A dedicated lawman and single father with a haunted past.
Can he risk his heart on a young woman he'll never deserve?
Hezekiah Boudreaux's life is a sequence of surprises. The deputy sheriff in Splendor is still adjusting to the latest twist—being a single father. Hex's precocious daughter, Lucy, is a handful, and one of two females who bring joy to a life filled with ne'er-do-wells, cons, and rustlers.
Christina McKenna is still reeling from the sudden death of her twin. She fills each day taking care of her younger sister while acting as cook and caretaker for Hex Boudreaux and his always active daughter. The problem is, she's falling in love with her boss.
Both believe they have lots of time to determine their futures until the arrival of a beautiful woman in town, a murder during a birthday celebration, and a series of disastrous events force Hex and Chrissy to take a hard look at their lives.
Unraveling who to trust, who to hunt, the good from the bad, takes time—a commodity in short supply. Hex knows the longer it takes to identify the killers, the higher the danger to his daughter and the woman he's come to love.
Mystery Mesa, book fifteen in the Redemption Mountain historical western romance series, is a full-length novel with an HEA and no cliffhanger.
Shirleen Davies grew up in Southern California. She attended Oregon State University, and has degrees from San Diego State University and the University of Maryland. During the day she provides consulting services to small and mid-sized businesses. But her real passion is writing emotionally charged stories of flawed people who find redemption through love and acceptance. She now lives with her husband in a beautiful town in northern Arizona.
This book is filled with romance along with murder and suspense. Hex is a Deputy Sheriff and Chrissy takes care of his daughter Lucy along with her younger sister CiCi. This book will keep you entertained and turning the pages to see what will happen next as the story unravels. Loved the characters of Hex Chrissy as well as the supporting characters.
This is the first book I have read in this series. I enjoyed the story and the characters very much. Christina had traveled west with her twin sister and younger stepsister to make a life for themselves after the death of her father and stepmother. She is quite wealthy but she takes a job to care for a deputy's young daughter after school. While she cares for her younger sister and Lucy, the deputy's daughter, she begins to have feelings for the handsome deputy.
Hex Boudreaux has a difficult past. He was a former soldier who didn't find out he had a daughter until after the death of her mother. Christina (Chrissy) helps him provide the care Lucy needs when he can't be with her. Hex thinks of Chrissy as a good friend until someone mentions to him that she has grown into a beautiful, desirable woman. He begins to notice that she has indeed, become a beauty and someone he could see himself with forever. But, could she ever see him that way? Time will tell.
There is drama, murder, suspense, romance, intrigue and much more in the book. It is a fairly clean romance that takes place in the late 1800s. I will look forward to reading more from this series.
I was given an arc copy of the book and I willingly offer my honest review.
Hex is a deputy in Splendor. Last year, a woman brought him the daughter he never knew he had, claiming that her mother had died. Left with a precocious girl named Lucy, Hex need help. He asked Chrissy to help take care of Lucy while he worked.
Chrissy moved to Splendor with her twin and a younger sister. Around the time that Lucy came to Hex, Chrissy's twin died. She is still grieving her death but agrees to help help Hex. Her younger sister is friends with Lucy so Chrissy spends her time at Hex' house cooking, cleaning and caring for Lucy until Hex comes home from work. But Chrissy's feelings for Hex grow stronger.
Hex like Chrissy but doesn't believe he is good enough for her. When a beautiful woman comes to town, Hex' head is turned and Chrissy is hurt. There is also a "family" that isn't what they seem who is with a man who is murdered by a gang of masked villains. Will Hex realize what he has with Chrissy before it's too late?
The story is filled with mystery and adventure. This book can be read as a standalone but the other books in the Redemption Mountain series are so good that you shouldn't miss them.
Christina, her twin Millie, and her little sister came to Splendor to start a new life. Their father died, and the girls decided to leave their house because of bad memories. But shortly after they arrived, Millie got sick and passed away. Leaving her alone with her little sister, Cici. Hex had a little girl, Lucy. She was five years old, and Chrissy helped to take care of her. She also cooked for Hex and his brother, Zeke. Chrissy had feelings for Hex, but she wasn't sure how he felt about her. She saw his reaction when this woman Alana came to town. Alane had made a comment about Chrissy being Hex's nanny and housekeeper. Chrissy was upset that he hadn't corrected Alana. A few miscommunication between them, but the attraction was there. She had led a sheltered life. She had only been kissed once when she was young, so when Hex kissed her, she was taken by surprise. Great story of two people who have strong feelings for each other and are cautious about how to proceed. Hex knows that he loves Chrissy and that she would be a great mother to Lucy. And he would love to have her and Cici in his family Another great story by Shirleen Davies. Can't wait to read the next book
I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review. Shirleen Davies has written a beautiful historical love story that takes place in the Montana Territory in 1871.
