Havenwood #2

Murphy's Law

Rate this book
Lawson
We were eighteen when I met Remington Monroe. I’d never seen anyone like him. He got onstage at the coffeehouse, armed with a guitar and corny jokes…but unable to hide his lonely eyes. When he sang, I was entranced. When we spent the night talking together, I knew my world would never be the same.

Remington
Music was my only passion until I met Lawson Grant. Our secret nights together, laughing and loving, were my anchor. My dreams of becoming a musician came true because of him, but in the process of achieving them, I lost Law.

Still, I never stopped missing him. When I can’t stay away any longer, I find myself in Havenwood, Law’s hometown. He isn’t exactly thrilled to see me, and I can’t say I blame him. But our connection is too powerful to be tamed, and soon we’re in over our heads again.

Our feelings for each other have never been in doubt, but we have a lot riding against us. I’m not out, my manager is giving me trouble, my family needs me, and my anxiety is worse than ever. Law’s there for me with his love, support, and a group of friends who accept me into the fold. But he can’t be a secret forever, and I can’t lose him again—even if it means risking it all and jeopardizing what’s always defined me—my music.

I read this one a while back but forgot to rate.

I liked Law and Remy, but I'm just not a fan of rock/movie stars in romance books. Granted, Remy was sweet and uncertain, not at all like a typical famous person, but I couldn't fully connect with the relationship.

I think that's me more than the book, so take this review with a grain of salt.

With moments that felt a little reminiscent of a contemporary gay romance version of The Notebook, this second-chance story snuck beyond my emotional defenses and got me right in the feels.

At eighteen, outgoing college freshman Lawson first laid eyes on shy, anxiety-ridden Remington when Remy stepped onstage at a coffee house and poured his soul out in song. They fell in love quickly and they fell in love hard, but due to personal pressures on both sides and Remy’s sudden shot into singer-songwriter superstardom, Lawson and Remy’s (secret) relationship became collateral damage that immeasurably impacted both young men in the years to come.

Years later, on the verge of a breakdown, Remy decides to seek sanctuary in Havenwood—a place he’s never been before but knows to be the hometown of the lost love of his life. After buying a run-down house, Remy decides to throw himself into renovations, hoping to find inspiration in the peace and quiet, because at some point, probably around the time he lost Lawson, he also lost his connection to his music.

As fate would have it, Lawson just happens to own the only other house on the road Remy now resides, and their initial reunion is one filled with shock, heartache, old hurts and residual anger (mostly on Law’s end), and a fiercely undeniable spark of attraction that both men still aren’t able to deny.

Getting to know each other all over again, once Lawson opens his heart to the possibility, is an unexpected but hopeful venture. Now, as successful adults who know themselves better, and who understand exactly what it is that they’ve been missing from their lives all these years apart, Remy and Law soon go all-in on making right the mistakes of their pasts, forging a future together that will be tough, what with Remy’s career in the spotlight—but they know it will be worth it if it means getting to build a life together.

I absolutely adored Lawson and Remy, as individual men and as a heart-skipping-ly in love couple. Lawson’s cheekiness and joy for life perfectly balanced out Remy’s much more quiet and thoughtful nature. Remy’s mental health issues hung heavy on his heart and impacted all facets of his life, but with Law by his side, providing unwavering love and support, Remy’s personal struggles became incrementally more bearable as time went on. I also appreciated that Law’s love wasn’t a magic cure-all for Remy’s issues, but rather served as a confidence builder and an emotionally gratifying support structure that allowed Remy to seek the help he needed and implement some of the lifestyle changes he required to live a happier and healthier life, with Law by his side.

As I said, these two loved and they loved hard. I certainly found myself caught up in their relationship, hurting when they hurt and smiling whenever they found simple joys in being near one another. I loved that they knew how special what they shared together was, and that, despite circumstances and time getting in their way, the depth of their feelings, from younger to older, never wavered.

It didn’t hurt that the rest of the Havenwood crew played memorable secondary roles throughout, supporting Lawson (their friend) and quickly welcoming shy, mostly friendless Remy into the fold with nothing but open arms and a truck load of acceptance and support. This friendship group is filled with great characters, all of whom I look forward to reading about more as the series progresses—although, I’ll be honest, Remy and Law will be hard to top.

This was such a wonderfully told second-chance!! 😭😭😭 I loved the whole damn thing!!

“It’s getting harder and harder,” Law said after a few minutes.
“I know…fuck, I’m sorry.” I rubbed a hand over my face.

I was going to lose him. I knew that. How could I not? But part of me wanted to curl up beside him and beg him to always be mine.

Their Before-story was so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. They fell in love with each other right from the beginning and have been together and trying their hardest for five years.

