Not tonight, Olivia.

Olivia’s ex-husband shut her down so many times before the cheating bastard left her that Olivia lost count. She didn’t realize she’d also lost the ability to banter, interpret body language, or accept that a man could find her desirable. None of that should matter when she leaves for a two-week training for her new job with the Ranchers, an outdoorsy nonprofit, but when her co-worker adds ‘halter top’ and ‘bikini’ to the official pack list, she has no idea what to expect on this trip.

It certainly wasn’t a perky blonde roommate who thinks their training is like spring break, but with a paycheck. It wasn’t the after-hours hot tub. It absolutely wasn’t the man with a rumble for a laugh who shows up on her flight and introduces himself as the colleague she didn’t know would be her companion for the next two weeks.

When blondie calls dibs on that same colleague, Olivia just wants to stay out of her way, but her colleague has ideas of his own. Ideas which involve Olivia, the hot tub, and shared sips of bourbon.

This was such a cute contemporary romance! Olivia has just gotten out of a bad marriage. She works for a company that is sort of like the girl scouts/boy scouts, called “Ranchers” and must take part in a two-week company retreat and training. The writing was absolutely hilarious. If you’ve ever had to participate in a forced company training or in-service week, you’ll completely love the drudgery and forced togetherness, but with a cute budding romance. I was cackling at the opening scenes where Olivia tried to get rid of a shrimp tail at a fundraiser. When she gets to the retreat, she is saddled with a terrible roommate who calls “dibs” on the hot guy Olivia was seated next to on the plane, Adam Burkhardt, and declares she wants to sleep with him. Then a bunch of junior high school shenanigans follow (those would be the words of Dolores, fellow conference attendee and former junior high principal, who was a favorite character!) where Lorrie tries to get Adam to pay attention to her and Olivia tries to escape the spotlight. Adam was just a big cinnamon roll and I really liked his character. I even liked Lorrie with Adam’s roommate for the conference, Eddie, as a couple by the end, which I never saw coming! Super cute.

I didn't know what to expect. Romance isn't my go to genre but I certainly won't go out of my way to avoid it and this book is one of the few romance books I actually enjoyed. It was playful with a bit of humor and of course had the lovely relationship blossom not to mention a few steamy scenes (but not too steamy! nothing rated R lol).  I have to say I was a bit confused at the beginning with so many names thrown at the reader and it being in 3rd person but that can easily be blamed on myself and not paying closer attention. As I read further, it was absolutely amazing. I found myself smiling and sometimes even blushing at the text. I also really liked the fact that Adam (the love interest) didn't push Olivia (the MC) into anything she didn't want or rush her to anything either. With that it left me wondering when I'd find myself a partner with Adam's personality (LOL). Book 1 certainly got me hooked!

Olivia is still reeling from an unhappy marriage/divorce when she is sent to a training camp by her employer. She has immediate chemistry with Adam, a recent hire at her company. However, before she can contemplate what, if anything, might happen between them, her perky, young, beautiful, and blonde roommate calls "dibs" on the man. For Olivia, who was left feeling worthless by her terrible ex, this is excuse enough to make half-hearted attempts to avoid Adam, despite the pesky way his voice, good looks, and admirable figure commands her attention. I found this book to be a delightful read! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and recommend it to all lovers of contemporary romance!

I read this while on vacation and I have to say, I looked forward to reading it in the evenings! This is a slow-burn that had me turning page after page, eager to see how Adam and Olivia were doing while on their business trip with the Rangers. I felt like I was actually there (maybe because I was on vacation at the time and even read the plane scene while I was on the plane!)

The amount of detail in this story was phenomenal and like I said, I felt like I was there and forgot I was even reading. I also have to say, this book is incredibly edited.

If you're looking for an exciting, well-written read with loveable characters, engaging plot, and super satisfying relationship, then Dibs is the book for you!! I can't wait to read book 2!!!

