Williamsville Inn #4

The Cupid Crawl

Rate this book
What happens when a confirmed hook-up app user falls for a man who is his polar opposite?

Carter Walsh will be alone on Valentine’s Day, and his plans include a candy sampler of hook ups.

But after learning about the Cupid Crawl—a bar crawl covering a half dozen bars, gay and straight—he changes his plans.

During the crawl, he runs into:
An ex-co-worker nemesis who resurrects—loudly—an unfortunate nickname she bestowed upon him years before.
Several hot men eager for a quick hook up.
And one man absolutely not Carter’s type, but who manages to pique his interest and, possibly, steal his heart.

The Cupid Crawl is a funny, sweet, and steamy opposites attract, slight age gap story that takes place in the Williamsville Inn series world, and features characters from the Christmas stories Snowflakes and Song Lyrics by Hank Edwards and Snowstorms and Second Chances by Brigham Vaughn.

This was really sweet but I really struggled to connect with the main characters and I wasn’t very invested in their story.

Brief summary
Carter lives a life of hooking up and he admits he’s lonely and wants more but he sticks to Grindr because thats all he knowns. He does the cupid crawl for Valentine’s day, it’s a bar hopping event. He meets Harry there. Carter keeps going to bar bathroom’s to hook up and Harry keeps interupting him. They then talk and fall in love.

First, since the setting was a bar crawl, it took me until 39 % of the book before I figured who Carter’s love interest was. I know that him being into multiple people makes sense in the bar crawl setting but I would have liked for his actual love interest to be easy to figure out. I don’t really like reading about characters who are not the main characters in books, so I wasn’t very interested in the other possible love interests.

Second, Carter spent a lot of the first part of the book having sex with other people. I don’t like when main characters in books have sex with other people on page. I’m a very jealous person and it really triggers my jealousy. Also i’m not the biggest fan of other characters in books, I prefer to only read about the main characters, so the side hook ups (it was before the main characters got together but they still knew each other) just don’t do it for me.

Third, I loved Harry, he was so sweet and everything he said made me swoon. He was open and honest and wasn’t afraid of taking a chance, I loved him so much.

Fourth, I couldn’t really connect to Carter but I did like how he had self esteem issues and couldn’t believe that Harry could be into him, I could definitely relate to him.

Side note, there was a mention about how good looking Charlie Coyle is and I very much approve of this fantacizing about hockey players thing.

This was really sweet but I just couldn’t connect to Carter as a character, so I never lost myself in the book because of it.

I received a copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

This was a good story. I’ve enjoyed all three of the Williamsville Inn stories that I’ve read. There’s only one left and I’m planning to read it right away. These are sweet love stories with little angst, but a nice slow burn. I loved Carter, sometimes known as Carter the Farter. He was the perfect match for Harry who’s a little older and a little fashion challenged.

The Cupid Crawl by Hank Edwards is a pleasant, feel good Valentine’s Day novel.

The story revolves around Carter Walsh, a self-doubting young man who, after throwing out his cheating ex, is now depending on Grindr for hook-ups.

For many years Chase has spent Valentine’s Day with his best friend, Will Johnson. But Will has recently married Rex Garland, a matinee idol singing sensation, and this year Will and Rex will be attending an awards ceremony in LA.

Rather than spending the day alone, one of Chase’s co-workers convinces him to sign up for a Valentine’s Day pub crawl, the Cupid Crawl.

Much of the book focuses on Chase’s seemingly unreasonable reaction to an unfortunate sophomoric nickname given him be a former coworker, ‘Dizzy, Frizzy,’ Lizzy Foster. Of course, Chase runs into Lizzy on the Cupid Crawl’s first bar stop where she repeatedly yells out her adolescent nickname for Chase. To complicate matters, Lizzy is accompanied by a handlebar mustached stranger named Harry who seems to be everywhere Chase goes.

The Cupid Crawl is filled with characters interacting with Chase and Harry both in and out of several of the bars' men’s rooms.

As in any good romantic comedy, after much angst on Chase’s part, this one ends with a happy ending.

