All is fair in love and war, right? JESS HAUGEN has a big secret. And no, it’s not just her X-rated website for curvy and obese women, nor her dysfunctional family growing up. It’s that she envies her best friend, Isabella Harper’s perfect life. On top of that, she’s been secretly crushing on Isabella’s ex-boyfriend, KEATS McALLISTER since primary school. When Jess becomes Isabella’s maid of honour, it’s her chance to finally spend some time to get to know the reluctant best man, Keats. But he has other plans for the wedding—to break up the happy couple and get Isabella back. And he wants Jess’ help. After all, the frenemy of his frenemy seems like the perfect ally. Now it’s up to Jess to save her frenemy’s wedding by keeping an eye on Keats. It’s a tough job but then again, she’s had her eye on him for years.
I love that the protagonist in this novel was so real and imperfect. Admittedly, I found her irritating at times, but this is part of what made her so relatable. I'd forgotten what it was like to be a 20-something; the thoughts, feelings, struggles and motivations - but author brought those memories back. This is the second book in the series, and, as with the first, I found it so hard to stop reading and close the kindle!
I loved Boyfrenemy, Book 2 in The Fat Chicks’ Club Series by Catherine Rull. I’m a sucker for heroines who graduated from the “School of Hard Knocks,” like the protagonist, Jess Haugen. I especially enjoyed her inner monologues of self-deprecating humor. I was so proud of Jess’s success with her secret X-rated website for curvy women! But that’s not her only secret: She’s in love with her best friend’s ex – who happens to still be in love with said best friend. Shades of multiple characters suffering from unrequited love from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” keep things hopping through the twists and turns in this delightful novel. I've read it twice and I still found myself laughing out loud and rooting for Jess to find her happily ever after!
Really enjoyed reading the book #2 in the Fat Chicks Club series. I really loved how Jess' character grew. The story had me on the edge of my seat right to the very end.
Great read, easy and entertaining. At points had me laughing out loud. Jess is a believable protagonist and the love story has you hooked to the end. Great work by young Aussie writer.
Characters were multidimensional and so lifelike- I found it hard to remember they were fictional and had to prevent myself from getting all impassioned when disagreeing with some of the protagonist's choices (testament to the author's abilities- serious skill when it comes to capturing the human condition). Personally I didn't love the protagonist this time, but that's a personality clash thing((!) As if she was a real person...) Kudos
This is the second in the series of the fat chick's club and I didn't enjoy it as much as the first.
I think its because I didn't like that the protagonist was so hell bent on getting her man that she was willing to go along with his plan to break up a wedding - no, not the way it should go down.
I am also after more girl friend scenes - I want to see these women bond and connect in their 20s and form strong relationships with each other rather than be petty and envious of what the others have. While I realise this is, unfortunately, the way some women (people) are, lets change this narrative and show how strong, healthy relationships can be. This was teased in the book at the end when the protagonist "comes clean" about her secret job and is able to help the bride (but, arrgghhh, because the bride bought a dress too small for her and didn't lose weight in time for the wedding - buy a bloody dress that fits who you are).