I had drifted away from contemporary romance for a long time, having been severely burnt out on it, but this one gave me incredible hope of coming back to it. It is a slow-burn romance that leaves a lot of the tropes you typically see at the door, surprising me at many a turn. The MC? A well-rounded woman who has been hurt and has low self-esteem, but still knows who she is and what she wants. The competition? She could have easily been made into a one-dimensional mean girl but is actually a rather friendly girl who just happens to enjoy a very extroverted lifestyle. The love interest? He had plenty of depth, was very pleasant, and the chemistry when he and the MC are together just pops right off the pages. It was also nice to see how lines were drawn and boundaries were respected. If you want a romance that goes down warm and smooth like a sip of bourbon, definitely give this a read.

Hurt/comfort perfection!
Dibs has been called and it’s a great excuse for Olivia to stay in her shell… Instantly relatable for anyone who has had a failed relationship on the level of having to to recover from it. Great Banter. Characters feel like real people, and the descriptions are so good I can almost taste the bourbon!

Oh my gosh. Where do I even start?? This sweet, funny, totally character driven novel somehow gave me everything I was looking for. Our main character, Olivia, is both relatable and HILARIOUS. I found myself laughing out loud at several moments while also nodding along with her and thinking things like “girl, SAME”.

And Adam. Oh, Adam. He’s just?? So dreamy. So adorable. I think I’m in love with him which is problematic because he’s fictional. There’s something about him that is the perfect blend of sweet cinnamon roll and tall-dark-and-sexy that was making me both sigh dreamily and also hyperventilate throughout this entire novel.

But what I loved the most about this book is it isn’t all just fluff- it has depth. It deals with very raw themes that we can all relate to and adds real, relatable conflict to the story. I LOVE that each character feels so fully rounded out and real. That’s the stuff that really draws me in and this book has no shortage of it. I completely fell in love with the entire cast and finishing the book felt akin to saying goodbye to friends. I hope there will be a sequel!! If you’re looking for your next great read, I can’t recommend Dibs enough!!!

3.5 stars rounded to 4 for this contemporary coworker romance. Olivia and Adam both work for a wholesome, nationwide outdoorsy nonprofit. It's something like the Boy Scouts but more intense, meaning that the employees get some serious training.

And that's where Adam and Olivia really meet. They're sent on a 2 week training course (aka "indoctrination camp") where they live in a hotel, all expenses paid... while they take 12 hours of classes every day and have to room with other employees. The setup was both completely unbelievable and at the same time, totally believable. Since Adam and Olivia actually had careers before joining the Council, they're two of the older participants at the indoctrination camp. They bond while the rest of the campers take advantage of their trip to party.

Olivia's roommate Lorrie calls "dibs" on Adam (who is apparently the hottest participant there - honestly, he's also competing against men in their early 20s, so we can understand the appeal), but Adam has other ideas. One of the things we liked the most about the book was that Lorrie, who at times plays the role of antagonist, is more complex than she first appears. Olivia is in her own head A LOT, so it was nice to have an uncomplicated foil at her side.

This was definitely an enjoyable novel! Although it did not end up being as steamy as we expected, it was heartwarming and more relatable than we thought (considering that almost the entirety takes place at indoctrination camp!).

I have a thing for Adams.
Terribly embarrassing to admit, but the main male character’s name sealed the deal for me: I had to try dibs. (I am one of those people who reads book samples before buying. And one of my own MCs was named for the First Man.)
Had I met Adam Burkhardt in real life, I would have called dibs too. From the moment he grabbed poor nervous Olivia’s hand on the plane, heading for a claustrophobic two-week work conference, I was all in.
But it isn’t Olivia who calls dibs. She’s still busted up from the end of a bad relationship, and while she is quite clear on Adam’s many attractions, she’s not the aggressive type. Unlike her hotel roommate. Indeed, she’s not sure she’s anyone’s type.
Inch by inch, note by note, step by step Olivia and Adam creep toward each other . . . until you, the reader, can barely stand it. But former heartbreaks and far, far too many people swirling around keep them from falling passionately into each other’s arms.
Will they? Won’t they? And how much bourbon will they consume before you find out?
Either way, let me say: Adam and bourbon. Yum. A winning combination.

