Until they need him

Antwan Phillips has always been larger than life. Overcoming the odds and making it to the NFL did little to deflate the feigned confidence he had to learn as a child to survive. Often treated like a commodity, he trades on his talents, his looks, his fame, and even his sexual prowess to get whatever temporary fix he needs at the moment to keep up the veneer of confidence.
Until he meets the one woman who doesn’t want his spotlight: she loathes him for it. Ignores him for it. Which only makes him want her more. He settles for the friend zone, but his inability to be comfortable with just being friends causes turmoil in both their lives. The more he chases, the harder she pulls away to keep her secrets hidden. Will their union cause destruction, or will it result in a beautiful disaster?

4.5 🌟!

I enjoyed Antwan and Sarayah! I love a good enemies to lovers situation and we got some political blackmail drama too! Antwan was a typical playboy who thought his old tricks could pull Sarayah, but that was a big mistake! Sarayah wasn't going until she was going! Lol, they had something special but of course Antwan had to tweak out and do something insane! Honestly, I was shocked cause sir bffr! Omg, he had Saraysh messed up! Almost as messed as her father and his mess! I won't speak too much on that to not spoil but that situation was dark! Antwan’s family situation wasn't as bad, but I felt sad for him and how they survived Katrina. Dandridge did an amazing job writing this romance and keeping up with the background stories and plots. How Sarayah and Antwan overcame the scandals, press, jealousy, and their stubbornness was a beautiful chaotic journey! You are locked in from the first chapter and their hilarious first interaction! Sarayah wasn't playing! I'm excited to continue the series! Lastly, I loved #MyRye and Antwan referring to her as bread lmao!

Ok so….

The way this book had me enraged!!! Dandridge managed to capture my attention and emotions instantly and that’s why I had such an emotional reaction to the story. I loved Rye from the first time I met her on page, Antwan too if we being honest. However they both made me mad at several points in this book. Also can I say they have some of THE WORST parents ever. I enjoyed this book too much, loved the growth from Antwan because I did not think he could be redeemed and I’m so glad that I was wrong. Watching the two of them fall in love with each other was nice to see. I actually could’ve used a little bit more of that on page but other than that, I’m thoroughly enjoyed this book. Definitely check it out. Now I need to go see about my faves Billy and Kobe.

Where do I begin?

First I’d like to say I really enjoyed this story but have conflicting feelings on the relationship that it is based on. There will be a lot of spoilers in this review so be aware.

In the first pages it is mentioned that to familiarize yourself with the characters to read Asylum, a book that is second in a five part series. Maybe this should have been a continuation in that respective series as it mentions those characters a lot and not just briefly.

I was not rooting for the two main characters as a couple. Individually, yes.

If they chose not to be in a relationship I’d be perfectly fine. Antwan did TOO much bull for me to hope they’d even talk again! He accused her of giving him a STD in her place of work, that was heard by everyone and resulted in her getting written up. But this happens after they were being intimate and he removed protection without her consent. Rey was also stalked by his old fling who damaged her car and he had the nerve to say it wasn’t his responsibility. He would have been a non-factor after this series of events but alas that’s not what this romance is about.

There is major healing that needed to happen for both of our main characters after the abuse they endured from their families. This is where their connection begins because they found such comfort in opening up with each other. Their friendship was sweet but unfortunately went downhill due to the scenes mentioned above. Though they could not stay away from each even if they tried.

Rey had to conceal the identity of her father due to his blackmailing, and this isn’t revealed to the MMC until the end of the book. And we want them in a relationship?? The ending was abrupt and quickly summarized critical parts of prior conflict. Why? Overall the drama kept me hooked. Should they be together??? You decide

CW: sexual assault, mentions of pedophilia, physical abuse, miscarriage (on page), child neglect, grooming

Well, no need for enemies when you have parents like this couple had. They dealt with a lot. Antwain grew on me though. Rye was irking me for a moment. I'm like girl get to digging and use your resources. My poor Billy and Coby. Good read

In the Immortal Words of CiCi 'Level Up'!

