She could be his light... If his darkness doesn’t destroy them both.
Bastard and former mercenary Lord Regulus Hargreaves' resolve is crumbling. He's desperate to pay off his debt to the sorcerer who enslaved him, but after two years, he fears he'll never be free of the cursed mark that won't even let him die. Then Lady Adelaide sees past his scarred face and shadowed past, and Regulus’ fading hope rekindles.
But will loving Adelaide while serving the Prince of Shadow and Ash put her in danger?
Adelaide Belanger yearns to use the magical energy within her, but revealing her power could get her killed--like every other mage in the kingdom. When she meets kind and rugged Regulus, she wonders if she has finally found someone to trust with her secret—and her heart. Regulus and Adelaide struggle to protect their romance and keep their secrets from predatory nobles and the devious sorcerer.
By the time their secrets are revealed, it may be too late for them both...and possibly for the kingdom.
The first book in a character-driven sword and sorcery romantic fantasy duology with found family, despicable villains, magic, and hope!
(Content note: Fade-to-black romance. Minimal language. Possible triggers: Series is equivalent to mid to upper PG-13-level; contains violence, torture, depression, reference to SH and a su*c*de attempt, & a SA in book two.)
Selina R. Gonzalez is a Colorado local with mountains in her blood and dreams that top 14,000 feet. She loves swords, fantasy, costumes, bread, history, castles, superheroes, things that sparkle, snark, dogs, dragons, and Jesus—not in that order.
She writes medieval-inspired fantasy with swoon but no on-page spice. She loves writing about relationships—platonic, familial, and romantic—and her books center healthy romances founded on mutual values, trust, and respect between imperfect people who make mistakes but always strive to grow.
Growing up, I read the classics - Robin Hood, King Arthur, Ivanhoe. When I got older, I started reading more contemporary fantasy expecting the same epic, atmospheric, heart-felt adventures, just you know, without the "ye's and thee's." Boy, was I ever disappointed.
Until now!!!
Gonzalez has created a world of adventure, mystery and magic worthy of the great Scott himself. I found myself completely forgetting about time and responsibilities. The settings and characters were so vivid and real, I didn't want to break away and leave their story.
I absolutely loved the pacing. As a thirty something, I find myself disgruntled with stories that leave me feeling drained by their constant demand on my adrenals just so they can claim to be "action-filled." Believe me, this story couldn't have higher stakes or deeper emotion, but the author also mixed in events and moments of whimsy and simple adventure that left my inner child squealing to finally see a tourney again in fantasy and my outer adult grinning like a fool over the matchmaking at dinner, the budding romance at a dance and comradery of brotherhood and family.
I highly recommend this to lovers of fantasy in general, but especially to those of us who remember the classics and wish they'd be reborn. Seriously, I felt like I was in Ivanhoe half the time while reading this and that is basically the highest compliment I can give.
Someone give me a time machine, 'cause there is no way I am lasting until the next book.
4/22--cover is live! I love this cover so much. 😊💚 -- Woo, I am done! Did I reread all of it? No, but I just did a full proofread of the digital file like two months ago, and what I read of the physical proof was in excellent shape. A few little tweaks--nothing that was *incorrect,* just minor changes--and my unofficial proofreader aka my sister didn't notice anything, so... I think I'm happy with it and ready to officially let my baby go off on its own... 2.5 weeks to cover reveal! :D 5.5 weeks to release!
This was everything I wanted it to be and more. It's the perfect blend of epic fantasy and fluffy romance. The story sucks you in and doesn't let go, with a fascinating plot and such a cool magic system.
The characters were far and away my favorite thing. Adelaide is so cool, Regulus is a sweetheart, Dresden and the rest of Reg's squad are my faaaves, Minerva and Gaius are SO cute, I just love everybody. Adelaide and Regulus' relationship was everything, they're so stinking cute!! They actually communicate from each other, and listen to each other, and they're just precious I love them so much.
