City Dragons #3

Dragon's Tears

Rate this book
Byron Hollingsworth was an emotional wreck and after ranting at his younger brother Samuel, and calling his brother's impending offspring an abomination, now everyone else knew how unstable Byron was too. It’s not as though he hadn’t tried to be the perfect son, brother, and cousin. He tried to keep his affliction hidden from others. But the painful truth was now out for everyone to see – Byron ached for the mate he’d seen once more than ten years before and that loss had affected every area of his life. And then, just when he thought things couldn’t get any worse, someone delivers a package to Byron’s house that changes the course of his entire life.

Ivak Sellivik, bastard son of the Ice Dragon King, was known as “Ice” for good reason. Heartless, ruthless, and dangerous, he traveled the world, focusing on the important things in life like making money and ridding the world of paranormal criminals. He knew he had a fated mate – he’d even seen him once. However, meeting his fated mate face to face was something he could do after he retired, and he told himself he was happy to wait until then. That was, until he gets a frantic call from his brother.

Sometimes plans need to be flexible and a person has to understand that wants and needs are two different things. When Byron gets taken, Ice must decide if he wants a mate in his life at all, or risk losing his forever. But he has to decide quickly, because his enemies are closing in on all sides, and Byron’s not the only one in their sights. Throw in a summons from the Ice Dragon King and things get really hectic. Will Ice and Byron have time for an HEA, even if they do decide to try for one together?

Dragon’s Tears is an MM fated mates, mpreg story that includes scenes of violence and intimate acts intended for adults only.

Byron was not a favorite of mine and I wondered how Ms Oliver was going to make him likable. She succeeded admirably. The brother who was never understood, the son who was never seen, the man who was overwhelmed and the dragon who was suppressed - it all compounded to Byron being defensive insufferable person. But finally getting it all out in the open allowed him to breathe, let go and start to heal.

Ivak is a new character, the ice dragon. The author provided solid background to see where he and his hair-brained ideas were coming from. Unloved from birth, unacknowledged by his peers, Ivak toughens his skin and closes off his heart. It takes time and the love of his mate to warm the eternal winter of his mind and soul.

I loved their interactions, the traditions of the Ice court and how both men were supportive of each other, once they both pulled their heads out of their collective a$$e$. I am glad that the author chose to make the men talk in the end instead of running amok misunderstood. The story was fast paced with plenty of action, danger, moderate amount of steam and so much love, which is what her stories are most known for. I enjoyed it immensely. Another wonderful story!

Loved it

I had been looking forward to Byron's story since book 1 and it didn't disappoint.

Away from everyone, especially his father and under all that prickly exterior, Byron is good, loving man with principles.

Ivak I could have shaken at the beginning, but then you realise why he is so cold and everything falls into place.

I loved the plot it was very interesting and fast paced.

The relationship between them was lovely and hot once they get over themselves

While I liked Byron and Ice, I didn’t love them. Ice was constantly messing up and still putting himself first. I get it, things won’t change overnight but it’s still annoying. Then I was so happy when Byron flew away and was mad at Ice and his dragon told him to make ice work for it, but then an emotionally draining scene occurs and he’s vulnerable and there was no making him work for it. I think Ice gets let off the hook too much and I didn’t think this relationship was balanced. He said all the right things (eventually) but I didn’t feel them.

All that to say, I liked the book and listened to it pretty much continuously but it didn’t leave me with a smile on my face, just blah.

Steam: low

Going into his book, I wasn’t sure how the author was going to redeem Byron. Turns out the author did a pretty good job of making him a sympathetic character in this book. Right from the start I felt sympathy for him and wanted him to get his HEA with his mate. What I didn’t expect was my instant dislike of Ice/Ivak. To say I hated him as a character throughout most of the book is an understatement. I kept having to put down the book because I just couldn’t stand reading about him for more than a little bit at a time. I did persevere and by the end of the book, I did warm up to Ivak a bit more. So overall, there were parts of the book that I hated and parts that I really liked, and I will definitely read more of this series in the future.

