5 years ago Chris left his best friend’s sister waiting for him at the church with all their family and their friends there and ran away. He didn’t tell anyone why he chickened out and left until now. Now after these years, he’s come back to make amends for what he did but not anyone is forgiving him easily…

Told in dual POV, 3rd person, it’s a standalone novella. It’s a friends-to-lovers story, the second chance romance and very low on angst. Their romance is a slow burn but the story itself is good-paced. Loved ALL the characters here, especially that adorable dog, Lucy! All in all, enjoyed this sweet story and hope you like it as well!

Okay, so let me recap this story a bit.

Chris left his girlfriend/fiancé Cally at the altar and ran away to Chicago where he hid for 5 years.
Now he comes back to get back in contact with his parents, his (now, of course) ex-girlfriend and her brother (Chris' best friend since childhood) Hunter.

From this point on, every character in this book reacts in a way that is the complete opposite of what I expected...

Cally, instead of wanting to shred him to pieces, suddenly becomes his BFF.

His parents, instead of being happy to see him back are like 'yeah, you still got your room over the garage, but we're renting it out now, so better sleep in the car."

And Hunter?

“Why are you here?”
Chris swallowed. “To see you. To make sure you’re okay.” To his own ears, it sounded pathetic.
Hunter gestured with his left hand to his body. “I’m fine. See? Goodbye.” And with that, he closed the door.

Yeah, enough said.

Also, the actual romance in this is so simple, it bordered on tragically boring...
Chris loved Hunter since forever.
Hunter loved Chris since forever.

The dramatic climax is both guys not speaking about how they loved each other since forever.

Oh, yes, and there is a bit of PTSD in there too, because you know there is.

And if you need more excitement after all this, you may witness a birth scene here too...

“It’s a beautiful little girl,” the doctor called out. “Just delivering the placenta now, then we’ll lie you down and bring her to you.”

All in all, I just don't know what to think about these characters. I didn't grow to like them, didn't find them relatable and also wasn't really pining for them as a couple.

I was in such a mood for something sweet, and K.C. Wells’ Here For You was just the ticket. A slow burn, hurt/comfort romance, with a hard won (and very satisfying) happily ever after, Here For You includes some interesting family dynamics and a truly terrific dog.

For me, the best part of this story is the depth K.C. Wells goes in exploring these characters. The guilt Chris has lived with after leaving his fiancée at the altar, abandoning his friends and family, and moving across the country has really done a number on him. Chris has been unable to establish any deep relationships and instead focused on his career training rescue dogs.

Hiding the truth of his love for his best friend, Hunter has lived with feelings of guilt and shame. After a traumatic event, Hunter’s struggling with PTSD and depression, and has closed himself off from family and friends.

I know this all sounds pretty heavy, but Ms. Wells keeps the mood hopeful and uplifting. The characters are pretty open about their feelings, and the supporting cast is colorful, kind, and helpful. Filled with plenty of feel good moments, Here For You is a real feel-good romance.

Recently released on audio, John Solo delivers a wonderful performance. There’s a whole range of emotions in this story and Mr. Solo makes the most of it.

What a pleasant surprise, I saw the dog on the cover and liked the blurb, but honestly I didn't expect too much, and I got more than I expected. This was really a beautiful story about Chris, returning to his hometown which he left when he got cold feet on his wedding day. The reason for his return is Hunter, brother of the bride and former best friend and secret crush of Chris.
When Chris learns that Hunter, working as a firefighter had an accident he returns after 5 years away to make sure Hunter is okay.
Their journey was fun to read, sometimes difficult but it felt real and I enjoyed it a lot.
If I have a small complaint it is that at the end it dragged a little, we already had our happy end more out less and it could have ended sooner, or maybe an epilog would have been a better idea, but that is just a small thing, overall this was a beautiful and lovely story, 4 stars for me!

This wasn’t for me I’m afraid! Chris Lomax returns home, wanting to make amends after jilting his fiancé at the altar - he’d realised he was in love with her brother (his childhood friend, Hunter). May be my expectations were unrealistic. I was just expecting a lot more angst. Not even the loveable Lucy, a rather perceptive Golden Retriever and the one highlight in this story, could change my mind.

The reactions of some of the secondary characters, seemed off to me. Chris hasn’t seen his parents in five years and his return is met with a lukewarm reception. On his arrival, he’s promised a bed for the night at their B&B until they rent his room out to a guest, which in effect leaves him with nowhere to stay. They haven’t seen him in five years!!! Whereas, he is welcomed with open arms by his jilted bride Cally, who is now married and heavily pregnant. Her parents quickly forgive him. You’d think at least that they would be asking for some kind of financial reimbursement for the wedding that never was. Cally even names her baby daughter after Chris’s boss who she’s never met. Don’t even get me started on Hunter and his situation.