Carter is an out-gay man who's pining just a bit for a steady guy. Approaching thirty, he's had plenty of fun with hook-up apps but his bestie Will has recently gotten married to a sexy out singer, Rex, and their goo-goo eyes are causing Carter to lament his no-strings life.

He's expecting to spend his first Valentine's alone in a long time. Carter and Will usually went out together to get some drinks and keep one another company, but Will is out of town with Rex this year. So, instead of going out alone, Carter plans to make a 3-day weekend of Grindr hookups. He's all set until his very married and harried co-worker talks up an event she used to attend as a single: The Cupid Crawl. It's a bar crawl of some Boston spots--straight and gay-friendly--with giveaways and the opportunity to meet like-minded singles. Carter isn't really feeling it, but when he awakens on Valentine's Day he learns that most of his go-to Grindr pals are otherwise occupied. Out of sheer loneliness Carter opts to join the Cupid Crawl.

And, boy is he regretting it. He runs into an old co-worker, Lizzie, who dubbed him "Carter the Farter" years ago, and she's pretty much drunk and obnoxiously shouting this all around the bar. Humiliated from the start, Carter isn't in a mood to make nice with Lizzie's "keeper," an unstylish, platonic friend called Harry. Turns out Harry (and his waxed porn-mustache) is pansexual, and a decent guy. Carter's not a fan, at first, even as friendly and engaging as Harry is. Carter has an acerbic humor and Harry gives him a lot of challenging chat, when Carter isn't hopping on Grindr and hooking up with dudes on the crawl.

This book didn't read as romantic, at first. Carter's really a bit self-centered, and he's so used to getting his sex-fix without it meaning much more than mutual release. Harry is SO not his usual guy, what with his middle-part hair and barely-trying t-shirt, but the more that Carter finds vapid men, or selfish hook-ups, the more he begins to appreciate the real-talk he gets from Harry. And, it's clear that others are seeing how Harry is into Carter--more so than Carter does, in any case.

Carter wants to ditch this whole nightmare, especially once he's humiliated and left hanging by a couple of hook-ups. Will chats to him via FaceTime, trying to keep his spirits up, and Vic, the crawl organizer, is promising awesome raffle prizes the longer Carter stays. Carter keeps believing his hype, that he and Harry can't be suited for one another, and he even tells another guy to go for Harry. Much to his regret. Lonely of his own making, Carter FINALLY gets the idea that he's letting a good man walk off for superficial reasons, perhaps because he's a bit commitment-challenged from a bad relationship some years before. It's a Cupid miracle that Carter makes the right moves before the end of the crawl. Still, there's conflict. Much like the time-honored story, this Cinderfella doesn't know how to contact his possible prince once the night comes to an abrupt end.

It's a fun ending, with Grindr "coming" to the rescue. And, plenty of cameos from other Williamsville heroes. Again, totally fine to read this as a standalone. Carter begins being judgey and not super-likable, even as we can empathize with his loneliness. His antics on the Crawl are funny and cringey, and he gains some sympathy points just for his erotic misfortunes. It's clear that Carter has self-esteem issues, and it was good to see him grow past that a bit on that crawl. The juxtaposition of meaningless hookups with passionate kissing (and later lovemaking) really drove the romance arc forward in the second half of the book. I was definitely rooting for Carter to get his head screwed on correctly and accept the interest and affection of a good man--even if he didn't tick off all the attraction markers on the first meeting. His attraction for Harry wasn't instant, but it grew and grew with each connection. I liked Carter a LOT more in the end, when he finally let down his guard and started honestly examining his life choices. There is totally a happy ending waiting, as well as awesome reconnections with other characters from the series for readers who've been following along with the previous books.

It’s as if this author knew the way to my heart was through sarcasm, wit, and easy, fun banter, then served it all up in this wonderful book. Hank Edwards had my strict attention from the moment Carter uttered his first bout of sarcasm, and he kept it until the book ended. I read it in one sitting. No putting it aside for another book or even a quick game of solitaire. I was in a sarcasm trance, and Carter was the hypnotist.