What Had Happened Was...
Messy, chaotic, with a dash of Fucboi x BoutItBih we get the type of love story that takes immense patience. I'm glad I gave myself time to read this and allow time to understand it. Rye and Antwan both have a lot of things to work out and a lot of family toxicity to wade through and heal. At first pass or glance it would seem Rye was just being really unfair with allowing the miscommunication trope by way of not communicating to rule her moves. For Antwan, he started out in a really foul place and had to mend a lot to get back to good. All of that makes for a layered and beautiful told love story. It makes sense why they are so solid in the following books. They had a lot to change, and their love story takes close to 2 years to shift through, and that type of burn feels exquisite when it gets to the end.

Reading is a Journey
I like how Dandridge is able to get into the mud and really go there. For myself, I even had enough of the characters several times. Threw my hands up and said...I can't do it. But that's what I love about reading as a process. I accept that a reading journey may not be all easy. It may not be done all in one sitting. There are times you aren't ready to listen to a story, and there are times that you aren't in an emotionally space to hear what is being said. I'm a mood reader, and I will hop around if I feel it's best for myself. Hop around I did!

*Catcher's Rye* ...oops can't start here. I have to read Asylum first.
★ Asylum: Orphans #2 (Big Coby + Mina)
★Sidelined Love #5 (Carine + Dr. Morrison)
*Asylum re-read
*Catcher's Rye*
★Deception: Orphans #3 (Ev, Billie, Kat romances)
*Catcher's Rye*
★The Coach's Challenge #6 (Coach Stew + Rochelle)
★The Defender's Destiny #2 (Mina + Coby)
★With This Ring #4 (Mina + Coby, Rye + Antwan, Lyric + Grant)
★ Quarterback's Keeper #3 (Lyric + Grant)
★Sampson: Gold Valley #1
*Asylum re-read
★City: Lyrically Sound #1
★Catcher's Rye

Due to my hopping around, I saw how Rye and Antwan's relationship HEA. I loved the moments we got with them. Having that insight gave me clarity to emotionally sit down and finally read their beginning and what a dozy of a beginning it was. Antwan fumbled by acting like a jackass fucboi, and Rye was trying to quietly handle other business so curving him. It all may appear lost, but nope. Their road is just a little bit rocky that's all but we get to see them become friends, we get to see them learn how to heal, and we get to watch patiently as they learn how to love and give grace.

Tough Themes & Romance Tropes
-Enemies to Friends to Lovers
-Sex Positive FMC
-Fucboi energy
-Hurricane Katrina references
-Narissitic Parents
-Sexual Battery
-Ephebophilia
-birthing trauma
-Black Superwoman syndrome

One thing Dandridge will do is incorporate all of these through topics flawlessly and in a way that will have you pausing and thinking but also rooting for the couple. I really struggle with the Black Superwoman syndrome on page. I never like to see the Black FMC struggle unnecessarily, not communicate, try to shoulder everything on her own, and pull up walls while pushing away those she loves. I was actively yelling at Rye at some points. But when I sat my tail down and really considered the entirety of her story, I had an epiphany. Rye is walking through a type of trauma that needs time to bear and heal. The things we hold on to make our families better as a sense of love, her path to the end is something to watch, especially knowing how she shows out in all the other books. That comfort and her banter and fire sex appeal with Antwan just leaps off the page. Now Antwan's wounds were easy to see, but knowing that his reckless mouth is just a mask and cover, it becomes a joy to watch him rid himself of those layers.

Burn, baby burn
Whewwwww, when the slow burn stops slowin' and they combust on the scene, yessssss #hisRye. The ending leaves you wanting to know about the friend group, and it may seem like sadness, but honestly, the reality and heaviness just feel like life. Again, reading by jumping around, I knew the outcome, and I knew how everything would work out, so having that peace of mind was helpful. This book feels like a bridge in some ways. Linking the Orphans to the Desparados. Each group has a little different feel but with the same characters. The friend group beginnings come here and unfold over the next 6 books.

Quotes
“No matter what happens, just remember you’re my Rye.”

"I told you I was coming for what was mine and you, Sarayah, got my name written all in your pussy, carved into your heart and etched into your spirit. There is no you without me...because you got me the same way."

