A beautiful book with some fantastic stories inside. The world building for League is on another level completely, and this book just furthers that sentiment. The artwork (easily the best team in League of Legends) knocks it out of the park with this book, showing some of the most beautiful illustrations of landscapes, cities, architecture, characters etc. etc.
Gostei bastante!
League of Legends: Realms of Runeterra is not quite a concept art book, but it has concept art for the lore behind the game, League of Legends. It goes into each realm and talks about its way of life, the people and creatures that live there, and pieces of history that make it unique. It is such a beautiful book that I would recommend for fans of fantasy, fantasy concept art, video games, storytelling (even though it's a companion, not a novel), and TTRPGs.
The worldbuilding is astounding and will stay with me for a long time. There is just so much talent, both raw and refined, poured into this project that it is a constant source of inspiration. I can't quite comment on how it relates to game—truth be told, I'm here because of Arcane—but I loved reading every detail of the League of Legends world. Maybe that made it better for me because I had no idea going into it (and had no basis for comparison), but I for one had a wonderful time.
I am beyond happy I found League of Legends: Realms of Runeterra! It has a hundred illustrations of Runeterra, and more; with text to accompany the world of LoL. Also, it has insights into architecture, politics, and more. A great encyclopedia of the world for all gamers and fans of the show Arcane. I can’t wait to give this to my boyfriend as a gift! Happy reading!♥️
Ok. Sooo we all agree to love League of Legends for what a fantastic world it brought us? Good.
No, for real: With every short story, every cinematic trailer, every artwork - I fall in love with the world of runeterra again and again. Sure the lore is not perfect in every aspect and riot still got a lot of revamping to do. But damn, I haven't seen such a varied and rich world in a while. Every country has something to be curious about. I'll consume everything that the people of riot delivery with great pleasure, cause I just can't get enough content from them. I mean, jesus, I'm already thinking on how to implement a D&D campaign into this setting.
So how is this official companion book now? Even though I am a sucker for everything that riot does, I gotta say this book is not flawless. Some of the shortstories where teeeedious to read, and the way the layout editors worked with varying fonts was... at best fun and interesting to look at, and at worst just dreadful to decipher.
But maybe that's just the design student in me... (It's not. My brother disliked it as well.)
Still, Kudos to all the artist and authors who worked on this. Pls give me more.
Best game lore in the world. If you don’t agree you’re wrong.
I really enjoy the mini stories that each region has, they make the descriptions and characteristics of the people, culture, and settings feel more tangible.
I was disappointed a bit coz it was boring. Short stories weren’t about the main characters. I guess I just expected to read more about the main characters and their adventures.
A fascinating guide to the huge wealth of talent behind the League setting. Beautiful art, detailed worldbuilding, a handful of short stories that are satisfying and attention-grabbing. Definitely worth picking up if you're at all curious about the setting.
I only have two gripes: one, that not every region has all that much detail (Demacia and Noxus have like 20 pages each, the relatively new Ixtal has about 4, and that makes sense... but Bandle City only has two pages total??) and two, that a few of the short stories rely too heavily on League characters.
I know it seems strange to criticize the League worldbook for having League characters, but the best stories are the ones that focus on the people, and their lifestyles and day-to-day struggles. The Noxus story is probably my favorite - it details a recently-conquered town as its people adjust to life under a new banner - and I don't think it mentions any champions by name at all. Even so, you get a sense of what the regional culture, the attitudes toward what's good and bad, what made the region strong.
And then you have the Shadow Isles story, which is a murder mystery that the reader will either solve immediately (if they're at all familiar with the games) or be utterly confused by (caution, this paragraph contains spoilers). There's some good worldbuilding early on, as the characters go through their daily routines, showing why they choose to live in such a dangerous area, and then... gasp! All the boats are trapped in chains made of blood! And people are dying! "Oh by the way," says the mysterious aristocrat, "my name is Vladmir." If you're familiar with League, the story's tension is immediately gone. If you aren't familiar, too bad, the story assumes you are and never goes into detail on who he is or what he can do, it just shows you the effects of what he does and assumes you'll nod your head and say "yeah, that's Vlad for you."
I know I spent a whole paragraph on one negative thing but there's so much good in the book beyond that. Cool concept art, history (including a historical timeline!), and lots of details on the lesser-known bits of lore. Definitely worth picking up.
3.75 stars I'm reading another book of my favorite game from back in the day. I can't say for myself that I know everything about League of Legends, but through this book I do know more about the culture and places in the Realms of Runeterra. There are also stories in it... I didn't know that. I thought it was just an art book where you can only see information and the styles the game is based on.
