Fast Paced!

Zoe, Meredith, and Parker were the 3 musketeers of the trailer park, always supportive of one another. But Zoe is about to start her first job at the resort on the lake as a cabana girl, where Ethan first sees her. Suffering from extreme anxiety, he finds it difficult to introduce himself, but soon he becomes the forth musketeer. Then, Parker finds a body in the shallows and it isn't a stranger. Suddenly these four friends are called in for questioning. And they all have a secret or two.
Like a speed boat, this story begins in high gear and stay fast and steady, as secrets and the truth are revealed.

During these hard times, we need books like these, books that show us the importance of friendship, and the good side of humanity, books that make us FEEL GOOD. The characters are awesome (especially Shirley) and the mystery in the story is just a bonus. A great summer read!

Zoe’s world living in the trailer park seems rather small. She has her best friend Meredith, and the neighbor’s grandson, Parker, to help her escape from her alcoholic mother who parties like she’s still a teenager. But when Zoe gets a job at Crystal Waters, the resort next door, she meets Ethan. He’s quiet and awkward, but she’s drawn to him, and she wants to help him come out of his shell. Zoe, Ethan, and Parker are all carrying their own pain. Healing takes time, but they all help each other in their own way. Add in the death that happens at the beginning of the book, and you have another layer to this already fun story.

I liked all the characters except for Meredith. I get that she is written to be annoying, but the number of times she called Parker “twerp” or degraded him in some way, was over the top. And Zoe wasn’t great at sticking up for Parker. If I was hanging out with people that didn’t get along, I would either not hang out with both at the same time, or I would speak up in defense of the one always picked on. Even outside of her picking on Parker, Meredith didn’t have any redeeming qualities.

But Parker, Ethan, and Zoe? All super fun characters, and I loved how they came together to solve the mystery. I loved Ethan’s quiet strength, how he wants to do the right thing even when it’s hard for him to do. I liked the fact the age difference with Parker wasn’t a factor in their friendship for Zoe, and that she stuck up for what she thought was right.

This was a fun storyline that includes some real-world issues, which I appreciated. What’s funny is when Tully came to me with a review request for this, I hadn’t read her before. But when I was looking at her profile, I realized I bought her other books last year. My TBR is seriously out of control, but I plan to rectify that because she has a new fan. Nicely done.

This is one of those page turner books that has me up late trying to finish the story. The characters were well described. My favorite character was Shirley. I think everyone needs a grandmother like her. It is a story that shows life for upper class individuals along with lower class individuals. It is proof that money does not always buy happiness. This book delves into the world of anxiety, single parent families, friendship, new love, a creepy old man and so much more. This is the first Alex Tully novel I've read and I hope it won't be the last.

Engaging story. So much about relationships - good and bad - in this novel. I loved that aspect of this novel, as well as the mystery that was involved. I would like to read more from this author.

Great story teller

Easy to read . Some people get too descriptive for my liking with too many words . Great suspense to the end. Just all round good book. I liked the characters. Couldn’t put it down.

This was phenomenal...first the characters-Shirley is now one of my all-time favorites. Zoe, Ethan, Meredith and Parker all great in their own ways. I love Alex Tully's books for this reason above all - I actually miss the characters when I'm done reading. And the story itself has everything, romance, mystery, and lots of humor. The perfect summer read and a new favorite!

