It started with a chance meeting in the file room of the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office. Twenty-five years later, they’re still going strong.
Reviewers have called San Francisco criminal defense attorneys Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez two of the most compelling characters in contemporary crime fiction. FIRST TRIAL is New York Times best-selling author Sheldon Siegel’s long-awaited short story describing how Mike and Rosie met twenty years before they first appeared in SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES, Siegel’s classic debut novel about a murder in a big San Francisco law firm.

4 stars for an easy to read short story. I have read 7 books in this series, all published prior to this book. This book is a prequel to those books. It introduces all of the main characters in the series: Mike Daley--newly hired public defender lawyer Rosie Fernandez- Mike's supervisor in the Public Defender office Sylvia Fernandez- Rosie's mother Roosevelt Johnson-- San Francisco police officer and partner to Mike's father cop Pete Daley-- Mike's younger brother and a cop Bill "McNasty" McNulty--prosecuting District Attorney Terrence "the Terminator" Love-- career petty criminal
Mike takes on his first case, with guidance from Rosie. This short story can be read in 1 sitting. Thank You Sheldon Siegel for sending me this eBook.
I recently started reading the Mike and Rosie series. This is a short, quick introduction to the characters, and Mike's first trial at the PDs office out of law school.
Note that I couldn't locate this story anywhere, so I shot Mr. Seigel an email, and he sent it to me for free within a couple of hours. Really awesome to hear from the man himself.
This is a (very) short story, a prequel to the Mike Daley series. The story presents the main character starting his new job as pubic defender in San Francisco, after having been a priest for a few years before. In a first case, his First Trial, he has to defend a (unsuccessful) former boxer who has become a regular customer of the San Francisco legal system.
This was my first book of this author, and motivated me to continue reading the series.
Nice little book where you get to see how Mike and Rosie started. Quick read, but still fun to read Mike’s first trial, and I have read 12 of the Mike and Rosie books. Always look forward to reading Sheldon Siegel. It’s like going home.
This is the genesis of Mike Daley first days as a PD in San-Francisco and how he meets futur recurring characters of his series, starting with Rosie. The first trial involves Terrence the Terminator! A really funny and good vibes origin story!
I read this in the anthology "Turning the Tide". The characters wre unknown to me before this.
Mike Daley is an ex-priest from a family of cops. He has left the priesthood to become a defense attorney. This is about his first trial. The author did a great job of describing what was happening. It is set in the early eighties, so there was an “oldness” about it. The fact that the era of my teens is now “old” is weird. Anyway Terrence is an ex-boxer and small-time criminal who needs Mike’s help. I liked how much realism was put into the trial scene.
