A really exciting series! An absolute knock out!

This series is a total knockout! It was some of the best books I've read this last 2 years, and I read all the time! Lots of books I read are good ones, but this series was truly up there with the absolute best!

These books have fantastic imagery, with dramatic world building, with completely differing landscapes where each race lives, but all are sharing different zones of the one great landmass.

There are some really cool characters in the series, characters who stick in the mind. They are all so very different and are from very different races. Living as they do, having to share the same landmass, makes for a tense dynamic between the five races. Secrets and petty differences are at the forefront of each race's mind. No two seem to agree and they have little, if any, common ground. Unspeakable things are done by one race against another, and terrible atrocities are committed during times of war. But be that as it may, they will have to put there differences aside as a far greater threat will consume them all of they don't find a bit of common ground. That is what starts all the trouble, the trouble being that no one wants to lose their power.

This series made for very satisfying reading, with brilliant action scenes and great dialogue.
I loved the characters in this series, they were totally awesome, and I look forward to reading more about what happens to a certain 2 year old. The interactivity between the different races was superb, with witty banter and some great lines that really stood out. The Creator was a very interesting character indeed. He certainly wasn't as one would expect him to be.

All in all this is one heck of a series. I can honestly say that I was genuinely loath to put my kindle down when it was time to eat or sleep. It was exciting and attention grabbing all the way through and the climax at the end was amazing and well worth waiting for.

Wow.....just wow!

What an amazing tale; dark, funny, sad, a brilliant plot and a rather excellent and unusual set of peoples. If you like this genre you will not be unhappy with Books 1-4 of the Magelands Epic, it would not surprise me at all if this is not regarded as a classic of the genre in the near future.

Another real treat...

The whole concept of this series of books is nothing more than pure magic. You must read these books or miss out on so much pleasure...

Written like a tv series

The books were intriguing. The characters well written enough to be able to love or hate them. The world building was pretty good and I appreciate the included maps, though they could have been a bit more detailed in line with the story. There were a few locations that weren’t clearly delineated on the maps and I was confused about where they were talking about. I know in the first book, Arakhanah and Akhanawarah confused me since the first one is labeled on the map like the entire region but turned out later to be a city but had no place marker, and the second one being a newly created city with an actual place marker on the map.

Then sometimes there were dead zones, where nothing was really happening and the characters were just talking about nothing meaningful and there was not actionable things happening that would relate to or lead to an actionable item. It was especially annoying when the previous chapter would leave off in an actionable scene and a sense of urgency or something was in play.

Agang’s reflections into his past about his father and his lover and his abilities were frequently brought up but glossed over. Maybe the details were in another book, but if you don’t know to read it first, this detail seems like a plot hole as what happened was never recapped fully in this set. You only receive bits and pieces, not enough to figure it out.

The worst was when the characters started becoming stupid, oblivious to things right in front of them. They would have exhibited common sense and intelligence the entire time you’ve read about them and then suddenly they become stuck on stupid. Shella the first I was appalled by in this, especially concerning Obli. She sat around allowing herself to be used like it was okay, even after he brother spelled it out in direct terms to her what was happening. And she was extremely self centered and self-absorbed, seeming only to pretend to care about others while fulfilling her own desires. I don’t recall her sacrificing anything to help someone else.

Next was Keira. I’m not even going to get into it…smh. But anyway, this book was filled with so many self serving people who only pretended to care about others. So many evil and inhumane people. Even Laodoc. There were only a handful of people I’d say were true; Killop, Bridget, and Dean… maybe Dyam as well. Those people I don’t recall ever being nasty about a specific race of people (except for when Killop and Bridget were captives, but they soon narrowed it down to persons and not an entire race), didn’t wrongly blame all for the mistakes and cruelty of some, etc.

This book set was a good read and it ended in such a way that could close out the story without needing to continue for closure. It’s a sad but happy ending. I enjoyed it and it didn’t leave any bitter or unresolved major issues.

See my notes highlights and commentary on Goodreads. Happy reading!

Amazing

I liked the fact that these characters are based on us. Even though they are different types of being, they were all discriminated against at some point. Most of these races owned slaves, most thought they were more superior than others, wars were started over rumors and misinformation. The best part for me was when the 5 most powerful mages of the world banded together to defeat the world's greatest evil. The emperor was slaughtering countless people to gain enough power to leave this world. One of the most powerful mages sacrificed her life to kill the emperor and save the world from his evil plan. I thought this was the complete series, however there's more. I'm looking for to continuing their stories. So much death of really good people, yet the evil people live on. I hope in the next book they get to fix the world for the better.

i enjoyed this story and the character diversity (race, sex, religion, lgbt) but felt it was dragged out at points. it was full of action and twists and turns. it would of nice to have had a more in-depth epilogue as the next series jumps years into the future. would recommend as a good read if your prepared to get into it as there are many characters. it was nice to see character development from the prejudice against the other races to them become close companions and in some cases romantic.

could this be allegorical for modern day society? we all know each other exist? but many people still refuse to respect the other races as equals. very interesting thoughts

Very good read

This series is a reason that I like series over individual books. They can accomplish things that an individual book could never accomplish no matter how well it was written. This series ends in a place that you could never conceive. Not that it is contrived in any way. The characters are excellent, believable and have their different beliefs and motivations. The locations are well described, the mechanics of how the world works etc are well fleshed out. The only draw back would be the rampant swearing in the book so you may not want younger ones reading it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will read the second half immediately.