Will leave you with a smile I write this review as a member of Rosie’s Book Review Team, and I freely chose to review an ARC copy of this novel.
This is the first of Tully’s books I’ve read, although it is the third novel she has published, and in the ‘About the author’ section of her page and her books she describes her stories as ‘feel good’ stories, and she states that she hopes ‘readers will smile after turning the last page’. Well, hope accomplished, as far as I’m concerned.
The book description provides enough clues as to the general plot of the story. This is the story of a summer that changed the lives of the young characters at the centre of the story. Two of them, Zoe and Parker, live in a trailer park at the shore of a lake, just a stone’s throw from a posh resort ‘Crystal Waters’. They both have unconventional families (Parker lost his mother in tragic circumstances, never met his father, and lives with his grandmother, who is the strict but fair and wonderful Shirley; while Zoe lives with her single Mom, Debbie, who refuses to take responsibility for anybody, even herself, and acts much younger than her years). Zoe’s best friend, Meredith, the daughter of the local sheriff, can be pushy and harsh at times, but she is also funny and amusing, and always has Zoe’s back. Ethan, a young boy from the posh side of the divide who has come for the summer, somewhat stumbles into their group dragging his own problems with him. Although his life and circumstances might seem charmed from the outside, his parents’ relationship is a sham, and he suffered a traumatic event one year ago that he has not fully recovered from. It has changed him and turned him into somebody quite different. As the novel advances, we come to realise that Ethan’s change might have been for the better, even if that is not so evident for him at the beginning of the story. The novel fits well into the YA genre, and although the characters are put to the test and have to confront some harsh truths about themselves and others, these are not extreme, brutal or too challenging, and I think the book would be suited to fairly young teens as well, although I’d recommend parents to check it out because there are mentions of drugs, mental health difficulties, a suspicious death, a suggestion of sexual harassment, as well as divorce and drinking.
I liked the way the story is told. It starts with a hook, as we follow Parker on the 5th of July when he makes a shocking discovery, and then we go back a few weeks, to learn more about the characters and how they came to this point. The story is told in the third person, but from the points of view of the three main protagonists, Zoe, Parker, and Ethan, and their emotions and thoughts feel suitable to their ages (Parker is only 11, and he behaves appropriately to his age) and to their circumstances. I also liked the way we get and insight into Ethan’s disturbing thoughts and the way he tries to deal with them. We don’t learn what happened to him until quite late in the story, but by that time we’ve got to know him as he is now, and we can empathise with him even more. The way he and Zoe behave with Parker, as if he were their younger brother, is heart-warming.
I liked Zoe, because she is strong and determined, and I liked the way Meredith can be annoying but also amusing and supportive, and she usually helps lighten up the atmosphere. Shirley is a great character, although like all the adult characters, she does not play as big a part in the story as the young people.
The element of mystery is well resolved and integrated into the story, and I particularly enjoyed the fact that this is not a story of amateur detectives that can find answers and clues the police have missed, pushing the suspension of disbelief, but one where the characters are involved in the story because this is a small community and people’s lives become easily entangled. I also enjoyed the red herrings, twists, and revelations, and the resolution of the plot is very satisfying and hopeful.
The writing is simple and straight forward, without unnecessarily lengthy descriptions, but the author still manages to create a good sense of place and, especially, of the feeling of friendship and affection between the protagonists.
I cannot highlight any major negatives for me. Readers who are looking for diverse characters might not find them here (there are major differences in social class, and this is something the book focuses on, and one of the characters suffers from mental health issues, but no issues of genre, or race are discussed), and although I enjoyed the ending, the fact that the author decides to share the same scene from the point of view of the three main characters in succession results in some minor unavoidable repetitions. This slows down the ending a bit, but it wasn’t something that bothered me in particular. Each chapter is told from a single point of view (apart from the final one), and it is clearly labelled, so that does not cause confusion. I also missed some more interaction between Ethan and his twin sister, who hardly makes an appearance during the book. Ethan thinks about her at times, but she does not have a presence, and she is the only one of the younger characters I didn’t feel I had got to know. Even Heather, one of the cabana girls working with Zoe, has a bigger part than her. Other than that, the book flows well and is fairly cohesive, although the action speeds up towards the end, as is usually the case with mysteries.
I recommend this book to people who enjoy YA fiction, especially, as the author says, ‘feel-good’ fiction, where some important subjects are discussed but in a sensitive rather than a challenging manner. It is an ode to friendship and hope, and it feels particularly suited to the times we’re living. And it will leave readers with a smile.

Good book!

Second book that I have read by Alex Tully. I did not disappoint! It truly shows that family isn't just about blood but about people who come into your life and love you regardless... thru the good and the bad. It also shows that even in bad times that good things happen...that you should never be ashamed of what you can't change especially when you're not in control.