That was six ago. And now Remi is there, in Law’s fucking hometown.

This was everything I long for in a second-chance romance. All the intense and hurt feelings. The love they shared before that never truly went away. The familiarity between them that is still there. *pierce my heart

My heart broke for Remi. He was fighting anxiety his whole life and all he ever wanted was to make music - but the industry wouldn’t have accepted a gay musician. So they kept it a secret until it wasn’t working anymore and Law went away. Remi didn’t try to stop him.

How Remi fought this time to get over himself and to put Law above all else made me rooting for them real hard. I wanted them to make it. And what was music to Remi without Law anyway? Nothing. He had no music without Law.

“This is a new song. It’s called ‘Soft Place to Fall.’” And then Remy opened his mouth and sang.

I could spend hours watchin’ you sleep
See the shadows dance across your skin
Wishin’, dreamin’, hopin’ not to lose you
That this is a battle I find a way to win
Bein’ with you is light
When the rest of my life is in the dark
All it took was one look, one night
On my heart you left your mark
You are my solace
The soft place where I fall
[…]

Shit, that was so beautiful!!

And Kale William's performance was so wonderful for this story and these characters as well.

I’m pretty disappointed. I was honestly looking forward to reading this one quite a lot, and it did not live up to my expectations. Maybe it’s partly my fault for having hyped it up in my head so much, but I think that even regardless of that, I would not have enjoyed this book all that much.

First of all, I want to point out that I really did like the idea and premise of this story. It’s a second-chance romance about two boys who fell in love when they were 18, but because one of them was unable to come out and constantly wanted to be in hiding, they broke up after a few years of being together. The pain and misery became too much, but they never stopped loving each other.
Now, it’s six years later, and Remy and Lawson reunite again. There are hurt feelings there, but also a lot of unresolved feelings and everlasting love. After dancing around each other for a bit, they eventually get together again, try to work through their issues and become happy once more.

I think one of my main issues with this story was that it all felt a lot like telling rather than showing. Remy and Lawson constantly talk about how much they love each other and how deep their bond is, but in reality I didn’t really see it. Even before their break-up I saw a lot of resentment and bitterness in their relationship, and after they reunited they were kind of just awkward together. There was a constant string of love declarations, but aside from that, they didn’t really do anything together. I have no idea how they truly interact with one another or what makes them feel like they are so perfect for each other. I mean, Lawson only ever talked about Remy’s creativity and stuff like that, while Remy just seemed to be happy to have someone who wanted him deeply for the “real” him. I honestly didn’t really see what made them work well together; it seemed that all that tied them together was the sex and the idea of how much they loved each other.
Anyway, maybe I’m being a bit negative about their situation, because I do believe they both truly loved each other, but I just personally didn’t really get to see that and thus, I wasn’t a big fan of them as a couple. I wasn’t as sympathetic towards their situation and hardships as I could have been had I felt more connected to them or their relationship. It just all fell a bit flat for me. And, in all honesty, I was often bored with it all. I was especially bored with all the sex scenes.

Regardless, my favourite part about this book was when Remy came out publicly. It was absolutely beautiful: I was honestly moved by his words, his strength and his underserved misery. I wish I would have felt more emotions like this throughout the rest of the book, but this was really the only time it hit me.

One thing I can say about Murphy's Law by Riley Hart is that it didn't suffer from the sequel blues. It had it all:

-Second chance romance
-OFY
-Dual POVs
-Protagonists that you fall in love with and root for.
-Awesome secondary characters
-Bi rep
-Small town
-Family
-It also depicts a realistic portrayal of someone who suffers from anxiety.
-Steam
-And the all-important HEA.

From the moment Law's eyes landed on Remy, this book hooked me. Their first meeting was so romantic. It made me swoon.

Highly recommended. 5 Stars.

++Can it be read as a standalone? Yes, but I recommend reading Giving Chase first so that you get to know all the characters since they're a group of friends.

I try to steer away from second chance romance, and don’t enjoy frequent and long flashback scenes but I was in the mood for:

Small town vibes
Rockstar MC
Opposites attract

This ticked all those boxes.

I could feel the love and emotions between the MCs and that kept me reading, wanting to see them get their HEA. There were some happy tears at the end. 🥹

What can I say, I quit the gazillion of books that I am currently reading because I felt an overwhelming urge to read this book. And I don't even fully understand why.

I mean, I certainly liked the first book in this series, but it's definitely not my beloved series. These are probably not even books that I will come back to, that I will read again and again. And yet, the day before yesterday, I found myself eager to read the next book in this series and abandoned some of the really good books I read and everything I should read for my countless challenges to read this book in one day.

