The mystery of an empty grave leads Julia to find magic and love among the creatures of the night.
When Julia asks her deceased husband to take her with him, she doesn’t expect an answer. But when it’s vampires who hear her request, she’s given a choice: follow her husband to the hereafter… or remain in this world and assist the undead.
The Vampire’s Assistant is a short urban fantasy / paranormal vampire romance with hints of mystery.
It’s the perfect fast, engrossing introduction to a new vampire series with an adult female protagonist, and the prequel to The Vampires of Emberbury Series by Eva Alton.
"Once upon a time, I designed homes for the real world; now I weave magical worlds where reality fades away."
Eva Alton is an award-winning author of paranormal romance, magical realism and paranormal women's fiction novels. She's the author of Stray Witch and The Vampires of Emberbury Series.
I've read Eva Alton's writing before, and loved it, and I wasn't disappointed by 'The Vampire's Assistant'.
The story is set in the aftermath of WW2 and follows Julia, who is a war widow. She finds herself in the most unusual of circumstances with the most unusual of people (no spoilers!).
What follows is a gripping take of growth, love, loyalty and mystery. Masterfully told by Alton, this is a thoroughly enchanting and enjoyable read.
Just finished this novelette which is a prequel to Stray Witch. I loved that book, and I loved this one! Perfect witchy read for this time of year. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
BRILLIANT ! A love story in a surreal post WWII world. It is heart felt and heart breaking but shines a light on why and Vampires require daytime assistants. The characters are so realistically portrayed that the sights and sounds draw you into the book. I loved it and could not put it down.
I really liked this book. It's set after WW2 and it tells the story of Julia, a widow who is trying to solve the mystery of her husband's death. She finds herself involved with a clan of vampires. The characters are awesome. I loved Julia, Ludovic and Francesca. It was a great introduction to this series. Can't wait to read the next one.
The Vampire's Assistant is a beautifully written love story, somehow both dark and tragic and sweet and refreshing, all at once. A must read for any lover of the paranormal. Or anyone else, for that matter. I couldn't put it down!
I'm a BIG TIME Anne Rice fan and I can say this book for me totally measures up. I love books about Vampires, Witches, Magic etc and this story did not disappoint. Julia is searching for answers centering around her husband's death and placement of his body... his grave is empty, yet she lovingly visits him regularly. Just below the cemetery, another world of Vampires and the Occult is alive and flourishing under cover. Ludovic is captivating and had me spell bound. This book is a must read! No spoilers here other than I could not and did not want to put this down.
The Vampire's Assistant is a novella that prequels The Vampires of Emberbury Book 1 ‘The Stray Witch' which is one of the first books that I reviewed for Bedside Book Review. This novella is written in the same light and easy way as 'The Stray Witch', it is a quick little story to read and absolutely can be read as a standalone book. However, be warned, if you pick up this book you will be completely drawn into Eva Alton's world of vampires and witches. Julia is a war widow who is stalked at her husband's 'empty' graveside, captured by vampires who reside in the Cloister at Emberbury and given a choice. Live and work for them, learn how to be a witch and master her magic or join her dead husband in the afterlife. Choosing to live Julia seeks answers to find out what happened to the body of her husband and in the process becomes enamored with one of the vampires that captured her in the first place. Ludovic is a dashing and charming Italian vampire who swore to never fall in love with a witch again. Will he follow his own vow? You must read the book to find out. I thoroughly enjoyed this novella and would have liked it to have been longer. I found the character of Julia to be fiesty and determined and was very sorry to see the end pages of the book. The chemistry that Eva creates between Julia and Ludovic is electric and really has the reader wanting more. I am very happy that the next book in the Vampires of Emberbury series is due out soon. I would highly recommend that if you haven't yet picked up one of Eva's books that you do so soon.
The Novella was a wonderful book to read. It gave me new insights into some characters in the main series, as well as introducing some new ones.
I liked Julia from the start. I wanted to immerse myself in the world of the vampires with her to discover things by her side. To be honest, I would have loved to read more about her life. The story was over far too quickly.
I still find the concept of the collaboration between vampires and witches very interesting and can only recommend it to anyone who likes paranormal fantasy and romance. It’s a good way to start the series if you’re not sure if you’re interested in the main story.
I enjoyed this novella. The plot is good. Julia and Ludovic are good characters. Julia works for vampires, discovers she's a witch and starts to use magic. There is also the mystery of Julia's husband's death. I wish this story were longer.
What can I say. Eva Alton always delivers. I came to love Alba and Clarence from after reading book 1 (Stray Witch) and the story only continues to get better and better. I am ready for the next book, and I highly recommen this series.
Got the book at the beggining of the month and finally got the tine to read it. It's a prequel. Nice writing, likable characters and left me wanting to read more about them. An easy catchy read. Finished it fast and was relieved the "next" book from the series is already out and continued with that one right away!
After having read Stray witch I've been very eager to pick up this short story. All I can say is that I was not disappointed. It was fascinating to learn about both Julia and Francesca's history. I hadn't guessed that either of them had experienced so much. I'm tempted to re-read Stray Witch now I know so much more about the story! It was a captivating read and one I couldn't put down. I only wish that it had been much, much longer! I want to know more about Julia - perhaps another short story, Eva? ;)
I cannot praise Eva Alton's writing enough. Her words just flow straight off the pages and fill your imagination. Looking for to reading Witch's Mirror.
Having read 2 of the 3 main books of this series, plus the novella A Winter's Cobalt Kiss, I was keen to learn more about Alba's predecessor, Julia. And I couldn't have been more delighted to meet her! A war widow grieving over the empty tomb of her husband is how we first meet her, but Julia proves herself to be a survivor, and a feisty one at that! There is a mystery surrounding her husband's empty tomb; one which the very dashing Ludovic helps her to solve. This short story is full of love, loss and family connections which you won't want to miss. Another marvellously written book by Eva Alton, which draws you in to the wondrous world of The Vampires of Emberbury.

Once again, Eva Alton has grabbed me from the opening sentence - and I am not a reader of paranormal fantasy. Well, except for Alton books. I read Ms. Alton’s first book, Stray Witch which was worth every 5 star I gave it. The Vampire’s Assistant, the prequel, was just as compelling. The characters are well developed and as always, there’s good vampires along with a couple of scarier characters (beware of bookstore owners). Alton’s writing is exceptional. If she keeps this up, she’ll be a force to be reckoned with in world of really great writers. I’m eagerly awaiting the release of The Witches Mirror, the second in the book series.
This is the prequel to The Vampires of Emberbury series. I really enjoyed reading this book. I thought it was well written and the characters well written as well. This was a quick read but held your interest from start to finish. I would recommend reading and am looking forward to reading book 1.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