After their father dies, Christina “Chrissy” McKenna moves to Montana with her twin sister and her much younger sister Cecilia “CiCI.” Unfortunately, Chrissy’s twin becomes ill during the trip and dies soon after.
Hex Boudreaux is a deputy for the town and is a single father of five-year old Lucy. Hex hires Chrissy to watch Lucy while he is working. Since she also makes dinner for them, she and Cici often eat with them. Over time, Hex and Chrissy slowly fall in love with each other. I loved watching their beautiful love story unfold as Hex finally courts shy, innocent Chrissy.
Ms. Davies also adds some intrigue to this book. Two questionable families come to visit the town, separately, but at the same time. During that time, a murder occurs, and both families are considered possible suspects.
This is another absorbing story from this author’s Redemption Mountain Historical Western romance series.
This book is just as enjoyable as all the others in Shirleen Davies Redemption Mountain series. Like the others it is set in the growing town of Splendor, where the residents care about and look out for each other. This one is the story of Hex and Christina, who finds herself alone in the town with her younger sister after her twin dies on their journey west. She finds a life for them in the town looking after Hex’s daughter Lucy while he works as a Deputy Sheriff, a job not without risk and danger during the time. Like the other books in the series there are moments of danger to the residents of Splendour during what were still sometimes lawless times, testing not only the Sheriff and his deputies but the residents of Splendor. At the core of the books in this series is romance, friendships and community spirit, the books make you care about the characters and some of the residents from previous books in the series play a role. Another very enjoyable book in this series.
This is a gripping, sweet and amusing story. Christina had been watching Hex's daughter after school, making them supper and cleaning his house for months, hoping that he would take notice of her. She had been in love with him since soon after meeting him. Hex thought of Chrissy almost as a child, not a grown woman. That is until a couple of people tell him that he should marry her, then he sees her out with a new deputy, a very good looking one. Meanwhile in town, there's a shooting, the investigation into who got shot and who pulled the trigger, a new saloon girl who's is after Hex and a family of thieves that have all kinds of issues. The storyline is dramatic and entertaining, it's a must read book. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
Hex Boudreaux, Deputy Sheriff in Splendor, is a single father to a young daughter Lucy. Christina (Chrissy) McKenna has just lost her twin sister and is now taking care of her younger sister Cici, as well as taking care of Lucy for Hex. She is falling in love with Hex but he still sees her as a young girl and not the woman she is. There is so much action and mystery in this story. A family with four wagons has come to town to open a saloon, a man has been gunned down in a restaurant, and robbery. When Hex sees the beautiful daughter Alana from the new saloon owner he is attracted and asked her to lunch. When he is seen by Chrissy and sees the hurt, he realizes what he might lose or could he be too late and already lost her.
I enjoy Shirleen Davies’ books about the old west. They reflect times of courting and falling in love with the added suspense of gunfights and bank robbers, fires in the town of Splendor, and many other exciting events. I can always count on a fast, fun, and entertaining read. Mystery Mesa is the story of Hex and Christina and how their friendship blooms into love. One can’t help but love Christina with her caring ways and great friendships with others, especially Lucy and Cici, the two young girls in her life. I truly enjoyed this journey into the past when the Montana territory was being settled. We should all have a good friend like Christina.
Brilliant story which has all the features of a historical romance Written by Shirleen Davies, without being cheesy. If you follow the series you will love this book. You don’t have to read all the others as I think, it will work as a stand alone. Sometimes we are put off if we see a book in a series but haven’t read any others, this isn’t the case with this book. The characters are very easy to understand and the book has enough highlights to make it a favourite in the series. I enjoyed the mention of previous characters. Another excellent story and well worth the read. Thank you for sharing your stories with us.
I loved every minute of this book with engaging characters and a story so realistic I felt like I was in Splendor in 1871 and totally involved in all that was happening from beginning to end. I loved the attraction and undeniable chemistry between Deputy Sheriff Hex Boudreaux and Chrissy McKenna who takes care of her younger sister while being a cook and caretaker for Hex and his daughter, Lucy. It's always exciting to virtually return to the Redemption Mountain Historical Western Romance Series by gifted author Shirleen Davies and "Mystery Mesa" is another must-read page-turner. I received an advance reader copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This is one of those books that you finish with a smile on your face. The story-line has several moving parts and all of them intense, interesting and romantic; then, there are those areas of robberies, guns blazing and saloons with entertainment. I enjoyed seeing how Zeke and Hex Boudreaux were doing; I loved the babies in arms of new parents; and, I felt new-love pain when things didn’t go as expected. I’m so glad to read about Splendor again and ride in the old west. Thanks to the author for the ARC for my enjoyment. I do love this genre’.
