Dr. Michaela Renee Johnson (@skytalkdoc) is an Amazon best-selling author in self-help and relationships, commercial seaplane and vintage warbird pilot, and unapologetic truth-teller helping people break free from the beliefs that sabotage their lives. With over 15 years of experience as a couples therapist, Michaela specializes in decoding the hidden patterns—what she calls Primal Wounds—that drive our deepest relationship struggles.
She’s read over 500 self-help books so you don’t have to, distilling timeless wisdom and cutting-edge neuroscience into a powerful framework for relational transformation. Her unique blend of clinical expertise, spiritual depth, and no-fluff storytelling has helped hundreds of individuals and couples find clarity, connection, and confidence—in love and in life. Her top iTunes podcast SkyTalkDoc inspires listeners to embrace authenticity, navigate relationships with clarity, and live boldly.
Michaela’s own story is anything but linear. A former overachiever turned grounded rebel, she’s navigated everything from emergency landings to psychological warfare. Raised in a 27-foot trailer with no running water or electricity, she went on to run multimillion-dollar businesses and fly vintage warbirds (yes, for real). She now uses her lived experience to connect with readers and clients who are ready to get real—and soar.
When she’s not writing or coaching, you’ll find Michaela (and Commander) flying float planes from Central America to Alaska, watercoloring, geeking out on health hacks, hiking with her dog Walter, and navigating life’s turbulence with humor and heart. But what she enjoys most is spending time with her house full of boys (fave title: mom).
Michaela believes thriving relationships begin with the idea that you’re not broken—you’re actually working very well. And she’s here to hand you the permission slip to get naked (metaphorically, but hey—your call).
This was a journal that I thought would be interesting due to it is suppose to be a motivational journal for women and as such I was intrigued to find out what they thought would be motivating.
The motivational aspect of this particular journal was to get the journalist to learn how to work on getting their dreams on track and a bit of self-healing as well to align their values as well as strengths to work for those goals. As such if your year is based on learning how to get your sight set on the stars, to learn how to set goals and work on achieving them than this journal is for you.
Michaela does a beautiful job in the various exercises that she offers since not only does she give the reader prompts to explore in depth but she allows the reader to fluctuate between activities. On one page you may be cutting out a picture and writing about it, another you may be writing an answer, composing a poem, visualizing, etc. Unfortunately the majority of these exercises just didn't ring right for me.
At the same time the book starts off each page with a bunch of inspirational quotes, each exploring the said topic of the page. There were a few that I had added to my quote list and others that were already there.
Unless you add your illustrations as part of the activity there are no photos or illustrations besides the light colored abstract background of the journal pages. But there are color coded sections although no introduction to these sections as well.
All in all it is a nice decent little journal again for those artistic women who are wanting to focus on dreams and how to make them happen.

This journal was recently released by Michaela Renee Johnson, and boy is it up to par! I was thrilled to see that some pages call for COLORING! I love coloring, and I can’t wait to do just that!
This journal is more than just your standard, write down what you’re thinking, and be done for the day. It’s full of prompts, useful quotes, and ideas that make you think about what you’re jotting down and why. It’s an excellent way to dig deeper into your inner thoughts and get to know yourself better. Her journal is exactly what it stated: empowered. This journal makes me realize that I NEED to get to know myself better and dig deep!
The first thing I noticed about Johnson’s motivational journal for women is how cute the design is. There are colorful doodles and quotes placed all throughout and really makes filling this book out more enjoyable. In the journal, Johnson points out different aspects of what it takes to achieve your dreams, or at the very least, to stop preventing yourself from getting in the way of achieving them. She gives you prompts, motivational tips, and little (fun!) exercises to try to help you set goals for yourself. Her wording is descriptive and provides a clear understanding of what she is saying to you and (for the exercises) what she suggests you draw, practice, etc. I believe she made a smart decision making a journal versus a normal self-help book mainly because a journal allows someone to organize the jumbled thoughts in their head by putting them down on paper. It allows the person to think more clearly and deeper about the subject matter, which I would argue is important for it to be effective. The length of the journal is not intimidating, coming in at about 140 pages, which makes it a more likely “pick up” than others may be. Overall, Johnson created an eye-catching, inspirational journal that I believe many women would enjoy.
My word for 2020 is POSITIVITY, and this book fits right in with that. This journal motivates and guides you into creating positive changes in your life. The prompts and quotes are imaginative, inspiring, and stimulating.
There is plenty of lined journaling space to accompany each entry, with the soft color scheme from the cover continuing throughout.
A simple, yet provoking journal.