In my opinion, this is really an underrated book of art that shows you how the worlds work. The second season of Arcane can now come a little faster.
For new League fans “Realms of Runeterra” shines as a well constructed introduction to many regions of this fictional world. On the flip side, for long time lore enthusiasts such as myself, these region summaries are just a refresher, true value is found in the beautiful short stories exclusively written for this book.
just absolutely amazing, art was very well done, suspenseful short stories, DETAIL, so much detail, just wow riot you've really created something amazing with LoL
League of Legends lore is so extensive that it is hard to believe all of this is for a game. I loved how they kept all the hidden/unexplored parts of Runeterra (like Ixtal, Bandle City, etc.) a mystery yet gave just enough details to know their charm. As someone who plays the game, it is awesome to explore the Realms of Runeterra.
I loved the illustrations and overall look of the book. The short storys help creating a feeling for the different regions beside their champions. It helps to make it feel more real. The book is good with creating different settings and depicting so inividual regions without making them too similar to each other. Every different region is interesting and feels alive. The illustrations were soo good and helpful to understand cultural differences better!!
Interesting read. I really enjoyed the sections about the different places and cultures, but I was less interested in the short stories sprinkled throughout the book. Some of them just seemed a little out of place and others were not as engaging as I would have expected.
Not a bad book though. The informational sections are definitely worth reading, as they provide a lot of background lore for the game itself.
Arcane sucked me in and I was frothing at the mouth for more lore/information, so decided to pick this up. It's a lovely blend of concept art and lore with a short story for every region/nation featured as well. The book is nicely made, though I kind of wish the paper was glossy instead of matte - feel like the quality of the images suffered slightly as a result - but that's just me nitpicking.
As a huge fan of world-building it is so awesome to see a book dedicated to the incredible world of Runeterra. The artistry is amazing and you really get a sense of how invested the makers of League have always been in what they produce. I wish they would consider making a proper CRPG for fans of the greater world outside of the lanes of Leagues many maps. Like I'm just saying Larian Studios is looking towards their next project - I know Larian is the antithesis of Riots money hungry CEOs but what if we let the storytellers at the company make some more cool projects? We all saw how well Arcane did...
Like could you imagine the world that the makers of Baldur's Gate 3 could make with the lore of Runeterra? Then add the artistry of fortiche, the writers of Arcane and a good old lovely budget to the panel and BOOMSHAKALAKA WE ARE MAKING MILLIONS!
Now back to talking about this book - can we please get another one that talks about the champions in the same style? Pretty please?
Obviously it’s a book that accompanies the video game League of Legends and it’s full of lore of the world and its inhabitants.
I highly recommend this if you’re a big fan of the game. Even if you never heard of LoL, the short stories and art of each region of Runeterra can leave you hooked—eventually speed running the entire book in two days (as I have.)
Although the book is “average” in terms of size, you definitely get a lot of re-readability through checking out the concept art and theory-crafting potential champions or even write your own add-on to the existing world.
Have I mentioned that the art is absolutely beautiful?
A beautiful illustrated and stylized tour through the various regions of Runeterra. The regions are brought to life by short stories throughout, which is a nice touch. However, the stories are occasionally too simple for my taste, and the book ends abruptly without a sense of conclusion.
An interesting read for anyone who knows the game. Does carry forth a lot of the problems with League lore in general though. My main thought of that being you suddenly get a piece of lore information that makes you realize either 1) something they tried to convey before has been unclear for years or 2) it just was brand new in here and now you have to rethink characters/a region (the first think that comes to mind for me with this is vastayan ages/aging).
It gave me tidbits of information (some cool!) that seemed very miscellaneous and some genuinely new information, as a person who's mostly tried to keep up on lore as it comes out (there are definitely people who are better at that than me though). I say miscellaneous because there isn't a baseline of like "We'll cover x part of all regions," what kind of information you get on each region is somewhat random. And because of that it does feel very lacking at the same time. This really really would have been the opportunity to give us actual information about Bandle City (which honestly, I feel like we deserve some with how many characters are technically from there) but at this point I'm just going to assume they're not going to ever focus on it? It gets three paragraphs in here. Literally just a page spread that's mostly illustration. The Targon section is also pretty small which was personally disappointing since that's my favourite region.
That being said OH MY GOD A TIMELINE. THERE'S A TIMELINE. Very general (if you want like character ages, there's nothing that specific), it goes over major events in relationship to the founding of Noxus (so when the Rune Wars happened, Azir's failed ascension, etc). That was like the shining lore gem in here. The short story "The Daring Darling" was FABULOUS, and "Water & Shade to You" was lovely too.