Strong Friendships with a little mystery

Sunny Shores Trailer Park isn't the grandest place to live. But it's the only place Zoe & her stand-in little brother Parker know. The community of Crystal Waters is just an arms length away from their shabby home. Zoe knows that with summer now here it will bring in snobby rich kids & that she will have to wait on them at her new job over at the community pool.

But enter Ethan the awkward boy from the exclusive community of Crystal Waters. He seems a little odd but also intriguing. When really Ethan some anxiety issues from a horrible accident thst happened to him the previous year.

Along side Zoe, Parker and the new boy Ethan we meet Zoe's best friend and loud mouth friend Meredith! The four of them form an unlikely friendship this summer that some could take ages to do!

But one morning their spectacular summer is shook when a dead body washes on the beach...

This book was a pretty good read. I enjoyed the friendship theme a lot and I loved the twist at the end. Yes readers there's always a twist and you'll have to read it to find out.

One character I had a problem with was Zoe's mom but I'm sure I'm not the only one. I hate parents like that.

All in all a good read!

My review of THE LAKE NEVER TELLS by Alex Tully

I truly enjoyed this book all the way through, by a new-to-me author. The characters were well-defined, and I felt as if I personally knew all of them. It delved into the differences between the rich and the poor, with a sweetness that made having less materially was the best option. Knowing right from wrong was another value stressed by Alex Tully. People need to be grateful for what they do have in life, rather than yearning for what cards they were dealt. We all have the choice of changing out futures, and I believe these young folks will be capable of doing that. The ending is a feel good conclusion, despite the loss of a life. What truly happened on one late night on the lake will come as a complete surprise to most! Thanks, Alex Tully, for writing characters that were so real, and compare to people that we're all familiar with. Nice job! Continue doing what you so enjoy!

Zoe lives in a run-down trailer park while Ethan visits his family’s second home in exclusive Crystal Waters where he spends most of his time on the family’s yacht. Last year, Zoe and Ethan would never have met much less become friends. This year, they become friends with a chance for more.

Alex Tully’s Beautiful Chaos was one of the first books I read after I became a book blogger (read my review of Beautiful Chaos here). I really loved it so I was excited to have the opportunity to read The Lake Never Tells. While The Lake Never Tells strikes me as a very different story from Beautiful Chaos, it immediately grabbed my attention and even made me discard the other book I had been reading first and in conjunction just because I needed to know what was going to happen next.

Feel Good

Feel Good YA novel is how was described in the author's bio and that is exactly what it is. A fun and harmless mystery, first love, all in a gorgeous setting -despite the trailer park - all combine to make a pleasant read. There isn't anything scarey or deep and the story is predictable, but it was nice to be on the simple YA level.

A little light reading to get me through a couple of rough weeks at work.

This book has it all. A little romance, a little mystery and some comical moments also.

*I won this book from goodreads giveaways*

So I wasn't really impressed with this book it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I felt like you never got that deep into the characters so there wasn't much of a connection to them. I also had higher hopes for the anxiety angle but that pretty much disappeared about halfway through like it was magically gone and it doesn't work that way. Also the slight mystery aspect wasn't much of one. It also gave me Sarah Dessen vibes like it was trying to be that type of story but nowhere near as well executed. This book just wasn't for me but I'm sure there are plenty of people that will enjoy it.

Comforting

I was a little worried when the story began, and one of the main characters described himself as a “stalker”. I was glad when the story developed and I learned this poor child had a poor self image. I really like how the teens helped each other to grow. It was comforting to see the older kids take the younger kid into their group. Too many times, teens are ruthless and cruel; it was encouraging to see this group take the story in a different direction.

I received this book through a GoodReads giveaway. This is my own review.

This book was disappointing. It was quite vulgar and predictable. The build-up of the mystery was extremely long. The mystery didn’t actually happen until halfway through the book, and the ending seemed too tidy and rushed. However, the characterizations were pretty good.

I thought this was a great book start to finish. Characters, settings, supporting characters, plot, development, believe-ability. And it all ties together nicely at the end. The swearing seemed unnecessary because there isn't a lot of it and so the little bit that is there seems a little forced, but that is such a small criticism. Will definitely read more.
