I was captivated by this story. I have read many books about the holocaust but this one was from a totally different perspective. I recommend this book to everyone and to all book clubs as there is much to discuss from a different standpoint.
I have known the author, Leon, since I was a teenager which prompted me to read the book. However, I was mesmerized to learn the story of his life since he never spoke about it. His son David, was my best friend, and I knew that they were holocaust survives but I didn't know the extent of what they went thru. I still have to read the interview of his wife Helena.

Help comes from an unexpected source when it looked like the end was closing in!
Leon Kleiner's family lived in Tarnopol, at the time it was located in Poland. It was a wonderful area with lots of shops and restaurants. The people there loved music, art, and were very active socially. There were a few acts of anti-Semitisms once in a while, but mostly everyone lived happily together. There was one man though that doled out acts of vicious brutality, and that was Timush. Everyone knew to stay away from him.
Leon’s family was considered upper middle class and quite frankly Leon was spoiled. Then the war appeared on the horizon in the late 1930s, but there had been talk for a while. Leon’s father did not take the talk seriously and felt with his status his family would be safe. Little did he know what horrors that they would face. And then the Nazi regime arrived in Poland with their murderous fascists.
Here Leon tells his story with brutal descriptions of what his family was subjected to, and how he received help from the one man that no one would ever believe would give it!
Now the true story unfolds…
What did I like? No one ever wants to be forced to survive through something like this, but I was impressed with the ingenuity of Timush’s answer to the problem of hiding Leon, right in plain sight. I know that I could have never entered that bunker, much less live there as long as he did. This story tells of the horrors, but it also gives the reader the feeling that even in the darkest hours, help and hope can come about. The author states, “Looking back on all that I experienced I would have to say that, in the end, I had a wonderful life. But it was one of great extremes, and I have seen both the best life can offer and the absolute worst. My very early years in Tarnopol were pleasant and joyful. They were quickly followed by a few years of unimaginable horror as the Germans wreaked havoc on all of Eastern Europe…”The purpose of this book is to establish a record of evil my family suffered and to give credit to the man who sacrificed all to help us survive…We can never allow such a tragedy to occur again. My hope is that my story can stand with all the others to help prevent history from repeating itself”

In the stories I’ve read, not many talked about what happened after the war. What happened to all the displaced people who were driven away from their homes, separated from their families, had nothing but the shirts on their backs. Many were sick and wounded, what happened to them? I can only imagine how hard it was for Leon Kleiner to retell all that happened to him and his family when the Nazi’s came to their towns, and then afterwards when they tried to pick up the pieces of their broken lives. I highly recommend this must-read story. It is one we need to learn from and one you won’t soon forget.

Then shows how quickly things turn terribly wrong, deadly. This story reads as a fiction novel but is horrifically true. Leon talks about a man named Timush, who surprises everyone and sets out to make good on a promise he made to a priest to help the Jews survive the best he can. This is a riveting, unimaginable, chilling story. I could not put down.

