Tamar really struggled writing this bio, in part because it’s in third person, but mostly because she hasn’t decided whether she’s primarily a psychologist who loves writing, or a writer with a lifelong fascination with psychology.

She must have been someone pretty awesome in a previous life (past life regression indicated a Care Bear), because she gets to do both. Beginning her career as a youth worker, then a secondary school teacher, before becoming a school psychologist, Tamar helps children and teens to live and thrive despite life’s hurdles like loss, relationship difficulties, mental health issues, and trauma.

As lover of reading, inspired by books that sparked beautiful movies in her head, Tamar loves to write young adult romance. To be honest, it was probably inevitable that her knowledge and love of literature would translate into writing emotion driven stories of finding life and love beyond our comfort zones. You can find out more about Tamar’s books at www.tamarsloan.com

A lifetime consumer of knowledge, Tamar holds degrees in Applied Science, Education and Psychology. When not reading, writing or working with teens, Tamar can be found with her husband and two children enjoying country life on their small slice of the Australian bush.
The driving force for all of Tamar’s writing is sharing and connecting. In truth, connecting with others is why she writes. She loves to hear from readers and fellow writers. Find her on all the usual social media channels or her website.

After reading the prequel Burning, I had a good idea I would be wanting to read this whole series to the very end so after finishing Falling I was desperate to read this one Reckoning. I have to say I think all these books have very apt titles that fit the individual places the books are within the whole series, story. I also love each and every cover in this series so far too.

Reckoning picks up right where Falling left off, its literally like flicking over the page within the story as it continues. I really can’t avoid a spoiler here so if you haven’t read up to the ending of Falling please stop reading this review now! At the end of Falling, Wren was chosen to go inside of the lab to Dex despite knowing her father intended on killing everyone that had disagreed and refused to declare themselves followers of Ronan/Cy. Wren has never been so scared for her life, yet at the same time she doesn’t regret coming into the lab to be with Dex, even though it looks like she is going to die with him. Again, a bit spoilery, but with help from Phoenix, Kian and Nova first Wren, then other Askalan’s are rescued from the lab inferno. Dex brining up the rear with the precious laptop that contains all the ancesteral Askalan information. Sadly a few people refuse to trust that there is a way out of the burning lab and perish. Wren finds it difficult to come to terms with the fact her father Ronan/Cy allowed her to perish in a fire he started. The lab survivors are ushered to the forest to hideaway from Cy and his men. Wren and Phoenix are re-introduced to Avis and it goes better for one of the siblings than the other. Sadly Wren decides the only way forward, to get inside information on Cy and his men is to go back and pretend she is sorry. Unfortunately it turns out that Wren doesn’t know her father quite as well as she thought and is put through a gruesome punishment that ensures she will never forget her fathers treatment of her again. Cy also announces that she is going to produce an heir for him. He demands she be paired up with one of his trusted men and give him a grandson. At least there is a little luck left for Wren when she is paired with a fairly decent man who doesn’t wholly agree with Cy’s treatment of Wren or the Askalan people. Just when you think all is lost and the Alaskan natives have no chance at all against Cy’s men and their flamethrowers, help arrives in the form of Dean and his new Outlander army. Dean and his men can fight and will be an asset but what will they want in return for their “help”? Phoenix helps to “train” the Askalan people as best he can with people that have never been, nor wish to be violent towards others.

I won’t go into further detail or spoilers but there is a lot going on in this book. The person who maimed Dex and killed Mercy is revealed along with the reason they did it which has both devastating and drastic consequences. Magnus once the strength of Askala makes a strange choice that his son, Kian, struggles to come to terms with.

A lot of parent/child relationships dramatically change, with both Phoenix and Wren being shocked by how harsh their father Cy can and has been in the past, but when it comes to his life or death what do his children do? Phoenix and Wren also have totally different feelings and attitudes when they meet Avis a face from their past. Phoenix seems to be the one that adapts much quicker to changes where as Wren is much slower at realising the truth of the past and coming around to forgiveness. Both Avis and Wren end up having to face their deepest fears.

I’m not sure how to explain it other than to say this series is really deep, and multi layered, and there similarities that happen within each different generation, for example, earlier in the series there is the relationship between Magnus and Callix who both work for what they believe is the right thing for Askala. Though when it comes down to it the High Bound and the High Bound Leader Magnus has the largest influence. Also Magnus and Callix are positive and are cautious, whereas Ronan who is banished and later changes his name is a negative, impulsive person who puts everyone in danger.

