I love how football is both the easiest and hardest game: it's incredibly simple if you want to just think of it as a bunch of folks running after a ball trying to kick it into a rectangle, but it can be full of ideas and tricks if you want to get all nerdy about it. This book is an introduction for those wanting to add another layer to their next viewing.

It delves into the tactical and strategic aspects of the game, breaking down basic principles about formations, playing styles, and the decision-making processes involved in making the most of those ninety minutes on the field.
It's a conversational, accessible, and cohesive analytical guide. I think this is a great starting point for those looking to get into the subject. It's targeted at people who like the game but don't necessarily know that much about it. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect, so we learn about how the sport has evolved from simple formations to using complex, dynamic systems. We get a better sense of how coaches influence their players' game and also get to know different playing styles, such as pressing systems and counter-attacking play.
It strangely feels both dense and a bit repetitive towards the end. As a whole, this is really informative – theory chapters are followed up by examples of matches that made use of what you've just learned, and it helps deepen the understanding just gained. There are a lot of keywords and phrases you'll have to memorise, so it definitely is a vast source of knowledge. At some point, this started to feel like something I had read about in earlier chapters, and I couldn't quite keep the excitement about reading and learning all this stuff up for the entirety of it.
So, this is a great guide for anyone new to the subject, but you definitely need to bring curiosity and genuine interest with you. This is not the book for you if you're simply looking to understand why so many people love football in the first place.

January 25, 2025Erstmal ist das Buch echt sehr toll formatiert und sieht echt gut beim Lesen mit den Grafiken und den (Unter-)Kapiteln aus. Würde sagen ist eine sehr gute Ergänzung auch zu den restlichen Büchern von Tobias Escher. Einiges weiß man schon, aber ist trotzdem gut, dass mal sauber formuliert zu sehen, weil man so dann trotzdem nochmal mehr verinnerlicht und Dinge die man vielleicht eher unterbewusst wusste dann auch nun klar bewusst werden. Neues ist natürlich auch dabei, dass man in der Form vielleicht noch nicht ganz realisiert hat. Wichtig ist auch, dass TE regelmäßig erwähnt, dass Taktik in Wandel ist und nicht alles was er beschreibt zum Zeitpunkt des Lesens noch 1zu1 so dann ist.
Das regt auch zum Reflektieren an und so fallen einem da auch paar Dinge auf die vielleicht jetzt nochmal größere Bedeutung haben und eher nur angedeutet wurden. So kann man das Buch auch gewissermaßen als ein Art Zeitzeugnis wie in den 2010ern über Fußballtaktik gedacht wurde sehen.
Das regt auch zum Reflektieren an und so fallen einem da auch paar Dinge auf die vielleicht jetzt nochmal größere Bedeutung haben und eher nur angedeutet wurden. So kann man das Buch auch gewissermaßen als ein Art Zeitzeugnis wie in den 2010ern über Fußballtaktik gedacht wurde sehen.

Das Buch deckt alle wichtigen Taktiken und Begrifflichkeiten des modernen Fußballs ab.
Ich konnte als Laie eine ganze Menge daraus lernen und kann es auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen.
Mithilfe des Buches konnte ich mir Internetseiten wie Spielverlagerung.de und Eschers Taktikanalysen z.B. für die Deichstube völlig neu erschließen, was für mehr Lesespaß als den reinen Umfang des Buches sorgt.

Sehr guter Überblick über viele wichtige taktische Bereiche des Fußballs. Hat sich für mich aber gegen Ende gefühlt nur noch wiederholt. Trotzdem sehr zu empfehlen!
