So, as part of the fact that I seem to request sequels to read and review, this review is based on the fact that I have not read book 1 of the series. I received this via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review – this does not implicate my views on the book.

My inability to read descriptions strikes again – Shadow Rise is book 2 in the Shadow Fall series by Audrey Grey, and honestly, despite the very beginning and a few minor parts, the book read really well without me having any context from the first book. In saying that, I would not recommend reading the series out of order – as I said, there were definitely sections where I thought it would have been better if I'd read the first book, to fully understand some of the terms used and the importance of the world building and the characters relationships with each other.

Despite this though, Shadow Rise still had plenty of world building. I don't want to assume anything but as the book is clearly a different setting to the first book, we see the world building surrounding the Rebels rather than the privileged world that Maia grew up in. From reading just the second book, I understood that her family was originally in a position of high regard – of course, I don't know all the details but that's my fault and I can say for certain that everything in this book is not a repetitive in-depth retelling of what happened in book 1 because when I read the first book properly, I will learn more about this intricate world Grey has written for us.

Okay, so characters – ignoring the fact that a lot of them were introduced in book 1 – were predominantly 3-dimensional. I often found some of them unnecessary in scenes, mostly because there were a lot of names and people to keep track of. I liked Maia's character a lot; she was head-strong and driven, though at times seemed to change her mind a bit suddenly? And Lash was great – he was the kind of character that cut through all the seriousness of rebellion and war. I wasn't too sure about Riser – he seemed like a good character when he couldn't remember who she was, but then lost all that kind of ruggedness away when he did and he turned into a bit of a sap (this, I think, is mainly my fault though – the character development for Riser would definitely have happened within the first book and bled into the book 2, but I only saw part of it). I like some of the named rebels, but honestly, right now I'm struggling to remember their names and who was who – there were quite a few to follow.

The entire book was pretty fast-paced, once you hit a certain point at the start, with a kind of anticipation after every chapter about what someone would do next to get the upper hand – this is the kind of dystopian sci-fi that I love, where society has reformed into this cunning and ruthless place where you have to think ten steps ahead in 5 different directions. It made plot twists really interesting to read within the narrative (and some would have been double my excitement about them if I'd read book 1 first).

I can't fault the writing either – I think it was a perfect depiction of the voice of our main character and works well.

4/5 stars

Book recommended to read (in series order is highly recommended).

I’ve read this book twice (this genre isn’t so much my taste anymore, but I wanted to finish the series that I’d started years ago and needed to refresh my memory) and have decided to rewrite my review to try and reflect my feelings for both reads.

- The first time I read this, I felt it was sort of choppy at first, and I was confused about exactly what was going on and how much time was passing. But, perhaps because I knew more about everything, I didn't have that issue the second time. I guess you just have to trust that everything will start to make more sense and flow more smoothly.

- Weirdly, my first read, I felt the book jumped straight into the action and plot, whereas my second read, I felt it was a bit slow. But still interesting enough to keep me reading.

- Maia's reconstruction threw me off in the first book, but this time she just seemed to be herself, so I found her easier to understand and connect with. And I liked her; she stayed focused on what was important, even when the decisions she had to make were tough ones.

- Riser was still interesting---not quite as feral, but kind of smooth and observant and predatory.

- Other characters were great too, including some new one. Lash was friendly, playful, flirty, and so likeable. Tegan was fun too. I really liked Maia's friendship with them both. I was glad for Maia to have Max back, even if the relationship still needs work. I felt for Caspian.

- There was some great chemistry and tension between Maia and Riser.

- I also liked the different sort of tension, more like a sad frayed tether, between Maia and Caspian.

- A warning for anyone who hasn't read the first book yet, things in this series are very extreme, especially when it comes to violence and dangerous situations. Sometimes things get pretty graphic.

- Both times reading this, I was frustrated at everyone thinking Maia was a traitor, but I was more frustrated at Maia for not explaining anything and for continually doing things that only reinforced everyone's belief.

So a bit of frustration, but overall, I did end up enjoying this book. I liked some of the characters, the touching moments among them, and the intensity of the story as it went on.

*I’ve read this book multiple times. This review was written after my 2nd read.*

Shadow Rise is a sequel with a burning intensity. This one shines bright with passion, betrayal, danger, and excitement! You do not want to miss this emotional story so far from Shadow Fall and Shadow Rise!

I had been waiting for this one since I read book 1 in May of this year! I was not disappointed at all! Shadow Rise was everything I expected, and so much more! This one definitely did not suffer from “second book syndrome.” It had action, danger, emotion, and passion! It had enjoyable bits of humor, horror, and science fiction. Grey has done a phenomenal job with bringing me back in to the world of Shadow Fall. I felt like I never left, and definitely had all the feels still! The writing and world building were outstanding, and the character development was exceptional, just like book 1.

Maia still stood out for me so much! I honestly felt like she compares to Celaena from Throne of Glass. She was fierce and determined, but vulnerable deep down. She was brave and compassionate, and fought for what was right.

I also really loved two of the new characters we were introduced to. Lash and Teagan were so entertaining to read! They were both unique and highly developed. Teagan was strong and brave, and Lash was alluring and humorous! I loved the roles they played in the story!