Fun summer read! Not the usual romantic novel, but very real emotions are dealt with. The main female character is one some women will relate to, shut down by her husband, and believes she is the loser. Divorced, career-focused, and sent to a convention only to discover she is surrounded by new college grads starting their first job making her feel like a fish out of water. Is she the loser her ex-husband made her out to be or will she discover her worth? Her convention roomie is trying to help and called dibs on the one guy her age. No spoilers here, worth reading to find out how it all ends up!

This was a fun, lighthearted romance with heart.

If you've ever been forced to waste time at a training conference for your job, this is the perfect fantasy for you. Olivia meets Adam, the man of her dreams, on the plane ride to such a conference...though she won't even admit to herself she's attracted to him. Throughout the next week, the company history and other material she is supposed to be learning take a back seat to the social aspects of the training, especially when her perky roommate calls "dibs" on Adam, yet he only seems to have eyes for Olivia.

Don't we all wish we could meet a hunky workmate who becomes much more than that while at such a training?

Although this is a lighthearted story and Olivia's awkwardness leads to a lot of amusing situations, this isn't a shallow story in the slightest. Olivia and Adam are both nursing broken hearts, and Olivia must learn not to let her past get in the way of the present and future she could have with Adam if only she'll let herself.

You'll probably read this all in one afternoon, as I did, and then be sad the book is finished. Highly recommended for anyone who is between romance novels at the moment.

I don’t regularly read romance—but I really should because when I do it almost always makes me feel happy. Dibs was no exception.

Reading Dibs felt like I was meeting real people in a relatable situation, and the characters were anything but one-dimensional. They were attractive but imperfect, wounded but hopeful. Martine is a talented writer who unfolds an excellent slow-burn romance complicated by work relationships—while serving up a perfect book for lovers of HEA.

Dibs is a slow burn romance that had me laughing and smiling. Each character is well thought out and developed, and it was easy to feel like I was right there with them. Martine does an excellent job of building the world around her characters so that the reader knows exactly what's going on and when. From the first meet-cute to the touching ending and the friendships built along the way, this romance was easy to read and even easier to enjoy!

Shout “Dibs” and Grab Your Copy!

A thoroughly entertaining read. Allison Martine is a great storyteller with a charming, quirky voice for her characters. I liked Olivia from her first encounter with the shrimp, and Adam is going to set a lot of readers' hearts aflutter -- no doubt about it. And Lorrie had me cringing and rolling my eyes more than once. I tried rationing my reading time in order to make this one last. I'm looking forward to Allison Martine's next book, which I’ve heard is due out this fall. Yay!

Dibs is a delightful, romantic read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Both Olivia and Adam were wonderful characters. Sometimes I wanted to push them together and say “JUST KISS ALREADY!” which shows how invested I was in their relationship.

I also enjoyed the work environment that was set up and how realistic it all seemed. At times I felt like I was in the conference with everyone listening to the history of the Ranchers.

I think Martine did an excellent job of writing a slow slow slow burn romance. The careful way she slowly revealed their shared trauma and strengthened their friendship was masterfully done.

This is a must read for any contemporary romance lovers. I can’t wait to start book two!

Sometimes it’s fun to get swept away in an epic love story – the castles, the handsome prince, the jeweled gowns and masquerades. Nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, I don't always have the energy, as a reader, to maintain that level of investment in a romantic saga. Sometimes you just want to get to the heart of the matter, the heart of the story, the heart of the main characters.