Better than I thought

3.75 Stars

I went into this one with low expectations. After the previous books I really didn’t care about Byron at all so I was pleasantly surprised when Ms Oliver had me sympathetic towards him within the first couple of chapters.

My problem with this book laid purely with Ice/Ivak and at the half way mark when I was majorly hating him I quickly checked my friends review as we generally agree on things to make sure I wasn’t going mad, luckily for me she also agreed.

I know he has the name Ice but he was just so cold and uncaring. He did kind of redeem himself by the end but not fully to my mind.

This book also felt a bit more vicious in the way the dragons within the court all treated each other, but at the same time I enjoyed seeing the Hollingsworth clan and the repair of the bonds between the brothers.

I still want the cousins books hopefully they are next

As much as I hated Byron in the other books I actually liked how he turned out in his own book and as much as I know that he flipped flopped wildly to be able to go from giant ass to tortured lovable MC, his breakdown on the balcony made me tear up T.T

I liked Ivak a lot once he got a personality implant. In the beginning I was sure I was not going to like this couple considering how awful he is in the 1/3 of the book but his complete 180 behaviour wise worked for me in a trashy goodness kind of way x)

The audiobook was extremely good as always!

Petrov was bae and I would have liked more on him and David.

I feel like I was waiting forever to get my hands on the 3rd City of Dragons book by Lisa Oliver. Bryon, the asshole middle brother, did not really endear himself to me throughout books 1 and 2 so I wanted to see how Oliver was going to get me to actually root for him to find love. I shouldn’t have worried a bit cause she pulled it off just fine. Byron is a complicated fire dragon who has been put in many a tough position by his scheming horrible father. He grew up with prejudices thrown at him every which way, so it has taken him some time to come to realize he was small minded and that he is in charge of choosing his own thoughts and actions.

Funnily enough, Byron’s fated mate is known as Ice for his ice dragon status and downright icy personality. The man trusts no one. He doesn’t even trust his cousin Petrov, whom conveniently has been working at the Hollingsworth company for years now. To be more precise, he has been there for 5 years which is also the amount of time Ice has known about his fated mate. Being the rough and tumble assassin that he is, Ice decides he is going to wait until retirement to make himself known to his mate. He is far to busy to have to coddle a pencil pushing dragon like Byron.

Pencil pusher and Byron do not belong in the same sentence which Ice soon finds out himself when Byron is kidnapped in a plot to draw Ice out. It calmed my angry heart to have Byron give Ice a piece of his mind when he found out how long the man has known his whereabouts. Serves him right the selfish dick! Petrov’s ” I told you so ” was the icing on the cake.

Plenty of drama ensues when Bryon and Ice decide to find the man responsible for trying to draw Ice to kill him which leads them to the Ice Dragon castle. Not all is as it appears and plenty of political maneuvering and well..assassinations have to happy before Bryon and Ice can really start their HEA.

Suffering from middle-child syndrome, fire-dragon shifter Bryon Hollingsworth is disillusioned after watching both his brothers take non-dragon fated mates—brought up to be a purist, he doesn’t know whether to be jealous or revolted. Byron doesn’t realise his own mixed-species fated mate has spent years avoiding him. Ivak ‘Ice’ Sellivik is the illegitimate son of the Ice Dragon King, he’s never been welcome in the royal court and he spends his life as a lonely but ruthless assassin. He realises his folly when Byron is kidnapped and left to die. Once united, Byron and Ice struggle to make things work but neither has had any practice with relationships and the royal court doesn’t make things any easier.

I’ve mostly enjoyed this MPREG / PNR series: the fast-paced plots, the creative world-build, and the ‘embrace diversity’ messaging. I especially liked the fact that hybrid shifters can take the form of both parent’s shifted animal and that shifted animals are spiritual beings in their own right in a different plane that can interact with each other and with the shifter they’re attached to. This is a redemption story for both Byron and Ice and some readers will struggle to like them. I didn’t mind them but I did struggled with the dialogue, which I found too casual or silly at times. I also struggled with John York’s audio performance. It’s ok but he regularly mispronounces words and maybe it’s his tone I find too casual.

