This book provides timely and comprehensive insight into data-based (big data and analytics) managerial decision-making. In an age where terms like ‘big data’ and ‘machine learning’ are tossed around but never carefully defined, the authors clearly and plainly explain these core concepts, before spotlighting the focus on the ‘manager’ and Management in the remainder of the book. Chapters are clearly structured and contain useful case studies, practical assessments, as well as succinct ‘take aways’ outlining the key points. Importantly, the authors connect research to practice by including quotes and illustrative scenarios to provide authentic insight into the issues and challenges around using big data for managerial decision-making. Chapter 9 in particular is a favourite, as it explores the ethics and legal implications of data-driven decision-making; an issue we are currently seeing playing out both within and beyond the workplace. Overall, this is an excellent and informative read not only for managers, but for anyone interested in how data can best aid decision-making!