Chrissie helps Hex out with his daughter, Lucy, she's looking after her young half-sister too. Then a new large family arrives in town and Hex appears interested in Alana, one of the daughters, but she's interested in him for a different reason. There appears to be several criminal factions in the small town, none of which the deputies recognize, although they need to trust their instincts. I'm looking forward to what plans Alana's crowd have, nefarious I think. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Single dad Hex has help from Christina to look after daughter Lucy. She is also living with her younger sister Cici. Christina has developed feelings for Hex but Hex who shows interest in a newcomer to Splendor pushes Christina away. Only when there is distance between them and another deputy pays her attention does Hex realise that he has strong feelings for Christina too. As ever, some interesting side plots in the story too, Another great addition to the series. Read an ARC for an honest review.
This is a story of Chrissy and Hex how they finally got together. But it is more it is a story of Splendor, it's people and the growth of a small town. As always I try to rewrite the story for the review. There is a reason why Ms Davies is the writer and I am the reader. I have been a long time fan. Her books always go to the front of the line. They never disappoint. I received a ARC copy for a fair and honest review. I purchased a copy so that I have an excuse to read it again .
this is another great story in the series. He has just found out he is a father when the mother dies he and his daughter are trying to get along. i was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review if you have read any of her books you will like this one, i like the interaction between him and his brother and the lady taking care of his daughter. also between the other deputies .
I always love Shirleen Davies books and she didn't disappoint with this one. I loved Hex and Christina's story and all the characters. The book captivated me from the beginning and I didn't want to put it. A very good read. I received this book for free but truly loved it and voluntarily leave my review.
Another great book in this series on Redemption Mountains western romances. This one tells of a young woman who fell in love with one of the town’s deputies. Only to wait as one mystery after another had to be dealt with. This is my review and mine alone. Norma Gorrill
I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a good instalment in the series although I did find the conversation a bit simplistic and I didn't really get a sense of the tension or suspense.
Another fabulous addition to a fabulous series. I thought Hex and Chrissy’s story to be a sweet romance with a unique twist. Their path to each other is akin to a pile of tinder waiting for a match. I do think one of the subplots leave you hanging, but other than that I love this book!
I have this entire series this far. I love the way Ms. Davies stays with her original characters and blending new ones in. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books and am looking forward to the next. Well written and entertaining.
This book was so good to read. I have to say that I could not put it down until it. was finished. The drama and mystery was so good. And let us not forget the characters in the book and how the author brings out the full details of each person.
Splendor is a growing town which just keeps adding characters to this continuing saga. Love interest, hardships and friends all pull together to help each other to grow and fall in love. The one difference is this time they didn’t get their man.
Every time I read a new book by Shirleen Davies I am amazed by how good it is. Each book seems to be better than the last in the series. I can't wait to read the next. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Quote: Even though a school night, Lucy would be staying with Cici. End quote. That's the only objection I have with these books. Lucy isn't a school night. There are many similar "make me giggle" errors with those beginning phrases. Some editing is needed.
I've read this series from the beginning and love the way she brings new characters in and keeps us informed about prior characters. Highly recommend her books.
I highly recommend this book and this series. It is about a small town in Montana and it's residents. You will fall in love with the beautifully written series that is described in great detail and all of the love from the people who live there. There are many, many happy couples to learn about and care about. As the series grows so does your heart.
Hex is a deputy in Splendor and he has just found out that he has a daughter that he knew noting about until she turned four and a half. He's a stand up father that gives everything he can to the little girl and so does his brother, Zeke. They make a home for her and change their lives to make sure she is happy.
Christina is a young woman that has spent some time with Hex and his daughter, Lucy on a trip to Splendor on the stage. She has a younger sister that has become fast friends with Lucy and they are together all the time. Chrissy has watched over Lucy since she came to the town and she loves her.
Hex takes out a woman he saw in a parade of women that would be working at a saloon in town soon and it breaks Chrissy's heart. Hex has never thought of Chrissy as a young woman but only as the young girl he has known for a while.
But there's trouble in Splendor, a murder to be solved and who can you trust. The town is trying to find the answers to the danger but it's not easy with the growth of the town and all the new strangers to sort through.