Even though I went into this read not sure how I felt about Byron (who I kept calling Bryson in my head, no clue why), as I thought he was a "bad" guy before, but then I felt he may have had understandable reasoning for his actions, so I wanted to keep an open mind and I wasn't disappointed! As for Ice/Ivak, it was a bit harder because he was new to the series and I didn't know what to expect. After much cursing under my breath and metaphorical head-bashing, these two finally got their act together and the story got REALLY interesting, REALLY fast! *grin*

I think I am drawn to bad guys gone good... and that leads me to appreciate some of the more violent scenes in the book! Justice can be whatever the author wants it to be in fiction, and I found Byron and Ivak's idea of justice quite refreshing! ;D

Strangely enough, by the end of the book I realized that this was by far my favorite of the series! Not to say that it might not lose out to a future book, but for now this one ranks high in my top whatever list!

I've been wondering how Byron's book was going to go since book 1 and I was surprised how likeable she made him. He redeemed himself from book 1 and I was really rooting for him. Ice though, I am conflicted on. I spent 3/4ths of the book disliking him. He lives up to his name. He is cold and unfeeling. Byron was kidnapped and he didn't care. This is his true mate and nothing. Yes, eventually he felt something but he was so cut off that a true threat to his mate was only scary when his brother beat him over the head with it and threatened to take his mate from him. Over and over, he lived up to not caring about his mate. I understand he had a hard life where no one showed him love but his brother. Problem is, it's hard to connect with a character if all you know are their bad traits. I got to know Byron but I only got a glimpse of who Ivak is the last 1/4 of the book when he stopped being an a**hole. I liked the book but I am conflicted on Ivak. The epilogue was really sweet and *that* Ivak is really lovable. I wish I saw more of him.

Ice is a heartless bastard even by his own admission. He's known who his fated mate is for five years but is refusing to claim him until he retires. Byron caught sight of Ice first over 10 years ago but never got close enough to confirm that he was his mate, but he's been searching for him ever since. Ice managed to get his half brother on staff with the Hollingsworth companies to watch over and protect his mate. Byron has denied himself any physical intimacy waiting to find his true mate. He's also slowly overcoming the prejudices instilled by his late father and in the process has insulted his younger brother and the child he bears. When Petrov calls Ice about direct threats made against Byron, Ice is forced to come to New York and the two finally meet and initiate their mating. Ice (Ivak) is the illegitimate son of the Ice Dragon King and his only heir. The threats against Byron escalate but seem to be directed towards Ivak. Will Ivak be able to stop the attacks on his mate? Will he be accepted as the heir to the throne? Will his heart finally melt? Another non stop read.

A most satisfying book

Byron has been a very uptight, unlikable dragon in the two previous books that centered on first his older then his younger brother finding their fated mates. We find out why he acts the way he does when he finally meets his fated mate although things don't work out the way he envisioned mated life. His mate, is both an assassin and the heir of Ice Dragon King and he is in serious danger and so is Byron who is kidnapped and left to die in a glass coffin. Things get complicated fast and Byron has to adjust to an ice cold mate who claims and then leaves him. The animal halves of these two men are having none of this and get them working together to deal with their enemies. A very wonderful story with a real twist in who gets pregnant. I loved this story and am so happy there will be more books in this series.

Amazing series

Amazing series books 1-3 these books are worth your money and time spent enjoying them. They’re wonderful and realistic. They express the fast intensity of love but also a realistic way of explaining the insecurities and challenges of a fast paced love connection. I’m not the biggest fan of mpreg. Probably cause I’m Uber jealous and my husband and I would love kids. However it was done in a magical way and not the typical way which made it completely realistic and wonderful. Love his series bought each one! Support our wonderful Author Community especially the LGBTQ 🏳️‍🌈 they help so much in the manner they express how normal and limitless our community can be. All while being devoted to love in all of its forms. Phenomenal work to the author I humbly bow at your beautiful pencraft xo

So, so good!