Shadow Rise picked up right where Shadow Fall left off and I did not feel like we skipped a beat (besides my heart from the suspense). Audrey Grey did an awesome job with throwing in bits and pieces from book 1 that refreshed my memory on important happenings from the story. The world building matched, and surpassed, Shadow Fall. The writing style was elegant and descriptive, and made me feel like I was right there in the world. The plot had several interesting, and unexpected, twists that fit the story, and kept me on the edge of my seat while I read this in one sitting! And, oh my heart! I had that “achy, burny, feely feel” (yep, making that a thing) in my chest the whole time! I need the next book now!

Thank you to the author for sending me this free e-ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Well, I'm glad I gave the series another shot even though this book is mostly filler, it brought us all the way back around to Maia's original task of destroying the asteroid.

In this book, Maia is alone losing both the prince and pit boy...but at the end of this story, both are back...hmmm, I think the next and final book is going to be interesting.

”They’re trying to break you. Don’t let them. If they knock you down five times, rise up six. Mourn the fall after you’ve rise and stomped them to ash.”

That 2nd book syndrome I’m always scared of popping up when starting a 2nd book in a trilogy? Not present here!!

This was such a thrilling read right from the start and leaves me craving more yet again when finishing it, as it did with book 1. The story did need some time to develop for a bit, but it was non-stop engaging nonetheless.

Can’t wait to dive into the third and conclusion book, hopefully very very soon. Maia, Riser and so many others have become characters I really fell in love with. I can definitely recommend picking up this series so that you hopefully fall in love with this story and these characters as well!

Thanks to Blaze Publishing for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review, This doesn't in any way influence my opinion of it.
description
I seem to be blessed with the chance of reading books by Audrey Grey. Shadow Rise is just splendid, It's the best sequel to the perfect Shadow Fall. It begins with Maia's torture in the hand of the Royalists, particularly the terrible, horrible, no good very bad Archduchess. It was gruesome and not fun at all but Maia being the awesome steadfast girl she is endures. Due to her ingenuity and the unwilling help of a certain Prince (Caspian not HIM), she manages to barely escape and land into the cold arms of the Rebels. Life for Maia away from captivity isn't a totally joyful one as she has been branded as a traitor due to the her not killing Caspian, Some machinations by the Archduchess, and a series of misunderstandings. Though all this hardship is enough to bring some people down, not Maia. Instead of despairing over her situation, she decides to focus on the good parts. Which is her brother Max (He's now a full fledged Rebel but harbors some hard feelings towards her), finding the location of the Mercurian and stopping Pandora, Brogue, and the most important of all Riser (Yes he's alive and well but apparently all his memories of Maia has been erased supposedly his decision). It was not easy at all for her, nope it was brutal and hectic. But part of the reason she was able to keep going was the friendship of two Rebels, Lash (Her babysitter/Sort of Guard) and Teagan (Ophelia's lover). They helped Maia get back up whenever Nicolai or Flame tried to break her, Even when Maia was ostracised by all the Rebels and rebuffed they had her back. While gloomy stuff happened, it wasn't all pouty and cranky. Maia and the 'new' Riser was fun to read about as they flirted and reconnected as the different people they are now. The dynamic between Maia and Caspian is as twisted as ever perhaps even more so due to some events that threatened the life of both of them. Maia eventually finds a way to get what she wants without explicitly betraying the Rebels but it entailed winning over Riser in simulated combat, buy he is also the fiercest and best warrior of the Revolution. With friends becoming foes, betrayal rampant, Royalists chanting for her demise, and Rebels believing her to be the worst of the worst, Maia was at a very low point. Lash, Teagan and Max were the reason she kept fighting but the fire burning through her veins that was her drive was saving everyone from Pandora, that was the end goal not some hopeless war that'd end with massacre and death and the victor still vanquished. The feelings between Riser and Maia was really intense and HOT though he was a total jackass sometimes. There is still a lot of SciFi treats in Shadow Rise that'll excite the science minded. There are so many twists and turns that kept this book engaging till the ending but none more than what happened at the very end. Those developments really has me excited for the next book. There is not enough words for me to describe just how interesting the contents of Shadow Rise is but I recommend it to anyone looking for a great book. The words flow with ease, that pages just going by swiftly. The characters are so intriguing you'll want more, the world so brilliantly crafted it brightens the imagination and the prose so lush. Audrey Grey definitely knows her stuff, She's one of the best authors the writing world has to offer (I don't say this lightly). Filled with nonstop action, kick-butt characters, sizzling romance, nasty villains and monumental writing, Shadow Rise is a Dystopian novel from the wickedly talented Audrey Grey you don't want to miss.

P.S:I just love that cover, can't wait to see the next one.

This book starts basically where the first ends, little has happened in between. The Archduchess has Maia locked in the tower and is repeatedly torturing her, then healing her to torture her all over again. They are starving her and no water. Maia has no idea how much time has passed, but guesses two days. And despite her emancipated state, barely being able to rollover or stand up, she is able to take out two guards and escape, although she is caught [deep breath ... sigh].