"I might juggle the ball from time to time, but I always make the play when it counts.”

"I saw an angel smile today. That was the only way to describe how Rye’s smile lit up every part of me and the space we were in."

This one was a 3.5 rounded up bc I feel like bc I didn’t read Billy and Coby’s book I couldn’t get the whole story and that’s on me🥲 I did, however, really enjoy this book! I think Sarayah and Antwan’s chemistry and vibe were so good and I genuinely wanted more of it shown rather than just hearing about it, like when it came to dates and the whole group trip to Trinidad🥺 The time jumps also really threw me off bc all this happens in two years??? They just kept saying months ago so I was definitely confused on that end😂 and there was small bits of football mixed in, but I do wish there was more, especially with how the team’s owner is🤭 I will for sure be coming back to this series, but I might have to double back to Billy and Colby’s story first before that😭 ALSO there are some triggers, so definitely be mindful of that fact before going in bc there are things like S.A. and some others that might be triggering to some readers

Not sure what to rate this book.
I really liked Raye, she was such an interesting FC. Antwan I didn’t love, the way he spoke to Raye? Yeah not sure I can get over that and even in serious situations when she seeked him out, his responses were so dismissive. I can understand where he was coming from but I genuinely feel like if he cared about Raye the way he claimed he wouldn’t have spoken to her like that nor told her to leave when she needed him.
Towards the end he articulated how important Raye was to him and I liked that but meh.
The plot was good, the characters were interesting and fun. Their romance however? Yeah not sure

Damn...

Now this book with heavy as s***. I don't even really know how to explain this but it seems like every time miss man writes a book there's always a one book in the series that leaves me punching air... Baby this one had me s*** a brick and fighting for my life. Mind you I love Sarayah, She was my type of girl, she was doing n**** s*** that n****** do and that had me cackling. My girl was out here like I'm just down my f*** and then you can go on your way please don't catch no f****** feelings. 🤣. And let's not forget about Antoine he was out here slinging meat to every big b**** Judy and loose p**** hoe.... I really on some f****** n***** s*** but was upset because out girl called him out on his shit. They back and forth push and pull I liked it it gave me a headache but I definitely liked it. I will say Antwan was definitely f****** s*** up with his attitude and it literally was just making me mad especially with what he did trying to raw dog it all without her permission he deserved that kick in the nuts, Dingles try to blame my goodness but him catching the clap like B**** please you up here have a community Dick.... Honestly right might have not been that bad but she definitely was doing the most when she would just go off on him Because she was struggling with things herself and wasn't opening up to her friends about it... Like d*** you got a village use it... Some of this story was definitely the epitome of hurt people hurt people. Because I was really wondering would they actually end up together with all of the trauma that each of them suffered. With Antwan having a mother and a family that's literally just always holding their hand out For moneygrab and a brother who needs to grow the f*** up and also still suffering from the trauma of the disaster he went through as a child my guy had Deep-rooted trauma. That's definitely why he wouldn't let people get close to him. Really on some surface level s*** with people. But the same can be said for Sarayah, Her mom though I understand that she suffered weighing s*** for the better part of this but because she was f****** delusional albeit she been delusional since 15, And her daddy a b**** that's really all I got for him... He deserves to be a lot of places and I feel like hell is the best choice. I don't even want to speak on Jordan d****** so I'm just gonna leave his dumb a** in the wind. I love the friendship between Portia, Billy, and Rye.... That's a They're ever girl squad. Literally them too was ready to throw hands at the drop of a hat. I would all the s*** that I found at especially what Jordan a** did I would have broke his g****** hands I'm sorry I'm talking about him again but I just had to he would have been handless cause he nasty as f***. This book definitely had some heavy topics but I love that and it literally had me arguing with myself... I was definitely happy that they both ended up growing as people coming into their own and really finding that balance with each other to want to explore Love all of their own. The ending definitely broke my heart because I really hope that Billy and Coby can get back to themselves like that was such a tragic thing to happen I got misty-eyed. 😢 On a lighter note I f**** with uncle Silas cajun creole talking ass I like him... And his gator talk.😁 But as always miss ma'am definitely delivered on this story...even when I think I know what's going to happen the book takes a 180 and I'm put on for a loop I love it... miss ma'am you know you can't do any wrong