Lisa has done a fabulous job of redeeming Byron Hollingsworth and making you fall in love with him. It didn't seem possible after his previous actions but it was so well done.

Ice definitely lived up to his name until he was made to pull his finger out of his ar$e. His upbringing was just as bad as Byron's and none of us really knows what another has to endure but our mettle is borne of these challenges.

This was very violent and gruesome and necessary to the story but all deserving and makes for an excellent read and I loved Byron's wit, especially in relation to the machetes. 🤣🤣🤣

I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more about Princess Clara in due course.

Happy reading!

Another sweet Dragon Romance

Oh, I so wanted to kick Ice’s ass a few times, and Byron’s too... but it worked out in the end. There is cleverness and forthought in this couple and I think they perfectly match each other in strengths and flaws. I really like this series and I’m looking forward to reading about these dragons, and maybe others. I love how the dragons in this series are actually a separate entity from their human selves and mouth off to their stupid, stubborn, human sides. I simply adore the dragons themselves and look forward to meeting more of these wonderful, powerful, strong willed creatures!

This was an unusual purchase for me. Not only had I not read any of Ms Oliver’s books before, but this is the 3rd book in a series.

However, the synopsis sounded interesting, and though I read and like Urban Fantasy and books involving MM relationships, I had not read of any with mpreg storylines. So at .99p I thought I would give it a go.

I must say, that I am glad that I did. It is a fairly ‘light story’ with very little long-drawn-out angst. I liked both Ice (Ivak) and Byron a lot, though I could cheerfully have kicked Ice’s ass a couple of times because of his initial attitude. But thankfully this only lasts for a short time, before they both decide that they need to be clear with what they want/need.

Pure magic!

This is the third book in this amazing series and the action, adventure , surprises and love have not diminished one little bit! Lisa Oliver is a true master of her craft. I loved how Byron and Ice grew not only together as a couple, but as people as well.
If you have not yet had the pleasure of reading one of Lisa’s books, this series is a wonderful way to get acquainted.
She is always a one click for me!

As you all know I am a big Lisa Oliver fan. I also love Dragon Shifter stories.

I was not a big fan of this.

I found both MCs to be tedious and awful almost to the point of not being able to finish this.

I could not understand their motivations and never did reconcile Ice’s ability to avoid the mating pull for 5 years.

I enjoyed the world building and if you’re a fan of the author/genre and you read the first books in the series you might be interested in this.

I loved this book because it went so in depth about how we’re raised shapes us and colors our relationships as adult. Needless to say this is not your ordinary shifter romance. If all these guys had to deal with was outside opponents that would make it easy. No, Byron and Ivak (Ice) really have to work for this. Definitely a read you don’t want to miss!!

If you need something to make you feel a little better in these uncertain times, this series is a wonderful thing to read. Lisa Oliver has a way of serving comfort with her words, no matter what the story. The writing is strong, the story wonderful and I love every one of those dragons. May there be many more because this isn't the last of the series!

I 've been waiting so long for Bryon's story. It was definitely worth the wait. There were so many unexpected twists and turns that my head was spinning....in a good way. Great addition to the series and I will patiently wait for the next book, plus I want to see Clara's presentation.

Amazing

Can't wait for the next in the series.
The unapologetic way that Ivak goes about his killings and decrees is refreshing and amusing all in one. I love that he was the one to have such profound changes. Hopefully, Byron will be next in the (hopefully) upcoming books.
I can't wait!

I hated Ice for pretty much the entire book. He was beyond an asshole. When he was able to continue to sleep around even while knowing Byron was his mate I knew I would never like him. Then he had a personality transplant after a Byron claimed him. Strange. I actually think Dirk/Jon are my favorites from this series
