Half Earthling. Half Alien. 100% not ready for the adventure ahead!
Having parents from different planets doesn’t mean Zon has superpowers. If anything, he's a bit of a klutz.
With one clumsy mistake, he triggers open a portal to other worlds. A trip through this vortex sends him to Earth, where the first human he encounters is a girl with her own challenges.
Now, Zon must decide: save the girl, or keep his biggest secret—that he’s from a distant galaxy.
From USA TODAY bestselling author Maureen A. Miller's BEYOND series comes the new ZON mini-series. There is no need to read the BEYOND series. However, for readers of the series, you will enjoy this continuation of the epic science fiction adventure.
USA TODAY bestselling author Maureen A. Miller worked in the software industry for fifteen years. She crawled around plant floors in a hard hat and safety glasses, hooking up computers to behemoth manufacturing machines. The job required extensive travel. The best form of escapism during those lengthy airport layovers became writing.
Maureen’s first novel, Widow's TALE, earned her a Golden Heart nomination in Romantic Suspense. After that, she became hooked on the genre. As hooked as she was, childhood fantasies still danced around in her head––little voices calling for her to write the young adult science fiction BEYOND series. To her, it was still romantic suspense…just on another planet!
Maureen is a wife. A mother of a crazy Corgi. A lover of mozzarella. And she truly believes there is a portal to outer space somewhere in her house.
Maureen A. Miller is a new author for me and even though this is book 5 in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone.
Zon is an anomaly on his planet Ziratak. An outcast because his mother is from Earth and his father is a Ziratkian. Zon is eighteen in Earth years and is ready to travel and explore. So when he and his trusty sidekick, JOH, the quirky and hilarious android, end up secretly exploring a wormhole, their lives change forever.
Zon and JOH’s camaraderie is a big plus in this book. They’ve been together so long they can finish each other’s sentences. So when Zon falls for Cassy, the Earthling, JOH reluctantly follows suit. Zon is honorable and his growing attraction to Cassy propels him to try and save her even by forgoing his dreams of becoming a pilot. Cassy is an outcast herself and her quirkiness adds to her sweet personality and trust in Zon and JOH. As for Zon’s family including his parents, grandparents, and aunt and uncle, their closeness is felt throughout the story and makes me want to read the previous books in the series to find out more about them all.
Overall, this fast-paced scifi adventure was a pleasure to read with it’s sense of family, a budding young love, and hilarious banter between a young man and his android. Recommend highly!
Thank you to Ms. Miller for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
Zon is a stand alone book if you want it to be. However, if you like it you should definitely read the original Beyond series books 1-4. Zon is 17 years after the Beyond series, a story of a young man not quite finding his place to fit in and an alien on his own planet, the product of an Earthling and a Ziratakian. I cant wait to have Ms. Miller continue this series to see where the intergallactic travels take Zon. While this is a young adult series, I absolutely love the imagination in the books and would recommend them for any age. I won't go any further (because of spoilers) but this is a must read.I am going to go start it again.
Zon is not your usual teenager having an identity crisis—his crisis comes about because he’s what we used to call, very crudely and meanly, a half-breed and that’s how most people see him. What makes him truly different from the kids we see around us is that it is his Earthling side that’s foreign. Zon is the son of an Earth-born human and a native of the planet Ziratak. Zak and Aimee are handsome people and well-respected but Zon, unfortunately, is not seen in quite as generous a light.
Zon does have one very good friend, JOH, and the two are inseparable, JOH being an android who understands his young companion very well. JOH is a good listener and he helps Zon get through his angsty times. One day, the two discover a portal to other worlds, eventually one that happens to be Earth on a different plane, and Zon and JOH’s excellent adventure begins. Naturally, they meet a girl, Cassy, and Zon will have to make a crucial choice that will affect the rest of his life.
Zon is a charming, lighthearted science fiction tale with an appealing plot and truly likeable characters, most especially JOH and it’s refreshing to have a teenaged boy as the protagonist. Also, if I ever get to experience having an android for a friend, I hope he or she will be half as interesting and funny as JOH. 😄
ZON is a riveting, fast-paced book which incorporates Fantasy and Sci-Fi aspects into a wonderfully created young adult world.
This can be read as a standalone, but you will be wanting more from Maureen A. Miller and there are several other books in the series to satisfy your Sci-Fi needs.
Be prepared for an involved ride of a read, you will love these characters and this world.
*I received a copy from YA Bound Book Tours for my honest opinion*
This was a nice lighthearted YA Sci-Fi novel that is quick to read. I read it all in one sitting and found it to be delightful. It follows Zon as he is transported to Earth and becomes friends with a human girl who he later must save. At the same time, he is supposed to be practicing and getting ready for a big test that is coming up. Will Zon pass this test or will he sacrifice it to help his new friend?
I haven’t read the rest of the series, which is more about Zon’s mother and father, but I wasn’t confused at all. This definitely can be read as a standalone. The only problem I had with it was that I felt it could use more description and sometimes I was confused as to where exactly he was until another character came into the picture.
All in all, this was a nice read for those who like light-hearted YA Sci-Fi. If you need something to read on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I definitely recommend this book!
A great story, well written and with an "epic" feel about it. The characters are well described and thoroughly believable. Terrific plot line and gripping sub-plots.
If you enjoy engaging writing, characters that breathe from within the pages, and a story that will keep you guessing, then do yourself a favor and dive into this book. You'll be glad you did!
I was engrossed from start to finish. Highly recommended.
After reading, I am seriously mad at myself for not having found this series earlier. I definitely need to go back and read more. I loved this world that Marueen A. Miller created for us. It’s magical and full of life. The characters are so fun to read about. I loved them and their flaws and the journey they had. The writing is straight to the point. It’s descriptive, but not so much that it seems like fluff. I can’t wait to read more.
An OK book. SciFi is low key and not in your face. Main character is likable and relatable. Teen love story drives the plot, but there is no villain or real tension. Main problem is the unbelievably nice parents. The kid recklessly jumps through a portal to another planet and does not tell his parents. When they find out, they are not at all angry, no consequences?! Totally unbelievable. Author must not be a parent.
Zon is a halfling, half human and half alien. He finds a tunnel that takes him to Earth where he interacts with an ailing human girl. This is a sweet and sensitive story that most YA readers will thoroughly enjoy!