When the villains drive me as crazy as these did, I know they're well-written. When the magic system makes me as intrigued as this one did, I know it's well-done. Just... everything about this was so perfect I'm obsessed. I wanted to make sure I wrote this review out before I dive into the second one, but basically all I can say is read it.
If you love fantasy, or supportive couples, or unique magic systems, read this book. Go forth and read on, my friends.
“Bold like a tigress.” Regulus chuckled as he cut into the roast duck the servant set on his plate. “That’s wonderful.” “Really?” Adelaide looked at him. “Of course,” he murmured, transfixed by the intensity of her eyes. “Many find boldness…unfeminine,” she said, not breaking eye contact. He couldn’t suppress a snort. “Many people are fools.” “Indeed.”
It was a horrible idea to start this without having the sequel on hand.
Honestly the way Selina manages to combine magical tension, sword fighting, and relaxing romance is astounding. It makes the book a comfortable adventure while pulling at your emotions. ✨
I enjoyed all the little things.
It’s kinda like an old romance novel mixed with magical explosions. *happy sigh*
Watching all the different relationships grow and change dynamics was so entertaining. I laughed with them, cried with them, and chucked knives at Nolan’s head. We’re all best friends now. 😌
Overall I was super enthralled with the plot, setting, and characters. However, the pacing threw me for a loop a couple times, causing me to be ripped from the story. 😞 Beyond that it was enjoyable. ✨
What do I even say about this book??? I'm not usually a fantasy fan, but I knew the characters from Servant Mercenary Brother and so I was excited to give this one a try.
Just like in the prequel, the character shine! There are so many moments that I was laughing so hard I had to put the book down, a lot of deep, raw emotion, and people I just genuinely cared about. And not just the main characters- every side character feels real, I felt connected to them, not just because the main characters cared for them, but because I cared too.
The romance was amazing- some drama but in a way that hightens the story and conflict, a lot of cuteness, some sweet kissy times, and most importantly, a relationship founded on love and respect.
The story also does a great job not just avoiding negative romantic tropes, but also addressing them in a way that feels natural- the author isn't patting herself on the back as she hangs a big neon sign that says "my heroine is progressive, here's her big feminist moment" but instead it's just an integral part of the story and instead of feeling jarring as it often can be, it's refreshing.
The plot is really good! It plods along at a nice pace- not so fast you get lost or miss something if you blink, but not so slow that it feels like rambling. There are 400 pages in this book and the author uses them all well.
Also, side note, but there are so many dress descriptions and they make my heart happy.
I don't know the last time I stayed up so late reading a book because I just *needed* to know what happened next. I felt like a kid again and it was wonderful
As for content- this is a new adult story, but I think mostly because of the characters' ages, rather than content. There are a few intense scenes in terms of plot/thematic things. There's a little bit of kissy times (but nothing close to sexy times). Some language, but all mild, no strong words. From what I understand, book 2 is a little darker, but this one was a light PG-13 for me.
I can't wait to get my hands on book 2 (how will I make it until July? *sobs*). Excited it's releasing on my birthday, it'll make turning 26 a lot better.
In the meantime, this has jumped to my favorite fantasy. The world, the characters, the story, they're all so beautiful. I'm excited to get to revisit the best bits over and over and over again ❤️
Thank you to the author and Wyvern Wing Press for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is one of my anticipated releases for May! And when I got an ARC a happy dance definitely occurred. XD Look for this beauty on May 13, 2020! Okay can we talk about how important communication is?? I LOVE that Regulus and Adelaide talk to one another. There's no unnecessary drama due to miscommunication, which is one of my pet peeves. And Regulus is so trusting of his men. I love them all, from Dresden (sass master) to Percival. Dresden cemented his place in my heart with his postscript to Adelaide. ;) The family relationships in this book are so loving. Adelaide is supported by her sister Minerva and brother-in-law Gaius, who basically adopts her as a sister. Regulus has his men and Harold, who are like brothers and son to him. Found family is an amazing trope and can never be overdone. Because I'm diabolical like that, I did see some of the plot twists coming. Which just made me more anxious as I waited for them to happen. XD Though, I did NOT see the ending coming. Why you gotta hurt me like that? In short, if you love brooding baes, sassy sidekicks, magical badass women, intrigue, and found family, this book is definitely for you.<3
Chapter one gave me DND vibes, have I ever really played DND? (not exactly), but I got the impression that it was a fun, though somewhat painful quest/destroy some evil creatures book. I was wrong.
