The Goodwin Chronicles is the story of a family going through some changes and learning secrets about themselves and each other along the way. They are forced to move from London to a country home in the West Midlands because their father, a wildly successful author, is having problems with overeager fans. Elizabeth is 16 and the most disappointed by the move. She’s a naturally defiant young woman forced to live with four brothers and is angry she had to leave her friends behind when she was so close to graduating. Isaac is 14 and an avid footballer. He’s upset he had to leave his club team behind, but is at least excited about the new competition. Daniel is 13 and is a voracious reader. He is the middle child and operates as a loner most of the time. The twins, Addison and James, are 9 and are precocious troublemakers, always playing pranks and causing trouble. The children are generally not happy they had to move to the country, and are quite displeased with their father. While playing in their new house, James and Addison catch something in an elaborate makeshift trap made out of blankets, but Elizabeth shoos them off to bed before they can discover what it is. The twins, however, sneak out of their beds and learn their captive has escaped, so they follow it to the walled garden where they accidentally get sucked into a magical portal. This sets off an adventure that none of the Goodwin children expected.
