If you visit Mt. St. Helens, you MUST read this book! The author had access to 85 years worth of uncatalogued oral histories of people from around Spirit Lake area. He was provided information from many other people, including the U.S. Forest Service and several mountaineers. The book takes you right up to that fateful day, May 18, 1980. I like how the author ends his book with the words, "....smoke and ash cannot and did not snuff out their (Spirit Lake people) indomitable human spirit."