Then later in the series and in this book there is a similar relationship between Kian and Dex, however Kian listens more to the opinions of others than Magnus ever did. Where Magnus is all about the good of Askala no matter the cost, Kian is more concerned about the people of Askala and their survival, as without the people there is no Askala. Both Kian and Dex are positive influencers on Askala and it future, where Dean a relative of Ronan is the more negative impulsive person, who acts first and thinks later.

My immediate thoughts upon finishing this book was another great book in the amazing After The Thaw series. What will the future bring for Luca, Hawk, Sam, Mercy, Robin and Dove? What dangers will they have to face? The earth seems to be regenerating and finding a way to renew itself and become better but will all humans renew their outlook? Will they want to work hard and live in peace? Or will there still be humans who turn up to threaten the peace of Askala and its people?

To sum up once again I thoroughly enjoyed this book, though at first it had a “different” feel to it, but I quickly slipped back into the world with the great characters. The only thing I kind of would have changed was we didn’t have the “Five Years later” section at the end of this book I think I maybe would have preferred it at the beginning of the next book. Having said that I adore this series and am looking forward to seeing what direction the Askalan’s will be heading next.

I'm becoming more and more fond of the characters in this series, and I feel a little sad that I have to leave them now. However, it's already a new series on its way, from the same world but further in the future. Looking forward to that!

I had a little trouble with the pacing of this book, though. It starts off quite intense, to be followed by a long haul of not much happening. Then everything happen at once and I barely have time to catch my breath in between the dangers our characters have to face. I'm so happy we get a kind of epilogue that takes place five years later!

If you enjoyed Divergent, The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner series you should check this series out!

*I received an ARC from the authors and I'm giving my honest review.*

Tense and Terrific!

The depth of the world building and characterisation of this series just gets better and better. It's beyond impressive. Once again Sloan & Catherine write like a dream in one seamless and unique present tense voice that really captivates every one of the senses. But this is more than just a brilliant and entertaining instalment in the series; questions are raised and morals emerge - in such a way that we can't help but ask ourselves what we would do in Askala. Despite it being a tough fictional world of survival, it's been the perfect escapism to dive right into these amazing books throughout the pandemic! And on to the next...

A good book! I read through it really quick. I was a little disappointed with how Ronan was dealt with, and how easy it seemed for Kian, but maybe that was just me. I like how the characters got their ending (though my heart broke for poor Dex).

I know there are more books in the series, but I like how this ended. Not sure if/when I will read the other books.

Of the 4 books in this series, this one was the best written, hence 3 stars rather than 2. We finally get to see the “war” that the 4 books were leading up to.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Things I enjoyed: so many little things were finally wrapped up. Dex’s past, Wren’s parentage, Kian’s reliance on his father. I really liked Wren’s plot line with her mother in this one - highly relatable and realistic. The entire final battle scene was great.

Things I didn’t like: I found it really hard to believe in a bunch of 16 year olds all wanting desperately to be parents. I also found the sex scenes to be ridiculous, but Also, suspension of disbelief is HARD when there are so many obvious, glaring inconsistencies (eg, they have no food or government on this entire planet, yet somehow they have WiFi to open doors and electricity? Phones that stay charged for 16 years unused? Loss of all knowledge of gardening, canning, and storage along with climate change?)

I also STILL don’t understand why Callix wanted to remove Dex’s finger to begin with. It’s not like Unbound are born with 9 fingers, they have them removed. How would having a baby with 9 fingers make anything easier for him?

Anyway, I finished the series because I started it and wanted to see what happened, but I’m definitely not going to read the next set. Such strange books to have high ratings on here.

Redundant

I read the previous books in the series and they were suspenseful and entertaining. This book, however, was a combination of every bad turn of events in a soap opera, and a rehash of previous ideas in her former books.

Ooph! This one's quite brutal and a little nonsensical
Click here for notes and highlights

No lie. Things feel VERY ramped up in this entry and for good reason, now that goals and intentions are coming into play. Thank goodness this book picks up literally EXACTLY where the previous entry left off; I'd have been pissed if I would have been forced to wait on the outcome of such harrowing circumstances. But nope. You're thrust right back into the chaos and are barely granted a chance to breathe, much like our characters. This was a solid, fantastic continuation of the series, but ESPECIALLY of book three (of course). Fortunately, everything unfinished from book three flows seamlessly into this entry and the overall vibe continues strongly.

I was properly fearful for characters' fates, was even "yelling" at the pages when folks were deciding things that I found asinine and incredibly disagreeable. It was one of my few complaints. I get the need for drama (and embrace it), but I couldn't come to terms with characters not being CLEAR about things so as not to be the inadvertent catalyst for sparking deadly circumstances. I'll not spoil it, but damn, the actions of two very specific characters were soooo careless and were clearly written to stress me out needlessly. Given the smarts of MANY people in this book, I found some of their actions/decisions to be uncharacteristic and unbelievable.

