"I became an actress like Mom. My role was waiting."

Tamako seems to be maturing and beginning to understand that others have issues to work through. Not just her. Her problems aren't inconsequential, but they are definitely on a lesser scale (as in the whole ANGST stuff).

It's still a wtf series because it's so over the top, the heroine is 14 and her love interest is a 17 year old high school dude who really likes to dress up little girls for some odd reason.....

Idk, I'll just finish the last two but so far I don't think this series is anything to beg your friends to read. No matter how much they love shoujo.

Which stinks because there's potential but it's not being used.

*I own all the manga I read/review and don't support scans.

This volume is slightly better than the first. The heroine is a bit calmer and less monkey-like and obsessive. The main manga takes up only a little over half the book, and the rest is filled out with two shorts. The main story is about a girl obsessed with becoming the wife of an older teen boy because when she was a toddler, he said he’d marry her to get her to stop crying. He’s almost twice her height and much more mature. Her goal in life is to become good enough for him, so not exactly a feminist book. But it’s saved from being distasteful by the fact that he never acts like she isn’t good enough, it’s all in her head. He just treats her like a little sister.

The shorts show a common theme in the author’s work of petite young girls falling for older, mature, indifferent guys. The first short is about a petite girl who falls for a really big guy, who likes her but is afraid of physically hurting her due to their size difference. The other short is about a 15-year-old girl living with her 25-year-old stepfather (he was 18 when he married her mother, who died 2 years later). They look almost identical to the characters in the main manga and were the inspiration for those characters. The dynamic between them is also very similar. It seems to be a family love, that is going to evolve into romantic love. It doesn’t come across as creepy, but the concept is disturbing.

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE SERIES

Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Romantic Comedy
Content Rating: Teen (some brief sensuality, rambunctious behavior)
Format Read: Paperback (own)

Pearl Pink is a four-volume contemporary rom-com series about a rambunctious girl who becomes an actress to win the heart of the agent boy she loves. At just four volumes the story only covers her start on the road to stardom and how they fall in love, but it's a sweet, humorous romance with an interesting peek into the Japanese entertainment industry. As one of Meca Tanaka's earlier works (she's better known in the US for Meteor Prince and The Young Master's Revenge) the art can be a little sketchy at times, but the playful action is fun and her character expressions are strong. Overall it's a cute, quick story of love, family, and determination with a charming romance, energetic characters, and an adorable if plot-pointless monkey mascot. Definitely recommend for rom-com readers and Skip*Beat! fans.

Bonus Stories: Volume 2 includes two bonus one-shots. "Destined Lovers" is a cute short about a small girl and a large boy who fall in love and the problems that naturally ensue. "Diamond Half" is, according to the author, about the characters Tamako and Kanji are based on, and is a sweet story of family and how love can change as it ages.

I don’t don’t know why I gave this vol 4 stars in 2013 when it should be clearly 3. This comes to show that rating is subjected to many factors that influence you at the time you read a book. It also makes me think I was more innocent before 😂☹️

I feel that the pace didn’t move fast enough. We don’t see any romance blossoms until the end, and the interactions have almost non-existent. Like how are they falling in love? Just from the memory of 10 years ago?

Also Kanji is such a simpleton that I liked Raizo better, he has more personality and his and Tamako’s banter is so hilarious.

I’m leaving the rating as 4 stars, because I don’t want mess up with 22 yrs old Ale love for this series 😆

It is what it is. A shojo romantic comedy. Nothing more, nothing less.

FYI, Pearl Pink vol 2 actually covers only half the book (4 chapters), while the second half is for two standalone one-shot stories: Destined Lovers & Diamond Half.