This is Carter’s story and is only told in his POV. The story finds our hero making plans for his first Valentine's spent without his best friend, Will. Will is married now, so Carter was on his own. His go-to plan? Grindr. It’s one that he’s familiar with, so he is going with it. That is until a coworker told him about a little event called The Cupid Crawl. That’s the moment, although he had no idea, that his life was about to change course.

This book is one man’s journey to allowing himself to have what he’s always really wanted, and to find the courage to go after it. His biggest hurdle was himself. This book is written in a way that makes you feel like you’re along for the ride as well. The flow of the story was consistent and didn’t have any parts that I was even tempted to skim over. The quick wit and easy banter made it easy to sit and just get lost in the story. Even the unexpected, little dark angel was a fun highlight to the story. She was like the little comedic relief to an already funny bit. Which was awesome. I would want her as a friend in real life. And Oh. My. God. Can we talk about THAT KISS in the shuttle? The heat level was a solid 5. Hank Edwards wrote that kiss in a way YOU will feel it. You will reread that section, too. Trust me. Holy moly.

This is book 4 is the series. Hank Edwards wrote books 3 and 4, and Brigham Vaughn wrote books 1 and 2. This book can be read as a standalone, because it gives you enough of the backstory so you don’t feel lost for long. That said, the books overlap each other, timewise. You will also meet a couple of characters that are in another book, that you don’t get the backstory on. Since the Williamsville Inn is the common factor in all four books, it will enhance your reading experience if you read the series in order. I recommend reading book 3 at the very least. Hank Edwards is an author who is new to me, but I have a sneaky suspicion this won’t be the last book of his I read.

The Cupid Crawl is, plain and simple, a rom-com that will delight from beginning to end. Is this the kind of romantic comedy you might find on Hallmark? Doubtful. To be honest, Cupid is way better than just another Valentine's Hallmark-y cliche. "Carter the Farter" is hilarious and yet you can just feel Carter wanting the ground to open up and pull him under when it's announced in public where he's hoping to find some meaningless hook-ups. You can't help but be in equal parts laughing and wanting to wrap him up and tell him it was long ago and nobody cares.

As for Carter, well at times he's a hard pill to take but he quickly gets sucked into your heart and just want him to find his HEA. In Harry you know he just might find that HEA if everything aligns, okay you know they'll find each other to be more than just a hook-up but it's the getting there that is where all the fun lies.

I can't help but feel the more I say the less fun I make it sound, that the story appears to be cliche and formulaic and it isn't so I think I'll just end with pushing the point that The Cupid Crawl is a delightful holiday gem. So whether you read this as a Valentine's story or as a romance later in the year, you won't be sorry. I should also note that I have not yet read Hank Edwards' Christmas entry to the Williamsville Inn series but I don't feel lost in any way, is their a question of Carter's friendship with Will? Maybe but I wasn't lost, I didn't feel that anything was missing.

After a bad break-up a few several months back, Carter relied on anonymous hookups to have at least his physical needs taken care off. It saddened me, though, to notice that he used those hookups as an unconscious defense mechanism against getting hurt again. He proved it at the beginning of the Cupid Crawl, when he didn't even try to talk to the other people there, instead spending his time separated from them and looking for yet another fleeting experience.

For various reasons, the first stops of The Cupid Crawl were embarrassing and disappointing for Carter. But they showed me his snark and dry humor, his hopes and most of all, his fears and insecurities. He felt alone and invisible, even in the middle of laughing, joyful people, which put in stark relief, at least to him, the reasons he didn't belong there or why he'd have been better off by himself. Yet someone DID see him, a man Carter really saw, really appreciated, later on.

A connection, a spark if interest, someone to trust again and to build a future with. Carter didn't expect it to happen during The Cupid Crawl, and I almost lost faith that he would allow himself to. But he did, and I cheered so much when Harry turned out to be the perfect man for him.

Recommend.

This is Book 5 of the Williamville Inn series, but once again, it's a standalone. The story starts out with references to characters in the previous books with a bit of their back story, but it's not necessary to read the prior books in order to enjoy this one.