Shadow Rise seems like a typical middle book in a trilogy, where not much happens to contribute to the storyline. It's rather slow, boring, and repetitive -especially Maia. I probably could have read the synopsis and skipped reading the book, and went straight to book 3 without missing anything plot wise.

This book continues on much like the first book. There are still storyline holes, the execution is sometimes better, sometimes worse, than the first book. We are given new settings, but the descriptions are lacking still making it confusing to grasp what is being presented. New technology is given to us, but much like the "cloudcraft" in book one, I had to fill in the blanks myself for what a "swifter" actually is.

Some book nuances that still bug me:
Maybe the author thought we'd forget details from the 1st book, or maybe she forgot herself. But since I finished book 1 and started this book the following day, it was all fresh in my mind. In Shadow Fall, Maia says she was 9 and her brother Max was 6 years old when their father was killed and Maia is imprisoned. But in this book Maia thinks, while riding Swifters, that Max had the same smile when he was 8. They would have been separated, and she would have been in the pit for nearly two years when Max was 8.
Lash is one of my favorite characters introduced. But he makes a comment that he "loved above my station" and suffered the penalty "for a silver that falls in love with a Gold". But did the author forget, Maia is the daughter of a Gold & Bronze who fell in love, got married, and had kids.
Max has a girl he's always with, Rivet. Maia is watching Rivet and thinks "Gods, if only I had been that cool at her age". In this book, Maia is still 16, Max aged more and just turned 15, this girl Rivet is his age 14/15-ish. Remember, Maia has only been out of The Pit for 10+/- days (though it feels like much longer it's mentioned when she leaves the pit in book 1, there are 522 hours until Pandora hits, that's just under 22 days. This book mentions there are 10 or 12 days until Pandora hits), when she was Rivet's age, a year ago, she was just trying to survive the pit. As I said in the first book's review, it would have made more since for Maia to have been 14 when she was thrown in the pit, and been there for 2 years. None of this adds up, and I really hate how the author just changes things on a whim to fit a new narrative.

I am not going to recommend this book. If you are into the trilogy and want to see how it ends, read the synopsis, read a few spoiler alerts, skip this book and read book 3, Shadow Ruin.

Spoiler warning! Rant warning!

I had to go and look at reviews to see if I could continue with this series. I even debated reading the last chapter to see if that would give me the motivation to continue. But ultimately I am too angry to continue.

While most people probably like the direction that the author went I did not. It really angered me. After Maia escaped, she finds out that she is labeled a traitor by the rebels. Not only that but Riser supposedly erased her from his memory. Are you freaking kidding me? To me, that means everything she just suffered through was for nothing. Her friends abandon her and Riser completely erasers her and changed. A total personality flip.

Excuse me, but no. Everything I just finally connected within the first book is now thrown out the window. We had enemies to lovers only for them to turn back into enemies to lovers again. Are you kidding me!!! I have to relive them not being together and fighting attraction and all that new crap that’s in the way? Heck to the no! I ain’t doing it.

That is what has angered me. While other reviews liked the direction I did not. Not for me.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Synopsis: Terrorist. Rebel. Traitor. One rash decision during the Shadow Trials led to unspeakable horrors that left innocents dead, friends injured and hunted by the Empire, and Maia Graystone imprisoned in the Tower at the Archduchess’s mercy. Unsure if Riser Thornbrook survived, Maia must find a way to battle the Empire from within its own walls and escape so she can fulfill the promise to her father and stop the asteroid. But when she breaks free and joins Nicolai's Rebel army, she discovers she’s been branded a traitor. With war between the Rebels and the Empire looming, old alliances shifting, and suspicion hanging over her head, she must fight in the Rebel Blood Courts—and win command—to regain their trust. Only problem is, first she has defeat the reigning champion, someone she knows all too well. Will Maia’s emotions lead to her defeat, or will she rise up and claim her victory?

While the first book wasn’t my favorite beginning books for series, I did go ahead and read the sequel over the weekend while I could. And again, it was a decent read for me. I felt that the ending was decent and that the character development and world building was much better. The book was also much more action packed for my tastes.

However, the first part of the book is really really slow and boring for me. It took a lot for me to make it through that section. I’m still really confused on some of the aspects of the book and I also found that a lot of the book is forgettable.

Verdict: If you liked the first book, you’ll like this one. Just get through the first half of the book.

I admit that I was ambivalent about reading this book because I just couldn't get into the first book. But, I was curious enough to give this second book a try & I'm glad that I did!

I was often confused by the first book & the beginning of this one was a little confusing as well. It was hard to keep track of all the double/tripe/quadruple crosses going on throughout the story! I am sure that was the author's intent, but fair warning: you really have to pay attention to what is going on in order to enjoy the book!

This book has loads of action/adventure, cyberpunk-type technology & some romance. The characters that I couldn't bring myself to like, much less love, in the first book, redeemed themselves in Shadow Rise. You will definitely be cheering for the good guys (once you figure out who they are) & hissing at the bad!

I look forward to the next book in the series, because we know there will be one, right?

Shadow Rise was non-stop action--couldn't put it down! I really enjoyed getting back into Audrey Grey's world. She did a great job with building the characters, allowing the reader to learn more about them, and to care more about their lives and the reasons behind the things they did.