There was just zero chemistry between this duo. I couldn’t connect with them at all. It’s quite the slow burn - nothing really happening until ~80%. Usually, I would love this, but not this time. Coupled with the very rushed ending and lack of epilogue, this proved to be an underwhelming read.

**May contain some spoilers**

Loved the book, specially because it hits a little too close to home for me. There was a time I too got engaged with a girl trying desperately to just be normal and make my father proud and forget those other feelings I had... got the blessing from both our families and all... and in the end I couldn't do it. I broke things off. So yeah, I kinda had some flashbacks of my own while reading Chris's story.

The other thing is, male depression, and depression in general, is a very serious and important thing, something I've been going through pretty much from the time I was 12 or 13 years old. So watching Hunter struggling with depression, hiding your sexuality, heavy feelings of guilt, and add his PTSD to the mix... it hit close, a bit too close.

The book didn't get too heavy into the whole issue, I think mainly because it was meant to be a short novel and the main point was their relationship. But what little was addressed in the novel, was very well done.

Chris and Hunter's relationship was a bumpy road, but it was beautiful and worth it. Loved how they supported one another, and loved the way their families had their backs, no matter what.

The only thing I didn't like was that yet again, seems to happen too often in many books lately... the ending seemed a bit too rushed! Why?
At the very least a good epilogue would have been nice. But anyway... hopefully the author can bring them back for a future story someday.

Chris & Hunter

Fazit: Lesenswert

I totally understood Hunter’s animosity towards Chris. And although Chris was ever so patient and supportive there was “something” missing. I think it’s a serious case of “it’s me, not you”. Because on paper I should have rated this 5 stars.

A sweet, former best friends to lovers story that also deals with some serious issues. This is definitely a slow burn as Chris and Hunter have to deal with the hurt Chris caused in the past as well as Hunter's recovery from a serious injury and his dealing with his secrets he's been keeping about his sexuality and his feelings for Chris.

Their path to a HEA is not easy. Both men have issues and while they don't overwhelm the story there is a lot to deal with and some minor angst and drama. Everyone will fall in love with Chris's dog Lucy and Hunter's sister - Chris's ex-fiancee - plays a surprising role as well.

If you want a wonderful slow burn read with aspects of hurt-comfort, friends to lovers, supportive friends and family and a sweet romance, take a chance on this one.

This story just didn't grab me. Everything fell into place too easily considering what happened. Cally, Chris' parents, Hunter's parents all were fine even though it took Chris five years to come back. Hard to believe there was not more resentment, mixed feelings etc. Also Chris bailed again and not until his boss pushed him did he finally take some decisive action. I did feel bad for Hunter's struggles and I'm glad they got together.

Oh, wow, did I love this book! Chris is the boy who left town (jilted his fiancée at the altar, no less) and has come back, and Hunter is the friend he left behind (brother of the deserted bride, of course). And if that isn't tropey enough, and in second chances, regret and lost love (in more than one way), two-sided unrequited love, friends-to-enemies-to-lovers. All the tropes, and KC Wells hits them out of the park as well as tackling serious issues such as PTSD in a realistic way. This one was low on the heat but high on the emotion, and Chris and Hunter's journey, though angsty and not the easiest, was a wonderful read, and man, did they earn that HEA. My one niggle, and it's a small one, was that I felt the ending was a bit abrupt; I wanted that epilogue, wanted a bit more.

Honorable mention to the ex-turned-best-friend-and-savior, and to Lucy, who just might be the coolest German shepherd ever! A wonderful story that showcases friendship, family, and love, this is one of my favorite reads from KC.

A beautiful, slow-burn friends-to-lovers story that meanders along deceptively mellow and laidback, but in the end will grab at your heart in the best way. Here For You is an enjoyable read that shows us love in its purest form, relying very much on the strong basis of friendship and being there for each other when things are everything but easy, and far less so on passion as a crutch for the story. This one’s low heat, but definitely high on emotion and very sweet.

Chris and Hunter both have regrets when it comes to the other and carry around big secrets. For all that they’ve been lifelong friends, they are in the dark about certain things, and not as different as they imagine. I loved seeing them grow throughout the story. The secondary characters are wonderful, and some of them larger than life. Yes, Cally, I’m talking about you ;-) And of course, I can’t forget to mention Lucy, who is just too adorable, we all want a Lucy in our lives! The parents, on both sides, are refreshingly loving and supportive, and just gave me all the feels.

In between the lines and cushioned by the warmth of family and friends uniting behind Chris and Hunter, there’s an important lesson the author tries to get through, in a subtle and well-balanced way, with regards to trauma and being brave enough to seek help when you need it. No problem is ever solved by running away from it or ignoring it.

