"Sniff, sniff, sniff." I followed the scent.

This story is told from the point of view of the dog. No people on these pages, mainly birds.

A little mystery, a bit of nature study, and an introduction to imprinting.

Unlike many stories for kids, the ending of this one isn't likely to be obvious to young readers.

"Turkeys Together" is a lovely story about working together. Dog goes out looking for birds, he finds some new friends along the way. Mother turkey thinks dog is stealing her eggs. Dog hunts around the wood and discovers another turkey that has the same problem as mother turkey. Dog convinces the two turkeys to share one nest. The eggs end up hatching and the dog and the two mother turkeys enjoy the babies.

teaching application- This is good book for readers to practice partner reading. The students could also predict what will happen before they finish reading. The book has chapters so it makes nice stopping points for charting or predicting.

This was such a good book! The dog helps out and puts the mother turkey before himself and resolves her conflict. This book is a longer book for those who are learning to read chapter books. A motivational book for children to learn to be selfless and learn that good comes from helping others. Semester II

Told from the point of view of a pointer, this is a simple (yet complex) story of a dog trying to stop the eggs being stolen from two wild turkey nests. Everybody loves to eat turkey -- even before the turkeys hatch.

For such a short story, Wallace manages to pack a lot of meaning. When the mockingbird is asked to identify himself, he replies, "I'm a big, mean, strong mockingbird." Anyone who knows mockingbird knows that they are anything but. Which makes you wonder what happened to the mockingbird to be so defensive.

One flaw of the story is that the egg thief is never identified, despite the hints on the back cover that one would be. The illustrations give a strong hint, but it's not explicitly given in the text. The dog is especially well done. Apparently, the model was a real pointer named Jack. Have to admit -- he's looking just a bit baffled on the cover.

Also not mentioned is why Dog is basically living in the woods, despite wearing a green collar. Yeah, I know -- dog care is not the point of the book, but since a wandering dog usually equals a dead dog in the real world, I can't help but obsess over this.

The watercolor illustrations are far better than the text. They are incredible. They are finely detailed, yet have human expressions ... except for that mockingbird.

A dog's narrative on helping a mother turkey with her eggs. It's a charming little story about nature. For a full lesson, you can follow it up with a short study on turkeys.
