A fantasy comedy adventure! -- Destined to become a wizard & save the world, Chauncy got a job instead. 25 years later, destiny is pissed. And this time, it won’t take no for an answer!
When destiny knocked on Chauncy's door, someone else answered it...and told destiny to take a hike. So instead of going on a grand adventure to become a great and powerful wizard so he could save the world from certain destruction, Chauncy got a job.
Twenty-five years later, destiny came for Chauncy a second time...and when he told it to take a hike, it knocked him out, tied him up, and kidnapped him.
Now Chauncy has no choice but to go on the grand adventure he'd been putting off, to become a great and powerful wizard. Except he doesn't believe in magic, and he doesn't particularly believe in destiny either. Problem is, if he doesn't fulfill his destiny, the world as he knows it will end. And even if he does learn to become the wizard he should have been long ago, it might be too late anyway!
Experience this (inappropriate) fantasy comedy from the author of the Runic series and the Magic of Havenwood series!
DISCLAIMER: This book contains inappropriate depictions of inappropriate people doing inappropriate things. Including, but certainly not limited to, inappropriate language and veiled connotations of the naughty variety. And of course, inappropriate magic.
Clayton Wood is the author of six fantasy series. He's been a computer programmer, graphics designer, martial-arts instructor, and now works in the medical field.
Writing was always Clayton's passion, but it wasn't until the birth of his first son that he found the inspiration necessary to finish his first book. Five years later, he published Runic Awakening, the first entry in the Runic Series. With eleven books published, he doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon!
I just could not get into this. I spent a week trying over and over again, thinking eventually it would click. At 20%, I realized it wasn't going to happen, and I was just wasting time. Time I could be spending reading something much more enjoyable. I used to beat myself up for anything that ended up on the DNF (Did Not Finish) shelf. Not anymore! Life is too short to read bad novels, and there's too much material out there, to put that type of pressure on myself.
There's just so many issues with this book, I'm not even sure where to begin.
There's a lot of holes in the story. Poorly developed and executed, leaving this reader wanting more expansion on what was happening.
Where extra details are provided, they seemed trivial, or just unnecessary to the storyline.
It reads more along the lines as juvenile, but because of the constant sexual innuendos, and sometimes straight out mentioning, this would never pass for YA. Maybe I just didn't read far enough in, to understand the importance of these, other than in reference to the title word of "Inappropriate." These references weren't even presented in a strategic manner to appear to have any bearing on the storyline, but more so in an almost disrespectful, poking fun at demeanor.
There's very little character building presented by 20%, I felt no sense of connection, empathy, or attachment nor interest to any of them.
The main character comes off as a weak, whining, depressing, self entitled, passive-aggressive individual, and it makes it hard to create any inroads towards caring what their futures may hold.
The small amount of magic scattered throughout the book so far, is another area where development lacks.
World building, which is especially key in Fantasy novels, lacks expansion and elaboration. Maybe they should've just tagged the book as satirical and humorous, and left off the fantasy tag altogether.
For having an average rating of 4, and 5 books to the series so far, it obviously appeals to an appreciative, selective and dedicated audience. I just don't appear to be in that bracketed subgroup.
Can not recommend for the majority of readers out there.
If you merged Harry Potter for adults with Terry Pratchett's Discworld add in buckets of humour and a totally irreverent outlook on all things proper and accepted you would have some idea of how good this book is. An absolute gem highly recommend a must-read,Baz
Took a bit for me to initially get into the story but once I did it turned out to German excellent story, kind of reminded me of myth conception series by Robert Asprin. Chauncey was a bit of an pain but as time went he finally was able accept his destiny and to have some fun. In our current world we all should look at our selves and play till we find out own magic just as Chauncy had...
The only thing inappropriate about this book was how little magic there was. It was pretty boring with lots of stupid sexual jokes involving the elderly (I kept expecting some frat boy to pop up with a "that's what she said") and it tried too hard to sort of parody much more entertaining books. I really wanted to like it but instead it felt like it took eons to read and that my life force was being drained.
OK read for the airplane. Some of the early scenes, particularly the hero's grandmother's handling of the wizard who comes to ask her grandson to come with him on a quest, were good. The grand villain of the piece is the owners of a corporation trying to capture all the magic of the land, while not caring about the destruction of everything good in the land. This does read like a YA book and although it was readable, I'm not going on in the series.