I didn't care for the exaggerated qualities of pretty much all the villains this go around, particularly from Cy. I wish there was more development there to help me fully understand his motives other than mere revenge. There was still such an onslaught of goodness though, much like in its predecessor. This book might as well be the "part 2" of book three, since it pulls heavily on those events. There are even MORE revelations to be had, more shocks that induced more gasps out of me. Our main core of Dex, Nova, Wren, and Kian continue to grow and establish themselves as the strong force of this story. I've come to love all of them for different reasons, though I've still got the biggest soft spots for Wren and Dex.

I almost wanted to give this entry 5-stars like its predecessor, but the aforementioned grumblings as well as the oddly placed time-jump sorta tainted things. While I'm glad that the next entry of the series will give me adult versions of our core group, I didn't like the lack of closeout to THIS entry prior to the 5-year time jump. Had the authors rounded things up a bit, gave me some answers after the crazy circumstances that befell Askala and all the people, I'd have been a bit more accepting of it. But I guess I should be glad that the four core at least narratively spoke of the changes that occurred in the past five years so I wasn't completely left in the dark.

I'll be taking advantage of this entry's conclusion and taking a break for now, but I'm very much still on board. I'll be back!

Askala is Burning……

„Reckoning“ (Burning Series Book 4) takes us back to Askala, as its society faces the most dangerous treat in its whole history. The system that began to show its flaws as Kian stepped up as elected High Bound leader and Nova has declared Unbound, back in the second book of the Series (“Rising”) reveling the underlying inequality between the inhabitants of Askala due to this practiced division, has become obsolete with the arrival of an old enemy, the leader of the Outlands rebels, formerly known as Ronan.

“Reckoning” continues without pause the events unfolded as the end of the last installment. After Cy’s arrival, Askala is on the brink of falling apart, fighting for survival against Cy’s path of destruction, which renders Bound and Unbound equally vulnerable. Even if Cy’s revenge is primary aimed at the Bounds who evicted him in the first place, his hatred doesn’t really know any boundaries, and thus the Unbound just become pawns to achieve his new order in Askala.

From the very first page as Dex and Wren are trapped into the fire - and rely on the help of the barely returned Kian and Nova - to the final resolution, the story will keep the reader on the edge of his seat, fighting everything – sleep is overrated nevertheless – that keep him for reaching the end of the tale. The effort being fully recompensed by a wonderful glimpse into the future of Askala and its brand-new approach to equality and survival. A future that is expected to be fully explored in the next installment on the series 😉

“Reckoning” keeps rising the bar on this series and bringing Dystopia fiction to a whole new level. To the danger of sounding like an old record, I’ll keep repeating myself, insisting that this is indeed and by far the best Dystopian Series not only of the decade but ever.

Tamar Sloan and Heidi Catherine have crafted a dystopian world foreign and familiar at the same time, filled with very well developed and multifaceted characters, an extraordinary thoroughly built world, action non-stop, an intelligent plot, and very satisfactory developments. It is a fast-paced book, a real page-turner, that leaves a lasting impression without disregarding the level of pure entertainment every good story should provide.

I have to say that all the books for this series are aptly named and are the perfect hint as to what is in store in each book. I also like that i never know if this is going to be the end, will their be more story after this one. I am happy to say that the story does continue, their is hope on the horizon and we get to see how that plays out. This book in the final showdown for Askala future. On the future of babies who are not supposed to be possible. The author also do a commendable job of not only showing us what the life is like at the Oasis’s we also get to see where the outsiders have been living and why they so badly want what they see as a better life on the oasis. This is a highly addictive series and i eager to see what kind of world is on the horizon. What lessons have been learned from the previous leaders and how will this community survive and thrive.

After reading this book, I wanted to write and post this review to share my honest experiences toward the story.

You know when a book series is so amazing, one you absolutely love, is about to end, you get that book hangover feeling. Prepare to experience this first hand as this conclusion is so amazing, so engaging, so…so good, that I didn’t want it to finish. It was really a heart pounding, addicting read. I had really missed reading about these characters, and could not put it down. And that ending was so sweet. Honestly, I cannot recommend this series enough! It is one every YA dystopian fan should read once in their lifetime. As sad as I was to see this series come to a close, I was overjoyed when I saw that further series’ based on this world will continue in the future, and now I eagerly wait for a continuation of this amazing literary work!!

