Rate this book
The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Believer, Granta и New Scientist.

Department of Mind-Blowing Theories collects Tom Gauld’s science cartoons from New Scientist magazine and, like a lot of strip collections, the quality is mixed, though I’d say there was more crap here than good unfortunately.

There are some strips that are funny in a thoughtful way rather than laugh-out-loud-funny. Testing an invisibility pill and a flying hat at the same time; a scientist using a mind-reading apparatus and saying “Are you absolutely sure that you’re not thinking about nuts?” to her annoyed colleague while a squirrel sits on a branch outside; swapping out hand sanitiser for growth serum.

Others are clever like the backwards strip about a time reversal machine or the tiny replica of the room with the scientists in repeated over and over. I also like Gauld’s art - it’s simplistic but there’s an elegance to the style and I find it appealing.

The bulk of the book though is mostly unfunny and instantly forgettable strips, exactly the kind you find embedded in magazine articles that leave no impression behind. Reading a whole bunch of them in one book doesn’t improve them - Department of Mind-Blowing Theories is a decidedly non-mind-blowing gag strip collection.

Gary Larson is the artist I most associate with science cartoons, of course. But this is a very good collection, too; Here's a review that shares some of his work in it, work that makes me smile:

https://www.commonscomics.com/2020/de...

I liked Gauld's literary cartoons, Baking with Kafka, but this one I actually liked a bit better as it seems more coherent, and a bit funnier. I smiled quite a bit throughout, and admire the formal elegance of his line work, in its simplicity, a touch of Edward Gorey in it.

Smart and funny and cute science themed collection of cartoons, with which I had a lot of fun. Not really "OH, HAHAHA HAHA HAHA!" funny, but kind of funny I would love to keep on my imaginary coffee table and come back to from time to time. Some of them were genuinely brilliant.

A set of cartoons for science nerds.

All of these originally appeared in New Scientist magazine, so obviously, the STEM level is quite high. A few of these are a bit too abstract, but many of these are genuinely hilarious. Most depict a high level of scientific understanding, so it would help if the reader also has a basic scientific knowledge, else the joke would be lost in the ether.

Much recommended to science enthusiasts with a sense of humour. Better if read at random than in one go.

4 stars.

This was a Birthday gift which was somewhat delayed due to Corona, but it was definitely worth the wait! I really enjoyed, as I always do with the comics of Tom Gauld.

They are funny in such a nice way, I cannot help but get a little smile upon my face whenever I think of them, or send them around to friends. This one being focused on science in a broad way, was something that made me like it extra.

Only small downside was that I already knew some of the comics, which can not be helped as I like to browse his social media.

Definitely recommended!

A collection of wonderful, quirky and funny cartoons by Tom Gauld that poke gentle fun at the field of science. It also skewers various tropes about scientists (like 'the mad scientist' or the 'oops, I didn't mean to do that') which still showing why scientists can sometimes be so maddeningly single-minded about getting some done (or undone).

Best read for those who know something about science and scientists. Some of the more technically minded cartoons may confuse some readers but you will still enjoy looking at the angular artwork featured in the book.

Tom Gauld's science cartoons aren't as funny to me as the book and literary humor in his Baking With Kafka collection, but they are still pretty darn amusing.

Maybe too smart for its own good at times but some of these comics were really really clever and got a good smile out of me.

Scientists of every type will require two copies in order to careful unbind the books and post on the lab or office door: joining the tradition of Larson and XKCD in nerd humor. Of course, without a patent or two in their name they can't possibly afford two copies, so friends and relations can feel safe buying it as a gift.

Alternatively, scientists could just clone it. I mean, copy it.

Come to that, they could all just borrow copies from university libraries. Possibly they have been following the Guardian, the New Yorker, and New Scientist, and collecting from those sources with or without copying.

Dear New Yorker
If you offer a booking with a Tom Gauld cartoon on books or science, I will actually subscribe. And by "subscribe" I mean "request as a gift" because without any patents, am unlikely to be able to afford a subscription regardless of the discount. I'm not complaining, though, because so much job satisfaction and a sense of purpose that outweighs the occasional existential despair caused by catching up on the news. Or if not one of the cartoons, then just a reproduction of the custom endpapers.
Thanx!

Final thought: it's an excellent size for taking up space in a Christmas stocking if that is a need you have.

Każda strona to jeden pasek; paski pierwotnie ukazywały się w magazynie „New Scientist” i wszystkie dotyczą nauki i naukowców.

If the premise of fun science comics wasn't enough to get me interested, the praise from Neil Gaiman on the back of the book sure would!! I'm really not a genius in the science department, but I've always been more drawn to science related things than social studies, so this was an extremely pleasant read. I admit I don't always get the jokes (i am dumb), but when I do, they're brilliant!! I really enjoyed the witty vibe of the entire book and the fun plays on different science subjects. As Neil said, Tom Gauld's comics is funny in a way that makes you feel smarter, and I will probably check out more of his stuff in the future.

I only recently discovered Mr. Gauld, and <3'd his cartoon collections on literary subjects - THIS however, is all science-related - so not QUITE so enamored of them - a few I had not a clue what they were even about. :-(

Tom Gauld's cartoons are such a source of delight! I was hopeful that I would enjoy this new book despite its being about science: my knowledge of sciences in general is pretty limited, but I can't say how many times I have re-read Gauld's other books, and I decided to give it a try. Honestly, this book could be enjoyed by anyone, perhaps even more so than YAJJomJ or BwK (wow, some acronyms). So much fun!