Pandora is getting closer to destroying earth . . . I can't wait for the next book to find out if their plans succeed!

*I RECEIVED A COPY OF THIS BOOK FROM NETGALLEY IN EXCHANGE FOR MY HONEST REVIEW*

Ok, so first of all I have to say a HUGE thanks to the publishers for letting me read and review this book. I was beyond excited when I saw my request was approved.

I loved Shadow Fall so much, and I am so happy to say that I loved Shadow Rise just as much.

Wow.... The character development and secondary characters were spot on. The story was fast paced and full of action, and there was lots of witty banter and snide comments that I love so much. The love triangle is still in full force - but I have to say that this is one love triangle that I fully support. I honestly can't choose between Riser and Caspian. They are both so perfect for Maia in their own way. I'll be heartbroken no matter who she ends up choosing.

We got a little more back story, which answered some lingering questions I had from Shadow Fall (sorry, no spoilers here!)

There was a pretty cool twist at the end that I didn't see coming - so now, of course, I am left desperately waiting for the next book! Please Audrey Grey - don't leave me hanging too long!

When I finished the first book, I wasn't sure if I would want to read this one. Even so I gave it a shot and, fortunately, this was definitely better than the first. I still really dislike Maia though. She always does such stupid things and makes the dumbest decisions.

We pick up pretty much right where we ended. Maia is being tortured by the archduchess, and how she suffers for her lack of speaking. Between the horrendous torture and subsequent healing after each session, she has no idea how much time has actually passed. She's weak, but determined to escape. Which is where my first issue with this book came. She's so weak that she can barely stand, yet she manages to take out, not one, but two armed guards that come for her? Not buying it. Though that escape failed, she soon enough manages to succeed. Only this time to be taken by the rebels.

While not treated as a captive by them, she is overwhelmingly treated as a traitor. She doesn't want to be one of the rebels though, so she doesn't fight for acceptance. Instead she fights for Riser's throne. After barely being rescued and making it out alive, Riser was thrust onto the scorpion throne and every memory of Maia was stripped away from him. But her every action toward him, and just her being there causes him to want more of her. Maia is angry at this betrayal of him not remembering her, so she tries to not care about him either. Though that proves impossible. She has finally learned that she cannot do everything herself so she tries to come up with different plans, none of which go her way. When the last one goes wrong and way off course, what she needs to focus on now is this battle that they have where the last person standing takes the crown for the day and, therefore, whose orders would have to be obeyed. Not easy considering Riser is undefeated. But Maia cannot get back into the city by herself to get to what her father hid without his army and nobody in charge is willing to listen to her.

There are obvious traitors to deal with, and someone important comes back into Maia's life. Which caused her to act in another way that really annoyed me . Even with Riser not remembering her, I still really enjoyed all of their interactions. But the person that I loved the most was a new guy. Forced to be Maia's guard and pretty much watch her 24/7 was Lash. He was just so much fun and a great guy. Hands down, my absolute favorite character this book.

The ending was pretty good, and I just loved what Riser does first thing after he gets his memory back. The twist at the end was something that surprised me and I never ever would have expected. While I am not going out of my mind excited about the next book, I'll probably be more interested in checking it out than I had originally been in this one.

Shadow Rise by Audrey Grey is book two in her Shadow Fall series. Shadow Rise picks right up where Shadow Fall leaves off. Maia has been captured by the Emperor and the Archduchess and is being held prisoner. She’s been labeled a traitor by both the Emperor and those that she fought side by side with before her capture. Prince Caspian holds her responsible for the death of his beloved sister, Ophelia, and his heart and mind are clouded by his anger. The Emperor and Archduchess are intent on two things: finding the Mercurian to destroy it and finding the rest of the rebels and destroying them so that the resistance will die down. Maia must find a way to escape the Archduchess and find a way to the Sim that Caspian showed her so that she can once again attempt to access the information that her father has hidden away. Finding the device to stop Pandora and save the people is paramount but it won’t be an easy task. At times the task will seem insurmountable but with help from those who never stopped believing in her and a few new friends it just might be accomplishable.
Shadow Rise, so much like Shadow Fall, is a dynamic power-punch combination of Hunger Games meets The Maze Runner series. This book hits the ground running and barely lets up the whole way through. Once again the author thrusts Maia into the hands of the Archduchess and Maia must find a way to escape. When an opportunity presents itself, she is successful but at the same time she is once again a prisoner but to a different group. She’s been branded a traitor but there’s more to it. The trials that she must face just keep coming. Danger constantly surrounds her. Now her friends are few and far between and her emotions are running high. If she doesn’t get them under control she could end up ruining and losing everything. With each step that she takes Maia will either come closer to success or defeat.
I enjoyed Shadow Fall but I enjoyed Shadow Rise even more. The story is fast paced and kept me engaged the entire way through. Maia is growing stronger as a character and I really like that. Before in Shadow Fall, she was still weak and the girl who was thrown into the pit. She always wanted to run and hide and wait for things to go away. Now she is becoming stronger and she’s becoming braver because she’s seen and dealt with so much. The author throws new unforeseen challenges at her and instead of running away Maia starts to take a stand and fight.
Be forewarned this book does end in another cliffhanger like the first book but it just makes me more eager for the next book in the series. This book also ramps up the romance a bit too. While in Shadow Fall we only got tastes of romance here and there, this book brings it in more and makes it more of the story. Each little taste will leave you craving more. The introduction of new characters adds to this story as each brings something unique and engaging.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. This is a series that I highly recommend. It’s intense, lots of drama, betrayal, romance and so much character growth. The author gives us backstory when it is needed and you’re kept interested throughout. This is one of those books that are hard to put down and a must read.