The end of the storyline HEA

I enjoyed this series and it ends on a HEA but also shows the storyline can continue but change but also with new characters with the children of are main characters.I like how this series was not about just two people we followed the storyline with 4 characters I was not sure on book one and two of I liked it but got use to it.it makes sense as these series has two authors. I have notice there is more books this series ends 5 years later with lots of kids from most of the well know characters.so I guess I could be right in thinking we will move forward when there kids are 16 or 20 as this series started with them being 16 a little young if you ask me for people to be looking at kian to lead them and sex when they was trapped in a fire with him.I think they should if made them 21 at least.but good series

A lot more "oh shit" moments in this "final" book of the series. At one point, it appears the series has ended. And then it continues, with the feel that it's wrapping everything up so the reader has an ending that leaves you feeling satisfied......until it morphs into what can only be setting up for more. And then I realized, that's exactly what was done. Book 5 of this series is technically another series, but yet still the same. #readersofinstagam #therhawchronicles #readeveryday #readinggoals #booknerd

Character "spoiler":

The only issue I have with the timeline is I thought Luca was about 7 or 8 years old when we first met him. But when the end jumps 5 years in the timeline, it gives Lucas's age as 9, which means he would have had to have only been 4 when we first met him and that just doesn't quite seem right.......

I really enjoyed the action in this book. I never quite knew what would happen or what certain characters would do.

I liked how Dex, Wren, Kian, Phoenix and Nova fought for what they believed in and never gave up hope.

Wren and Phoenix were able to get some closure and find out the truth about their mother.

I was glad when a certain character got exactly what he deserved.

The pacing was good and I really like the world this series is set in. It will be interesting to see if there are any other survivors elsewhere.

The ending was very sweet and it was about time that something good happened.

Excellent Series Ender!!

This was a really good ending to this series! I love how the authors extended it out at the very end. The blending of the Outland characters from the last book with the Askalan characters was seamless and exciting, especially Avis and Thea. Little Luca is such a great character with his fierce, brave, inquisitive nature. The entire book is packed with excitement and danger along with tenderness, love, and sacrifice. It zips from one great scene to another to another. Great book!

♡ I'm so glad I read this series.
Not a single book was a disappointment, which I find rare in a series.

This book was a wonderful ending to a fantastic story following Nova, Kian, Dex, and Wren. So much character growth, and heart warming tales.

I admit, some parts of this book dragged a little more than the others for me. It felt as though the authors stalled in certain plot points a little before moving on.

But in the end, it was a fantastic read.
I look forward to continuing the story with the paths of their children in the next set of books.

This was a great ending to Kian, Nova, Wren and Dex's story. I really enjoyed this series. It had just the right amount of action/romance and was easy to read through quickly.

I really loved how the author wrote the ending from each of the 4's perspective. I see how it ignites another story line for their children, and I may get into that eventually.

I highly recommend anyone who loves dystopian novels to read this series.

Can't put it down

This is the fourth book in this series and it just keeps getting better. The people are so well developed, they are now your friends. You are so interested in what they are going to do next, you can't put it down. Some mysteries are solved and others are just starting. I'm really anxious to start the next book. This is the history of the future and its much more interesting than the one I learned in the past.

Apparently Tamar Sloan and Heidi Catherine can just hand me slop on a plate and I’ll eat it up. Because that’s what happened with these last four books. I wish I could’ve read these before I turned 25 and my frontal lobe developed.

My favorite part about these books was when I’d give Sam updates about what was happening, and he’d laugh and shake his head in disbelief. The made up science got progressively more ridiculous.

What an amazing journey, full of twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed this fourth installment in The Thaw Chronicles series. It’s been an abolute joy to read.

The good news is : what supposed to be a three book series is now five ! I’m so happy, and I can’t wait for Extant to be released.

If you (still) haven’t dived in, you should totally check out the dystopian series of this decade.

I dragged it out because I did not want it to end...Man, what happened to Dex makes my heart bleed. But what every character went through made them strong, they did not break, they all deserved their happy ending. What I love about this series, what makes it so unique is how each character affected me so strongly, I honestly cannot pick a favourite.

Fantastic

Best book in the series so far. I found myself laughing, cheering, crying and anxious. What a great read and the journey continues with constant twists and turns and never lets up. You are so embedded with these characters that it's no longer just a story but an amazing adventure you don't want to end.

Good read

This book is pretty good. The group of friends learn how people can manipulate those they should protect, and how things can go from bad to worse in an instant. Flick learns to let herself love again, Nova helps save the day, Dex gets the girl and the boat burns. There's a lot to take in. But it's going to be great.

Read on my friends.

The ending wasn't terrible but a lot was thrown together at the last 1/3 of the book I felt like. Overall, the series was okay. I doubt I'd read it again, and at this point, I don't plan to read the next book about the next generation of Askala.
