellung der Natur ist durchaus lesenswert.
Es wäre schön, wenn die Charaktere etwas weniger eindimensional wären (keine Figur in der Handlung schafft es über den Anschein eine Karikatur zu sein hinaus).
Alles in allem ist es wohl gut, dass Bram Stoker für Dracula in Erinnerung geblieben ist.

The Watter's Mou', meaning "the water's mouth," revolves around the romance between a young coast guard officer and his fiancée, the daughter of a fisherman. The chief boatman, William Barrow or Sailor Willy as he is popularly known, is tasked with dealing with smuggling going on among the local fishermen, including his girlfriend's father. A well written Victorian classic tale of love and duty.

Eine intensive und sprachgewaltige Novelle rund um eine tragische Liebesgeschichte.
William ist Bootsführer bei der Küstenwache und muss die Küsten überwachen, da Schmuggler erwartet werden. Seine Verlobte Maggie steckt in einem Zwiespalt, denn einer der Schmuggler ist ihr Vater. Die beiden Liebenden sind hin und hergerissen zwischen Liebe und Pflichterfüllung. Auf den rund 120 Seiten dieses Romans wird das Dilemma ausgebreitet, manchmal vielleicht etwas melodramatisch. Aber der eigentlich Hauptdarsteller ist hier das Meer, das Bram Stoker wie eine Person darstellt, mit wilden Gefühlen, mit Zorn und Urgewalt. Und das ist spannend und mitreißend erzählt und lässt mich durch die Seiten fliegen. Die Naturbeschreibungen sind so gut, dass mein Kopfkino ständig angelaufen ist und ich mitten in der Geschichte war.
Abgerundet wird dieser Klassiker durch ein sehr ausführliches Nachwort in dem Bram Stokers Beziehung zum Meer erklärt wird und eine kleine Kurzbiographie ist auch inkludiert. Mir war nicht bewusst, was Bram Stoker neben Dracula noch alles geschrieben und was er noch alle gearbeitet hat. Das war wirklich noch interessant.
Zum Schluß sei noch die wirklich tolle Aufmachung dieses Buches hervorgehoben. Mare hat seiner Klassikern eine tolle kleine Serie herausgebracht, in Leinen gebunden, mit einem Gemälde als Einbandbild. Wunderschön und sehr wertig.

We're definitely in Stoker's golden age right here: Like The Snake's Pass, we have the strong characters with compelling stories, firmly grounded in a geographical location (with elaborate description of the geology) and ensconced in a difficult social situation. The scenario here is that an upright member of the (English) coast guard must arrest a bunch of smugglers who are planning a run—and the smugglers include the family of his fiancee. Meanwhile, the fiancee has to wrestle with the fact that she can't ask her man to overlook the wrongdoing—indeed, the reason her family was picked was doubtless because of her relationship to the hero—but she also has loyalty to her family.

And the thing is, you won't know till the very end who lives or dies. So even though this isn't a supernatural horror, or necessarily a horror story at all, it has many similar elements. On to Shasta, next!

A melodrama about the daughter of a smugger who's engaged to be married to a member of the coastguard. "Sailor Willie" is an unlikable prig, not so much because of his principles--I do, at the end of the day, think people should pay their taxes--but because of the moral historionics he uses to express them.

"Maggie, lass! What's this you're saying to me? It isn't fit for you to speak or me to hear! It's bad enough to be a smuggler, but what is it that you would make of me? Not only a smuggler, but a perjurer and a traitor too. God! am I mistaken? Is it you, Maggie, that would make this of me? Of me! Maggie MacWhirter, if this be your counsel, then God help us both! you are no fit wife
for me!"

Get over yourself. It had its charm though, found mainly in its wild description of the coast, the ocean, and the weather. And the last chapter, when people are unsure if a character is alive, has some pretty touching depictions of grief--marred, however, by tedious religious moralizing.

