However, after all that's taken place, will the world ever be ready to accept a hero who also happens to be a ninja?
Well, I can honestly say without a doubt that I've never read anything quite like this before ... and, I thought it was great! Brought back so many childhood memories for me ... TNMT and Duck Hunt being at the top of that nastalgia list - oh the countless hours I spent on those gems.
I thought the recipes tucked between the chapters were brilliant ... meatballs with chocolate chips? I mean, I'm not opposed to giving it a go. Sweet and salty .... yes please!
This was a quick and very entertaining read! Even got me with a couple of the twists. And who doesn't love Ninja's!? Looking forward to reading book two! Thanks so much for my copy Andrew!!
Wow! What a fun, action packed and funny read! It's not often that I hear myself literally laughing out loud while reading a book but I sure did with this one. The crazy characters in this book have real heart, they are thrust into bizarre circumstances and rocked by tragedy. I love how they respond to obstacles with courage and humor.
I know the author. He knows I read a lot so he gave me an advanced copy of his book for free in exchange for an honest review. I liked it, I didn’t love it or anything, but I liked it and I can honestly say I’ve never read anything quite like it. This guy’s imagination is weird. If you want to read a book that has Ninjas and obesity and mutated monkeys with vampires on the side, this book is for you. If that sounds cool to you, you will probably love this story. I was also pleasantly surprised by the fact that I didn’t see a single grammatical error. I’m sure there were a few, but I didn’t see any and they usually jump right out at me. The best thing about this book to me was the mystery surrounding who the “Fat Master” was. I can’t believe I just typed that sentence. Seriously though, I had my guesses but the ending got me. I think young folks who read comic books and watch horror movies will like this more than I did, and obviously people who love Kung -fu type stuff. I am interested in where the story will go in the next book. I am giving it four stars because I think younger readers will go crazy for it, for me it was probably three stars, but three stars is still good!
I met this author at a local bookstore selling copies of his book. I love talking to new authors whenever I see them because it would be cool to say I met them if they ever made it big. I wasn’t going to buy a copy of the book, fat whack didn’t seem like my style. But I recently read a book I adored called Ninja Girl. I asked him and the author told me that he had not read Ninja Girl but his book was about ninjas and there was a girl in it lol. He said one of the main characters was a bad ass girl named Carina. I was interested, but I didn’t have 10 bucks and he could only accept cash. He gave me a copy for free, which was super cool! I told him I would leave a review- A few chapters in I was worried because it was good but like I said it was a little crazy for me. Then I got to the chapter with the Carina character. She is amazing and I love her. Actually I love all of the characters in this book. What’s also cool is that almost all of the characters are either Japanese or Hispanic and a lot of them are in their sixties! Overall this was a quick story with some absolutely crazy stuff that happens in it and although there isn’t much romance stuff in it, there is a hint of some to come and I hope the next book gets into it. I liked the Ninja Girl book better but it’s not really fair to compare the two because they are so different. I have been looking on Amazon a lot and as soon as fat whack became available I preordered a copy-after all I owed the author 10 bucks lol.
Fat Whack is akin to a mystery multi-course dinner planned in a way one might think haphazard, but in the end evolves to be a brilliant combination of flavors of which the Chef (Franks) painstakingly crafted. The characters shine in this action-packed and wonderfully sentimental story of ninjas, food, and family. It is fun and lighthearted, but maintains an urgency that keeps you turning pages and wondering what happens next. Just like that meal from your favorite fast food joint you can’t resist, you can’t pass this book up.
I’m a big martial arts movie fan. Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung...the list of martial artists that I love goes on and on. This book felt a little like a Stephen chow film. I actually laughed out loud a few times. It has a sense of humor and doesn’t take itself too seriously. I highly recommend it.
I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy of this book and it was very good! My son, who is 10 and a strong reader very much enjoyed this book. He is already excited for the next book. This is a good read and is much different in a good way then most recent books I have read. It is very enjoyable and I definitely recommend this book without hesitation.
What a fun ride! Who can resist ninjas and food? What surprised me was the exciting story told in the midst of all the suspense and the fun. The characters are genuine and the plot is engaging. There are some laugh out loud moments and sweet moments as well. If you need a book that is going to entertain you, this is it. I had a fabulous fat whacking time!
An intense and creative tale that is well told! One that draws you in quickly and holds on tightly as it takes you through many twists and turns. I like how the story built and deepened as I read further. Highly recommend!
This book reminds me of an Anime or Manga/Graphic Novel (p.s-would love to see it as a graphic novel). I personally love books that go back and forth between timelines and character perspectives. Transitions were flawless and I love a good twist or being surprised by something I didn't see coming. It was a fun/comical read, I was able to finish in a little over 2 hours.