Sweet. Light on angst. It was also a pleasant change to see a coming out story filled with accepting family members. My only quibble is that the plot felt sort of rushed in places and an epilogue would have been nice.

Sweet romance.
Best friends since childhood, until one left.
Chris and Hunter were close as brothers until Chris decided to marry Calle. However, knowing his feelings for Hunter he left her at the later.

Lovely story how they found their friend and forgiveness.

This was a simple easy little story about confusion and unrequited love. I have to say Lucy the dog sure really was a star. That’s the dog I want, please, oh please.
The story was fine.
The characters were fine.
It was just kind of bland. Bland but not numbing. My big shock was the end. It was so jarring I was put completely off. I waited 24 hours to write this and I still feel like what the heck?!?! That’s the end? Just done!

6/19/20 Edited to add my comments on the audiobook.
Story: 5 stars
Performance: 5 stars

I loved the book, now I love the audiobook!

I loved this book so much when I read it and when I found out that John Solo would be performing it, I couldn't wait to listen to it. I probably sound like a broken record but I really love the audiobooks I've listened to that John has done. He is in my top five favorite audiobook performers. He brings so much emotion to the characters in this story. I listened to whole thing straight through while I worked around the house. John Solo and K.C. Wells are a fantastic combination!

Below is what I wrote about the book when I read it back in April, 2020.

Three of my favorite tropes in one story!

Here for You is a sweet, slow burn story about second chances. It features three of my favorite romance tropes: second chances, friends-to-lovers and gay-for-you/out-for-you.

Chris and Hunter were best friends growing up and Chris was supposed to marry Hunter's sister, Cally. No one knows why Chris left Cally at the altar or why he ran away and left town. It's five years later and Chris has returned because he heard that Hunter was injured fighting a fire; he had to see for himself that Hunter was OK.

Hunter isn't happy to see Chris; he'd never really forgiven him for leaving town the way he did – with no explanation. His feelings are all mixed up and coping with the after-effects of the fire and Chris being in his space aren't helping him any.

This story got me right in the feels. Chris really wants to make amends for leaving town the way he did. His parents don't give him too much of a hard time and, much to his surprise, neither does Cally. Hunter is the only one he cares about that still won't let him apologize. Seeing these two struggle to come to terms with everything going on in their lives was at times heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting.

Chris's dog Lucy was a huge part of this story. She can sense when she's needed and she provides a lot of comfort, especially to Hunter. I know someone with a service dog like this and it's amazing what her dog can do to help so I knew that Lucy's role in the story was spot on.

A copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

A nice romance that is super slow burn, so slow that 80% of the story goes by before the characters act on it. That's not bad though. It fits with the hurt-comfort theme and any sooner wouldn't have made sense.

The characters are great and the story, which includes a golden retriever therapy dog (Yay!), tells of lost love and friends reunited. They get to discover that their attraction to each other was not one-sided, and Chris learns that not everyone in town holds a grudge against him for the way he left five years before.

If you enjoy a nice story that's not riddled with meaningless sex, you should definitely enjoy this one.

Wonderful Story & Listen🎧 Enthralling & Heartfelt!

Here for You
By: K.C. Wells
Narrated by: John Solo

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful story, it captured both my attention and my heart from start to end. K.C. Wells is a gifted author, her storylines and characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with. I love her ability to bring you along side the characters allowing you to see what they see and feel what they feel. I adored the two lead character Chris Lomax and Hunter Drake, secondary characters were pretty awesome too, a great support cast. Chris left town after leaving Cally, his intended bride at the alter. Chris could not go through the wedding, he broke Calla’s heart and pissed off her family, including her brother Hunter, who was his best friend and in love with. Chris, an established service dog trainer saw in the news that Hunter, a firefighter was injured during a fire and rescue. He needed to see him, he took his dog Lucy with him and returned to his hometown. He has not been home and needed to make amends with those he hurt when he left so abruptly. Hunter was not that happy to see him but he was dealing with a lot. Chris has a surprising ally who helped him get back in Hunters life. Everyone could use such an admirable person in their life, one who forgives and looks out for their loved ones. I loved how everything plays out in this book, the story is beautifully plotted and there is never a dull moment. There is plenty of drama, angst, lots of heartfelt and emotional moments and a great friends to lovers second chance romance. K.C. does a great job raising awareness about mental health, PTSD, guilt, depression and mentions suicide, she handles it with care while keep it all real. Thank you for this wonderful story and the emotional rollercoaster ride.