Not about the pain, there is quite a lot of physical and emotional pain (not that I mind ;) ), but this here is a romance, fantasy book!
(Which I think I diiiiid know, but still, it is not a DND book though it did somewhat feel like it).
I also felt Pride and Prejudice vibes. ;)
I laughed. I enjoyed the action. I want to slap the villians.
I have three complaints:
1. Some romance mushy stuff. Not terrible, but what I really didn't like was NOLAN. (I know a Nolan in real life, no hard feelings real life Nolan) but FICTIONAL Nolan needs to go DOWN. I guess a bully/a little bit racist/jerks are somewhat needed in stories, but when they touch girls without permission? Like waist, shoulder, back, etc. etc. so not as inappropriate as it could have been, but I DO NOT LIKE. YOU CREEP. I guess the story did what it needed to for me to hate him, but I don't think I approve of it...
2. There was language :( not a ton, but more than a little (though less than a lot). If that makes sense lol. I was thankful that God was replaced with another name, though there was still taking that "god's" name in vein I thiiink and it was an obvious replacement of our God.
3. I like the "girl saves guy" trope, but I felt like it happened a little too much in the end and that she was a little too powerful compared to my dude.
So technically maybe this is 4.5 stars from me. I still haven't nailed down how I rate things so *shrugs*
There is also sorcery, magic etc. in this book and it ends on a cliffhanger so I got the second book asap.
Regulus is amazing and Dresdon. All the good peoplez are *hugs* I like.
I could have read this in one day, (it took 3 cuz I was doing stuff), but this was very enjoyable!
Well, let me first just say that this cover is GORGEOUS! -That combined with an equally great story makes this bookworm one happy camper😁😊.
Clean Rating 4.5-5/5 (Depending on preference) The violence might be considered gorey in a couple spots, but nothing too bad, Just realistically detailed -IMO- Some mild kissing..that's about it.
A very enjoyable fantasy about a magically enslaved mercenary struggling to do what is right for both the woman he loves and his friends against impossible odds.
Wow. Wow wow wow. I have no words. My first read by Selina was A Thieving Curse and I honestly was excited about that one it was a Beauty and the Beast retelling. I had seen her other books on bookstagram, but wasn’t sure about them. • Well, I should have picked this book up way sooner! Regulus, Dresden, Adelaide, and the rest were so fun! (Some of Drez lines had me laughing so hard I snorted) The storyline was intriguing, and I loved the fierce love shown throughout, both romantic and platonic. • The knight wee just ... oh man, I love them. Adelaide’s sister was so sweet and protective, as is her brother-in-law. • Content warning: I would say this book is for an older audience, as some of the scenes were a little intense. A coupe of swear words are also in the book, but nothing horrible. One of the characters is mentioned as compromise young ladies, but nothing is described or shown. • Overall a fantastic read and I cannot wait for the next book to show up in my mailbox today 😂 • 5/5 ⭐️ Ages 16 and up
I was excited to read this one because I'm a big fan of romantic fantasy, especially romantic fantasy with adorable characters who treat each other right. This book was underbaked in some ways, but I was totally pulling for Regulus and Adelaide, and I admired Selina Gonzalez's dedication to throwing ever bigger and worse problems their way.