Author: Audrey Grey

Publisher: Blaze Publishing

Publishing Date: November 14, 2017

ISBN: 9781945519055

I received this book from Blaze Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Though I received this novel from Blaze Publishing, I would have happily bought it on my own. I received the first installment in this series in late 2016 and fell madly in love with it. It's been horrific waiting for the second book, as I'm a highly impatient reader, but I am so thankful that Audrey produced a novel that surpasses the first installment!

Summary:
Maia Graystone is faced with the horrific consequences of her impetuous decision following the unexpected end of the Shadow Trials in book one, Shadow Fall.

Left with the burning uncertainty of her allies survival, Maia must find a way to escape the Empire's clutches once again so that she can honor her promise to her father to end the asteroid hurtling towards the planet. As the journey unfolds, Maia is branded a traitor amongst the Rebels, and in a war between them and the Empire, she finds she is on a team of one. As alliances shift, and rumors wreak havoc, Maia must compose herself to enter the Rebel Blood Courts and fight to win command. Unfortunately, though, the reigning champion is an all too familiar friend, whom she would have to cut down in order to be crowned. Will Maia be able to overcome the confusing emotions she feels towards friends, allies, and enemies, or will she fall to defeat from her heartstrings that are too easily pulled?

Pros and Cons:
This novel is so beautifully written and is a huge step forward from book one. It is relatable, fierce, humorous, and even sensual. Audrey writes such a convicting story that it is immensely difficult to see any flaw - and those that you might see are almost easily overlooked.

This novel features so many wonderful components to its plot. With a strong female lead, diverse characters (LGBTQ+), and gripping dialogue, it is a powerhouse novel. One of the things I really loved in the book was that her character Lash, throws "love," and "darling" around like its the individual's name. It's a small addition to character development that reminded me of how my southern family and I speak! I also loved the fact that Maia regularly makes impulsive decisions - as someone who has battled anger issues, I understand what it's like to feel out of control. These little pieces create a lasting story for their readers and I so appreciate the work Audrey put into them.

As far as "cons" go, as I stated earlier, Audrey writes SUCH a great novel it's really easy to overlook some small confusions. One thing that irked me through most of this story was that the plot between book 1 and book 3 all takes place in a little less than a month's time. Though all things are explained away in the plot with plenty of information, with an ever-evolving and morphing protagonist it is really hard to gauge whether or not this is a pro or a con, a strength or a flaw.

In some situations, I can completely understand the changes that take place. Maia is 16 in the first novel but she easily feels 18-20 in the second. Sure, she still makes so emotionally lead decisions that cause issues (as any teenager would,) but she's still matured and hardened drastically. I understand the idea of war, and that suffering, and torture can radically affect a person and their maturity levels, but in some instances, it all felt so rushed. Then again, if I had only a few weeks to live I'm sure I'd rush things, too.

So you see, I can't tell whether or not that's a pro or a con. As I said, it's all easily explained away, and yet it still ate at me for all 300 pages. Once you read this 5-star series, you can determine it for yourself!

Characters:
Maia Graystone is our protagonist, a strong female lead with highly convicting morals. In the first installment she starts off quite weak, and through her journey in book one she ends up stronger than she would have ever been capable of without the help of the Rebellion. In this novel, we get a closer look at Maia as she has hardened and shifted into whatever was needed to survive. Still easily emotionally motivated she is a very moving character. I found my heart panging for her throughout the novel as I understood her fear, pain, and anger. Equally, though, I felt her joy. When she laughed or smirked I found myself feeling it radiating from the pages. She's a well-written character that I found such a pleasure to read. As she matures in this next installment we watch her toy with her sexuality, push the limits of her strength, and gain a deeper understanding of friendship and allies.

Riser Thornbrook is difficult to discuss without spoilers, so I'll be vague. In the first novel, he is feral, and wild which creates the image of a dog. A vicious protector, but a loyal friend. In book two Riser's imagery shifts to that of a machine, mechanical and calculated. This novel lets us learn a different side to Riser, while still also seeing that no matter how much someone changes, hints of who they are will never fade away.

One of my favorite characters in this novel was Taegan. Taegan is a queen in her own right. She's aware of her own strength, and never questioning of it. She's regal and beautiful and provides wonderful banter and support for Maia. As a "subversive" (the term used for anyone who isn't heterosexual) she was considered less-than-human, having no place in society but when she joined the Rebellion, she took society by storm and made something of herself. I always love a good comeback!

