Interesting story boring telling it

I'm getting used to this author's writing style which is full of tricks, misdirection, and perpetual cliff hangers. He also likes to explain himself ad nauseam. I thought the last ten percent of the book was going to end predictably. It didn't, but I wished the author would would get it over with his retelling of what had gone before so that the book would be finished. Well, there's a new and exciting cliff hanger instead. There's some real imagination with the story itself, but the constant introspection and retelling of what has already happened and why people are thinking the way they are or not thinking or whatever is boring. We are getting close to the big reveal, I think, but it apparently is not about the architects as we thought. Boy I wish they'd get busy excavating the Turkish site. There must be all sorts of amazing info to be found there. Are humans bad guys or good guys? Are the architects nefarious or not? What really happened at Kerguellen? What's the real source of the parapsychic abilities? Everything looks like it's going smoothly toward inter system regains when Geoffrey disappears as he's about to give his inaugural address before a packed house of delegates and international tv. Suddenly the whole house of cards begins to crumble with out of control security services, people having secrets but no one to tell them to, the Messengers rioting, etc.etc. then we discover that nothing is as it seems. Oh by the way, I found one (like one) proper use of the word "who".

Too repetitive

I got so bored reading this book due to many repeats of events in this books and previous books. It was excessive even for bringing someone up to speed who hadn't the previous books. It detracted from what would have been a great book.

NOT ALONE: LEAP OF DESTINY (NALOD) is the second novel in the second trilogy that started off with 2015's NOT ALONE, a very interesting mix of sci-fi, government conspiracies, first contact and more. NOT ALONE was followed by 2 more novels completing the first trilogy, and then NOT ALONE: FRACTURED UNION followed by NALOD with the third and presumably last part to come out in May 2020.

By this point in the series we have learned that humanoid aliens called Messengers have indeed visited Earth and in fact have saved our planet from certain destruction with a comet headed directly for us. All of this stuff happened in the first Trilogy. The main characters were believable and interesting, and acted for the most part in a reasonable way.

Somehow, by the start of the second trilogy, several of them seem to have had a personality transplant. Emma, the bright PR expert who teamed up with Dan McCarthy, the several years younger young man who becomes the unwilling but bright and plucky centerpiece of the whole shebang in the first novel now becomes basically a worried mother, ceding right hand man role to her younger sister, Tara, who starts out being beautiful but flighty and ends up now being one of the main human ambassadors to the Messengers. Dan's older brother, Clark, starts out as a brawn over brains big brother and has now morphed into a wise second ambassador/spokesman for humanity.

The Messenger's story becomes roiled in several twists and turns that by NALOD has turned them from marvelous interstellar travelers to basically helpless idiots with remarkable abilities who are unable to fix their own roof. I don't want to give away too many spoilers but other aliens appear and things just get downright silly, as everyone is freaking out over some abilities that Emma and Dan's baby seems to have inherited from her father, who was given temporary Messenger-like abilities earlier. The desperate search to rid the baby of these abilities driven much of NALOD.

Mr. Falconer desperately needs some grammar lessons. I recommend a copy of Strunk and White, or whatever the current author list is. He does not know that "I" is a subject and "me" is an object and he does not know that when using both a personal pronoun and a proper Noun together, the proper noun always come first followed by the pronoun. Hence the text is filled with "me and Dan" instead of "Dan and I" or "Dan and me" and various combinations of this error. In one place the Narrator says"... was the far *realer* threat..." instead of "...was the more real threat...". There are other strange made up words like "unease" and questionable grammatical constructions.

In addition to the mechanical grammar and writing issues, NALOD suffers from terrible redundancies of events both in this installments and previous entries. This becomes tedious after a while. The pacing is also off, with most chapters being too short and ending with cliff-hangers designed to generate tension and anticipation for what happens next, just before a change of scene. This is a cheap trick.