That’s where Dibs excels as a love story. Set in contemporary Austin, Texas, Olivia goes on a work training trip that quickly evolves into something she’s not sure she’s prepared for. The author’s brisk pacing and engaging dialog sweep the story along, even as Olivia has a hard time letting her guard down. We can see the flirtation, the meaning behind a suggestive phrase, but Olivia is still learning how to trust others again, and how to trust herself. Her journey unfolds with the help of the dashing Adam, who seems to be too good to be true … but who has some surprises of his own. Will Olivia trust herself to feel again? Is Adam as dreamy as he seems?

Sometimes it's fun to imagine myself a princess – but sometimes it’s even better to imagine getting brunch with your best friend, and getting fully immersed in her tale of a whirlwind romance that doesn’t strain believability. For a spirited, funny, and real-feeling romance, call Dibs on this book!

Ms. Martine has crafted a cheeky and delightful read with a hint of spice and a dollop of barbeque sauce.. If you enjoy light-hearted romance, or good books in general, this one should go to the top of your “to read” list. Dibs is perfect for the beach, snuggled up for the winter, dreaming of adventures while quarantined, or simply an accompaniment to a glass of good bourbon.

Texas in the summer may be hot, but it just got a little hotter when Olivia Markham and crew settle in for two weeks of boring days and fun-filled nights at the company’s corporate training. Unlike her doubly-carbonated personality of a roommate, Olivia is really there just for the training, just to get over what promised to be the most boring two weeks of her life. Boy she couldn’t have judged that more incorrectly if she’d tried. In addition to the cast of fun and crazy characters from territories all over the country whom Olivia gets to know and cherish, she also meets Adam Burkhardt, a gorgeous sequoia of a man. Despite her overly effervescent roommate calling dibs on him right away, Adam seems much more interested in Olivia, who has taken her loads of emotional baggage, and formed a wall around her heart. What follows is a humorous, heartfelt story of healing and growth (not to mention reader wish fulfillment!) that proves to all of us that no one is too broken to be loved and accepted for just who they are.

A fun, sweet romance with a real sexy edge to it. The story follows Olivia as she fumbles her way through re-building her life after a relationship break-up. Everything is thrown off kilter when she meets Adam. He's charming, sexy, caring and loves bourbon but is Olivia ready for a new relationship? The relationship between the two MCs builds brilliantly and keeps the reader hooked. I also really enjoyed the supporting characters!

I read this book while at the beach and it was the PERFECT beach read. I immediately was swept into the story of Olivia and Adam and I became attached to them both as if they were my close friends. The author does a phenomenal job of writing characters who are relatable, likable, and real. The plot is at the same time entertaining and rich with depth. I found myself laughing out loud from the first line, and also being moved to tears as I delved into the broken hearts of the characters.

The ending was both satisfying and left me wanting more. A great read from start to finish!

Though contemporary romance is not usually my go-to genre, I read this based on some recommendations from friends. I ended up really enjoying this book due in part to the deeply heartfelt parts as well as the comedy.

Martine delivers a well-balanced mix of comedy and seriousness. There is enough depth to the book to make you root for the main character, Olivia, as she deals with her insecurities after a traumatic divorce. Though he comes off as perfect and totally swoon-worthy, the love interest, Adam, also has some depth to him.

The slow burn over the entire book kept me hooked, and I repeatedly wanted to yell "JUST KISS DANG IT!!!" If you're into slow burn romances, this is a great book for you. There is some spice, but it does not get overly explicit.

A charming and steamy romance; dibs offers an addictive relationship that you will quickly come to love.

Reviewed by Katherine Williams for Reedsy.

Dibs is a romance novel that will make you smile and swoon, possibly at the same time. The story’s protagonist, Olivia, finds her love Adam during an unexpected time in her life. From the moment Olivia is introduced, you quickly get the sense that she is a strong, humorous and relatable young lady. She has a backstory that many people can relate to and I was surprised to discover all of the serious themes that were explored through her. She has a rough past when it comes to love and she eventually learns that it is okay to let her guard down for the right person. My favorite part of this novel are its characters; each one is fleshed out brilliantly and is given a unique and honest voice. Olivia and Adam’s romance is both sexy and lovely; I found myself getting sucked into Adam’s charm and cheering for Olivia as she navigated through their relationship. Sometimes in romance novels it feels like the characters’ relationships are forced, however I feel Adam and Olivia are meant to be together. They work hard to get to know each other well because they know it will benefit them in the long run. They respect and understand each other. Their love for each other is special.

