Malik and Abel were young men who enjoyed the small pleasures of life. Life was easy and routine with no unexpected surprises along the way. They had little care for the world around them, but all that changed when their life went up in flames.
Literally.
The two brothers managed to escape with their lives but the marks on their soul left them far from unscathed. Hardened and set on revenge, Malik puts his focus on protecting the only family he has left, his brother. While Abel is more than capable of protecting himself, Malik isn’t leaving anything to chance.
With the song of revenge drawing Malik in, can he put aside his fury for the sake of his people? Or is the call for blood too strong for him to resist?
Warning: The events of this short story take place years before the start of Fractured Past, Book One of a Talnarin Novel Series. This prequel is told from the perspective of Malik, the main protagonist of the series.
USA Today bestselling author, D.E. Chapman is a fantasy novel addict that reads them as much as she writes them, often pretending to be her characters. After all, life is infinitely more exciting with magic and dragons. She hopes to one day write a book so fantastical that it creates a portal to another world. But beware, not all she writes is sunshine and happy endings. There are darker stories hiding within the depths of her mind, filled with mature content and twisted themes, so tread with caution!
Short books like this are hard to review. This one is especially hard because the world-building is so complicated that 26 pages just gave me enough time to go from confusion about what is going on to intrigued. I still don't really understand enough about what is going on (what is a Talnarian? What is up with the powers?). I guess that is the point of these teaser books to get you to read the series, but in this case I think it may be easier to glean and understand what is going on in this book of one had some understanding of the world so in this regard maybe it would have been better to have read the the series that follows this prequel first. I don't know. It's not a bad story but I felt I was missing a lot.

I was a little worried at first since I was hoping for the next book in the series and this wasn't it. However, this was a rather nice surprise as reading the series, I've wondered about the Talnarians and how they came to be and do things the way they do, expecting that in time it would just be revealed in the current timeline. Didn't expected the author to take some time and write a more thorough background story to the ruling Talnarians. It just connects you more to these characters and makes me excited for the rest of the series.
Malik and Abel are brothers who in the opening chapter lose their parents in an attack on their home and escape via an underground tunnel to wander through the woods climbing trees to escape ravening beasts. The brothers possess mystic powers. Not sure what to make of it all yet. They make it to their Uncles home where Malik is reminded that with the death of his mother he has become a King. He is introduced to his guard and a seer predicts his Queen. Too much too fast and there it ends.
This is the 4th book I've read written by D.E. Chapman; she has done a great job at writing a good short story; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.
I loved the chemistry between the characters.

This Book 1 in A Talnarin Novel Series is a nice, short story has really good characters that have chemistry. These characters are very well constructed and are realistic with lots of chemistry. This is a good read about how Malik got to be king and how he and Abel came to Craforian. This story gives a tiny glimpse on the history of how everything started.

Told through the eyes of Malik, this short read left me underwhelmed and a tad confused. I didn't feel as if I was engaging with the characters, it was all matter of fact and then the end. I think this is best read after the first full book as this is likely to share some clues as to the main characters reasons for revenge and a bit of their history.

I thought is was an ok, short read. It's meant to set up the backstory, but I did find myself floundering with what everything was. I wished there was more description found within the book (there is a glossary at the back that I didn't realize was there). I thought it was interesting, but felt there could have been more. We get to see Malik and Alex as they escape from a murder.
This was an interesting look at Malik and Abel upbringing. Gives you context and insight as to why they are the way they are. I appreciate knowing all this because I often read books and am curious as to the "why is he the way he is". Now I'm ready to start on the rest of the series.

I found this story of Malik and Abel a little confusing. It was short, and well written, but I just could not get it. Maybe it's not for me. I gave it 4 stars because it was well written and I love this author. But it is not something I would read again.
This book helps explain how the series all got started and how it connects with the other books. I enjoyed learning more about the brothers and the history of the talnarins and human relationship. I would recommend this book to everyone.
This book took my emotions on a roller coaster ride. Fantastic storyline with lots of twists throughout. Was on the edge of my seat while reading wondering what would happen next. Best book ever!

I loved the insight on how Malik got to be king and how he and Abel came to Craforian. This novella gives a tiny glimpse on the history of how everything came to be, and now I see how Elaine fits in. I also see where the premonition of the King finding his mate happened.
I really love how you get a bit of the background on Malik. You get to understand his character and his brother a little bit better with this incite into their past. I think it helps with the later books in the series. Loved it!
THIS IS THE PREQUEL TO A TALNARIN SERIES. I ENJOYED THE CHARACTERS AND GETTING SOME OF THE BACKSTORY. I THOUGHT THE STORY INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN. A GREAT BOOK THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND READING.

This prequel was very intriguing. It builds a great foundation for the series that follows it. It definitely sparked my curiosity and I know I'll have to read the series to see what happens to the characters. This series is one I'm looking forward to.
This prequel feels incomplete. There is not a lot of explanation at the beginning and it was hard to follow. I understand this was a prequel, but the story needs to be fleshed out for a reader to enter a new world.
This is a prequel for the Talnarin series and told from Malik’s point of view. Great world building, intriguing characters and entertaining story with loads of drama and suspense. Looking forward to more in the series. I liked it.
A bit short even for a prequel though it was interesting. I couldn’t get totally into the st because I felt there still wasn’t enough information. What I read sounded good and I look forward to reading more.
There was not enough information to let you know if you want to read the rest of the series. Novellas like this are supposed to hook you into reading further, but this one just does not even peak my interest.
Just enough or not enough to get you wanting more so two brothers lose there parents have to hide in a place they have never been to get to their uncle and find out how to avenge there parents death
A gripping novella starting off what promises to be an intriguing series! This was definitely a hooker and beautiful intro to the world of Malik and Abel laced with tragedy. I'll have to check out the next book for sure!
I knew it was a prequel, but I wish this had been longer. It seemed like once the plot started to thicken it ended. It also began very quickly and without too much info on their life before... I kind of just wish there had been more.