Save My Children: An Astonishing Tale of Survival and Its Unlikely Hero is by Leon Kleiner and Edwin Stepp. It is the story of a family who is saved and what they went through and it is also the story of a Righteous Gentile who changed. This memoir is wonderful and is one that would be great for Middle School students. It tells how a person can change and what can happen when he does. It also shows how the bunker was built to house the Jews. Very little is known about how the hiding places were built so this is unique.
Leon Kleiner rarely talked about his past and even when given the chance to give his testimony to Shoah, he couldn’t. His story was told by his sister and brother who gave their testimony to Shoah for which he was grateful. It was only after their deaths that he realized their story did not reach enough people and that it was still unfinished so he finished the story by writing this book.
Leon was born in August 1928 in Tranopol, Poland (now Ukraine) “ It was a city of about 50,000 people of which almost ½ were Jewish. Now it has a quarter million people of which almost none are Jews “( Kleiner, P2). It was a great city to grow up in with its music, art, and culture, shops and restaurants. His father created a upper middle class living for his family and spoiled his children. They did run across anti-Semitism at times; but most of the time he led a peaceful childhood. His Father believed that World War I was indeed “the war to end all wars” and that people could find a peaceful way to end all arguments. He chose to ignore all the signs that began to pop up about the Germans. It was his Father’s view of the Germans that kept them here in Tranopol to be caught up in the Nazi invasion. His father died of typhoid and his Mother was caught up in the first and major pogrom. She was one of 19,000 killed and buried in a mass grave. Leon and his brother Edek had been taken to a work camp outside of town earlier and avoided the first pogrom. His sister Tusia and her fiancé Mendel were sent to another one. When his Mother was taken, she saw Hryzei Timush in the crowd and called to him to “Save the children”. He was the only one who knew she was calling to him.
Hryzei Timush was a Ukranian who was also very anti-Semitic. He went out of his way to terrorize Jews generally as he stumbled home drunk. Day or night, he went out of his way to hurt or humiliate Jews. He was also a Ukrainian Nationalist and when the Russians took over this section of Poland, they arrested the Nationalists who posed a threat to the Soviet regime. He was tried and condemned to execution. While he waited on his execution, he was in a cell next to an Orthodox priest who was also awaiting execution. As they talked, Timush ultimately confessed his sins and the priest said he must repent of his crimes. Then, if he were to escape, he must atone for those crimes. Timush agreed and said he would never hurt a living thing again. However, he was still in prison. A miracle occurred when the prison was hit by a bomb and the cell was broken open. The priest died; but Timush lived and set out to atone for his crimes. He met Tusia at a villa where she was working with her Aunt Bella. Bella recognized Timush but was really afraid when he treated them like ladies instead of Jews. They were still on guard.
Edek was taken to a work camp and he had a really rough time. He was well on his way to death when their Mother finally raised enough money to bribe a guard to let him and their Uncle Hersh go. Edek was called to go with a German soldier towards the gate where he saw his Mother and Uncle. She had gotten them out. At home, they were cleaned up and she wrapped him in her fur coat for warmth. While gone, an edict had gone out to turn all furs in. Now, she was late and would either be punished for turning it in late or punished for not turning it in. A friend arranged for a client to buy the coat if he liked it. He came to seeit and Tusia recognized him. He offered rations in exchange for the coat and afraid that he would turn them in, Mother told him to take it. His wife liked it so they then sat and talked until it was late. Timush liked his parents every much. Rations appeared later in payment. Timush wanted to help the family and rations kept coming as needed. He was very upset with their Father died. He vowed to help the family as needed. When Mother cried out to him, he set out to do as asked- To Save her Children.
The book just keeps getting better and better as you read. What Timush does to help the children is just amazing. What Leon and his brother and sister have to endure is horrific.

A story of strength, bravery & heroism
I’ve read the first eight books in this series and I found this book to be the most well written of the eight. Leon told his life story in a way that made it cohesive and easy for the reader to follow from day to day, month to month, and so unfortunately, from year to hellish year. Thankfully, he also included, and also had, much better years to come for him & his family.
The courage, strength, bravery and heroism that Leon and his family continually exhibited throughout the years of what I can only imagine as hell on earth was was exceptional.
The title of this book comes from his mother’s final thoughts and wish, “Save my Children.” Leon let’s us know that even within all the war, hatred and sheer horror, there were those who displayed acts of heroism and yes, even love for his family to risk their own lives to help save the lives of his family.
I am thankful that Leon decided to tell his life story. This is a book that should be read by all, lest we forget.

This is an amazing story. I am so glad Leon Kliener decided to put his story in a book. I think that all students should have to read this book or another book from Holocaust survivors. I am shocked that anyone survived this period of time... I cannot fathom the horror and heartbreak these people went thru. Thank God there were some people willing to risk their lives to hide these Jewish families.
We must all understand this story and how it happened in order to prevent another Holocaust. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what really happened.

A new and moving tale of a holocaust survivor.. interestingly enough I picked up this book to read just as Russia invaded Ukraine! He and his family are from Tarnopol and Tluste Ukraine that at the time before WW2 were towns in Poland…so while praying for the current population of Ukraine, I was transported back in time to experience this man’s harrowing survival tale… how could this be happening again? Even if you have read dozens of Jewish Holocaust survival stories, this one is different- all stories need to be heard

I will never tire of learning about the holocaust from the witnesses. The first hand recounts are absolutely beneficial. Everyetime I read a survivors tale I learn something new. Every perspective needs to be written. All sides. Leon's story is no different. Absolutely amazing. Through a brutal time Leon and his siblings managed to stay alive. With help from an unlikely hero and sheer luck, will power they made it through a time when so many didn't. I thank you for your story! I recommend this book and the many other witness books. Never forget !

