Just what I needed after the last few books I'd read being disappointing in one way or another. This one filled the bill quite nicely. Some building, but not the central storyline, which is good, because that allowed for development in other directions. Can't say I understand why the main character is so curt with the goddess, but whatever works I guess.
We never really get an explanation of what the first few chapters are all about, though there are hints dropped here and there, so if you're a person who likes things wrapped up all nice and neat, this one will stick in your craw to be sure. On the other hand, there are more books in the series, so perhaps they will go into greater detail.
There's other (minor) issues storywise), such as how the tracker got built, since the main character never once encountered anyone capable of such a featuring. But, game mechanics I guess.
Anyway, despite the minor plot element complaints I have, this was a relatively good story, and I recommend it.