My favorite part was the diary readings...at first I thought maybe this was from Andrew's actual childhood diary, but the last entry proved me wrong.
I’m still trying to decide if the layout of this book is genius or sloppy. I guess it doesn’t really matter because I liked it a lot. I’ve read it twice and the time lines add up. I caught a lot of new things on my second read. I also liked the Asian influences in it.
I bought it for my teenage son at a comic book store. I like that he reads comic books but whenever he is interested in a real book (not that comics aren’t books because they are) it makes me happy. I usually read whatever book he is interested in before he does just to make sure there is nothing bad in it. I didn’t read this one first. He loved it so much he started reading it again as soon as it was over and was telling his friends about it. I knew then that the book must have some stuff in it I wouldn’t like him reading so I read it. It is a quick read, I read it in one night. Here’s the thing, it’s violent. It is over the top and cartoonish violence but it’s still violence. A persons head gets cut off in the first chapter. Also, there is cussing. Not a lot of cussing, but one of the three curse words that I counted was a doozy. As a Christian woman I don’t like swearing, it’s just how I was raised. However I let my kids watch PG-13 movies and they play some pretty crazy video games and this is no worse than those. It kinda reminded me of a PG-13 Pixar movie. And the way it’s written, it’s like it’s for kids and teens but it doesn’t dumb things down for them. The chapters are skipping back and forth through the years and you have to stick with the story and piece it all together. Even I was confused at first but in the end it all started making sense. I love that my son stuck with it and put the puzzle together. I quizzed him on things that happened in the book and he was able to figure most of it out. Also the main character ended up being a girl who was more competent in fighting than the guy, but the guy wasn’t made out to be a bumbling idiot. They worked together to defeat the bad guy. I think the book further helped my son to realize girls are powerful and capable and it’s ok and even cool to root for them as the hero of a story. I dare say this book helped my son grow up a little while also letting his adrenaline filled imagination run wild. My younger boy desperately wants to read it now. My teenager told him ninja turtles show up in the story (they don’t but there are ninja turtle references) I will probably read him the story and leave out a few details and words. If you are a parent like me that is careful about what your kids watch, I think this book is good as long as you interact with them and talk with them after.
This is a pretty great book for a first time author. It has a unique style and once it gets going it goes. The only bad thing I can say about it is that I wanted more, but they say leave them wanting more, so... I want more that’s for sure. I’m glad there is going to be a book two, at least I assume there will be since this says book one.
I have definitely never read a book like this one! It’s such a creative, crazy (in a good way), and interesting story and concept. It’s also well-written, funny, and fast moving—I didn’t want to put it down! It reads like a movie with so many action scenes, and I hope to see it on the big screen one day!
Andrew Franks, what in the holy heck of everything have you created here??! 😲🤭😂🤣 OMG at halfway through... A. I had no idea what to expect from one page to the next B. I didn't want to put it down, but, well, life C. I felt compelled to share this before finishing bc your book is that awesome D. I will never try chocolate chips in meatballs 😂 E. Your pop culture references are spot on👌 F. Ninjas and Dr. Dracula 🤣 G. Where on Earth did this even come from??
I don't think I've ever...🤔...no, I never have...posted a midway review before (although I'm posting this on GoodReads after finishing)! 😂 If you're a child of the 80s, a geek of any sort who likes to read, or are in search of a fun story that doesn't take itself too seriously (at all seriously?), then check out Fat Whack. Writers - take all the writing rules in existence and burn them. They don't matter. Now, take everything in your head and write it down, form it into an oddly cohesive mix wrapped in a plot, and run with it. This is proof that anything works!
Dude, at first I was digging it but kept thinking, "For the love of God man, pick a tense!" but even that works with this mashup of fun and the way the chapters jump from one to the next (and to Frank's credit - he wrote this book on his *cellphone*). I seriously did not expect to have as much fun reading this as I did. People - where else will you get fat whackers, ninjas, vampires, face-eating cats, interludes, and junk food recipes (and after completion toss in cannibals, rednecks, spirits, and OMG TAKESHI'S CASTLE!)? Nowhere but here. I wish I could have enjoyed Ready Player One this much. Maybe if Andrew had written it...🤨😂
Oh my G O S H! This book is amazing, it’s creative, it’s funny and where else are you going to read... and I quote “But what happens when ninjas start killing clients instead of calories?”
When I received it I thought it was a weight loss book. It wasn’t. It was different and fun and I liked it a lot. Unrelated, I have lost 3 pounds since I read it. Maybe I’ll read it again.
