Hope Ranch #2

Hope for Tomorrow

Rate this book
She's out of options. He doesn't want to get involved.

Skye Hewitt thought coming to Jesus would fix all her problems. Boy was she wrong. But He has given her the strength to make some big decisions. Like the choice to leave the East Coast where she was comfortable, and head to the Southwest and the grandparents she’s never met. Maybe the change of scene will provide the solution she desperately needs.

Morgan Young came to Hope Ranch to work with horses and put his years as a police officer behind him. The influx of Hewitt grandchildren isn’t even a blip on his radar. At least until Skye shows up. Now he’s torn between seeking out and steering clear of the woman who stirs more than his curiosity.

The longer she stays, the more they’re thrown together, and both of them will have to decide if falling in love is something they’re willing to risk.

I am really loving this Hope Ranch series. This is the second in the series, though the third book in the Peacock Hill series features one of the Hewitt siblings and looks to be a kind of spring board for this series? Not sure, because I haven't read that one yet but Azure is referenced in this one a few times and she's the heroine of A Heart Realigned. Have I confused you yet? lol Me too. :-)

Really, all you need to know is that Hope for Tomorrow can be read as a standalone. There'll be a romance-y spoiler from book one but we all know romances deliver happily ever afters so that's not really a spoiler. I'm getting confusing again, aren't I? And ramble-y. I'll smarten up. Ahem.

So, basically this series follows the Hewitt siblings as they find their way to love and faith. Their parents have raised them in a very nomadic, hippy-ish lifestyle and their father has cut all ties with his parents. So none of the Hewitts have ever met their grandparents. One by one, though, they find their way to Hope Ranch where all the magic happens.

Love the faith elements in this novel! A real look at what it's like to be a new believer and how confusing that can sometimes be. Plus there's this beautiful subtle thread about the power of prayer since the grandparents have been praying for the grandchildren they have never met and those decades long prayers are being answered in stunning ways!

Skye is feeling lost and alone, unsure why she is suddenly facing a catastrophic life challenge now that she's become a Christian. Aargh, but I can't say any more than that without going all spoiler-y so I'll just say I really appreciated her journey. Totally related to it, in fact. Fumed over things that had been said to her by 'well meaning' Christians and rejoiced when she found the comfort and security she sought in the arms of her grandparents.

If only a certain handsome ranch hand didn't keep shifting her equilibrium. :-) Happy sigh. There's something about a faith-filled, prayer-centered cowboy hero, isn't there? Love, love, love Morgan. He's solid and dependable, though wary of romance. And he's utterly befuddled not only by Skye but by the feelings she stirs in him. Great romance where the obstacles aren't insurmountable but angsty enough to keep a reader on the edge of her fainting couch!

There's an extra kick to a secondary plot towards the end which has me anxious to dive into the next book, Hope for Love. Plus it's Royal's story -- Skye's twin and I love the way the author has revved up my anticipation with snippets of Royal in this book. :-)

I enjoyed listening to the audible edition narrated by Andrea Summer.

I love books that I don't have to slog through, books that make it easy to just keep reading and reading ... and I finished all but the first chapter in one sitting!

And though I hadn't read the first in the series, I didn't feel like I missed anything. It's definitely one of those series where the other main characters are mentioned but they each have a different love story.

I loved that though we got both Skye's (the heroine) and Morgan's (the hero) POVs, we didn't have to relive any of the violence that still seared Morgan's memory. I very much appreciate not having that stamped on my overactive imagination to live it vicariously. I loved both of their flawed but sweet personalities. I loved how fleshed out almost all of the secondary characters were.

It was interesting to have Skye's family dynamics be such a major part of the plot. It felt very complicated and real. We all go through things in the middle of complex family relationships or other messy relationships in addition to other trials like medical diagnoses or trust issues.

I especially loved the life lessons sprinkled throughout. And the strong faith thread! I loved how Skye wrestled with how much to share Jesus with her hostile family and also how praying in her daily life was a little more complicated than usual.

I highly recommend it!