I like this book. Allison Martine’s writing is well done; she does a great job at developing well rounded characters. The plot is fun and although predictable at times, does keep you on the edge of your seat. The story’s pacing is quick overall, although sometimes certain descriptions slow down the story quite a bit. Near the ending I felt the story was slowing down a little too much but not so much that it made me stop reading. All in all, it is easy to get through and I had a hard time putting it down. I did finish this book in one sitting and I can easily imagine most people reading this story within a day or two. I feel it is a great escape from everyday life and feel that many people will come to love this story and its characters. I suggest this book to anyone who wants an amusing and lovable read. This novel teaches you how to treat your partner the right way. It also teaches you that even if you get your heart broken, you should always take a chance on love.

This book was a light, enjoyable read. It tells the story of Olivia, a woman who has suffered a traumatic divorce and is sent to a deliciously ridiculous company training, where she meets Adam, an attractive co-worker with a very similar past. The novel is full of funny situations (which are even funnier if you have ever found yourself in a similar business setting/business trip where you are suddenly forced to live with your co-workers and are striped off most of your accustomed privacy in order to share rooms with them like a teenager). Both main characters feel real and relatable and Adam is absolutely adorable. The author really makes you want them end up together. But of course you will have to read the book to find out whether Olivia manages to overcome her past traumas with Adam or not...
The side characters are lovely too: I really enjoyed Lorrie's and Eddie's appearances.
I'd recommend this book to contemporary romance fans, and I'm really looking forward to the second part!

Martine is an amazing storyteller, but where she really excels is character development. The characters in "Dibs" were so alive that I could picture each and every one of them as if I'd met them all in real life. To say that this particular book is a slow burn (a term I've only recently discovered) is an understatement -- every time you thought the deed was going to happen you had to cool off and wait... and wait... leaving the reader tortured and needing to continue. For those of you who prefer romance novels without the sex scenes, this is definitely the book for you, but don't let that deter you because this book is just as hot and steamy without them. I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book in Martine's Bourbon series!

A tad disappointing!
Olivia is on a work-related retreat, in the woods, with what I thought were other adults. Well until the story kept revealing just how childish and immature some of these "adults" are.
Grown women, secure in who they are, do not let bullies call "dibs" on a super terrific man, who not only is she interested in, but who is extremely interested in her. Olivia is too cowardly in her personal life, while really successful in her corporate career. Makes you wonder why, until her sleazy husband's actions are revealed.
The ending of the story was too abrupt as well!

This is the perfect romance novel and debut for Allison Martine.

Each character is brilliantly fleshed out, and the main character, Olivia, is so relatable. I felt like I was involved the whole time and fell in love just as she did.

Martine has a great style and balances humour and emotional scenes wonderfully.

In these difficult times, what we read is even more important than usual.

I would normally read thrillers, murders and that type of thing, but I’ve had to stop because they stay with me and I find myself unable to shake them off, even though I know they are fiction.

When I was told about dibs by Allison Martine, I knew I had to read it - and I’m glad I did.

The story centres on the character of Olivia who has found herself adrift after a shock divorce. She is trying to find some stability but, like so many of us, is floundering. She takes on a job that will keep her too busy to think. I found it so easy to relate to her.

Sent on a training course, Olivia finds herself thrown together with the very dishy Adam, a gentle giant who works for the same company.

The pair find themselves strongly attracted to each other but try to bury their feelings. Olivia is afraid to trust or let go. She can’t bear to be hurt again. She’s not sure how Adam feels.

Will the pair make it through their initial insecurity?

The reader certainly hopes so!

What I love about the story is that it’s a lovely romance, gentle and sweet. The reader is swept along by the romance of the situation.