I do not recall any of these writing blunders in the first trilogy. Perhaps they were there, but because the plot was so interesting I did not dwell on them. But somehow I don't think so. I think the second trilogy, and especially NALOD was rushed, and not properly edited or proofread. In any case, Mr. Falconer desperately needs an editor and should probably go back through all the novels and fix the errors. Because the story is still interesting and I have Kindle Unlimited (which is how I found and read all the novels), I look forward to the final installment next month.

Weakly recommended but only for readers of the first 4 novels in the series.

SPOILER WARNING for this rant, just FYI.

Man, I used to love these books but I'm so over it now. Let's re-explain everyone and everything they've been involved in ever chapter they come up. Like, did CAF have a word quota he had to make? Four paragraphs to explain something that could be summed up in 1 sentence. Seriously!

Plus, even worse, I'm so tired of the "OMG Piper is the most important thing in the universe". WHAT? Screw all the 7 billion people in the world, Piper is more important. OMG, how awful she might have god like powers, MUST fix them NOW. Seriously? "I don't' care if the fate of the world is at stake, I only care about Piper" Did CAF have a kid recently or something and he thinks the meaning of life is to have a kid? Went from we must release this info because Humanity NEEDS TO KNOW........to well, they only need to know if it won't harm Piper.....HUH???? Over it, books went from great to crap. Read the first 3 and be done. And this is has about 2 pages of anything of substance in them, trust me I'm not lying when I say this is the worst filler book I've ever read just to get you to buy the next one. I won't be paying for it. I had to have Audible read this one at 1.5x just to be able to tolerate the word soup that explains explains explains stuff you already knew from the last 4 books when it was explained.

Disappointing

Too much look-back at the previous books. It was so frustrating that I quit reading at the 1/4 point. I just couldn't handle the drudgery anymore.

This is a very long series, close to 100 hours of listening in the unabridged audiobook format of six novels. Given the length, you need a voice pleasant to hear and James Patrick Cronin does a terrific job throughout. Pacing, tempo, male and female voices, etc., overall production very well done. Not Alone is a SciFi series and Book One was released in August of 2016, book 6 in June of 2020, all by Audible Studios. Not Alone is character-driven, albeit few main characters – which is nice listening and you get to know everyone. No need for struggling to keep track of who-is-who, and thanks to the excellent narration, no problems with who-is-speaking-to-who.

Plot. Dan McCarthy, while riding his bike on a delivery, collides with a robber who drops an envelope containing definitive proof of a government cover-up. Human knowledge of aliens, i.e., we are Not Alone, has been a fact since 1938. Early on, you're skeptical and before the books are finished - well, no spoilers. But, SciFi lovers will be beyond pleased as Dan's amazing adventures unfold. Start with book one, and read in sequence or you'll miss a great deal.

Liked. Character development, humanoid, and otherwise. You like most, hate a few. The ultimate goodness of mankind, and any potential visitors, is something we all wish to be true.

Not so hot? Repetitive. Most noticeable in the series, Falconer re-caps a great deal, almost as if he needs to remind himself where the plot is and how we got here, reading from his own notes. Painful to listen to for anyone who is binge-listening to all six books in the series. Kept mumbling, 'Yeah, yeah, I know, I know - move on." Actually did have to fast-forward a bit.

No clicking knees, not a blood-and-guts type horror SciFi. This is a first contact story out of a vivid imagination telling us what it might really be like. World politics, wonder, fear, greed, hope - it's all here. No sex, nothing offensive. Recommended!

Not Alone: Leap of Destiny is book 5 in Falconer's excellent Not Alone series. I've read (and even reread!) every book in the series. Not Alone, book one, caught my eye because of the cover. I had never read any books by Falconer, so I took my own leap -- of faith --and took a chance on his writing. I also hadn't really read anything in the sci fi genre. I was so entranced by this book, reading the books to follow was a no brainer for me. Dan McCarthy, our protagonist in the series, from his youth had wanted to believe that Earth wasn't the only planet to inhabit life. Then a manuscript dropped, literally, in his lap. It seemed to contain all the evidence to Dan that there was intelligent life out there, and that we were NOT alone. Skipping ahead to Leap of Destiny, Dan, his wife Emma, and their daughter Piper were suddenly afraid of the outside world. Aliens, and Earth humans, could and probably would take advantage and exploit the abilities Piper had been born with. Dan and his sister-in-law Tara were trying to help their alien friends rebuild part of their world only to find an unsettling discovery. Not to mention the growing distrust of Dan by the aliens they were trying to help. This 5th in the series is engagingly written. You've known and become attached to the characters from book one. Follow them, in order, and when you read Leap of Destiny, you'll be waiting for book 6!