Carter Walsh has been single for a while, having only care-free hook-ups with men he has met through Grindr. He used to go bar hopping on Valentine's Day with his best friend and drinking buddy Will, but Will has recently got married and is away with his husband. It is now Valentine's Day and Carter's alone, wishing he had found someone in his life like Will has found. But Carter is not staying home,he goes out and expects to have some meaningless hook-ups. Through an acquaintance, he learns of "The Cupid Crawl", a bar crawl where you go from bar to bar, and you can meet other gay singles and he decides to do that instead. At the very first bar he meets Harry, an odd looking guy who seems to be very nice, but Harry is not someone he's attracted to, although it becomes obvious that Harry is very attracted to Carter. Carter tries to brush him off and continues with his mindless hookups not realizing that Harry is a good guy and he shouldn't let him get away. Their relationship doesn't come easily, and there are self-imposed obstacles in their way, so will they eventually be able to find their HEA?

I‌ ‌received‌ ‌a‌ ‌copy‌ ‌of‌ ‌The Cupid Crawl ‌by‌ ‌Hank Edwards via‌ ‌IndiGo‌ ‌Marketing‌ ‌&‌ ‌Design‌ ‌in‌ ‌exchange‌ ‌for‌ ‌an‌ ‌honest‌ ‌review.‌ While this book is part of a series, it can be enjoyed without having read the other books in the Williamsville Inn saga. Whether he knows it or not, the main character Carter has reached that stage of adulthood where being single and living the bars/hook-up life has grown old. There is something about approaching thirty and seeing all your friends in happy relationships that gets to a person. Luckily, Carter realizes he would like to try something more than superficial before he goes on the Cupid Crawl. While trying hard to connect with his typical pick-up, he meets some interesting people who help him move forward with his life. While my favorite character was Goth Ivy, the man Carter finds interesting was intriguing too. I’m wondering if Vic, who put together the Cupid Crawl, will get a story too. A thoroughly upbeat story for downbeat times.

I usually put my personal notes about a story at the end of a posting, but this needs to be said: if my night had started out like Carter’s did - I would have gone home (laugh). Hank Edwards puts Carter through his paces in Cupid Crawl. Holy sugar.

The poor guy goes through everything from blue balls to seeing stars and Edwards makes you smile through it all. At first, I had no clue who Carter was going to end up with and neither did Carter (laugh). This book is so much fun, a lot more fun than some had during the Crawl.

Edwards created a secondary cast that still has me hooked and I want more! I want Vic to find some hot guy at the Leprechaun Crawl. Rob to fall for some during May fling? Then Edwards needs to do something special with Ivy - what a mystery of an angel there.

Valentine’s Day may be over, but love is still in the air and Edwards has packaged it in the Cupid Crawl.

I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.

Carter and Harry meet at an event on Valentine’s Day. Carter is tired of meaningless hookups but doesn’t see any other way to meet someone who might come to matter to him.

A pub crawl is an interesting idea to meet new people. However, I just couldn’t really get into the attraction between Harry and Carter. There were a few funny places and definitely some annoying participants. It wasn’t until after they met again that their romance jelled for me. I did think Vic was cupid in disguise.

This was a nice story about finally finding Mr. Right. I like the authors writing. I’ve read several of his books and they are all well done.

Loved this book. An entertaining opposites attract romance. Carter usually spends his Valentine's night with his best friend. This year his best friend has gotten married and is unavailable. Carter hears about The Cupid Crawl, a bar crawl consisting of six different bars, through work. Not wanting to be alone and nothing going on in his hookup apps he decides to attend. He meets Harry right away. Harry is not normally Carter's type. As the night progresses they spend more time getting to know one another. Can this lead to more? A very enjoyable read and highly entertaining. I highly recommend.