The book is funny and sad by turns. It made me laugh out loud several times and even cry.

The book is extremely well written. The reader is taken on a journey and know they are in safe hands due to the light guidance of this wonderful writer. She expertly guides you through the story’s twists and turns.

To me, the writing felt real in a way very few books are. I could feel and see the characters, cheer for Adam and Olivia, groan at the silly Lorrie who is Olivia’s very young and ‘blonde’ roommate. I felt as though I was there at the training session with her, suffering through the boring lessons in the training room, sitting in the hot tub and feeling out of place among the group she is with.

What amazed me is that the book had very few mistakes. There have been so many in the ones I've read recently.

One of my favourite scenes is the barbecue they are sent to. I wanted to join in and grab some of that food myself. I was Olivia as she sat, pressed against this new man who was clearly as interested in her as she was in him.

How can she relax and embrace the changes in her life? Is she brave enough to take the risk? I won’t spoil it but I will say that this book would sit very proudly on any romance reader’s bookshelf.

The book did not once lose my interest - in fact, I grew more engrossed as the story progressed.

We are all stuck at home at the moment - and I hope you’re all safe. Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of this book. Engage in a bit of fun and escapism which is guaranteed to take you away to your own utopia to spend with your perfect imaginary hunk!

This is one of those which automatically rank highly in my book. The wonderful thing (FOR ME - I'm not judging anyone) is that there is so much left to the imagination. She doesn't throw the sex in your face. I always judge a book by a 10 star system. 1-4, I hate/don't like the book. 6-10, I like/love it. 5 is for those which I'm conflicted about for some reason. (sorry, it works for me) This book falls into a category of its own though: 10*!

Grab your copy now - you can thank me later!

I gotta admit that it took me a while to get into this book but once things got going for me, I couldn’t put it down! Olivia and Adam’s forming friendship and their secret interest in each other had me so invested! The little touches, their little moments together, gah. I loved watching them evolve into something real.

And some of the other characters were so funny and fun to follow along on their escapades. Olivia’s roommate, although she was annoying at times, was so fun to see what she would do next, or more who she would try to do next hahaha.

I’m excited about the fact that there are more books in this series. Because there are a lot of characters I would love for them to get their own story. But what I’m even more excited about is that we get more of Olivia and Adam in the next one!! Can’t wait!!

Although this was an insta love story and we all know by now how I feel about those, it didn’t feel like one because it was all well done. Dibs was a great debut novel and I am really looking forward to read more books by Allison Martine.

This is my first book by this author and boy does she have a gift for getting characters just right.
A great story but each character so well written. Our main protagonist Olivia has been worn down by an cheating now ex husband and she really needs to get her confidence back. She is sent away on a two week training course with much younger executives apart from a scant few. Luckily one of these is Adam. Well he is just delicious.
The story is so well written, no smutty language is needed as the book is just brimming with great character driven plot.
A great read I'm sure by the pool in summer but right now in London, just coming out of a pandemic and a very cold wet spring it is just the book to get you in a good mood. it truly is a ray of sunshine.
I will certainly miss these people over the next few days as I have enjoyed being in their lives. Oh and yes I would go to his loft too Olivia........
I was given a copy of this book by voracious readers only.

I really enjoyed Dibs. I found the main character (Olivia) and her struggles to be relatable. At first, I really despised a character I'm going to dub "Orange Soda" for the purposes of this review, but she grew on me by the end.

The back and forth, push and pull of the central relationship kept the pages turning for me. While the romance is technically sort of a whirlwind (the major events of the book take place over the course of a two-week company training event), it is a slow burn in the sense that the author takes the time to build it over the course of the entire book. I also enjoyed the characters' humor.

I was kind of disappointed there wasn't just a little more steam, but that's not a prerequisite for enjoying a book. Still, if you're looking for steamy, this one might not be for you.

Contemporary romance usually isn't my jam, but Dibs has me hooked and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