Favorite quotes:
“Wayne might have kept quiet about Morgan watching Skye sleep, but she wouldn't. That woman saw hearts and flowers everywhere she looked. And that wasn't something in the cards for Morgan.” (p. 12)

“'Basically your grandparents took a chance on someone who was looking for a change and willing to work hard and learn.' … There were more strays at Hope Ranch than people who belonged there.” (p. 34)

“Plus she didn't know where she stood with him... She had no idea. The man had a poker face that could win tournaments.” (p. 43)

“At least Morgan wasn't lurking nearby where he'd see. Filling a tube with spit was no way to convince someone they wanted to kiss you again.” (p. 85)

“'Of course.' … 'I love you.' … He [had] said he loved her. There was nothing 'of course' about that.” (p. 129)

“Nothing worked. Nothing was fun. It was all pointless. 'Meaningless, meaningless.' … He was losing it. Maybe whoever wrote Ecclesiastes had been, too. It wasn't a comforting thought.” (p. 163)

“'Marriage is work. It's compromise … You have to be willing to bend and to apologize when you're wrong – even sometimes when you aren't wrong but when you've gone about being right the wrong way.'” (p. 178)

Skye has never met her grandparents. Some of her siblings have recently met them. So she decides after losing her job to travel and meet them. She’s also experiencing an unknown medical issue. She meets Morgan at the ranch. He’s a former police officer turned horse enthusiast. He helps Skye’s grandparents at the ranch. I really enjoyed this book. I received a copy of this book from the author. All views stated here are my own.

If you haven’t read the first two books about the Hewitt siblings (Azure in A Heart Realigned, and Cyan in Hope for Christmas), you will enjoy this book more if you can read those first. If not, you’ll still get a lot out of this one. Maddrey does a good job with pacing, characters, spiritual depth, tackling difficult subjects, romance, and humor. I think my favorite line in this book is when the main female character, Skye, says “...I’m not likely to end up the heroine of a romance novel any time soon...” I always look forward to new books by Elizabeth Maddrey, and this one did not disappoint.

When Skye loses her job due to ill health (cause unknown), she decides to visit Hope Ranch to meet her grandparents for the first time, what she's heard about them from her siblings who have met them leading her to believe that she will be welcomed. And she is, in a way she's never really been before. Though the cause of her health problems is still unknown, she forges close relationships with all those at the ranch - but particularly Morgan. Skye and Morgan are looking forward to a future together when a DNA test calls into question all she'd ever known about her family and sets in train a series of events that force her to make hard decisions. Will their relationship survive the turmoil?

I think my biggest complaint about this book is that it wasn't long enough - not that it felt in any way cut short, just that I was enjoying spending time with the characters and was sad to see the book finish! All in all, a clean, well-written book that has some 'body' to it and a very satisfying end. I look forward to hearing more about the other 'blue' siblings in future books in the series. Note that, though part of a series, this book can be enjoyed alone with no problem. Having said that, some characters from the Peacock Hill series and book 1 of this series do make appearances, so having read them means that you can enjoy meeting said characters again!

Note that I received a review copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

Very enjoyable second book in a new series by Elizabeth Maddrey - the new cast of characters and setting (a horse ranch in New Mexico called Rancho de Esperanza) make it fresh for me as a reader and fan. I've been following and devouring Maddrey's other Christian romance books and series for quite some time now (which are mostly set in the DC/North VA area), and this is a nice change of pace.

Still, there are connections in this new series to her other, more familiar characters and that is a lot of fun - seeing how God is at work in a network of friends and family is a delight. As the author has said in various places, her books are very much Jesus oriented and her novels typically (but not always) tackle a real life issue, and from a Christian perspective.

In this case, Hope for Tomorrow, deals with a young woman named Skye who struggles with depression and chronic fatigue. Skye is reluctant to begin a romance when her first concern is discovering the root of her health concerns. Her love interest, Morgan, has issues of his own he's still dealing with - the hurt of a short marriage gone sour. The two discover hope amidst the hurt.

This kind of set up is real-world and makes for engaging reading. Maddrey's style is easy going, not heavy handed, and filled with scenes of carefree hope, faith, and love. I'm already on to book three! Recommended for fans of gentle romance; and those who normally stick with the clean and/or inspirational genre will likely find this Christian romance to be very enjoyable as well.

She's out of options. He doesn't want to get involved.

Hope for Tomorrow, as with all the stories I've ever read by Elizabeth Maddrey, packs a wallop.