The Receiver's Rye

The Receiver's Rye because they definitely were made for each other. Antwan is strong but burden by his family and Sarayah is protective of her grams only because her mom was not a mom. The controlling spirit that their family took liberties with, especially his money and her life, was sickening. I'm glad that she was able to let Twan penetrate her heart so that she can finally fight back. So glad that Rye made him really look at the man in the mirror and inspired him changing for the better for him and for her as well as open his eyes to how his family was loyal to his money and not him. I'm glad that the truth finally came out about her sperm donor and she has Billy a friend and lawyer because her ex employer learned that lesson and I loved it. I enjoyed this one and highly recommend.

Let this hijinks begin!

Meet the wide receiver of the desperados, Antwan, and Sarayah (Rye), Accountant extraodinaire, who counts Billy as a client. Both Antwan and Rye provided mucho comic relief when they were introduced as secondary characters in the Orphan series, and to be honest, both have large personalities, but their story quickly lets us know that the comedy was hiding the trauma with dealing with highly toxic, manipulative family dysfunction that they were tackling. I love the spunk, tenaciousness and quick wit of Rye and adored the unexpected sweetness, loyalty and steadfastness Antwan exhibited. Another great read from this Author. I do recommend reading her books in order as it looks like a ‘world’ is being created. I am here for it!

#RyeanTwan

First time reading this author’s work, and it had me from the beginning.Love how the relationship evolved between Antwan and Rye,even if there was areas that were nonsensical, like the dynamic between Lorraine and her mom,Rye and evil Steven. I didn’t like that Jordan got off so easy, also his role in bullying Rye wasn’t fully understood,at least in my opinion. Was so loving Rye’s take no prisoners attitude at the beginning, but didn’t really understand how she cowered so easily, especially with the assault by Jordan…was hoping that Antwan broke some bones on him.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for a good story line.

So good

A great start to what looks to be a great series. This is very well written and entertaining. The author uses a strong vocabulary, great analogies, many uses of symbolism. The author reflects her knowledge of the social justice system. She did a very good job in linking this story to prior series and it’s drama. So good! I’m now hooked on this authors work.

Not damaged

Rye and Twan really thought they couldn't have their happy ever after because of the walls they built around their hearts. Once they really took the time to learn each other and not let family dictate their lives, they finally got the happiness they always wanted. Great story

antwan really is one of the worst human beings ever written and the way rye didn't held him accountable even for a minute tell me she doesn't have any self-respect
and her friends too like I can't imagine my friends still pushing me toward a man who did to me what antwan did to rye

hated every second of every minute of this book omg

Listennnnn these two right here is the epitome of I don’t know how to communicate because I never learned & because of the trauma that I endured. They frustrated me to no end but I still enjoyed it. It was nice watching the character development for both of them but especially Antwan. But also that ending has me sliding down the wall because not my favsssss 😭😭

Whew!!! The Catcher and Rye

Listen!!! Antwan and Rye took me down through it. I adore their story though. Antwan has got to be the funniest character in the Monroeverse. He don’t care what he says and I love that. Rye is feisty and I love her fire, when it counted, also I wanted to reach through those pages on her so many times. This book was a rollercoaster ride I enjoyed.

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

This book had all of my emotions. I wanted to fight both mom’s for their actions. They both were too much. Oh Mr. Senator🤬🤬. I definitely wanted him to suffer. How could he and his flunkies be so deplorable.

Twan and Rye were a couple made for each other. They both had issues but I love them.

This book was so good. Ready for book 2 of the series.

Ewww their parents!!! SMH! The worst..this is a great story that shows how our upbringing can mold us. I liked how both Rye and Twan both had to peel back layers to be open for love. And they were there for each other, him physically, her emotionally. Great story!!

This is an awesome book. I love Grams and her spunky ways. Rye and Antwan may have their issues but I know love will prevail. Rye’s parents were the worse characters ever written about. I never put this one down once I started reading.

Happy Reading!