I really wanted to like this book, lots of good reviews and it sounds fun. I gave up just under half way through, as I just wasn't wanting to pick it up. Bits were good, and I probably could have finished it if I'd made a concerted effort, and previously I would have (but I'm trying really hard to stop reading books which don't keep me hooked). I may revisit it at some point if I ever find it for loan on audio, but not right now.

Clayton has written a story that works on many levels. It is an inspirational story of man's effort to survive. It is a cautionary tale of the use and misuse of spiritual abilities. And finally, it is a fascinating adventure story that promises to introduce a series of related tales.
These fantasy "yes, you're magic and you must save the world" novels can get old and formulaic. Not this one! What a refreshing start to what may be a fantastic series.
Told in a deadpan, matter-of-fact style, Chauncy's debut works well as a stand-alone, and the epilogue ushers in the idea of the "next". Even if you read just this one, you'll enjoy yourself!
Chauncey learns that he was a chosen one after the death of his grandmother. His humdrum life of a shopkeeper was not supposed to be his destiny. Now he finds himself in the hands of two elderly wizards who want to train him in magic to defeat the Dark One. Only problem is Chauncey doesn't believe magic is real. The journey involved has humor and growth but tended to drag at times. Ending starts the cycle over again.
The book was very affecting, you will definitely end up cheering for unlikely characters. However, it could have used another pass or two by an editor or beta reader with an eye toward consistency as a few times the swapping of details snapped me right out of the story
So much fun. This book offers adventure as well as pearls of wisdom and insight. It also has quite a lot of inappropriate innuendo which adds to the fun. Some of the language might offend so fair warning.
I knew this book was going to be a bit silly going in, but I expected satire and not so many d*ck jokes. That and the several editing errors unfortunately distracted from what could have been a fun adventure.
This was a fun, lively read. The idea behind the plot is true and enduring. Mr. Woods tells an engaging story with likable characters that move along at a lively pace . I look forward to reading the first series he wrote.
Inappropriate Magic was a fun read. It's about a 30 something year old man suddenly thrust into an ongoing quest to save the world. I especially loved the gay, perpetually horny, King Pravus. He could have come across as a stereotype but he surprised me.
Not at all what I expected! But therein lies the magic of this book. From the hilariously “inappropriate” dialog to the way magic is found and worked, this book is a delightful stroll through the “magic apocalypse”. Or is it?
Good story and character development. Might have been a bit rushed development, though. But funny and interesting. Unfortunately, there are several grammatical errors and typos that kind of pulled me out of the story.
Quest chronicle, breezily done in fine style. Entertaining, slightly salacious (tastefully so) and the set-up for the next quest looming on the horizon.
Haven't wanted to read a book in a long time, to be honest, but Facebook showed me a few lines and I was interested. Worth it! This book is great and I finished it in three days. Haven't felt like this since I was a kid. Give it a shot!
I am so happy I found this book. I absolutely loved the charachters, especially Harry and Nettie. While it could be a stand alone, I am overjoyed not see it has a sequel. You will be pleased reading this epic tale of adventure and magic.
I honestly had my doubts about this book but I'm absolutely tickled to be proven wrong. It's reminiscent of Disc World. The humor is crass but it's a laugh a minute. I genuinely hope someone makes it into a movie and soon!
While the plot line was good enough, the writing itself was awful and did nothing to promote the merits of the story. I couldn't get invested in any of the characters because characterization was one dimensional on all levels. Wouldn't really recommend it to anyone, unfortunately.
Cute, very much YA fiction. The sexual innuendos were overdone. A proofreader would have helped the flow, I counted around 15 small errors (i.e. "he" instead of "she"). I'd read more, but will have to find them on a sale rack.
I had a lot of fun reading this. There are a lot of sexual innuendos. Normally that stuff would bother me, but it didn't in this book. I just rolled my eyes and moved on, or ignored it completely. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
This books tries to be too many things. It either needed to be a good spoof with no raunchiness or it needed to be a raunchy wizard tale. It didn't succeed on either front for me.
