"Medal of Honor" by Sal Giunta, Brad Meltzer, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, and Alex Sinclair To save a friend from seemingly insurmountable odds, the Dark Knight Detective must summon every ounce of his skill and bravery! This tale is based on the true story of U.S. Army Specialist Salvatore A. Giunta, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in Afghanistan—the first living soldier to receive that honor since the Vietnam War.
"Honor Code" by Larry Hama, Mirko Colak, and John Kalisz Katherine Kane has worked hard to establish herself as one of Gotham's most intelligent and strategically cunning vigilantes. But before she was Batwoman, she was a West Point cadet—and when she gets drafted into a covert mission as brigade XO, she'll need every bit of training that the Army gave her!
Gimmicky and sparse in actual superhero action. The quality of this book feels like a free comic you would get in a cereal box or something a guest speaker would pass out at a school assembly.
This issue serves its purpose as an introduction to Grey’s series in the best way. By beginning with a true story, painted into Gotham, Grey focuses the reader’s attention on the very human possibilities of heroism.
The second story in the issue focuses on a still Army cadet Kate Kane, and gives a glimpse into another moment in her life leading directly to who she becomes back in Gotham. It’s another very grounded tale, focused and heroic all the same.
I enjoyed the first story; Jim Lee art and smart adaption from an Obama speech (imagine basing a comic on the ramblings of the current President?!) the backup story was merely ok.
Get two stories in this, the first one is Batman investing a local shooting. Pretty good, best art I've seen in a Batman title since the new 52. 4/5
The second story focused Kathy Kane, in Iraq. Not sure why it's called Gotham Nights if a story is taking place in Iraq, there were soldiers shooting at each other, kind of boring. You get a hint at what happens to her in the future but honestly with this set up I don't want to read anymore. 1/5
The first story about the real life Medal of Honor recipient was kind of cool, it meshed in kind of strange, yet it worked... I guess? The second story was interesting to see Kate Kane in her military years as a newbie on a mission. Unfortunately the story kind of devolved into weirdness with the whole bats and stuff, but I suppose it was bound to happen.
I read someone’s feedback of “not very Gotham night-y” and while a share that opinion at this stage it’s done enough to make me want to keep up with this story. I’ll definitely be buying the next comic next week.