Lash was another favorite of mine! He was a disabled healer with a heart of gold and an undying belief in the gods most thought to be dead. I love his spunk and his fight. He has such a desire to prove himself and that his disabilities don't define him. Though he may not be able to help in the most "traditional" ways, doesn't exclude him from still being an asset. His need to flirt with everything that moved and his unwavering pride was a pleasure to encounter. I always found myself smiling when he was around, and as someone with disabilities herself, I found him inspiring!

Conclusion:
Unlike book one, this novel is not a coming-of-age. This novel is the making of a queen, learning not only how to fight for the rest of the world, but also how to fight for one's self. This novel embraces the "love is love" philosophy with diverse characters, including two distinct situations in which characters suffer for their hearts desires. I rated it PG-15 as it takes a more mature step into the plot with more death, some sexual tension, innuendos (no more than a freshman in high school would make), the brevity of a harsh war and the torture included.

I am so thankful to Blaze for sending me this novel, and to Audrey for writing it. I am dying for book 3 and am so very eager to hear your thoughts as you tag along on this journey with Maia, and all the others!

Received an ARC copy for an honest review via NetGalley.

I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book, as I didn't exactly love the first one. It had a few great moments, but overall I wasn't thrilled. This feeling continued throughout the first 45% of the second book. I don't like to leave a book unfinished, though, so I pushed through. After that first 45% I started to feel myself growing more interested in the plot and in the characters.

Maia is a character that I like about 50% of the time and am annoyed by the other 50% of the time. Did I still find myself rooting for her and her cause? Sure, I did. I just felt like her thoughts and actions were very repetitive and it started to come off as whiny, even for a teenager. However, I really like the Maia from the last 15% of the book and I actually find myself wanting to see where her journey takes her in book 3.

Riser is my favorite character. He's deep and you care about him. Even in this book, with how complicated his story has become, you want to see him survive this world. And by the end, I found my heart thumping in my chest thinking about what the future might hold for him.

Lash and Teagan (who was briefly in the first book) were amazing additions to the story. Lash is funny, caring, and there's more to him than he lets on. Teagan is brave, tough, and unabashedly herself. This book was made more bearable for me, even in the first 45%, because of these two characters.

The storyline was slow at first, but there's a twist at the end that really made it all worthwhile. It was the difference between rating this 3 stars and 4. I'll be back for the third book, but I hope it's not as slow as this one and the first one were.

The first half of this book is unrelentingly dark, with the protagonist making stupid choices, like, not just telling Pit Boy who he was to her? Not telling any of the rebels her father created something to destroy Pandora and save humanity? She allows that to remain a secret except to her and the psychopath running the rebels.
She mires in self pity, blaming herself for every single thing that has ever gone wrong, and I hate that self centred drivel so much. And then her brilliant plan to defeat her boyfriend in mock combat to take over the rebels for a day? Stupid. Why would they allow that when they think she's a traitor?
And she just allows her brother to treat her like trash, instead of screaming in his face, "do you have any idea what I have gone through for you? What I've fcking endured since I was arrested for trying to steal you bread?!" And then punching him in his rude ass face.
Anyway, glad I came on here to read the reviews, cus imma skip to the last few chapters and get the heck out of this mess.
Don't get me wrong, dark in a book is great. But when EVERYTHING is dreadful and awful for hundreds upon hundreds of pages with nothing to redeem that, it makes a book impossible to enjoy. All she had to do to redeem this was give the protagonist a single spark of hope. Have Pit Boy call her Digger Girl without thinking, and begin to question why he did that. A single chapter of the book from his perspective while he watches this strange girl and his brain screams at him. Max coming to her in the dark of night to ask her story. Anything.
Maybe it comes later, but it's come to late for me. I'll be skipping all the chaff.

Rebel with a cause

Maia is a survivor and fights to save her family. She will never give up or give in. I admire her fortitude and trying to make upfor her mistakes. She is trying to do the right thing and not get caught up in revenge and retribution. Her loyalty to to Se she cares about makes her the perfect leader as she does not want powerbut wants to save the world. Riser and Caspian are the two men she cares about and one is her past and the other her future if they survive. Maia struggles with letting go and Caspian is part ofwho she could have been and she still has feelings for him but they are so different now on opposite sides of the war. I hope she succeeds and finds the device in time but the odds are stacked against her and will her friends survive the battle. Maia is a woman on a mission and proves that one person can make a difference

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Find this review and more on my blog The Rest Is Still Unwritten!

Shadow Rise is the sequel to Audrey Grey’s debut novel Shadow Fall and is a superb follow up to its predecessor that is filled with action, danger and thrilling moments of excitement and romance.

Maia Greystone made one rash decision that left her a prisoner of the Empire and dozens of innocent people dead. At the mercy of a cruel overlord, Maia’s only hope is escaping her prison and joining the Rebel forces determined to overthrow the Emperor. Yet when she eventually reaches the Rebels, Maia finds herself labelled a traitor. The two people she cares for more than anything in the world either do not remember her or want nothing to do with her and those around her ostracize her for her believed loyalty to the Empire. The Rebels plan to wage war against the Emperor, but with Maia sure there is another way, will she have the courage to fight for the Blood Throne to take control of the Rebels? Or will Nicolai and his army bring the world to its knees in its thirst for revenge?