Are you looking for the perfect book to get your mind off of everything going on in the world? Look no further... Fat Whack is the right kind of crazy to help you cope with these crazy times! 🍲😎 Filled with action, adventure, humour, mystery, mutants, vampires, ghosts and justice seeking ninjas! Sounds weird? 🤔 It is! But the good kind of weird! It's a rollercoaster ride that will make you read this story in one sitting and forget everything else. Not to mention that the murder-mystery aspect of the book will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who did it, how and why! And just when you think the story couldn't get any crazier and fast paced... comes book two to take you yet for another wild ride! 🤪🤘 Buckle up and pick up Fat Whack Book One, now with bonus art inside the book and an all new chapter about one of our dark characters! 🆕️
And then follow that with Books Two and Three to find out how the story ends! Thank you so much to Andrew Franks for sending me his books to read and review! 🤗 I loved these books, they were completely out of my 'comfort zone genres', but I loved every minute of reading these books, not to mention that the book has several bits of commentary and thoughts from the author about... food! And they made me laugh out loud! 😂 What are you waiting for? 𝐅𝐚𝐭 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚! 😎🍲📚🥋
First things first: I don't think this is going to be everybody's cup of tea. This said, the creativity that Franks pours into this story is undeniable. Starting like a jest towards those tele-sales promising to shed your weight with miraculous items; the ones where there's an overweight person in a black and white square that will turn into a fit, in technicolour individual, this story has a proper bone-structure, characters, conflicts and its fair share of twists. All accompanied with intermissions filled with the fattest recipe you could think of, which is sort of ironic in a book which follows the adventure of people fighting fat foods.
This story would look amazing as a graphic novels, so if you're an artist, contact its author Andrew Franks, muscle up and make it happen, please!
My one criticism is that at times it gets a bit corny, but then again it's part of the story and also I am a bit of a heartless sod, so maybe it's me. And in my opinion the author really missed a trick in not calling Dr. Dracula "Dr. Acula" instead.
That's it. If you're looking for something that out there and fun which will take your mind off troubles for a while, this is it.
This book is interesting with its twists and turns. I thought that I knew who the "Fat Master" was... NOPE.... I was way off... The characters and the stories come together in way I hadn't expected. The way the author used each character including animals within the book into other areas was smart. This book is thought provoking; its chapter/story title's make you look and wonder what to expect.
Written on the back of the book it says: "Fat Whack is a skinny story that is fat with drama". This statement is more than accurate.
It did not disappoint. I see the second book has been released, I will purchase it to see what is NEXT...
This book is not my usual type of book that I like to read. I’m glad I gave it a chance. It’s weird. It has weird recipes and side chapters that don’t make sense until the very last page, but when you read the last page it all makes sense. It had vampires and weight loss tips and demons and just about every other crazy thing you could think of. I can’t believe I liked it as much as I did. Give it a chance. You might not like it, but you also might like it a lot like me.
I’ve never been a huge fan of ninjas or weight loss, but Fat Whack is a clever story laced with action, humor, loss, suspense, and real life situations that any reader can relate to. I loved how thoughtfully the story was put together and how the dots connected as you progressed, finding myself flipping back to make sure I caught all of the details. It’s a heroic story that reminds us to do the right thing, and that good always prevails!
3 stars. Honestly, I can tell it was written by a first time author. That is not necessary a bad thing, everyone has to start somewhere. It just means giving this book five stars is a little much, even if you really enjoyed it. With that said, I gave it three stars for creativity. It’s a clever little story with a peculiar sense of humor. It surely won’t be for everyone, but it will probably find it’s niche audience.
What first attracted me to the book was the amazing cover art.
What kept me around was the author's unique approach and how the story played out.
The protagonist and antagonist are interesting and worth investing your time in it. There are a few twists and turns littered throughout to help keep you on your toes.
If you are looking for an action filled story, make sure to pick this one up.
This short book cooks up a delicious story that you can’t help but want a second helping of. I can’t wait for the sequel. I can’t believe how much world building took place in such a short amount of time. You feel like the author cut out all of the unnecessary stuff and just got down to business, and I appreciated it.
Ninja #5 is out to avenge his master who was wrongly accused of going mad and ordering his ninjas to kill people, before killing himself. This is a fast paced, fun read teens will love. It has numerous twists and unexpected plot turns. I truely enjoyed reading this book.
This book is different from anything that I've ever read before. The plot is original, the writing is fantastic, humorous and there is never a dull moment. It is a light-hearted and fun-filled read. I can't wait to see what happens in the second book!
Super Creative and original. Probably the most original story I've read in a long time! The end was over the top, but in a good way. The Fat Master is a very bad man.