I'm so happy I took the time to read this book! Amazing cover. Beautiful writing. Medieval settings. Memorable characters. Dangerous plot. Humor throughout. I highly suggest it :D
This book was fantastic! I love all the characters and just how real and amazing they all are. And I love to hate the villains who both can die and burn in hell for all eternity for all I care, even though that’s too nice of a death for them. Ahem. But I digress.
Regulus is a precious, amazing, strong, soft, genuine guy I wish existed in real life because I would TOTALLY fall in love with him (which I kinda already have, haha!), and he is just so adorable and vulnerable and just all around AMAZING, okay? Definitely one of my top fave male heroes of all time. 😍😍
And Adelaide is just as amazing, and I really, really wish I could be just like her because she is AWESOME. She’s kind, compassionate, and gentle while also being a fierce kick butt fighter, stubborn, and strong who won’t let anyone push her around her in the slightest. One of my new top fave female characters of all time—I just ADORE her. 😍😍
Adelaide and Regulus are just so sweet and perfect and swoon worthy together and just, just, just are THE BEST, and I love them tons, okay?!?! (As if you couldn’t already tell 🤪)
Minerva and Gaius are just perfect as well, and so real and supportive of Adelaide, as is Dresden who is such a great friend to Regulus through all this hell. Regulus’ other knights are fantastic and so funny together while also being loyal, brave, and such a bro band I adore to pieces! This author has a real talent for writing real, flawed, adorable, yet believable characters. ☺️😍
The world I really like as the author combines well known fantasy creatures with her own unique world which I thought was really neat and may try one day in one of my own stories.
Also, the tournament was really fun as I’ve only read one other book with one in it (The Captive Maiden by Melanie Dickerson), so it was really fun and epic, and I love how it was used to draw Regulus and Adelaide together.
The climax had me on the edge of my seat, Nolan is a total moron who needs to be taken out NOW, and the way the book ended made me VERY grateful to already have Staff of Nightfall on my shelf.
The whole book was amazing and I have no complaints about it. Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend! Excuse me while I go devour Staff of Nightfall now...
Content: clean/sweet romance with only a bit of kissing, damn and hell are used a few times as is bastard as the old style term for an illegitimate child not a cuss word, magic and sorcery with clear lines drawn between good magic vs. evil magic, with evil magic a character uses it to possess/control another’s body, some blood and fighting, several characters get beat up/badly injured
Cliches heaped upon cliches, poor grammar, main characters I hated almost immediately (one of which felt like a self insert and the other felt like the author's Ideal Man™), so many plotholes and problematic messages and melodrama and things that overall just didn't make sense, or would never take place in a medieval world. If i started a rant about everything wrong with this book i would run out of space in 10 minutes max so I'll just keep this short. I admire the author's self confidence in publishing a fantasy novel but honestly it was just too ...well, /bad/. There isn't a single redeemable aspect of it, in my opinion, every single page was a fresh source of cringe for me. I just...i can't. I was gifted an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I'm really sorry to the author, but I'm being completely honest here. The book does have some fans so obviously my opinion is not the only one, but if your tastes and standards in literature are in any way similar to mine, do NOT pick up this book.
This was a little bit more focused on the romance than the titular Prince, but it was interesting. Solid world building and magic system. It didn't always hold my attention so it took a little while to get through it, but a good choice for fantasy romance fans.
It has been literal years since I stayed up past midnight to finish reading a book. It is 2:30 AM. I am going to suffer when I have to get up later but it was so entirely worth it.
From the first chapter, I fell in love with Gonzalez's characters and world. Not only did she perfectly balance action and humor, she also included beautiful scenes of love and self-sacrifice.
Regulas' pain wrenched my heart in two and I was rooting for him from the beginning. I loved Adelaide's fiery spirit, but soft, caring heart. And Dresden! We all need a Dresden in our life!
This story was intricate in its depth, but also fun and entertaining. I enjoyed the playful flirting and banter between Regulus and Adelaide. The tournament was the BEST! And I enjoyed the band of mercenaries turned knights.
