About the author

Harry Emerson Fosdick was an American clergyman. He was born in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Colgate University in 1900, and Union Theological Seminary in 1904. While attending Colgate University he joined the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He was ordained a Baptist minister in 1903. Fosdick was the most prominent liberal Baptist minister of the early 20th Century. Although a Baptist, he was Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church on West Twelfth Street and then at the historic, interdenominational Riverside Church (the congregation moved from the then-named Park Avenue Baptist Church, now the Central Presbyterian Church) in New York City.

حدود دو دهه پیش کتاب دیگری در باره ی لوتر خوانده بودم و اصلا انتظار نداشتم که این کتاب تا این حد برایم جالب باشد.ارزش هر کتاب امریست نسبی و بسته به سن و سال و حال و احوالی که هنگام خواندنش دارید.شماری از کتابها را باید در آغاز راه زندگی خواند،شماری را در میانه و یا حتی پایان ،تا بتوان بیشترین بهره ممکن را از آنها برد.

نویسنده در این کتاب تنها به صورت اجمالی به بیان سرگذشت مارتین لوتر پرداخته است،اما از رنج ها و فداکاری های لوتر و همینطور احساسات و افکار او سخن زیادی به میان نیاورده است.دیتریش بونهافر در کتاب بهای شاگردی،لوتر را یک شاگرد واقعی معرفی می کند.در مورد وی می گوید :لوتر در دو مقطع از زندگی اش فداکاری و انکار نفس کرد.نخستین بار هنگامی که وارد زندگی رهبانی شد و همه چیز جز خویشتن پاک و زاهدش را ترک گغت و دومین بار هنگامی که می خواست دیر را ترک کند و باید همه چیزش حتی همین خویشتن خود را نیز ترک می گفت.
با وجود کوتاهی متن،خواندن این کتاب به کسانی که با لوتر و اندیشه هایش آشنایی ندارند کمک شایانی خواهد نمود

Nice, short introduction to Martin Luther for middle or high school. The author is known for not believing orthodox Christian teachings, but I didn’t notice anything “off” in the text.

لوتر پسر یک خانواده فقیر آلمانی بود که در شهر آیسلبن آلمان زاده شد. او هوش سرشاری داشت و در آن زمان توانست لیسانس هنر و فوق لیسانس حقوق بگیرد. پدرش دوست داشت قاضی شود ولی دست سرنوشت روزی لوتر به حادثه‌ایی دچار می‌شود و بعد از نجات یافتن از آن تصمیم می‌گیرد زندگی‌ عادی را رها کند و راهب شود. او در دیر درس خود را ادامه می‌دهد و دکتری الهیات را دریافت می‌کند و به تدریس در دانشگاه مشغول می‌شود.
اما زندگی او از زمانی دستخوش تغییر می‌شود که روزی به مخالفت با آمرزش فروشی می‌پردازد (آن زمان آلمان جزئی از رم بود و پاپ برای گناهان مردم پولی از آن‌ها به عنوان جریمه دریافت می‌کرد که آمرزش‌فروشان آن را جمع می کردند). او مخالفتش را با نوشتن اعلامیه‌ی ۹۵ بندی بر در کلیسا‌ها اعلام می‌کند و برای اینکه مردم عادی متوجه نشوند به زبان لاتین (زبان دانشمندان آن موقع) می‌نویسد ولی در کمال تعجب شخص ناشناسی آن را به زبان آلمانی برمی‌گرداند و سبب بحرانی در آن نقطه تاریخ می‌شود.
این کتاب به زبان ساده و روان به زندگی لوتر می‌پردازد و حاوی چند تصویر نیز است. در قطع رقعی و جلد شومیز به چاپ رسید و برای گروه سنی ۱۲+ مناسب است

کتاب به زندگی مارتین لوتر، راهب و کشیشی که با اصلاح دینی خود، تاثیر شگرفی روی دنیای مذهبی اروپا و بعد ها کل دنیای مسیحیت گذاشت، میپردازد . وقایع مهم آلمان در زمان زندگی خود لوتر را از 1483 تا 1546 بازگو میکند. زبان کتاب و ترجمه آن هم شیوا و روان میباشد البته برخی اشکالات نگارشی و علامت گذاری قابل صرف نظر است

My personal prejudices tarnish my reading of this hard to find Landmark title. This book was difficult to stomach. Luther upheld the authority of Scripture and Fosdick does not. I cannot get past the irony.

Published in 1956, the book provides an overview of the life of Martin Luther. The courage, the humility, and the determination of this humble man, his refusal to bow down to the Papacy when they demanded he recant, his unshakable belief in the Bible and its truths, led to the split in Catholicism that still resonates today.

I read the 1957 edition. Great read-aloud for our homeschool. Though written with pre-adolescent readers in mind, the entire family enjoyed this book.

This was from the World Landmark books series, companion to the Landmark books, which focused on U.S. history. Both were perfect for young history nerds such as I in the late fifties. As with the Landmark books, I won't enter all that I read. This serves as an example because it was the first "real" book that I read cover to cover in one sitting -- or rather, lying. It was in our basement on a Saturday afternoon when I was in the fourth grade, my head was propped on a burlap bag filled with pecans. I was gripped by the story. Seems fitting in light of my eventual career both.
