In Neil's mind it started with the man in the park. Or, more specifically, with the vicious bite the man had given Neil. He was wrong about that. The December Plague had started weeks earlier, though no one knew it.
The early symptoms were so mild that almost no one noticed them. A scratchy throat. A feeling of lethargy that you just can't shake. But then the slurring started. And an intense irritability. Finally, an irresistible urge to bite and consume accompanying an uncontrollable rage.
The Infected cannot be reasoned with and there is no known cure. They cannot recognize even their closest friends. Anything that attracts their notice risks being torn apart, including one another. Quarantined in a desperate attempt to contain the December Plague, the patients and staff of Wing Memorial hospital are left to fend for themselves. When the small security force sent to aid them are wiped out, the Infected run loose in the halls and Neil is trapped inside with them. Even worse is the knowledge that containment has failed and the outside world has no idea what’s coming.
Simply stupendous take on the start of the "December Plague". (Although it didn't have a name in this novel) A gut-wrenching look at the first of the infected and those who were locked inside of the first hospital put in quarantine, how they battled the infected and how Neil and Shay tried to stay compassionate and sane. One of the most well written zombie tales I've read, and believe me, I've read a few! I can't wait to read more of Neil's tale in book 2.
A book that focussed on the living, not the dead in a near zombie apocalypse. The December Plague doesn’t kill people just turns them into furious, raging, hungry cannibals.
It was good, but many parts dragged on and on and on. 1/2 the length would have been better. By the end I was glad it was over.
I was absolutely captivated through this entire story. It was paced very well, perfectly described. I liked the different viewpoints of characters and also how likable the main ones were. I'm sad that the story is over. I'd love to read what happened next!
Let's see... we have an exceptionally slow start that quite literally bored me to tears, some poor wording choices that made me scratch my head too many times, characters that were wishy-washy making them inconsistent and therefore unlikeable, and a decent plot idea that never really got a good chance to shine.
Brute force and the fact I really dislike dnf'ing books is the only reason I managed to get this read at work.
Very good book, very fast paced. At first I was a little annoyed by the characters as they wanted to save everyone, even the infected. It took me minute to wrap my head around the fact that these are not really zombies and the plot makes you contemplate if you faced this situation would it be every man for himself or she we help each other even the infected.
from most other end of humanity type novels I've read. Very entertaining. Part of my thought process was, just kill them and move on, stop being bleeding hearts; but then I realized that's exactly what makes this series different. It's not a kill, survive and run story, it's a let's work together and survive story. Not us versus them, but us AND them.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Everytime I read a zombie book by Deirdre Gould there is always a new concept to adapt in - I won't say and cause spoilers ; But she looks at it in a totally different way to the conventional zombie apocalypse book! Would have given 5 stars but got a bit lost in the beginning but could have just been me.
This book was amazing. Could not put it down. It is 5am and I just finished it. This is a suspenseful, heart stopping, action packed, gruesome amazing book. Trust me you will not want to put it down.
I have read many apocalyptic novels, but guaranteed, this was one of the best. It held my attention from page one and I didn't want to stop. I hope this author has more, because I will definitely buy more from her.
Uhmmm not really a zombie story, but not really as if it isnt. I did like the way the author tells the story, and i Will probably try to read the Next One.
I Guess i want to know more of what happens Next 😁
Thank you Amazon for the free first in series book
Neil was randomly bitten by a stranger when waiting to see his daughter in a Christmas parade. The parade itself ended in a chaotic brawl. Neil is sent to the hospital but things there become dicey. Locked in a now quarantined hospital, he tries to survive while the December plague rages outside.
I really liked this book! The dialogue was a little repetitive at points, but I loved how the plague started and how the infected people started acting as they were getting sick. My heart dropped when Neil started slurring... but the fact that he was saved two years later has me really interested in the next book!