And I'm not disappointed at all. I just don't fully understand what attracted me so much to this, by the way quite good, story. Probably it’s this a bit bizarre heart-warming feeling that you have despite the fact that there are many very difficult and serious topics here - from homophobia to mental health problems.

But I think my decision was even more influenced by characters that are very easy to get attached to. While reading the first book, I really liked all of Kellan's and Chase's friends. I just couldn't wait to read their stories. It's really fun to meet these characters again. Like a return to your good friends that you really value and respect. And I really respect the characters in this series. All men are able to fight for themselves and for what is important to them. And I think it is Remy that best shows what I often miss in other books, that the hero has to get back on his own feet, and not just count on his partner to solve his problems for him.

I have no doubt that I will read another book in this series soon. I'm really looking forward to the Knox and Cullen story.

This story finally made me realize one more thing. That I really hate flashbacks in my books. I never liked them, but now I think I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to lack patience in reading what I'm not fully committed to. In this book I have omitted all flashbacks except the first one, and I feel no remorse at all. On the contrary, I feel that I am finally beginning to fully understand what works for me and what does not.

4.5 lost-and-found-love Stars!! 😍💘 This was another great story in the new series by RH. The MCs were relatable and the issues they faced were very realistic. The story resonated with me as well; because it is true that sometimes it's easy to walk away from love when you are young, but as you get older it gets harder and harder to find the same love and as you mature you crave for that love. 😍💞
Law and Remington met in a college town when Law was just a student and Remington was a musician playing in small cafes. When they meet accidentally after one of Remington's performances, their mutual attraction and chemistry comes as a surprise to both since neither is out (Law hadn't know he was bisexual either). What starts between them during those early years is a "first love" 💕 full of passion and tenderness, but it is also secretive with clandestine meetings in hotel rooms. As Remington's music career takes off, it becomes more and more difficult to keep their relationship secret and their bond starts to chafe. Law walks out when he realizes that Remington will always put his music first and will never come out because it could impact his career💔😢
Six years later, faced with a writer's block and non stop anxiety attacks, Remington moves into Havenwood for some peace and inspiration to write music again. Never expecting his past love to show up in his hometown after years of no contact; Law at first is shocked, but slowly gets drawn in by the same feelings he had when they first met💞. As for Remington, he realizes that he needs to course-correct his life to find love and love for music; and one of the main regrets he has is letting Law go. In the beginning, they try to keep their relationship platonic, but it doesn't last long and soon they are back to where they were six years ago. But this time they both have more on the line. Law has had his heart broken and is more wary of trusting Remington, and Remington has more to lose; with one wrong step he can lose both Law and his musical career. 😳😱
What follows is a lovely story of lost-and-found-love 💘❤️ with hints of flashbacks through the POVs of both MCs. With support from family and friends both Law and Remington find their HEA 💝and we get a glimpse of who will feature in the next installment of the Havenwood series (Knox 😉 who is straight??!! 😳) Highly recommended!! 👍👍 Also, is it just me or are we seeing some sparks between Griffin and Josh??🤩💘

A solid second installment of what is shaping to be a wonderful, entertaining series by Riley Hart. I feel like I have personally read so many of Hart's books that I know how she writers really well, and usually they're a win for me because she writes so well.

This, overall, was a win for me as well.

We met Lawson in the first book, as one of Chase and Griffin's two other friends who hangs out with them at the bar. He seemingly doesn't want to settle down and hasn't been serious about anyone, although he admits to Kellan that he has been in love. In this story we find out who that is and what happened.

When Lawson was 18, he met 18 year old Remington in a bar at college, where Remington was playing his music in front of people for the first time. When Remington, who has severe anxiety, is having a slight panic attack outside the bar, Lawson goes over to him and talks to him, helps calm him down, and they end up taking a walk and talking all night, and then they end up kissing. Thus starts a 5 year old relationship.

Only, Remington is a musician, he isn't out (and Lawson isn't out as Bi at the time either), and they have to hide their relationship, especially when Remington hits it big (with Law's help). Eventually, the waiting, the hiding, the constant of only be able to be together in hotel rooms, causes their relationship to fracture. Lawson understandably can't take the hiding anymore, and Remington's severe anxiety and wanting to hidden is too much at the time for him to overcome, and they split, with Law walking away and Remington letting him.

6 years later, Remington is in a rut, and he moves to Havenwood to try to get a break and restart his passion for his music, and whether Lawson is there or not, well...Remy won't complain.

There they meet again, and reconnect.

I personally felt like the transition between Lawson being bad and still hurt about their break up and Rem feeling bad about it and apologizing to them making up and getting back together could have been written better.

There wasn't much fear on Lawson's part that Rem would leave again or break his heart - it was there, but I felt it should have been more prominent - and I felt like Rem should have showed that he was changing and ready to move forward so they could move forward before they got so invented again. It didn't feel quite as organic as it could have, in my opinion.