As Skye struggles with an unknown disease and the loss of her job because of her poor health, she seeks the grandparents she had never known. She is an interesting combination of strong and unsure of herself. The anxiety she experiences causes her difficulty in making decisions. And she feared to reveal her newly-found faith in Jesus to her father.

Several hard subjects are addressed in this story. Chronic, undiagnosed illness. Estranged Family. Trust. Each is handled with tact and the answers point to faith in the Lord.

In addition to Morgan and Skye's issues, her parents are a bit...hippyish. Naming all their children after shades of blue is only the tip of the iceberg!

Not everything is resolved in the story, by design. The books in the Hope Ranch series build on each other and yet close with satisfying conclusions so they could be read alone though they are best read as a series.

Another great, overtly Christian story.
I really like these stories where hurt people some to Christ... and still hurt.
Becoming a Christian doesn't mean suddenly life is easy.
It means you don't have to carry the load alone. It means you can trust that this valley has a purpose, even if you never realize what that purpose is.

Skye is already a Christian, but she's got other issues, medical as well as having been hurt by her old church.
Morgan is also a solid Christian... He's not sure what to think of his boss' grandkids suddenly showing up and... something's not right with Skye.

And then there's more...

This was a great story with a lot happening on several fronts, but not so much that the reader gets lost or overwhelmed... It's just that life sometimes comes at you that way.

Very entertaining read! The h and her family were an interesting lot: their parents may have loved them but I detected a definite sense of 'distance' being the optimum choice. The siblings were open and honest with each other even though they had parental role models who were anything but. The grandparents were open and loving.

The H was....impressive and then impressive again and again.

The h's father was toxic and, while loved, was avoided by his children. He was an enigma. A liar and a cheater who bullied and controlled others. The H's mother was also a mystery: she knowingly accepted her husband's affairs...but at what personal cost. I can sense that God will enter their lives and hopefully change them for the better.

Elizabeth Maddrey’s book Hope For Tomorrow:
Betsy and Wayne are truly inspirational people filled with love. When Skye shows up at Hope Ranch unexpectedly she doesn’t know what to expect. Morgan is trying to figure out what is happening with all of the grandkids showing up all of a sudden. Skye is struggle with health issues and no job. Elizabeth Maddrey is a amazing author she will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. You will feel God working throughout this wonderful book. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

Skye arrives at her grandparents, Wayne and Betsy’s ranch, unannounced. Trying to figure out what’s going on with her life, meeting the grandparents, Morgan, Maria, Calvin and the other 2 ranch hands, Joaquin and Tommy. We see Cyan, Royal and meet Elise and Martin. Azure and Matt, along with Indigo make a brief appearance. This story draws you right in to the comfort and hospitality of Wayne and Betsy, plus the ranch setting. Another beautiful story, vibrant faith without preachiness, and easy to relate to characters that is hard to put down.

Inspiring, page turning story with some unexpected twists and turns: spring in New Mexico, twins, DNA testing, heart disease, gaming, horses, summer camp, reading preferences and Ecclessiastes. Delightful well developed characters - the Hewitt clan, especially grandparents Wayne and Betsy Hewitt, plus reconnecting to the Peacock Hills series. Well written romance with a hint of suspense and medical facts.

A touching romance

A wonderfully touching love story. The characters felt so real and therefore relatable. I love the grandparents who live out their faith with their easy acceptance of their grandchildren, as well as the way their employees are like family to them. I loved Morgan and Skye and thoroughly enjoyed reading how they worked out everything and got their HEA. A great series! I can't wait to read the next Hope Ranch book.

Hope for Tomorrow

Skye has come to Hope Ranch because she has no other place to go. She faces health problems and unemployment. Morgan is an ex cop who traded his badge and gun in to take care of the horses at Hope Ranch. After experiencing a painful divorce he is not looking for romance. What happens when God has other plans?

Shades of Blue: Skye

To be a twin and the youngest of 5 can be hard, everyone wants to "watch over you", forgetting that you are an adult in your own right.

Skye suffers from a disease someone in my family was just diagnosed with, it made for interesting reading, trying to understand the feelings (both physical and emotional) involved.

A worthwhile read

An easy read - yes there are family problems, relational misunderstanding and health issues, but it is all underpinned with a strong faith in Jesus, who gives us hope for tomorrow.