Prince of Shadow and Ash is a blend of A Knight's Tale, The Hobbit, and, dare I say, a little Pride and Prejudice? (Looking at you snobby nobles!)
I absolutely adored everything about it!

**Thank you to the author for providing me with a eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review**
I loved this book! This was on my list of most anticipated releases of 2020, and it did not disappoint! From about 20% into the book, I was totally hooked, but it only got better as the story went on!! I LOVE Adelaide and Regulus sooo dang much! These two, you guys!
Honestly I can’t recommend this book enough! It’s got everything: action, danger, magic, banter, romance, and fun! Plus, it’s a clean read, which I really appreciated. 5/5 stars for sure!! Can’t wait until the sequel comes out!!
First off, I love this portrayal of a woman who can defend herself as needed, but who doesn't feel the need to constantly show up the men around her or prove how tough she is. She does occasionally complain about the men around her being overprotective, but even that is fairly minimal compared to the obnoxious levels that are common for this type of character. She doesn't even complain about wearing skirts! (I don't really understand her objection to sleeves though... *shrugs*)
I did have a mild mismatch of my taste to the writing style in a few ways, but my main complaint about this book is that the author actually did her job TOO well, and I found the main antagonist so squicky and irritating that I had to keep taking breaks from the book so my stomach would unknot, and I was desperately wishing someone would just stab him in the throat.
Will definitely be reading the next book (not just because of the suspenseful ending, though that might affect how quickly I get to it!) but I do hope that someone throws Nolan off a cliff sooner rather than later.
Aside from the usual death, violence and such, this book does contain some depictions of animal death and injury, a couple of kissing scenes, reference to a suicide attempt, veiled reference to sexual situations, and also Nolan Carrick. (It's hard to categorize his transgressions accurately in terms of content warnings, but think in the realm of bullying, harassment, stalking, and toxic relationship, and you've got the general idea.)
The only things that made it not 5 stars: 1) a few too many expository descriptions of people and clothing, and 2) a little bit of slow pacing at the beginning
But those are very minor things. This book has a LOT going for it. An adorable (and healthy) romance, an adorable (and hilarious) bromance, a truly hateful antagonist, and a well-woven plot. Drez made me laugh out loud more times than I can count. Adelaide is the epitome of “fierce female” in actions and personality, but also has more of a personality than just that, which I think many “fierce female” characters these days miss out on. Regulus alternately made me want to give him a big hug or many firm prods in the obvious direction.
I would recommend this for fans of both YA and adult fantasy, especially if you like stories that are heavy on the romance without that being the entire plot.
I have added these characters to my list of precious characters beans.🥰(My favorite term of endearment, for those who don’t know me well lol)
Well, all except *avoids spoilers* - I DESPISE HIM WITH ALL OF MY BEING😤
But anyway, aside from BAD DUDE 1 and WORSE BAD DUDE 2, the characters and story in Prince of Shadow and Ash are PHENOMENAL!!😍😍😍
Seriously.
To be honest, I started this book skeptical (Anna Augustine recommended the series to me so I knew I’d probably end up loving it😉), especially when the first half was slow. BUT BUT BUT - Selina Gonzalez was just taking that time to build the story untillllll
💥BAM💥
things took off. Then I could put it down and am SO EXCITED TO START THE NEXT ONE!!! Have I already been working on my Pinterest board? You bet. I am obsessed now. (Thanks, Anna😂)
And THE BROMANCE and LOYALTY and message of LOVE and GOODNESS - I loved the themes and lessons and everything woven into the story. It’s so beautiful to see pure love🥹💖 *fangirl heart bursts from all the feels*
All that to say, IF YOU EVEN REMOTELY LIKE swoony romance, bromance, pure and unconditional love, knights, fantasy creatures, adventure, high stakes, PAIN AND EMOTIONAL TURMOIL, adorable character friendships and relationships, happy feels, magic, and/or a week written fantasy book, then PRINCE OF SHADOW AND ASH IS FOR YOU!😁
Content: the romance only goes as far as kissing, but there is allusions to scandals from people’s pasts; there’s quite a bit of blood and violence, but any violence that is in bad blood is frowned upon (basically only defense and no unnecessary killing or injuring on the good guys part); past trauma and injuries are present; the sorcerer controls Regulus sometimes and he hurts people; there’s threats and physical threats. So yeah, plenty of violence but I didn’t find it to be too much. Language-wise, Regulus is the illegitimate son of a lord so he’s called a b—-ard multiple times, d—n is used a few times (maybe 3?), h-ll is used once, and it’s said that “he/she cursed”. There’s also mages and sorcerers, but that’s typical in fantasy. Recommend for older teens (around 17) and up.