I listened to the Audible edition, John Solo is a talent narrator and voice artist. He is perfectly casted to bring these characters to life, humanize them, giving each their own voice and personality. His portrayal of each character is perfection, making them sound just as I picture them to sound. You could hear how much heart he puts into his work as he captures the characters emotions, their vulnerabilities which is heard in his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another wonderful listen🎧

KC Wells' Here For You is a great friends to lovers romance.

Chris returns home after hurting hearts years ago. Back to check on his former best friend, Hunter, he's also here to make amends. What follows is a tender tale of surprises and confessions.

This is a story of repressed feelings, second chances, and a slew of emotions. It's a story of help, encouragement, pride, forgiveness and regret.

There are some fantastic secondary characters, including Cally, the woman who Chris left at the altar. She's a breath of fresh air, adding tremendously to this story. I love her and am so happy to find a character like her. There's also Lucy, some supportive parents and a precious dog.

The writing is wonderful, with likable, multi-layered characters. The pace is great, with a slow connection that builds up nicely to a burn. Although some aspects of the story are heavy, the author manages to explore everything in a pleasant manner.

And then there's Hunter's PTSD, which is handled with care and compassion. I appreciate the way the author approaches this issue in a subtle manner. It's a nice surprise. We all know the struggle to ask for or accept help, so I enjoy the way this is explored.

Here For You is classic KC Wells; a must read if you are a fan of her books. This slow burn romance is beautifully developed, leaving the reader invested throughout. A great mix of sweetness, healing, forgiveness, and love, it's perfect when you're in the mood for a nice, easy read.

Lovely simple love story (an audio review)

Sometimes, amongst all the angst these days, a simple love story is just what I’m looking for. And at the heart of this book lies a love story.

Chris left his bride Calleigh at the alter, abandoning his life and moving away without giving anyone a forwarding address. His reason? Although he cared for Calleigh, he was in love with her brother. Knowing he would see Hunter day after day but not be able to have him was too much to bear, so he left.

Five years later, tragedy strikes Hunter and Chris feels compelled to return. He brings his dog Lucy. Chris is a service dog trainer and he fell in love with Lucy so she never formally graduated. But she’s as empathetic and smart as any working dog, and she goes to work on Hunter. Maybe if Chris can’t break down Hunter’s walls, Lucy might be able to.

Chris wants Hunter to forgive him and Hunter wants Chris to leave him alone. Plenty of conflict there. And although both men are stubborn, cracks in the walls appear. There are heavier themes in this book but they are handled brilliantly, as I would expect Ms. Wells to do. Her books always deliver an emotional story with a deft touch and this book is no exception.

John Solo narrates many of Ms. Wells’ books and I’m so pleased because he does a great job of bringing these characters to life. So if you’re looking for a simple and true love story, this just might be the book for you.

KC Wells is an auto buy author for me, whether it’s the Collars & Cuffs/Secrets series or her sweeter reads with less heat. This quickly joined BFF as one of my favourites.
The story starts with Chris returning to his hometown and facing people he had not seen for 5 years when he stood his girlfriend up at the alter. This includes his parents, his former girlfriend Cally and her brother Hunter - former best friend. It quickly becomes clear that Hunter is going to be his hardest challenge, not least because he has his own issues to face, both stemming from an accident at work and due to his unrecognised feelings for Chris.
I loved that the focus of this book was Chris & Hunter (sometimes painfully) becoming close again and Hunter learning to trust Chris, the pace was just right with no immediate fix or cure for their issues.
This is lower on the heat scale if I was to rate it for that, but there is lots of love and affection and it leaves you with warm fuzzies, which is what we need at the moment. Loved the supporting characters of the parents, Cally and especially Lucy. Would recommend it for anyone wanting a feel good read, with minimal trauma - don’t get me wrong, they have issues to face and obstacles to overcome, but it’s nice not too read anything too dark at the moment.
Another great read from this author.

KC Wells is one of my favourite authors when it comes to a sweet, slow burn romance. Here for you sees Chris return to town several years after leaving his best friend's sister at the alter. Unfortunately he left his heart with Hunter, not Callie as everyone would have thought. On his return to town there are surprises in store with how his parents and Callie react to him and revelations about himself. The one man he wants to reconnect with makes is hard for him but it's oh so worth it in the end.
The is a lot of emotion going on throughout the story for both men - guilt, fear, relief, love. As well as dealing with Chris's return, Hunter is dealing with the physical and mental aftermath of a rescue during his job as a firefighter. The writing really shines a light on mental health and men's perceptions on how they should deal with what they are feeling.
I love all of the characters involved in this book but a special place is held for Lucy, Chris's beautiful golden retriever who is so aware and helpful to those around her, and Callie, Hunter's sister. She has a remarkable outlook on everything that has gone on and plays an important role in how things pan out for Chris especially, on his return to town.
Definitely a recommended read!