This is either the fifth or sixth book in this series that I have read and although I like the concepts and general characterisations this book ended rather abruptly and almost "forces" the reader into buying the next one to see what happened. I found this very irritating and the book to be rather overlong and ponderous and just when the action speeds up and reach a climax it switches scenes rather more often than I would like and losing impetus as a result. By the time the issues resolve I find that I have forgotten what they were about. Other than that it is a good story but I see there are a further two or three books to come. I hope they are more rounded and do not leave the reader in limbo.

Loved it. Not Alone 5: Leap of Destiny continues the fantastic "Not Alone" first contact six book series.

This series is an in-depth look at cooperation between two worlds after first contact and the politics involved. Great stuff. The media plays a big part as do all forms of politicians good and bad.

The character development is stellar. I feel I know all the players quite well, including the different personalities of the aliens.

Each of the books in the series are full novels, so you sure get your money's worth.

Looking forward to the final instalment in this long arc of six books.

A Great Leap of Fun!

This book needs the next one to clear things up.
What fun, to read about aliens who are close relatives to humans in many ways, and how the two come closer to each other by adopting their separate mannerisms. That the humans, who are technologically less capable than the aliens have become the aliens' go to people to help them, is a remarkable twist on the commonly held belief that we can only benefit from, but not help, an alien race, is a great turnabout.
Alas, I fear hat I may be giving away too much, so the best thing to be said is, read the books which come before, then read this oone, and you'll have a great, long period of intense enjoyment.

The Architects as an advanced alien race is quite the enigma for Dan and company and even the aliens living on New Kerguelen. Yet, they are also detested from both Earthlings and the aliens from Kerguelen.
However, a new discovery in New Kerguelen is about to set fire (figuratively) to everything.
Author Craig A Falconer certainly knows how to get readers intrigued and immersed in a world where being alone as a race, no longer applies and relations between "aliens" is an actuality that threatens to boggle the mind again and again and again.
Ending this book in a cliffhanger only spurs one on to get the next book in the series immediately...no problem.
Enjoy.

Thoroughly engaging

5 books in a row and the intense pull to read more just never lets up. Now I only have to wait until tomorrow for the last book to be published. The only problem that comes up with binging on a series that takes so long to write is that a big portion of the beginning of each book is spent trying to remind you what happened in the previous book which is no longer necessary. The author does a good job of it though.

Great story!

Without giving any spoilers, this book has a cliffhanger ending to top all cliffhangers! Wow! There are all sorts of shenanigans happening on Earth. John Cole continues to be a pestilence, the McCarthy family and friends continue to be the saviors of not one but two races, and political intrigue is just part of the nonsense they have to deal with. I'm starting the next book in the series as soon as I submit this review so I'm keeping it brief!

A "Need To Read" type of book!

I had not left reviews on the earlier parts of this series but felt the need to now. This series so far, has been a roller coaster ride. I almost want to fly through each page to see what happens next but find I need to show down enough to catch the words. LOL!! So...on to the next book as the adventure continues!!

please someone edit this book again

While I truly love first contact and alien contact stories, and this series in particular, this entry to the series was too full of needless exposition and descriptions. I had to skip pages to prevent boredom. The cliffhanger at the end was good enough to get me to buy the next book though!

Awful

Decent story but poorly written and almost impossible to follow. The author covers the same ground over and over. Even at half the pages it would be too long. I only paid $0.99 and I paid too much. Gave up halfway through.

An excellent pickup

Really enjoying the way this series has moved along and how things are progressing into the unknown.
Quite a few turns and it's still quite family focused on our main group of characters while not being too overly political.