Once you get into it, there's no stopping.

You could tell that it was an epic, as there are maps at the start!
Took a while to get into, 5 different lands, each with it's own unique race living there, and lots of names to try and place in different cultures. But if you stick with it, you will get pulled in completely.
Great character building, fabulous scenery descriptions and a plot that will keep you reading until well into the night. I'm was just starting to re-establish my sleep routine, but that has now gone south while I start the next box set.

Great story with some unexpected plot twists.

I love the idea of this perilous quest with different peoples having to join together. I did feel the final books enemy the creator was not done extremely.well. of its him, dead, dead, dead... But yet somehow by sheer determination they can slay him. I expected a concerted effort not him dying due to his extreme arrogance. Overall a great read. I couldn't put it down!

It would be 4 star, if the writer hadn't inserted a juvenile embarrassing cliche of a romance
That whole one look "I need skin to skin contact" drivel. When in a rather dangerous situation, 2 people decide to jump into sex, and the other issue is, you could cut 4 books down to 2 if you removed the drinking and swearing. I don't mind drinking or swearing unless ot feels like the writer is trying to compensate for an actual lack of story, and it needs filling. It's lazy and the 4 stars plummeted down to 2
It's too bad. It had some real potential

Fantastic read

This series is fantastic. A great read, compelling and complex characters who drawn you in and entrance you into loving them. You definitely want to read this series, you will not regret. I will absolutely be purchasing the next book in this series. Well done Christopher Mitchell you stand out.

I do not think swearing is necessary and it certainly detracts from the book. At the beginning there was so much jumping around that I did not develop an affinity with any of the characters and didn’t connect with the storyline at all. I scanned a number of chapters to get the gist of what was going on. In the end I just got bored with the book as I no longer cared for any of the characters.

Magelands

Wow, this is an excellent series of novels. They're long and took me several days to read back to back but I loved every minute of it. It was hard to watch friends die and see the anguish they went through. However, it was all set right and couldn't have had a better ending. It's a fantastic world that's been created and I can't wait to read the next ones!

Before buying, I read some of the reviews and a few criticised the violence, but the story is about wars between different races, so what do you expect? Also the strong language was mentioned, but that doesn't worry me. So if you want a good story with strong characters, plenty of action, and don't mind swear words and violence, then this book is definitely worth reading.

An epic tale

I took these books on partly in chance and to see what the story was like, and found myself totally engrossed in the story. The characters are well written and some dialogue is very amusing and serious. Will move into to the next part quite happily as I was entertained thoroughly.

Wow!

An excellent series! The author has done a superb job of world building and character development. Can't wait to read the next books in the series. I highly recommend this book to those of you who are tired of reading the same old thing. Christopher Mitchell has created a unique setting and story line with exciting characters.

I lasted till page 174 or chapter 14 of 34 for book #1. Just found it boring and didn’t really care about any of the charter’s. Maybe I have a limited view on what I expect from my fantasy books or maybe it just takes forever for the story to get going.

Also note that it’s a UK book. So instead of “what happened?” It’ll be ‘what happened?.

I may try and finish it in the future.

This is a great saga, very bloodthirsty with some colourful language. The World made by the Creator is divided into different lands which begin to start warring with each other. There are Mages from the different peoples who have various powers, which they use in the battles against each other. However they all need each other to overcome the Creator.

epic is right

Wow. What a long book. It’s is ambitious and very well written. The character development is great, and I loved them - especially the irreverence of shella and keira. I did find that the perspective shifting between characters every chapter grated - it isn’t something I love, but the fact I could do -4000 pages of it speaks volumes - pun intended. 🤣.

The Creator

This is about survival. People lived, worked, fought to take care of family and friends to survive. Then this, so called creator, who may or may not created the world and it's people. He was so smart that he had to destroy it all, instead of fixing everything and making it better.

I really enjoyed these books. A very original plot and the reader becomes engaged with the characters as they are developed by the author. I felt fed up when I finished until I realised that there is a follow up series. Hurray!

Mostly well done and a decent read, although there were some typos here and there. But, it was more than a little blasphemous at times. As someone who loves Sci-fi & fantasy, sometimes I have to look past certain aspects of stories, but this was almost too much, even for me.

Loved every single page!

I spend my time trying to find fantasy books that I can escape into. And this is one of the best books to get lost in I've found in a long time. Loved all the characters, in different ways, and now only regret reading it so quickly!

Excellent fantasy for more mature readers

Great books, well written fantasy novels. I do however feel compelled to note the liberal use of coarse language and especially the F Bomb. So this one is best for teens on up.

I typically avoid stories where death and destruction play too large a role. However, the disparate characters and well-crafted story provided distraction as I plowed through all four volumes. Excellent, well-written story. I recommend.