Couldn't put down this book!
This was an especially interesting memoir because the author wrote so much about his rescuer and what he did to ensure the author's safety as well as the safety of the author's siblings. Prior to helping the author, the rescuer had actually been a terrible tormentor of the Jewish people! Read this book to find out why the rescuer changed from being a Jew hater into a person who risked his life to help Jews during the Holocaust.

History not to be forgotten
It seems unnatural to say one enjoyed a Holocaust survivor story, yet I have great appreciation for his experiences and his forthright determination to ensure it is not forgotten because it can happen again. Hate is right around the corner or next door to everyone. This is not a riveting story, yet a good view into an average young mans life and 8 years of hell.

From Hatred to Heroism
Leon Kleiner's memoir of the Holocaust is both heart-wrenching and compelling. While he is the protagonist in this story, the hero is a convert of sorts; an anti-semite who was both feared and hated by the Jews in his town. The bully became a savior for Leon and his siblings, proving that light can win over darkness, and love can prevail over deep-seated hatred. This is a beautiful story, told beautifully.

A truly amazing journey from a comfortable safe childhood to a deadly work camp to hiding in a tiny dungeon for 9 months, to side stepping certain death countless times from 1939-1946. A harrowing experience that lasted years, took his grandparents and parents along with thousands of others. The constant brutality and violence perpetrated by neighbors and non military residents in cities was disturbing.

I find this story an amazing example of how God can really change the heart of a man. Over the course of the book you witness many miracles from God in the love He dictates we should have. It is a testament of how we should be watchful of another Holocaust, not just for Jews but for all humans.

Unimaginable fear
The things this family endured during Hitlers time as a ruler was just too much for my imagination to bear. I cannot begin to imagine how they are still alive today by only the grace of God and being protected by absolute strangers! This world is an ugly place today and I hope pray we never ever have another Holocaust! God bless all of the survivors and their loved ones! My oma was a survivor and my mother but they were German and yet they were still afraid!

Excellent Interesting Story
This is very interesting well written book about the author 's survival during the Holocaust. Unexpected help comes from a cruel anti-Semitic who changes his beliefs. Leon Kleiner is in many ways a lucky boy as he avoids capture and death on several occasions.

Thought provoking story
I personally found this story a very thoughtfully and well written account of the unbelievable experiences that the writer projects about his life during the horrific period of WWII and survival during the Holocaust. His reflection about his experiences are both unbelievable and heartbreaking, but there's many heartwarming memories as well.

An incredible story of survival. A combination of luck, smart decisions and an ingenious hiding place resulted in the survival of Leon, his brother, his sister, and his sister's boyfriend (later husband). The book starts with Leon's childhood, details the years of Nazi terror, and also covers the years after the war. Should be required reading for any Holocaust deniers.

This book was an amazing story of triumph over the horror that Jewish families had to endure in WW2. The situations that they went through to survive with help from people they didn't even know. Great story
This book was an amazing story of triumph over the horror that Jewish families had to endure in WW2. The situations that they went through to survive with help from people they didn't even know. Great story

I enjoyed reading this book because it told details about many of the hardships this family endured. I've read numerous Holocaust books and this one is probably the most haunting of them all. You must read this book!

Never again
What a book. There is evil in the world. It must always be confronted. To ignore evil is to reinforce the negative behavior that it unacceptable. And, will only lead to more evil. If we forget the lesson of the holocaust it can happen again. Learn from history.

Moving story, well written
An incredible story of survival and resilience, from a different perspective than those who were in concentration camps. I'm very happy Mr. Kleiner recorded his memoir.

Very interesting and detailed. Author sounds like an incredible man, who maintained a positive spirit, despite horrible events. Recommend it for knowledge and spirit. Never again.

This is an incredible story of survival, resilience, and courage, told from a perspective different from those who experienced the concentration camps. Mr. Kleiner’s memoir is deeply moving, honest, and important. I am truly grateful that he chose to record and share his story.