I read this one on a recommendation from a friend, and boy it did not disappoint! From the first moment the characters stepped onto the page, I was interested in their stories, concerned with their struggles, and cheering their victories great and small. The world felt richly developed, with mentions of fairy tale-esque creatures that provided depth rather than taking over the plot. I especially appreciated the solid relationships between the main characters and the side characters; sibling and silbing-like relationships are difficult to find in many books, and this story absolutely delivered on that account. There were a few moments where I had to suspend disbelief a bit in order to go along with the plot (specifically regarding the female MC's magical abilities and the limitations thereof), but the interactions between characters were genuine enough that I didn't mind the occasional hiccup.
All in all, this story read like an updated version of a fairy tale or legend, and I was very intrigued to see where the story would take the characters next.
From the moment I started this book, I knew that it was going to be good. Little did I know how wrong I was...this story is SPECTACULAR! I cannot get over how well done every thing is—from the plot down to the characterization. Creating a fantasy world is hard, and Selina does it so perfectly in this first book. I was so caught up in the story and the slow burn romance that I read through my lunch break several times in a row.
I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book because that cliff hanger still has me on the edge of my seat!
What a hidden gem! With a brutal and intriguing start this fantasy book has dragons, goblins, sorcerers, knights and a whole host of other characters.
The two main characters are very likeable and the romance slow burning and believable. There is action from the start and it never let's up.
The only things i wasn't keen on were the sorcerers pact got explained far too late in the book and the cartoon villian was a bit too silly to be taken seriously but with the cliffhanger i'm eager to see what happens in the next book.
It is complex enough to keep you interested and challenged, but not so much so that you get bogged down in names and details. This book has a great medieval setting with castles and knights and armor and magic and revenge and also a beautiful love story. The lead character finds himself in multiple situations where he has to choose between two evils, but still demonstrates his honest and upright character. As soon as I finished, I ordered the second book in the series!
I could NOT put this down! The lovable characters hooked me from the start, the tight action kept me anxiously turning pages, while the romance sent my shiper's heart soaring. If you're looking for a fresh take on the classic medieval quest story with plenty of emotion, found family, and strong A Knights Tale vibes, this series is for you!
The characters are fantastic, I loved the dynamics and romance and the motivations and plot. Just overall a very good read, do recommend and I can’t wait for the sequel.
Actual rating is might be 4.5 but I only detract that much because I didn’t like the use of the g-slur, which was only used in historical context. The rest of the story was absolutely wonderful.
This story has lots of heartfelt tension; the poor heroes; we wish they could get a break! As with all good quests, however, it's not an easy one, but it's worth it. This book has everything: magic, epic fight scenes, action, and romance. I'm not a big romance reader, and yet the romance did not get in the way of the rest of the story. It was well-done, well-written, and well-paced. One thing you should know: you can't stop with this book! The second book (equally wonderful) feels more like continuation of this story than a sequel. The story really isn't complete with out it. I felt like this was more like one book split in two than it was two distinct stories. But they're both great, so that just means more for us readers. :-)
OMG. Bridgerton meets ACOTAR. But I’d say more for young adult (much less sex). And holy cliff hanger!!! Immediately searching for the second book. Best book of the year so far? Easily top 3!
