Stonecroft Saga #5

Raiders Of The Rockies

Rate this book
By any measure, they would be considered old-timers in the mountains of the uncharted territory. Land that had been known as French Louisiana and Spanish Colonial Louisiana, was largely unexplored. The two old-timers were young men that had spent the last two years in that uncharted territory and had taken women from the Shoshone people as their brides. But their long-held dream and goal was to discover and explore the vast lands of the western wilderness and they set out to do just that. But when renegade Coureur des bois of the Hudson’s Bay Company and trappers of the Northwest company decide to abandon the fur companies and seek their fortune by raiding the native villages, the two young friends and their women stand in their way.

But the raiders and their renegade Indian scouts will not be dissuaded and set out to pillage and rampage their way through the lands of the Assiniboine, Crow, and Shoshone, letting nothing or no one stand in their way. Even the two men, experienced in the wilderness though they were, would they be a match for a much larger band of raiders and renegades? The life and death struggle will bathe the wilderness in the blood of both raiders and explorers, and the screams of the tortured will echo through the canyons of the wilds.

Bob Rundell – Stonecroft Saga Bk 5 – Raiders of the Rockies – Reviewed 5/14/20 – Read 5/7/20
Even with an injury, no one takes his woman or his best friend!

The boys, Gabe (Bear Claw), and Ezra (Black Buffalo) along with Pale Otter (Gabe’s bride), and Grey Dove (Ezra’s bride) in addition to their new companion to the group, Wolf (an orphaned wolf pup) have spent the winter getting to know each other as a group. Now that winter is over the boys have decided to continue with their exploration of the west. For a moment the brides were unsure of them accompanying them, but was quickly assured that they were forever wives and would always be part of the boy's lives. As they set out to explore new areas they are set upon with new adventures, such as a VERY large grizzly that decided to check them out. Luckily, the grizzly decided that the odds were not in his favor so he departed with a growl.

In another area, several men that had previously worked trapping for the Hudson Bay Company, very unhappy with their pay, decided to band together with a few others. The group would then make their fortune by raiding the Indian villages and taking anything that would bring them money, especially Native American Women, and destroying anything that got in their way. Now, of course, you guessed it, our boys and their wives were in a direct path of this newly formed group of renegades. With the sounds of the screams and life and death hanging in the balance for many - the story begins….

What did I like? Bob’s books are such a pleasure to read. Not only is there action, and excitement of the explorative adventures of the boys, but also the easy-going way that he brings faith into the picture without making a reader feel uncomfortable. I love the companionship of the men, and now the addition of the wives. Both men have such a love for the beauty of the world, and the wonders of nature along with a love for their mounts. Bob has a gift for the way that he bridges these qualities of the men and the world together so that you and I can see and darn near feel these same feelings.

What will you like? Another great adventure filled with incredible, exciting, and exhilarating action. The storyline is extremely interesting, filled with a story that was very common in the times. Men that went rogue with the thoughts of gaining fortunes at the expense of anything or anyone that got in their way. When good and bad clash, there is no way that it is not going to be sensational!! With Bob’s gift of descriptions, you will see the beauty of the mountains, the size of the grizzly, the flight of the birds, the scamper of the small animals, and other wonders of the world in your mind’s eye. Along with those descriptions and details the scent of the grizzly, mountain air, and Arbuckle will drift below your nose. You will almost hear the agony and pain of the villages, the roar of the bear, the scream of the birds, and the trickle of the streams. All of these together will give you a most wonderous read that brings the WEST alive again. Don’t miss out, get your copy today. Also, check out the great talk that Bob and I had, as my May Featured Author.

It's Spring and the friends decide to leave their cabins and see some of the prettiest country on God's green earth. Gabe, Otter, Ezra and Dove are under no illusions that there would be no problems. Good thing, too. There are plenty of Indians, not all of them friendly and there is a group of well armed raiders that are looking to increase their stolen goods. Thinking they have killed Gabe, they take the other 3 captive to be sold as slaves along with their stolen pelts. Plenty of action and excitement!

Book 5 finds Gabe and Otter, Ezra and Dove heading further west. They run into a bunch of Raiders who have been plundering Crow villages. They capture Ezra and the women and leave Gabe for dead. Gabe must try to rescue them before they reach the Missouri. Best of the series so far.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of the book in this series. I love the Ministry, excitement and the newly weds romance that has been added in the last two books. Keep writing. I am not looking forward to the last book. It is a series that could keep going for as long as can be and I would never tire from reading it. Tank You Mr Rundell.

A decent story of the ongoing saga of Gabe and Ezra exploring the new frontier. When Ezra and their wife’s are captured a band of slave traders, Gabe follows rescues them. The story takes place in modern day Yellowstone Park and has plenty of action and intrigue.

This is one of the most enjoyable early frontier novels this reader has ever found. Although some real world horror and prejudices, its overall theme could be described as an early frontier fair tale, enjoyable for young and old.

Another rousing adventure

I cannot honestly say that I know how close to reality this might be, but nothing in it is inconsistent with what I do know of the times.
And it's very enjoyable.

Excellent rescue story

The newly married are inseparable until they are attack, Gabe thought dead, and the rest enslaved by renegade men. It really shows the slippery slope that is hard to turn from. Clean, relational, spiritual story. Highly recommended for all readers.