Having adored the first book so very much, I was once again entranced with Shadow Rise. I very much enjoy this perilous dystopian world author Audrey Grey has created and can’t help but get lost in it. After loving the first book so, I was stoked to jump back in and have appreciated seeing new elements introduced and explored in this sequel, including the Fienian Rebels.

From the very beginning, I have found myself adoring the strong willed and tenacious heroine featured in this series and the complex world she inhabits that is full of danger; both in the form of the political and monarchical uprising that is going on and the looming threat of the asteroid that is on a collision course with Earth and is getting closer every day. Audrey Grey seems to have taken all my favourite elements of dystopian/apocalyptic novels and woven them together to give us Shadow Fall—and by golly is it brilliant! Personally, I just love it.

There’s so many fantastic characters in this series, including a lot of new ones in the form of Rebel members we meet in Shadow Rise. Maia finds herself some true friends in Teagan and Lash who often made me smile throughout the story and who were honestly likable and fun. Riser continues to be my guy (I’ll always be Team Riser) and Maia is still the incredibly strong willed and likable character we met in the first book.

There’s plenty of action, sizzling chemistry and danger fuelled moments within Shadow Rise. Alliances form and war is imminent with Audrey Grey ending Shadow Rise is excellent fashion. Highly entertaining and so addictive, I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book as soon as it’s released!

Tough, Emotional, Splendid

After reading the first book, I knew I wanted to get the second... and I avoided it like the plague. I was 100% right! Dang this book wrecked me. It’s so good, but so... harsh. On the one hand, I didn’t want to put it down, and on the other I had to keep walking away because I felt like my soul was being crushed.

Maia loses everything. The opening (minor spoiler, because if you read the first book you knew it was coming) with her being tortured by the Archduchess pretty much sets the theme for the book. She goes through hell, again.

Then she has to try to develop relationships, which is hard for her, understandably. But through it all she overcomes her fear, her failures, and her desire to give up. She keeps going when she is sure she has nothing left. She’s pretty freaking awesome. My only complaint with her: Woman, communicate!!! Good grief, stop wasting time and say what you feel and what you mean!

I’m super nervous for the next book, (which, as I understand it, is currently being written). I’m scared to see who makes it, and who doesn’t. I want all of them to make it, but I don’t think that’s realistic. I’ll probably avoid it like I did this one lol And then I’ll give in and read it and it will be amazing.

This was epically good. If you enjoyed Hunger Games, and other dystopian suspense/intrigue series... this is better. Hands down. And I love all those books! But Audrey Grey is the reigning Queen in my opinion. She did all those same kinds of things, but better.

So, woman up and read it. It’s worth the pain!

*voluntarily and honestly reviewed the ARC I received from NetGalley*

4.5 wowed stars for me. The first one was pretty cool with the secrets and deceit to get revenge on an empire that was killing people, but this one went past the uppity Trials and down into the dirt with the rebels, where everything is very real, and very dangerous. It's a place where Maia has an equal chance of dying, just like in the emperor's hands during her tortuous time under the Archduchess. I enjoyed the story immensely, loving her interacting with the rebels that helped shoot her into this frightening path. A lot of the bad things that happened played on my emotions, and I felt down when she did. I adored the people who befriended her, especially the slightly lecherous Lash. He was just- amazing lol.

The plot is slowed down a little, giving Maia more time to gather a plan for herself before faving off against the empire who's taken a lot of things from everyone. Seeing old and mentioned faces was cool, I loved the action when that's not normally a big thing with me. Loved the mental plays. A few times, I pondered over Maia's constant back and forth with some things, but otherwise, I thought this was a great read. It's got that exciting adventure you want to go on but can't because it's too dangerous. It's written with a style that sucks you in, and will have you smiling at Maia's accomplishments after falling so many times. After the way this left things, I can't wait for the third book.

Oh my gosh! This one was even better than the first book! Had my heart racing and my fists clenched. Ripped my heart out and stomped on it, then dusted it off and gave it back.

In this second installment, Maia is imprisoned in the tower of the empire and labeled a traitor. The twisted Archduchess is torturing her for information about the key. "Fight until your very last breath, Digger Girl" is her mantra. Thoughts of Max and Riser are the only things that keep her from breaking. She manages to kidnap Prince Caspian and escape the castle, only to be kidnapped by Fienian rebels on the outside.

They believe she's a traitor. They believe she betrayed Riser and Nicolai. They believe she killed the princess. She tries to get close to Riser but finds out that he's had her memory erased. He doesn't remember her at all. Max believes she's a traitor and wants nothing to do with her. Her entire reason for existing has just slipped through her fingers.

With her heart breaking, she must find a way to prove to these people that she is not a traitor while also earning their trust. She must gain Max's trust or none of this is even worth it. Will she convince the rebels to help her? Will Riser remember her? Will she get her not so little brother back? Will she be able to stop Pandora and save the planet?

Gahhhhhh Audrey.... why do you torture me so beautifully? And why do I enjoy it so much?