Also, the sex could have been hotter and more passionate. Sometimes Hart's sex scenes are a winner for me, but more often than not they are nice and fine, but very quick and glossed over, with emotion, yes, but there could be more, and more of a description of the physical. The sex scenes in this were lacking most of the time.

So those two things combined made me give this a star off, but this was still good. I still enjoyed Law and Remy together, and I liked where they got to by the end of this, even if the getting to that point could have bene executed better.

I enjoyed these two both individually as well, and they were sweet together and very much in love, and that much came across the pages for me.

So, a definite thumbs up from me, but there were still areas for improvement, I feel. Definitely recommend, though! It's a great addition to this series.

Next up is Knox, who is seemingly straight but who we all know is not. At least for his LI we'll get in the next book, who we got a very brief glimpse of at the end of this book. I hope we get Griffin's love story at some point as well, who is demi, I think...(I mean I dunno if it was just me, but there was a slight spark or a hint of something between him and Josh, Kellan's bff. They might not be each other's LI, but I'm hoping they are. Fingers crossed!)

If you wanna read a book about two men who are so in love it makes you wanna cry, then this is the book for you.

The way the author wrote the dialogue between Remy and Lawson was so beautiful and heartfelt. I read a lot of romances but it’s not often I come across one with this level of love.

The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because it didn’t have the bit of drama I expected from a hidden/secret relationship. It was the same in the first book, so I think the author likes to keep things stress free which is usually a good thing but I’m just craving a bit more 😂

Aside from that I couldn’t fault the book at all, it was a great read and I’m so excited to continue the series.

Again, this is a me thing rather then the book. A lot of the people seemed to love it. While I really liked it, I didn't love it. It didn't wow me and I was a bit bored during the second half. I feel like I needed more groveling or something because everything seemed to happen so fast. But it was super emotional and I liked most of the characters and the story.

Dnf @85%.
I'm bored.
And annoyed.
Although the storyline is different from the first book, it feels like just the same.
And I don't know.. sex between consenting adults is great, the MCs even love each other, but sex in this series seems to stand in as a cure for everything.. maybe talking about the issue, a hug or an appointment with a professional therapist would be better and actually lead to believable healing. Love and sex are not the cure for everything.

DNF around 20%.
It's me, not the book. I don't want bisexual activities in my M/M's and I sure as hell don't want MC's using beards in my M/M's. It's overly done and tired. And just... no.

My God, the angst in here. My heart hurt 90% of the time and maybe it was my mood, but it got the waterworks going too. The second chance aspect was heavy, but more than anything, I felt for Remy.

I only have Griffin's story left, but out of the other two, this was definitely the heaviest. I'm happy with how everything wrapped up and despite the heaviness of it all, I really enjoyed Law and Remy's story.

Riley Hart doesn't disappoint me, just like Ella Frank.
I love second chance romances. And this was soo good.
But now I'm so curious about Knox's book, because something tells me that it was Mary Beth's son who walked into the bar and checked out him.
Can't wait!!!

This book is the exact reason I die for second chance romance!! It was full of emotion! It had the joy and excitement of a new relationship with the angst of separation. And then…AND THEN…there is the pain and all the passion of the reunion.

Remy and Lawson were wonderful. They met when they were young and due to their situations and circumstances, they went their separate ways. Neither was able to fully move on because their love was the real thing. Once they reunited, it didn’t heal all the wounds but they realized their love was worth all the risks!

Remy’s mental health struggles could be frustrating at times but that was what made him so relatable. I wanted to wrap him in a warm hug. He was so lovable but so so scared! And he did love Law with every fiber of his being. He was just stuck between obligations, fear and love.

Lawson was definitely hurt following their breakup and he never moved on. Remy was his one real love. Even when Remy returned he couldn’t stay mad. He really did just want Remy to live his life honestly, even if that meant they couldn’t be together.

Gah! They were so sweet, kind, affectionate and vulnerable together.

Better than book one. I think you could read this on it’s own. While you get the inside jokes that the group says a couple times it doesn’t feel like you needed to read book one to read this one.

Law and Remy were a good fit. I love a rockstar romance, even though this doesn’t feel like one it was great to see mental health represented in this book.

I did get annoyed with the flashbacks they happened a lot in the beginning and I get that Riley Hart wanted to show they had a history but it was a lot haha

I enjoyed this more than book one for sure!

Wow. Normally I don't like second chance plots but this was really well done and quite different to other books with that theme.
Law ist jist great and I felt for Remy.
The end was a bit rushed in my opinion but ok.
I loved that everyone was supportive ... the whole crew is great
