From Baskets and Seaform to Chandeliers and Towers, this 176 page book features subsections dedicated to many of Chihuly’s series including a dynamic pictorial chronology documenting the development and history of Chihuly’s most popular glass series.
Dale Chihuly is considered one of the most innovative and iconic figures in contemporary art. Chihuly has been working with glass as an artistic medium for nearly fifty years, to increasing critical and popular acclaim. His solo exhibition venues have included the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the de Young Museums, San Francisco; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. His work is in the permanent collections of more than 200 museums worldwide.
I was introduced to Chihuly’s work by a friend who went to an outdoor New York exhibition of his and send me a bunch of photos: looking at just the photos made me feel happy – can’t wait for the summer 2008 exhibition in San Francisco where I live.
This is an interesting book for Chihuly fans because of the photos of his work and excellent biographical information. There are many wonderful (often full page) color photographs of his work and exemplary notes before each section: by Chihuly himself (the most interesting) and others who know his work, which make this a special book.
There’s a good representative showing of his various series: Ice & Neon (he works mostly in glass but works with ice, water, plastic also), Cylinders, Baskets, Seaforms, Macchia, Persians, Venetians, Ikebanna, Niijima Floats, Chandeliers, Reeds, Towers, Jerusalem Cylinders, Fiori, and Installations. There’s a list of museums where his work appears in the back of the book.
The main downside of the photos in this book is that Chihuly’s work is at its most impressive when many pieces can be viewed as a whole, either in a room or an outdoor setting. While there’s a taste of that here, most of the photos are of one or only a few pieces. There’s not the same sense of awe as when viewing an entire exhibit, but doubt that any Chihuly book could be as amazing as being present at a Chihuly actual exhibition. Although I would like to check out some other books showing his art.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves and appreciates the beauty of a Chihuly work of art. The book provides both the informative aspect as well as exquisitely colorful photographic images of his exhibitions.