God... where do i start? First of all.. let me say this series is so GOOD. I can't get enough of it. Author Audrey Grey is killing me!!! I'm so hopelessly in love with her story. Her characters are awesome. I love Maia she's super kick ass and strong. Despite everything that she went through she doesn't give up and comes out even stronger. I couldn't stop reading once i started. It's that good! I won't post any spoilers because i always believe one should find out for themselves. It's so much better that way! So much has happened. It's crazy! I feel sad for Prince Caspian but I am team Riser all the way! My heart strings was pulled so many times. I was anxious, stressed out, happy, pissed off, sad, shocked, afraid, jealous... and every other emotions i'm pretty sure i felt it while reading this story haha. It was as if I was in Maia's "shoes". i got teary eyed at the part of the story about Brogue... why oh why... secrets are revealed and things aren't what they seem. So sad and touching. As for the ending... good lord my heart almost gave out haha. I'm sooo happy. I totally have a crush on Riser haha. No lie. Can't wait to see what happens next in Maia's story. Super action packed and never a boring moment. I love the new characters such as Lash... he's soo adorable... and as for family... I'm happy how Maia's life is turning for the better.

OK.

SO...

I knew this book would be rough just from the summary and where the first book ended. I couldn't begin reading it right away because I literally had to prepare myself mentally for this next step. I had SO MUCH ANXIETY going into this book it was insane. So I decided "sleep be damned, I'm finishing this book in 1 day", which for me is difficult because I'm such a slow reader (I like to absorb as I go). I NEEDED to finish this book in one day because for me it was like ripping off a bandaid. I trusted Audrey Grey in that she would ultimately do right by Maia but I knew there was going to be some MAJOR pain along the way.

Your heart will get wracked over the coals in this book. It physically hurt sometimes to read it. If you have ever been misjudged or made fun of or called a liar when you weren't this will hit you right in the feels. The unfair judgement and actions toward Maia in this book were almost too much to bare at times, but I kept the faith that I just needed to get through it, that there was light at the other end.

It took me about 10 hours to finish this book (with an 8 hour work day...I read a little at work...), but at 11:30pm I found the light I had been waiting for and my faith had not been in vain. I start the 3rd book tonight and knowing that I was able to make it through the second book, I know I can follow Maia to the end.

This series is next level intense. It's Hunger Games meets Red Queen series, but set in space. What's not to love about that?! I love how vividly detailed the world is, along with each of the characters. I also love that I have no flipping clue what is going to happen next. It's not predictable, and it keeps me on my toes. I legit had to close this book at one point and pace around my house because of my anxiety. Don't confuse that with negative connotations, because that's a GOOD THING. I deeply enjoy being so connected to a story that it affects my life outside of the 8 hours I invest in the book.
We're thrown right back into the story where we left off in book 1, and the action starts immediately. I think Everly/Maia really grows into who she wants to be and knows exactly where she is headed. She is fiercely determined, and will not be swayed no matter the cost. I love that determination. I also love that we have some villains that are so vile and awful you can't help but love to hate them. Truly despise with all of your heart. If you like gritty, dark, and vibrant stories that are unabashedly fearless then this series IS FOR YOU! I'm dying for book 3. Like, a dog in heat.. that's how bad I want to know the ending.

Argh! I loved this book. It has everything: intrigue, danger, betrayal, friendship, family, loyalty, love..... I could go on.

I fell in love with Shadow Fall and quickly moved on to reading Shadow Rise which is the second in the series. I was a little apprehensive about reading it as I didn’t want this to be a disappointing sequel but I can honestly say that was not the case.

Every emotion from book 1 was present but heightened.

The characters are amazing and have such depth. I particularly liked Maia’s development and the fact that she chose her true self. Of course I loved Riser! What’s not to love??
The supporting cast in this book are fantastic, in particular Lash and Teagan who added humour to the story.

Considering that the majority of this book was set in the one location, the descriptions and world building were brilliant and added to the vivid world depicted in Shadow Fall.

I cannot rate this book highly enough and I’m desperately hoping for a book 3 🙏🏻

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.

It hurts me so much to give "Shadow Rise" such a low rating because I completely loved the first book, "Shadow Fall". It was so different, beautiful, disturbing and dark but Shadow Rise was just such a let down. There is still darkness and the writing is still amazing (honestly, Audrey Grey could write about taking out the trash and it would be fascinating) but absolutely nothing happens in this book! There is hardly any advancement to the plot!

It could have been written in a couple pages and I would have been caught up for the next book.

I won't give up on this series. I have to find out what happens but I really hope the last one is as good as the first because otherwise I'll be heartbroken.

Audrey Grey’s second installment in her “Shadow Fall” series does not disappoint.
“Shadow Rise” is a wonderful follow up to the first book in the series. There is still more worldbuilding and it makes you fall in love with the “Shadow Fall” world all over again. You get to experience a different type of world than what we got to see in book 1, seeing the world through the rebel domains rather than that of the one full of prestige one in the first book.
Unlike book 1, “Shadow Rise’ was not slow to capture your attention. You hit the ground running and it’s a wild ride that you find yourself on. The characters are just as fleshed out and quirky as we remember and love. Maia and Riser are fabulous as always and I cannot get enough of them.
The new characters introduced in the sequel are bound to capture your attention as well and you will find yourself wanting to know them more.

A copy of the book was provided by the publisher in return for an honest review.