I think what I like about the stories in the Williamsville Inn universe is that the characters who are featured are not expecting what they find. In this story Carter is kind of over Valentine's day and the hook-up scene. Still he indulges in the pub crawl, maybe unconsciously hoping to spark some...hope. He has seen several of his friends find love and contentment. Lucky for him he finds Harry at a time in his life when he was ready for more. Harry is nothing that Carter is looking for but just what he needs. Another thoroughly enjoyed story in this series!

When your on a pub crawl, do you need a checklist? Harry and Carter met at the beginning of the crawl. Their opening conversation is hilarious as heck! They have a series of encounters that are flirty, friendly and informative. Carter had a series of conversations with new people, some good, others not so much. Carter and Harry connected on a next level plane. Will they keep in contact? Did they exchange digits? Did Carter meet a lot of keepable friends? Nice story. Truly funny. Nice group of potential friends. Nice to hear how Will and Rex are doing. Great series! Well done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Sweet and snarky with a lot of adorable moments

I loved this book by Hank.
We met Carter as Will’s best friend in the Hank’s first book set at Williamsville Inn. Here he shines, as a hook up king looking for meaning during a Valentines’ Bar crawl.

This book was hilarious and some of the antics were almost cringe worthy. You could feel Carter’s tension and embarrassment. As we go through each bar, we get closer to who Carter’s Knight is.
This book is so full of charm and sweetness with kicks of snark.

Highly recommend reading

I was so excited to finally get to reads Carter’s story! I absolutely adored him in Snowflakes and Song Lyrics due to the witty and fun banter between him and Will. Their friendship is something I think everyone strives for at least once in their life. I really enjoyed the bar crawl and I found it to be a pretty unique story. I love Harry and Carter together and it was nice hearing about the struggles not just the good side of things. If you like seeing previous characters like I do you’ll also enjoy that about this book.

Carter is lamenting his singleness. He usually spends his time with his best friend Will but he’s recently married. With Will being out of town this year, He decides to go on a three-day Grindr hook up and attends the Cupid Crawl. There he runs into an ex-coworker who calls him “Carter the farter” and things just worse from there. I did like how this was an insta love, but the love grew over time. I really liked Harry. Carter was little hard to swallow at times, but overall I did enjoy the story. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.

**ARC Review**

Ok...this was a fun read. That entire day of the Cupid Crawl was entertaining. I absolutely loved Carter and his shenanigans and his hope in one day finding what his best friend Will got...the love of his life. I really like this because Carter ultimately fell for someone that really wasn't his "type" but someone who had other qualities that brought out his attractiveness. This book cemented me as a Hank Edwards fan and I'm glad I had an opportunity to give this book a go. If you like to laugh and love slow burn romance...this is the book for you.

Cupid's Arrow Hits The Perfect Target.

MM opposites attract, slight age gap, contemporary romance. An easy to read page-turner, can be read as a stand-alone but I personally think maximum enjoyment will be achieved by reading the series. Valentine's Day plans with a difference, Carter's stuck to Grindr to meet men since his last relationship but decides to give the Cupid Crawl event a chance he doesn't expect to meet a man Like Harry there or to be attracted to a man like Harry either. HEA, sweet, snarky, funny and passionate story.

I’ve become a huge fan of Hanks and I’m loving the Williamsville stories, complex characters and would hope that some of the characters will get their own story. Lots of humour, sarcasm and fun. Carter and Harry were a surprise and definite heat with lots of kisses. I couldn’t get enough.

I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book for my honest opinions of which I’m under no obligation to do so. I absolutely recommend this book.

Crawling from bar to bar, Harry and Carter keep meeting up. By the end of the night magic has happened. This adventure encompasses a night of bar crawling but the result is a match definitely made well. The story brings in characters from a previous story which connects the books but also has its own individuality. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

Super sweet and fun book!

Hank Edwards is fairly new to me but I am inlove with his realistic characters and his well developed story lines. His brand of slow burn romance works for me always keeping me engaged, not getting antsy waiting for them to finally get together. This is not always the case with other slow burns. Read this book you won’t be sorry!!

Wasn't sure about this one at first but it got better after the halfway mark. Loved Carters character in the first book but he came across as bad tempered and annoying for the first half of this book.