مشكلتي مع ستوكر أنه متأخر عن عصره ، في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر أقلام ناضجة في طرحها الروائي وموضوعها ، كما أن الرواية في عصره مرت بتطور لا ينحصر الهيكل فيه على الحكايا الشعبية ..
مشكلة هذه القصة التسطيح و جمالها في وصف المدخل المائي و البيئة المحيطة .

هناك أمر استغربته في شخصية المرأة الوحيدة .. ماقي ، يمكن اعتبارها الشخصية الرئيسية وهي الوحيدة المركبة بقية الشخصيات تستطيع اختصارهم بكلمة ، ولعل هذا راجع لتصور المؤلف عن المرأة، فقد كان حريص على إدخال " طبيعة المرأة " في أفعالها ، وكعادة التصورات التقليدية نجد تناقض غريب .. فهي كمرأة لا تملك التفريق بين الصواب و الخطأ وهي التي انقذت الرجال وعلمت النساء معاني الصبر و التضحية ! ..

A nice little story about crime, responsibility, duty and love. People who like maritime settings will be delighted, even though there are some passages that are a bit stretched (especially the descriptions of the coast and sea) Nevertheless a nice short adventure-novel.

zu kitschig (im schlechten sinne), zu viel "alle frauen sind so und richtige männer so", die figuren auch sehr cookiecutter. nicht dass (v.a. frauen-)figuren in Dracula nicht mega Klischee waren aber sie waren nicht so (pun intended) blutleer wie in diesem Buch. zu viel boot-gedöns und zu wenig punchy landschaftsbeschreibungen für meinen Geschmack. in einem sitting am ebenfalls zornigen atlantik durchgelesen, das war nice ᕦ⁠ʕ⁠ ⁠•⁠ᴥ⁠•⁠ʔ⁠ᕤ

•In einem schottischen Dorf voller Schmuggler Nahe der stürmischen Küste, leben William - ein pflichtbewusster junger Zöllner und seine Verlobte - Maggie. Ihr verarmter Vater hat Schulden und wird von einem Schurken gezwungen mit seinem Fischerboot Konterbande an Land zu bringen. William erfährt davon und gerät in ein Dilemma.•

Stoker erzählt somit eine Geschichte über DIE klassischen Konflikte überhaupt.
Tugend oder Schuldenfreiheit, Pflichterfüllung oder Liebe, Dienstherr oder Familie.
Ganz klar DER Stoff, aus dem Tragödien bestehen.
Man könnte also meinen, das sind alles rührselige Schmachtfetzen für einen überaus schnulzigen Roman a là antikem, hellenischem Drama.
Weit gefehlt. Denn diesem genialen Autor gelingt etwas Phänomenales: eine gekonnte Verschiebung der Perspektive.
Wo der Leser noch mit dem Gewissenskonflikt des jungen Zöllners mitfühlt, gerät Maggie als Protagonistin in den Fokus, um dann wiederum Platz zu schaffen für die tragende Hauptrolle des Buches
- das zornige Meer.
 
Obwohl dieses Werk nur knapp 170 Seiten hat, ist es spannend, atmosphärisch und metaphorisch sprachgewaltig.
Für mich eine echte Entdeckung und ab sofort eins meiner absoluten Lieblingsbücher.
Ein echter Klassiker, den man gelesen haben sollte.

My Thoughts:

My Positives:
- As with all of Bram Stokers' work, it is well written.
- The love between Willy Barrow and Maggie MacWhirter is strong.
- Maggie is a strong and brave woman who risks it all for her family.
- The ending, although sad, is beautiful.

My Negatives:
- The old time of writing doesn't work for me as paragraphs take up full pages and make it easy to lose your spot.
- The sailor talk made it hard for me to understand what was being said sometimes.

Final Thoughts:
This, like all of Bram Stoker's work, is written very well, and I enjoyed it. It was not my favorite story by him, but it was still pretty good.
